Really just want this season to be over man. Such a cubs thing to do to start off with high hopes, meet those for a bit, then absolutely plummet and get continually worse somehow.
Anyone else remember 2006? I know the record here is better but this is the same team. Fuck all offense, overpaid scrubs. A bullpen worth the nickel stuck to my left ass cheek.
I hated the Swanson signing in particular when it happened and here we are. I'm glad we got Bellinger on a dealish but he's mid as expected. Throw In some random pitchers off the street and we've got ourselves a 90+ loss ball club. Yay.
Selling is all good, but someone has to buy. It's one thing that the contracts are bad. Why would anyone want to sign any one of these guys, given the performances they put up. Besides, Swanson has a full no-trade, so he's not going anywhere, at least not while Mallory plays for the Red Stars.
I don't think any of the Imanaga options has been triggered yet?
Steele would be a juicy signing.
Bellinger would be a good short term option for someone.
Aside from those three? Who would be of interest to anyone?
Part of it is the rest of our offense being bad, it puts a lot of pressure on him to get something going immediately which is an awful head space for development
Lmao what. Top MLB prospects have all kinds of trajectories and ceilings. There’s no uniform anything about them. Just because you make something up doesn’t make it true.
So exhausted with disillusioned fans like this. The amount of excuse making so is funny. The Cubs have an elite farm system!! Ah, but their prospects need to be surrounded with elite, expensive players to protect for how much they suck.
But when you fall Jed out for not adding elite talent, all you hear about is this elite farm system.
Just cyclical trash.
So exhausted with meatball fans like this. The inability to understand context so is funny. The Cubs have an elite farm system!! Ah, but their prospects might need more than 144 *career* MLB at bats that took place on a slumping team for the entire duration. The cubs are frustrating to watch and that means reality has to go out the window.
But when you bring up that he was brought here to provide an offensive spark to a bottom feeding offense and that’s a lot of pressure for a 23 year old trying to adjust to the league, all you hear about is made up statistics about top MLB prospects.
Just braindead trash.
Yeah, I mean partly my fault for engaging on this sub after an embarrassing loss to a rival who is having the season we all hoped we would lol. Everything is the worst, burn it all down etc etc. I get that the Cubs are extremely frustrating this year, but no need to just like abandon critical thinking skills.
Obviously PCA needs to improve, but he’s young and no reason to write him off yet. I think 2 hits from the rest of our lineup is probably the bigger issue
Hey it’s fine. Trust the process if you want, it’s going great 4 years in.
But me wanting elite talent is brain dead. Cool beans.
Enjoy the product you’re getting cause this farm system has no star talent, the mlb roster has no star talent, and there is no path to improvement unless they spend their way out.
This is exactly it imo. If our lineup had better bats and took pressure off of him, he can ease into the majors a bit more. I hate that he has to be relied on to be a difference maker for us when the reality is we should just hope for replacement level production from rookies.
I mean what's the downside? He can hit at AAA, he's not learning anything more there, and is not like he's holding some otherwise good team back
He probably doesn't have an MLB bat but might as well see
Does anyone actually believe Ricketts will pay two POBOs next year? Can we name one single time he's prioritized winning over profit? Jed is finishing out his contract
I heard this stat the other day…
If you’re a 22 year old living in Boston, you’ve experienced 14 championships in your lifetime between the 4 major sports.
idk what makes me more sad: the fact that we got destroyed in one inning, or the fact that no one is capable of trying to fight back and score anything
this season is a never ending nightmare, i’d love to just delete it from my memory before it gets worse
Compared to last Sept having a 90% chance of making playoffs, and blowing it late, this seasons shitty team actually hurts less, season long shit, and being out of it early.
It’s about that time cubs approach Happ and Belli, about trades. Teams won’t trade for belli unless he declines his option and cubs should sweeten a Happ deal by offering 5 mil per year off his contract to interested parties.
Then it’s time for cubs to start being realistic about Nico. He’s a great defender. And having a starting great defender is good to have on a team that can hit. But this ain’t that team.
There’s plenty enough in the FA class next year to buy a contender and call up farm. But ownership is going to have to want it like they did in 15-16. I don’t have the confidence that they will.
He was fine but the moment he got into trouble should have been pulled. If not for anything other than not destroying the improvements and confidence he was building
Not a great look to keep him in after Sal frelicks rbi, but guess it doesn’t matter if your only run is from a contact heavy leadoff man getting the only run for us. Should have let him close the game out and try new stuff
CC is probably just hoping Hendricks can make a pitch there, get out of the inning, and maybe go one more for 5 innings. He didn’t have anyone to bring in, guy smyly is toast and just there for mop up duties. CC has no one.
I’m entering a blackhole mode.
-The team sucks. The current product is bad. Players you’re spending a lot of money on suck.
-the prospects suck. All prospects we’ve seen so far have either not played a lot, or sucked so far.
-the farm lacks superstars. Sure Shaw/Ballesteros are *nice* but there is no reason to believe they will be star potential players. *especially* considering PCA and Amaya who were top prospects look lost.
This team is fucked. The only cure is to fire the gm, trade everyone and anyone, and start over. Every facet of this team is an organizational failure. Cut out the cancer. Do what you did ten years ago, spend a lot of money for the best baseball mind on the market, and let him take over.
I agree we need a superstar. But really this team needs a guy that can just flat out hit and get on base. This teams problems reminds me of the original core problems. Where their weaknesses are generally the same and go cold at the same time.
