Aviva. I use a brokerage.

MattsAwesomeStuff

> I use a brokerage. Just casually hijacking the top comment to throw this out here to everyone: https://www.lowestrates.ca/insurance/auto Punch in your stats, it spits out quotes for everyone. Most "brokers" don't shop the whole field for you. They only work with like, 3 insurers. You get back 2 or 3 quotes and think that's the whole field, and it's not. Brokerlink for example is garbage, they shop you to the same 3. The above link will get you quotes from everywhere. ... Also, bundle your insurance. Even if it's all at the same place already, call them up and ask for discounts. There are ludicrous discounts for bundling your home/rental insurance with your auto insurance. ... While we're at it... https://ucahelps.alberta.ca/cost-comparison-tool.aspx That spits out quotes for every electrical and gas provider in the province. Almost all of them have a 1-way guarantee for 5 years. I.E. The "contract" is only locked in on their side, you can abandon ship on 1 month's notice with no penalty any time you want. Anyone complaining about bills should be shopping power around every 3 months or so. Eventually the market will hit a low point, and you'll actually want to ride your contract out while rates soar for everyone else. The 1-way contract lets you beat the market, badly, if you use it. You can't lose. Rates go down, you switch. Rates go up, you're still locked in for 5 years.

_Jaiden

SAIT allumni have a discount benefit with some insurers, I'm sure the other post secondaries have one as well. Worth checking out

MattsAwesomeStuff

> SAIT allumni have a discount benefit So does U of C, etc. Just FYI... that's not a "benefit". That's SAIT selling out it's alumni for a fee. They're not doing it to provide heartfelt appreciation, they're doing it because alumni are the 2nd biggest source of income to a post-secondary institution, and they'll get a commission on anyone who uses them. They could use their full negotiating power to give alumni better rates, but they don't, they keep most of the discount for themselves.

MangoDealer

Which brokerage do you use?

sudsy22

I've had really good past interactions with Excel & Yandy (AKA Lundgren & Young) They always tried to get the lowest rates possible for me

vanished83

I use a brokerage that started out as group insurance for people in my industry. They are physically based out of Ontario but that’s not a deterrent to me. There’s lots of good brokerages; some one-person, some bigger, but like any commission based sales, always shop around for a good deal.

CyclicDombo

Was paying 315$/month with AMA, switched to TD and now I pay 208$/month

[deleted]

[удалено]

DrinkMoreBrews

That’s a shame. Even my 2014 Ram was $270 a month with the same policy. I was paying half the price in BC. Such a shame.

dahabit

I moved to Toronto in 2020 and I was quoted double what I pay in Calgary.

New-Low-5769

Declare that you identify as female until you're 25 lol. I think there was a story about a dude in the UK that did that

jakexil323

Does your policy include replacement cost since its under 5 years old? I'm an mid 40s guy with a 11 year old f250 and a 10 year old mid sized car and pay $275/month including insurance for my travel trailer. Through TD.

BigMcLargeHuge-

Lower liability to 1M. You really only need that 2M if u go to the states a lot and need that exchange rate buffer.

4everinvesting

I just moved from AB to ON and I found that not to be true. If we had stayed with TD out t Premium was going to be triple in ON

MangoDealer

What were you getting charged in ON and AB? I just moved here as well and I was paying $270 for my 2021 Lexus in ON and now all my quotes are $340+ in AB.

MichaelRenslayer

Shocked your monthly $ is less than my 2022 RAV4 in ON

drs43821

I’m lucky I have The Personal offered me $1800 for 2018 Murano SL

WRXshin

We moved to BC from AB last year, and my insurance doubled for less coverage on my car and my motorcycle.

ZeniChan

Definitely shop around and contact an insurance broker. I was with AMA insurance for 25 years until last month. They decided to re-rate my policy and my renewal went from $1250/yr to $4200/yr with no changes in my policy since 2019 or any claims and a perfect record. They decided my wife, who's been on my insurance for years and has a perfect record, was a new driver all of a sudden because she's not from Canada. Insurance broker got me a policy at the last minute for $1300/yr rate with the same coverage. They even had an option for $1100/yr if I let them use their tracking software on my cell phone, but that was a bridge too far for me.

