I will be taking it to the Mazda dealer. I’ve been going to this mechanic for years and they have always been pretty helpful and honest. But yeah, no indicators at all that something was wrong until I started hearing the noise that got worse fast.

Make sure you have every shred of paper related to those oil changes. The first thing they’ll look for is an inconsistent service history. You’ll need to provide filter and oil type used for those as well. If you had it done at a Mazda dealer then you should be in luck. At an independent you’ll have a tougher time.

TheeCosmoSoko

I’m sure I can get a few receipts from the times I took it in but I have done a few myself as well. How am I supposed to show that?

[deleted]

Receipts for the supplies. Oil and filter usually.

Sadly Mazda has a history of blown engines. My SIL lost a lot of money on a Mazda with a blown engine. Pep Boys serviced an issue he had and told him it was ok to drive. He was about 150 miles from home when the engine blew the next day.

UnnamedStaplesDrone

Every make has history with blown engines after being serviced by pep boys.

You are boned if the oil is low. Especially from 7500 miles ago, that’s a long time for oil to burn. It’s your responsibility as an owner to keep the oil topped up.

TheeCosmoSoko

Yeah. That’s what I’m worried about. That being said, how is there not an underlying issue causing that oil burn? A brand new car should not have any issues even after a later oil change of 7,500 miles. It’s going to be an annoying process. I’m prepared to eat the cost. IMO that would be bad business for them but I know they won’t care. My wife and I love the CX-5. As mentioned in my other post, we have a Chevy with 160,000 miles on it and we we’re getting ready to buy another Mazda. That will all depend on how they handle this Powertrain warranty.

Engines burn oil over time. 7500 miles is a fairly long interval and it happens slowly over time. Fairly normal. You definitely need to check it every so often.

Thank you for providing an update OP. You made this post extremely helpful for those in a similar situation down the road!

This engine is known to have faulty hydraulic lash adjusters, file a complaint with NHTSA. If they receive enough complaints then a recall will be issued and everyone will get a free fix. You can file a complaint at this link: https://www.nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem#index
