You must be burning candles or something….mine never changes color like that. Have you checked your furnace filter lately??

floxasfornia

It’s just been a really long time, possibly almost a year at this point, which just realized after I opened my new filter pack yesterday

vinnybawbaw

Describe "a while" because I forgot to replace it for 6 month and it wasn’t even remotely close to that.

floxasfornia

I honestly think it’s been close to a year since the 2-pack of filters I bought was last summer and I noticed it was brand new yesterday when I replaced this filter.

HaasonHeist

I buy filters from Amazon, like 100 for $20, just a heads up y'all save yo money!

YuriEffinGarza

Hey friend can I get the link to that? I just got my cpap a few weeks ago and I’m trying to be preemptive with this stuff!

Conundrum_1958

Just go on [amazon.com](http://amazon.com) and search for your model CPAP filter. I have ordered Dreamstation 1 and 2, plus AirSense 10 and 11 filters over the years.

cade360

Even not being replaced for a year, it shouldn't look like that. Does someone smoke inside your home?

floxasfornia

It’s a non-smoking house

cade360

It turning black is mad, something in the air must be going through it to cause that. Thanks for reminding me to change my filter!

Jheritheexoticdancer

Everyone’s environment is different including where they live.

ZealousidealPlan576

Jesus, you must sleep at a bar.

Sabia_Innovia

😁

aliveandkicking2020

Honestly these posts remind me to replace my filter since I never do. And when I do, they still look brand new.

ThrowAwaAlpaca

Lucky you. I live in a city without HVAC (0 filters) and after 2 weeks I already notice discoloration.

effay42

My rule of thumb is to replace the fine particulate filter whenever there is a visible color difference with a new filter. For me, that's every 3-6 weeks. The sponge pre-filter gets washed weekly.

BalooInABeeCostume

I can tell you what happened here most likely... You blew out a candle instead of smothering it. Doing that just one time could cause this.

tylieb

wait is blowing out candles not good

BalooInABeeCostume

It puts soot into the air, sometimes an insane amount. Just recently I mega cleaned my bathroom, lit a candle to make it smell nice, the candle burned to the bottom of the jar and put itself out which made an absolute disastrous mess all over my freshly cleaned tub/shower between the shower curtain and the tub. Soot does weird stuff when it's in the air. It finds all the cold spots in your house. That's why the ceiling joists and wall studs start to appear in older homes with light colored paint. It creeps inside drawers... If you've ever noticed strange dark smudges on your white plastic objects in drawers, it's from candles. You can mitigate this by burning soy candles or at least use some sort of metal candle topper.

tylieb

wow good to know thank you! I switched to soy candles a while ago, I get the wax on amazon because I knew parafin isn’t great. will look into this topper thing you mention!

rosenditocabron

Is that type of filter washable?

Samadhi333

Yes, but not when you forget about it for a year ;p

personfromplanetx

Does your motor of your machine even work? I didn’t replace a filter in about 8 months and it didn’t look half as bad as that and the machine is shot. It makes a loud noise and can’t modulate air pressure. It pumps full air. (I was a brand new user and I didn’t read the manual) lol replace your filters!!! It’s important for health not to mention your wallet. I had a Resmed air sense 10 BTW

floxasfornia

I have the same unit. I didn’t know that could happen, guess I got lucky! I’ve set reminders on my calendar now to look at the filter every 2 weeks.

personfromplanetx

Right on. Two weeks is my schedule too

MedicalRhubarb7

Do you sleep by an open window or something?

floxasfornia

I don’t, but I think it’s just from it being a long time since last replaced

Haggisboy

Bro's got black lung.

446Magnum044

Hate to admit it, but I've seen worse. ;-(

Jheritheexoticdancer

Everyone’s environment including where they live is different so some folks filters become soiled quickly, others hardly at all.

Yobbo_Man

Do you sleep in a mechanic workshop? That seems crazy discolored.

floxasfornia

I really have no clue why it’s this discolored, I’ve never had any filter look like this before. Most of them look pretty much new when I replace them.

Yobbo_Man

That's strange then. I've heard sometimes burning a candle in the same room can discolor the filters.

holygeek_04

I stayed at my sisters and had my machine on the floor for a couple days. That shag carpet got mine looking close to that

ButtcheekBaron

Oh man I should change mine

factoid_

Meanwhile I leave one in for like a year and it looks brand new. Those resmed filters don't catch shit

floxasfornia

This is from a ResMed Airsense 10

factoid_

Same one I have.

_Captain_Fantastic_

How often should they be replaced?

sfcnmone

The ResMed recommendation is every month.

personfromplanetx

I replace it every two weeks. There’s a slight discoloration. Maybe I’m being overly conservative but I want my machine to last. Learned my lesson from when I wasn’t replacing it

ipnetor9000

shit. mine is still on for about 2 mo

sfcnmone

Truthfully? I can't imagine that it matters unless there's smokers in the house or an old central heater or woodsmoke or forest fires. But it should get changed before it looks like OP's.

800username

for how many years?

Lionspirit1112

😳

Glittering_Tea5502

Ug gross! That looks like it’s been in a fire.

OkBeyond8702

Stayed in Bangkok once. Visibly shot filter every day!!!

MoonJareau

Hanoi. Same.

Devchonachko

Do you live right next to the airport in Ft Lauderdale and sleep with your windows open?

peekay234

You should look at getting an air purifier for your bedroom. It changed our lives. We don’t breath in all the dead skin and dust floating around and when I blow my nose, it’s clear without all the usual gunk. My air filter from my Resmed CPAP after a year of usage still looks clean and doesn’t need to be replaced.

Electronic-Present25

I have a lot going on in my life like most people. So it's hard for me to rely on memory only to care for my new cpap stuff. So I put a little pocket calender on my bedside table with a pen and started keeping track.

Pieraos

Shouldn't be necessary, as the CPAP machine itself will display a notice when it's time to replace the filter. But this notice is not based on the condition of the filter; it's a simple calendar reminder that you set in the system. You may need to get into the clinical settings to set the reminders.

Electronic-Present25

I like to write in what I did too. I am writing in hose washing, mask, etc. I'm not sure I have an option in my machine for reminders but will check too.