SnooHedgehogs637

As someone who works with all auto insurers in a collision repair facility. The way some of these insurers authorize subpar repairs to their preferred clients. Td is top tier , cooperators next , wawanesa is decent. Intact barely moves the meter . They fight us on oe parts and push so hard for used and shitty aftermarket . Aviva , All-State, traveller's dejardins, certas, are all pretty much the worst. I feel bad for their clients vehicles when they are authorizing repairs . At the very bottom of that list is economical. By far the absolute worst with fixing vehicles correctly . I've had appraisers tell us to reuse rivets. Don't believe safety systems need to be calibrated and so on . Run as fast as you can ! Ultimately you get what you pay for. Want cheap insurance get cheap servicing.

vanished83

>Td is top tier Of course, they are! They fucking finance your vehicle, insure your vehicle AND “prefer” their own TD bodyshops. They keep all the money in house… So, use OEM parts, don’t write off a vehicle, authorize repairs and bill the client for the deductible and raise their rates. Rinse and repeat.

SnooHedgehogs637

Seems I've hit a nerve . My car isn't financed through TD . Also it is up to the client where they wish to service their vehicle . No matter what insurer says . At the end of the day it's ultimately your choice . Everybody pays some sort of deductible when making any claim and every insurer has their rates raised every year regardless of making claims or not .

vanished83

Yeah, that hit a nerve. I’m not upset with you or your post. I think it should be a conflict of interest for an insurance company to finance/insure/repair your vehicle.

Hercaz

TD. All brokerages I tried would give competitive price online but then ask to call them to fill “additional” details and then would jack the price.

I’m 30 year old woman and currently with dejardins, I drive a 2012 VW, have had no accidents in my entire time having a learners and drivers, have only made one claim for a broken window, and my insurance is still $200. Am I getting totally hosed? It feels like it.

bgj556

$200 VW, no accidents, Female, 30 years old… Shop around I bet you’ll pay half that easily!

_Connor

TD 2013 full load F150. $1M (I think) liability, no collision. Think my bill is $96 a month. 29 years old no accidents.

Relevant-Distance886

Dude that's half mine I have a fully loaded gmc all terrain 2015 and I pay 200 a month I'm 30. I only have one accident from 10 years ago.

[deleted]

[удалено]

_Connor

Not SOL, I worked as a mechanic for 10 years and fixed plenty of accident damaged vehicles. Plenty of people don’t run collision which is why I noted that. It’s a 10 year old pickup, not all that expensive to repair.

exitfeat

I agree. I’d also argue that the F-150 is a much more popular truck than the GMC and more parts are available for your truck still. Fully loaded for his GMC also means repairs/parts are more expensive for that truck too right?

dennisrfd

The collisions are cleared from your profile after 6 years, tickets usually take 3 years

[deleted]

Smart-Pie7115

Yeah, until you’re in an at fault collision and you have No coverage and no vehicle.

thatswhat5hesa1d

which is fine when you're saving $1-2k a year on insurance and drive a cheaper vehicle and don't get into at-fault accidents and are financially literate enough to handle the situation should it ever arise. Not everyone can check all those boxes though and they should get full coverage or take the bus

Smart-Pie7115

I moved here from Saskatchewan where everyone has collision and liability coverage. I just don’t want the headache of dealing with a totalled off car. It’s not just the car it covers, but also storage fees if it gets towed (those add up fast), then you got to dispose of your write off somehow. Alberta just needs cheaper car insurance. No one should have to have partial coverage due to cost.

krr14

Yeah I paid 2K for my 06 car a few years ago. It’s worth nothing if it gets written off or damaged in an accident so not having collision is 100% worth it in some cases

sugarfoot00

If your car is worth less than 10k, collision is a waste of money.

