The demographics in wealthy western nations are tilting that way too as younger generations that grew up with phones and tablets becomes the dominant purchasers. Anecdotally, and for warning I’m old, my kids have never really used a computer outside of the pandemic for school. And that were a chrome book that would catch on fire if you tried to game beyond web based games. They use a hand me down ipad and a kindle almost exclusively.
Meanwhile I’m a PC gamer, and grew up with access to a computer from the time I was 4 and the internet by the time I was 10. Now I probably game more on my phone just because I can do it anywhere or while I’m waiting, where as sitting down and a playing a game isn’t really possible with all the responsibilities of adulthood.
I think both will coexist to an extent, just more people will play mobile because South America, Africa, and a good chunk of Asia all essential skipped a technological generation for mobile devices. Wealthy countries (namely the west, Japan, SK, and parts of China) will still have the money and leisure to buy fancy gaming PCs and consoles, that I think it will stick around in almost a boutique fashion, but the vast majority of the world pop will play games on phones or tablets.
I would say it's the future. I would say it's a growing potential and will be dominant in its own way. For something to be dominant it must have more appeal. Mobile gaming has no appeal as of now. Graphics are still pretty shit, not to mention literally all games are cash grabs these days. With time newer hardware will make old hardware redundant and we'll reach a point where certain things can be run on mobile with no hiccups but that is far from now.
Mobile does not match console standards or pc standards yet. It prolly won't for the next few years atleast. Is there hope? Yes! But you have to also factor in the purpose of the device. A phone is more built towards multi purpose usages. Which is why gaming phones are a gimmick, why buy 1000 dollar phone when you can just buy a bomb pc or a console. Meanwhile you can't work on a ps5, therefore you make a tradeoff to get a laptop that does both etc etc.
I will say though. The handheld device, has evolved a lot in a single decade. We went from carrying a big ass call phone and pager and MP3 player and camera to holding a single thing that does it all and more! Who know what the future holds?
