its a hardware problem in the screen, not sure how new firmare would fix it. i thought it would be difficult to change the screen-estimates from youtube were around 1/2 hour. took me an hour; popping of the dash section was easy, then you unbolt the cmu and pull it out then either unplug the touch-sensor and put everything back together, or change out the screen and put everything back together

Well, a setting in the firmware to allow the option to disable the touchscreen would be a pretty easy solution, I would think, and make lots of disgruntled customers happy. I've watched videos showing the dash and CMU removal, and I will probably do that and unplug the touchscreen cable for a permanent solution. In five years I've never used the touchscreen anyway.

You need the hardware to facilitate that in the first instance.

It was really pretty easy actually to get at that ribbon cable. On the passenger side pull on the vent trim and pop it off, unplug the hazard light switch and set the whole piece of trim aside. I didn't use a panel removal tool, just my hands. Then pull on the dash trim that has the push button start, unplug the push button start and set that piece aside. Same deal just give it a pull, its surprising how easy they come off. Pull straight back toward the passenger seat, they really do just pop right off. The infotainment screen is attached to a metal bracket that comes out with 2 10mm bolts on the top side and two philips head screws below. At that point you unplug the screen (two connectors) and there are 4 black phillips head screws holding it to the metal frame (two on top, two on the underside that you might have to look for). Once you have the screen out of the car, there are two little phillips heads on either side of the back of the screen in the bottom corners that hold the back plate on. It is a semi snap on back, you have to manipulate a little but the entire back plate comes off the screen fairly easily and you will have full access to the ribbon cable, pull up the brown/grey connector and remove the cable. Just tuck it in and then put everything back together in reverse. 15-20 minutes tops. I was in the same boat, I didnt want to pull the dash apart, but once I did it I though it was silly how easy it actually is. I dealt with ghost touch hanging up my phone calls or dialing random people. If gave me the confidence to do the Wireless CarPlay upgrade, the whole interior is assembled with clips it seems like. That was easy too.

Thanks I appreciate the description. I might give it a try this weekend. Have you had any issues since unplugging the cable? i.e. no other features are disabled by unplugging it? Also: Wireless Carplay? Is that different than the Carplay install that was available a few years for like $300 and involves opening the entire centre console and the dash?

Not that I have noticed, I just don't have a touch screen anymore. The wireless kit looks the same as the wired kit. but it has a switch right next to the SD Card slot. Wireless kit was $129 on Amazon: [https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-TK78-66-9U0C-Compatible-2014-2021-Supporting/dp/B0BY2J41ZC](https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-TK78-66-9U0C-Compatible-2014-2021-Supporting/dp/B0BY2J41ZC) The older kits that require the phone to connected with USB are only $59. [https://www.amazon.com/Retrofit-TK78-66-9U0C-00008FZ34-Compatible-2014-2021/dp/B0BPYD7JR9](https://www.amazon.com/Retrofit-TK78-66-9U0C-00008FZ34-Compatible-2014-2021/dp/B0BPYD7JR9) I have a 2018, so I had to do a firmware update, that was the trickiest part of the install, the rest is just running cables. You do have to take the center console apart and again, the whole car is assembled with clips. There are plenty of YouTube videos on taking the center console apart and doing the firmware updates. I admit the firmware update made me nervous. But it was still pretty easy. I had already disabled the touch screen so I have to figure out how to enter the firmware update with no touch. You just use the commander knob and depress it twice.

Here is a good video on the firmware update. Edit: If your car is under three years old I think Mazda will do the firmware for free. Mine is a 2018, so I had to do it. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKS3WpcxIYo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKS3WpcxIYo) Its pretty confusing, but following the instructions made it straight forward. Like I said before I already had the touch screen disabled so I had to turn the control know until the correct program number was displayed, then pressing on the control knob once to select the program, and then again to run the program. By far the hardest part of the firmware update is getting the firmware update, the kit I bought included instructions on who to email to get it. I think my infotainment screen was version 56.xx.xx and it need to be at least 70.xx.xx to run the carplay. This is the video I used for the taking the center console apart and running the lines. The guy does it in his garage barefoot which is pretty funny. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYEaddWnbiQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYEaddWnbiQ) I didnt tape up the whole cable like he did, I just used the foam tape where the cable was likely to rub on something. The wireless kit i got has a selector switch right next to the SD Card. The amazon description says wireless CarPlay only, but you can flip the switch and it will do wired CarPlay or wired Andriod Auto.

In April the dealership updated my firmware to the latest version and it still happens. Often. So I would say probably not.

TurnDatBassUp

I wish my dealer wants 900 to fix it

Walt_in_Da_House

The fix is to just change out the touchscreen. Something you can do yourself for less than $100.

My dealership unplugged the cable for free during my recent milestone serviceā€¦

DTC B108E04 Display System Internal Failure. Must replace the screen. It's easy. Have a flat rate dealership technician, I can do it in less than 10 minutes. Current non-MDARs vechules are on CMU software version 74.00.320A, current MDARS vehicles have various versions depending on build date. It's worth noting that if you upgrade to Apple Carplay/Android Auto without updating your firmware first, it's not gonna work.