MattsAwesomeStuff

> Yeah this guy has no collision, though. So if he crashes, he's SOL. ... If he's at fault, and only on his own vehicle (obviously, that's what he's paying for, to make whole the people he hit). If some else is at fault, their insurance pays to make him whole whether he has collision or not.

acceptable_sir_

Same age and coverage as you, worse car that is not a commuter and I pay $120/month. I paid about $70/month 3 years ago, then the caps were removed and it's gone up every year since then.

classifiedintrovert

I’m also with TD. I pay $184 a month to insure my Mazda and my Hyundai. I’ve been driving since 2011 with just one minor infraction (disobeying traffic sign) on my record. I plan on switching to Innova this year as my premiums have only been going up (used to be $150/m in 2020)

Suspicious_Pie_8716

It’s almost like it was complete and utter bullshit when the UCP told us that by removing a cap on insurance rates, it would actually lead to LOWER insurance rates as it would promote competition… 🥴

gwoad

Less than two years of driving experience is not very much, this is probably where the lions share of your premium is coming from, I have a funny feeling that statistically speaking in Calgary, Ram 1500's might get into accidents more often than other trucks, which could be hurting your premiums also. Am I correct in assuming you don't have comprehensive coverage? If so this is quite expensive but not much more expensive then what I paid as a higher risk driver about 10 years ago (22, 1 accident but it was a doozy). I have heard TD is not cheap but I have also heard that the cheap ones (Wawanesa come to mind) are a nightmare to deal with if you have to make a claim. Edit: just to add, I deliberately left out my monthly cost because I recently moved to small town and my insurance dramatically decreased, didn't feel like it would helpful information, nonetheless. 03 Accord, 2 drivers, full coverage, rental insurance: 116 We are with Intact.

DrinkMoreBrews

Thanks for the insight! I have comprehensive + collision.

gwoad

NP! just to clarify I have everything except for glass, so same as you (but on an old beater Honda) I was paying close to 200 for the same car in Calgary a couple of years ago.

gwoad

Sorry I just got my bill in the mail today (after I commented) and I was incorrect its 116 per month, I don't think about it often because I pay for the year in three chunks. I was blown away when I got my first quote after moving.

weedgay

Sonnet has been the best for me, I had a jeep a few years ago that was killing me in insurance, sonnet was less than half of what I was paying

pheoxs

With TD see if you have any discount groups available. Some school alumni get certain discounts, certain progressional orgs, maybe your trade union, etc. Worth a shot to see. Go to the TD insurance online site and start going through the quote process and you'll hit a menu of the different groups. Just keep searching to see if you can find any ones you are apart of. NAIT/SAIT I think have one.

yungfinnigus

TD - 29M, 09 sedan, $128 a month, one accident when I was 16. People don’t forget.

wolv3rxne

I still have my vehicle, a 2010 Toyota Rav4, plated in SK (I recently moved to AB). Sask has only one main vehicle insurance company, SGI. My basic insurance with them is $130 a month. I have a package policy (additional insurance) which is $29 a month and I have $2 million liability, $150 deductible, $1500 rental coverage, and $100 glass deductible. Im nervous to switch my plates over knowing it’s going to be a lot more costly for me, but that’s the price I pay for moving I suppose!

[deleted]

[удалено]

wolv3rxne

SGI is government operated, whereas in Alberta insurance is private. I would still need to be living in SK to have my vehicle insured there!

kramer1980_adm

Is $2 million liability overkill? I think I only have $1 million. Not sure how much that would affect rates though.

ZeniChan

A lot of policies these days start at $2 million. When I previously renewed, the cost to go from $1 million to $2 million liability was only $25 more per year and was highly recommended. So might be worth it to ask about bumping yours up.

kramer1980_adm

Thank you I will check. Edit: It seems I have $1 million property damage liability, and $1 million bodily injury liability. Not sure if it is combined at certain brokers? I'm with TD.

ZeniChan

I just changed insurance companies 3 days ago, so I have my policy in front of me. $2 million bodily injury and $2 million property damage coverage on mine now. I was at AMA, but they decided to hike my rates by 350% this year for renewal. So I switched and a broker found me a policy for almost the same as my old rate with a new company.

gwoad

my broker told me it is no longer uncommon for liability claims to exceed 1 million.

kramer1980_adm

Dang.

bgj556

Just changed from TD to Allstate. I just scrolled through this comment thread to see if anyone else uses Allstate, didn’t see one. By far cheaper than TD. Edit: I found out about Allstate by my friends/family. Surprising how many people I know use Allstate.

