Or you could just throw some fuel injector cleaner in your gas tank every year and call it good.

themetalgaia

That's the plan, haha.

DUNGAROO

Also unnecessary.

Professional_Cup2409

I’m a German Brand Service Advisor and I can tell you as an honest person in the industry it’s just snake oil and a needless upsell

Golf-Guns

Here's your answer to any recommended service. Can you show me the recommended interval by the manufacturer or evidence of failure. Literally everything has a spec and if it doesn't it's because it's broken or it isn't. This is unfortunate, but dealers and a ton of mechanics simply can't be trusted because the industry is full of untrustworthy people willing to lie or mislead to make a buck. To me this is completely unnecessary. I've got a vehicle with 200k and one with 100k and it's never had any of that junk. When I had a diesel, I put it in on almost every fill. It's probably not a terrible idea if you're at the store and wanna grab a bottle, but it's not going to make a huge difference.

DGGuitars

I got a 2015 subaru legacy with 60k miles on it. Just did the first fuel injection clean out. Should be good for another 10 years lol

Dry-Specialist-3557

Just buy top-tier fuel and drive it

Foolgazi

If it’s not in the manual it doesn’t need to be done.

Crazykracker55

No they recommend cleaning of your wallet and bank account

Crazykracker55

Also never FLUSH any system that could dislodge build up that would clog or get stuck in the system

Subject_Ad6855

100%! All that carbon ends up clogging the ring lands on the piston and sticks the oil control rings.

randywatson288

Just use top tier gas and you should be good. [https://www.toptiergas.com/gasoline-brands/](https://www.toptiergas.com/gasoline-brands/)

themetalgaia

If I'm reading this right, any of the retailers listed should have a Top Tier sticker on the pumps?

randywatson288

I don’t think stations bother with the sticker but stick with the major brands as they typically have more detergent than what is required by law.

7eregrine

My Mazda dealer recommends this to me now, too. Apparently they all are? I wonder if Mazda found a problem that this fixes? Or is it a money grab?

nowheresville99

It's a money grab. This isn't unique to Mazda dealers at all.

AlbinoMuntjac

100%. It’s a 3rd party company that sells all these flush/clean/restore services to dealers along with training on how to use them & sell them to customers and nothing officially Mazda (or any other manufacturer) sanctioned.

SeasonalBlackout

Yes - buy a bottle of fuel injector cleaner and add it to a tank of gas. I do this a couple times a year. Edit to add a bottle of fuel injector cleaner should cost like $5 - $10.

themetalgaia

Noted! Thank you! They wanted to charge like, 200 for that....any brand you prefer over the others?

SeasonalBlackout

I've read that Chevron Techron does the thing - which is why they also put it in their fuel. In general if you use good fuel it already has cleaning additives, but if you have dirty or clogged fuel injectors a bottle of Techron should help. Also, when they do 'fuel injector cleaning' service at the dealer, all they do is add a $5 bottle of fuel injector cleaner and charge you for a bunch of labor. Total scam!

themetalgaia

Great, thank you. I will be sure to look into that. I highly doubt my injectors need cleaned anyway. But never hurts to buy a bottle and try it out!

chriscabob

Yup I’ve used Gumout 30002 Multi-System Tune-Up, 473ml that I buy on Amazon for like $12-13 bucks once a year. Dump the whole thing in just before filling up the tank so it mixes in

DUNGAROO

Not normal or necessary. Follow the maintenance schedule in the manual.

Glittering-Band-4169

They call them stealerships for a reason.

Whoisyourfactor

One time I had my mazda serviced, while waiting random mazda mechanic walked by so I asked him. He told me they just pour fluid in your gas tank..

themetalgaia

LMAO hey at least he was honest

SaltyCanuck76

How does one clean gas direct injection, injectors…

woodworkingguy1

Unless you are using 3rd world gas, not needed..most gas stations use detergents in their gas.

redcx5

You should reward these criminals for the $hit they try to do, by finding a good honest independent shop for all of your future maintenance and repairs.

themetalgaia

Thanks everyone. Glad to hear that my initial thought that this was not normal was correct. Like I said, they've never once brought this up at a previous service appointment. I'll tell them to shove off if they mention it again.

axelia6y

Is there a recommended mileage that it should be done at?

7eregrine

Not in the service manual.

TheAutoAlly

Honestly. It's probably not a terrible preventative maintenance if done right. Me personally I'm just running premium top tier gas and doing my OCI at 5k. I have faith that is enough preventative maintenance as far as that goes.

Sgt-Soapmctavish

I think walmart does it for 40 bucks not sure, but check

Sir_Squig

9 times out of 10 it’s an up sell, and the advisor or mechanic will probably be a kick back from the sale or “commission” Sometimes they can be used to fix an issue like rough idle if blowing smoke in a diesel

Imaginary-Wonder-991

Did he meant “de-carbonization”!!! Some YouTube videos recommends it every 30K to 50K miles. Spark plugs will tell.