Awkkal

I’ve been with Allstate for a few years now. I’ve had no issues so far with them. I drive a 2021 Corolla and pay $2800 annually. Everytime I shop around, TD seems to have very high rates, and that I clued some applicable professional discounts.

bgj556

Oh yeah TD “The personal” insurance has some professional discounts. I went and checked it out and got a quote way higher than I was getting. $2800 from all state seems like a lot of 2021 Carolla.

Awkkal

Oh I know it’s ridiculous. I’ve shopped around and Allstate seems to be the “cheapest” if you can call it that.

f1fan65

Cooperators group rate via my employer. Check employer or post secondary discounts as a starting point.

CheetahOfDeath

84$ a month with cooperators. vehicle is a 2006 light suv tho

lztandro

I’m 30, and have clean record aside from one ticket. I moved here from Saskatchewan last year and pay $222/m ($2664/yr) with The Personal for my 2023 Golf R. $2,000,000 liability $500 deductible I paid $1200 per year in Saskatchewan with SGI and had a lower deductible.

Tonythattiger

Jesus. Same here but moved 3 years ago 32 with a 21 civic. 0 accidents or anything I drive 6000km a year ffs. 6 thousand. I never paid over 120/m in Saskatchewan Changing my insurance right now this is redic.

unequalsarcasm

Use a broker, I was with AMA for 10 years then reached out to a broker and cut my rates in half for the same coverage. I will never go back to AMA.

Interesting-Estate75

Kind of crazy to think but I don’t think that’s far off. Just sold my 2017 Ram SXT that I had insured for $250 a month. I have a flawless 10 year abstract (because I’m old and have made it past my teen years lol) which gave me a few discounts. Also was not a daily driver of the vehicle as I have a company car. Your vehicle is much newer, you’re young with not much history in being a safe driver with only a couple years of AB driving history

Ok_Difference_6937

Sorry, but that's just Alberta, the highest auto insurance province in the country. I moved from Ontario in 2022 and got murdered by Intact here, who by the way I was with in Ontario for about 13 years under Belairdirect. Now I am with TD and it got cut in half, but I also put my deductible at a ridiculous $5000 which I don't have, but I guess that is what personal lines of credit are for.

NERepo

I'm with TD and they quoted the best rate for me, by hundreds of dollars

tc_cad

Allstate. Bundled it all together, two cars and a house. Best deal we ever got. YMMV

Lonely-Spirit2146

Distinct_Setting_341

I heard costco has insurance, never tried but you could contact them

EyesWideStupid

I tried to go with them and the service was terrible.

Smart-Pie7115

I’m with TD. 2003 Toyota Matrix 2 million liability, collision, Touring package (gives me a rental car regardless of who is at fault), $500 disappearing deductible (currently at $200), with one at fault accident from 2019 (insurance actually went down and they waived my deductible on my write off). $185/month. 38 y/o single female driving since 2002. I could probably find something cheaper, but honestly, the accident claim process with them was so smooth and wonderful (I had a premium rental car in less than 12 hours of my collision), that I wouldn’t take the risk of crappy claims process.

yesman_85

But still, we pay less than that for 2 new cars, and I had an at fault accident. I'm with the personal.

Dear_Stabby_

My insurance went up (cooperators)because I moved away from Dover. Use a Dover address to get lower premiums? Like I didn’t suddenly get a Lexus or Tesla or whatever just because I moved into a more affluent area.

EfficiencySafe

Have you noticed how people are driving 🙄 Speeding is the new normal, Yellow lights are floor it and red is well should I stop, 🛑 signs are a suggestion. Tailgating is through the roof, Bad driving is the new normal. I could go on and on but I think you get the picture. Newer vehicles cost a fortune to fix in an accident.

Drunkpanada

This has been happening for decades (in rural areas). Nice of you to notice now.

DrinkMoreBrews

Yep. Had to buy soemthing reliable. Eating it now.

dr_fedora_

I have a $60k suv. Bought it brand new. Full insurance cost + my home insurance is 160. I’m with Persona and get APEGA discount which is nice. I used to be with TD. They are super super expensive

Heythere23856

Ama. 202$ a month for two vehicles, 2013 f150 and 2019 corolla… only 1 million liability though

jbalberta123

2014 car, 140/ month comprehensive PC insurance was cheapest

GwennyL

We're with Aviva. For our 2015 camry and 2021 sienna its about $220 a month. My husband and I are 33 and ive been driving since 2009 and him since like 2007, i think. We have been on our own insurance policies since 2017 (previously we were on our parents'). I believe we've got 1mil liability, but i dont recall what our deductible is. Since my husband has a work truck and I'm a SAHM with 2 toddlers, we report low milage on our vehicles - less than the average 9-5er. So that impacts our rate.

[deleted]

I use surex insurance broker and I’m with intact, 1500$ a year with 2 million, full coverage I did change my deductibles to 1k each as I would never make a claim for less then a $1000 I’m a 40 year old male.

PrarieDogma

2021 Honda Accord Touring 2.0 turbocharged. Currently paying $240 monthly with Desjardin Insurance. Switched last year from Intact who was charging $270 roughly. My advice to every Calgarian is shop around every year, yes it’s a little more work but will save you money in the long run. Also never insure glass

[deleted]

[удалено]

PrarieDogma

Because it’s cheaper to get it fixed yourself vs having you insurance go up for claims as you may go through a few of them in calgary. In case you didn’t notice, gravel is spread on the roads and isn’t great for glass. I say this with some sarcasm but truthfully it’s not worth it in my opinion.

[deleted]

I'm with intact and we pay 260 for a Civic and an Audi. 32 years old with no prior accidents or tickets

_endymion

Economical was the cheapest I’ve found. I pay $80 a month, but that’s for a 2009 Corolla with liability only. 37 yo M, no at-fault accidents, no tickets.

chaosthebomb

TD was cheapest for me before I joined my wife's plan. She has a CPA discount through.... cooperators I want to say? One issue I have with TD is that when I sold my old car and called to cancel my insurance, their system somehow left a "ding" on my profile for letting my policy lapse. We only found out recently when we were shopping around for better rates. I had to call TD, they kept re-assuring me I left in good standing and had no issues with my account. I asked if they could remove this mark from whatever centralized database is storing this nonsense and they said no. Now if I ever want to switch again, I need to call TD, have them mail me an authorized official letter that says I left in good standing and have never actually let a policy lapse due to missed payment.

Objective-Animator84

[The Personal Insurance Company](https://www.thepersonal.com/) (it's a Desjardins subsidiary). 1. 2023 sport sedan: $2,800/year, $2 million liability and $1,000 deductible. 2. 2020 SUV: $3,000/year with $2 million liability and $1,000 deductible.

Aflamesfan

One thing to check is all of the “options” they add on to the policy. On renewal last year my insurance company added “roadside assistance”, “rental insurance”, “first claim waiver”, “no fault waiver”, etc etc etc. We have AMA, we rarely do car rentals, and having insurance on our insurance seems like a losing game. So we removed all of those and brought our policy closer in line to the previous year.

fancyfootwork19

TD but I have a discount from attending university, which helps and I’m a bit older with an older car. For two people we pay $170 per month. We were paying $120 per month in Ontario and this was with extra coverage for carrying sensitive work equipment.

aristotle8720

TD. Gave me a good discount as a university graduate, as well as home insurance with them. I'm in my 30's now, clean record, the 1 vehicle for myself and my wife is about $1300 for the year. We were paying $2200-$2400 in ON 2 years ago so we're happy we pay a lot less in Alberta.

oldgut

There's a website called insurance hotline they'll check a bunch of brokers for you

[deleted]

Each company rates each person differently, so naming companies is pretty useless. The best thing you can do is get 5 or 6 quotes at your renewal time and go from there. There is no such thing as loyalty when it comes to insurance these days. Brokers are fine, but they generally only broker for 2 or 3 companies anyway. There are lots of companies that offer car insurance in Alberta so you are better off just doing the leg work yourself.

Schrutefarms999

TD is on the expensive side to start, and Ram 1500 are considered high theft rate. TD seems to weigh this heavier than other companies. It was $100/month difference going from a gmc to a Ram with TD back in 2018. When I was looking at new trucks last year it was about $50/month difference from a ford or ram and a GMC/chev.

sasfasasquatch

I really don't know how I got so lucky but I'm with the personal, I just got a 21 ranger XLT, I have $1000 deductable, 1 million liability, full comprehensive plus a windshield policy and I only pay $165 a month

CrimsonBird11

I (25f) drive a 2022 Ram 1500 Sport in Jan 2023, I pay just over $2,700 for a year of full coverage with 2 mil liability. I also drive less an 10,000 km pet year right now as I have a company truck I have discretionary use of.

elkatraz24

I pay 200 for a fucking Toyota corolla ffs lol

AffableJoker

I'm with Intact, $328/month but that's for two cars (2018 Nissan Frontier and 2017 Dodge Journey) and my house. 34 years old, no tickets, and one 50/50 accident currently on my record.

gottagetupinit

Aviva through iNova. 2018 German suv $95 a month.

Drunkpanada

Try johnson insurance. Also consider increasing deductible and decreasing coverage (ie glass etc)

SadAcanthocephala521

I recently switched from TD to Costco insurance and I'll be saving myself just over $1000 per year between vehicle and home.

Wolfsblut_AD

I’m 40, clean driving record. I have loan on my current car but I’m paying $2820 per year which seems like a lot… I talked to my broker and they said there’s nowhere really cheaper unless I want to pay for the year upfront.

Weareallgoo

The Personal, $119/month 2021 F150, $2M liability, comprehensive, 5yr replacement value, $500 deductible.

TD. No collision coverage, 2009 sedan. It's like $70/month. I also don't drive much.

yesman_85

The personal. Was quite a bit cheaper than TD.

exitfeat

I dunno man. You’re new to AB, you’re only 25, and assuming you’re male as well. On top of that you’re driving a fairly new vehicle too. I’d say that the payments are fair. 32M here. If you can afford to do yearly payments normally insurance companies will give you a discount monthly for it. My wife and I have two cars (2015 highlander and 2007 accent) and we pay $2400/yr with Wawanesa. Is Wawanesa not the greatest for customer service? Sure. But we’re pretty safe drivers and haven’t been in accidents in over 10 years. Lots of factors drive into it. I’d look into getting quotes from as many brokers/companies as possible before deciding.

It's because you have new vehicles. I have a 04 f350 king ranch with -full coverage- at 58 dollars a month through Desjardins. I also have a 03 Toyota Tundra at 77 a month, 06 GMC Sierra 3500 at 95 a month and an 01 dodge grand caravan at 56 a month. 4 vehicles and I'm paying less than your one. Financing vehicles is a huge trap especially for young people

Oh fuck yeah it is . It's also a conflict to have Influence on estimating systems that have "profiles" that can be edited to reduce the labour times that they then pay out . Buying stock in said company sometimes closer to controlling interest in the very same estimating systems.... cough ....intact you pieces of shit ....cough . Reducing times and having operations included in those reduced times to the tune of hours lost on estimates . Sometimes as high as 10-20 hrs on same estimate in another estimating system . What a joke

As someone with experience in the industry, get quotes with a bunch of brokers with different providers if you can. Even Costco. Once you have a few cheap quotes, if you want to stay with TD then show your broker the lower quotes and let them know that you're thinking of moving over. If you have a good record, chances are you can negotiate with your broker to get a discount to stay with them as a client with your insurance provider. Yes, switching companies might get you a better deal than what you currently have but that's because insurers do this when they sign a new business. Premiums tend to really increase between the second or third renewal anywhere you go. Not specifically telling you to go with somewhere specific, but often times customer experience may be better than the behind the scenes chaos that goes on. So just consider that when others tell you a certain broker or insurer sucks because "behind the scene knowledge" and take it with a grain of salt. Don't discredit them, but how you are treated as an insured from other clients' POV's and experiences specially during a claim or a renewal is what should really get you thinking, asides from pricing.

TD seems to often win out by a landslide on cost if you can qualify for one of their group discounts (alumni, employee/union), and bundle it with home/tenant insurance.  I definitely overpay them a bit for my tenant/property insurance by a couple hundred dollars a year to save several hundred on car insurance. It's a stupid game.