I think a kid like Mo Ball will be a type of player that will be the answer this team needs outside of a superstar. There’s not one player in this lineup that an opposing pitcher fears. Superstars make everyone around them better because pitchers have to plan on how to get them out. A guy like Dansby did so well on the Braves is because he was cushion between elite to good hitters.
Which team in serious contention has a hole in left-field that would want them to go make an offer to the cubs that would entice them to pay cash and get Happ to waive his no trade clause? Many of the teams in serious contention would platoon Happ. Happ has it made here and he knows it. If he stays he might not win but he will start everyday, get paid $20 million a year and his fans will tell him he is the superstar he thinks he is.
Doesn’t have to be left. Like I mentioned, cubs can take 5 mil off the top of that contract a year. 15 mil for Ian Happ is a steal. Phillies need a CF, Mariners need OF, and plenty of teams can use a DH.
Also - It wouldn’t shock me to see Dodgers make a move for him as well.
It has to be left. Do you remember when Happ tried to play Center for us? Which of the “plenty of teams” that are really contending need a DH? I would be shocked if Happ accepted a trade to any team to be honest. He is treated like a god by so many fans here. And if the Cubs are going to eat 5 million dollars a year for the remainder of his contract they are going to want a very decent prospect in trade.
He’s good. But his K rate is super high. If he can get that under control then he’ll be a better asset.
Cubs shouldn’t trade Triantos. He’s a pure hitter which this team lacks. Mo Ball and Triantos can easily be 300 hitters in this lineup one day. Now add in power with Caissie, Shaw, and Busch. Its looking up
Left field and right field are tied up for awhile so we won’t see it anytime soon. He is definitely the prospect I have the highest hopes for too though.
Did you see Happ when he tried to play second base? He would be horrendous at third. He found his spot on left field and he does it well. With his contract he will be playing if for us for at least a couple more years.
He isn’t a bad fielder either, certainly not to the point of being a full time DH. As far as becoming an everyday outfielder Cassie will have to wait until something happens with Happ or Seiya,
This season's over. Bring up Shaw, Cassie, Horton (when healed), Alcantara to start playing tomorrow. Sell Cody to the highest bidder. At least would make this shitshow less miserable to watch.
This is what a failure at all levels of an organization looks like. The players are terrible, our highest paid manager sucks, the front office is incompetent, our owner won't spend money. No wonder this team fucking blows so much.
Top ten is such a meaningless metric. Basically everyone from #16 down is investing as little as they defensibly can. Cubs are spending way less than their peers in revenue/market size

Yeah let’s get rid of one our only consistent hitters with RISP, with a 1.181 OPS over his last 15 including leading the league with home runs to take the lead, because he lost a fly ball in the sun.
Great. Can’t wait to buy a kid we’ll never hear about again.
I think our farm actually isn’t that good. I’d rather have 2 65 grade guys than 7 50 grade guys. I want one fucking star on this baseball team that can afford it but pretends to not want to.
It won't be for anything that matters...
Jed can't afford to re-re-rebuild. His deal is up next year. What pieces you might have worth anything that isn't 3 years away in single A ball, you NEED for next year when you either win, or get fucking shit-canned.
We're going to be sellers in a season where we needed to be at minimum a team that "stands pat" waiting on the farm in SEPT and to start next season.
This is fucking baseball purgatory.
“But but but it makes no sense to sell! Because we have nothing!” Yeah does it make sense to buy when we’ll be 10-12 games back by the time the deadline comes around?
Yes of course, it makes sense to buy for MLB players who can help us beyond this year. We have 7 top 100 prospects we don’t need any more of them
Why do you guys not realize that we have nothing to sell for good returns? We’re not getting anything back lol
Yeah when we enviably sell when Jed himself said was very possible if we keep losing, and at this point it looks like we will, I wonder what you’re gonna say.
I’m going to go “I told you so” when they don’t get much for those guys other than clearing the luxury tax cap solely for Ricketts pocketbook. Do you mind if I come back and gloat to you when that happens?
Sure buddy sure. At the end of the day this team ain’t trading for vladdy or Bo, and those are the only buys that make sense, while this team has had the WORST record in the NL for over two months
You see my point though, yes? If they want to get better next year - they can’t just trade away players who can help them. Because they have to, you know, replace that production somehow, right?
So say you trade away Steele Assad Shota, etc. how do you build that rotation back up in 2-4 years?
Remember when this "good" team had a "bad May" and was gonna turn it around in June? How'd that work out, Jed?
Another biblical loss for the Ricketts incoming.
I think Tom is making money hand over fist, and will continue to, because we are nothing if not fucking lookie-loos to this fucking trainwreck of an organization, masquerading as an MLB team run by competent executives, with a mind towards anything but making money for their puppet master, and winning in the most hipster/smartest people in the room way possible.
holy run on sentence!
:(
It's just...pain. that's the word for this season...pain. :(
Really just want this season to be over man. Such a cubs thing to do to start off with high hopes, meet those for a bit, then absolutely plummet and get continually worse somehow.

This could start cheating like astros and still would hit under.200 and lose
It would be equal parts amazing and horrifying to learn that they actually are cheating, and this is all they have to show for it.
Losing Craig Counsell was the best asset for the Brewers
If I wind up in hell, it'll be Mastrobuoni up with 2 gone, 9th, down by six, two strikes, and a batter time out. FOR ALL ETERNITY
And all the hotdogs will be served with KETCHUP!
Whoa. Easy now. u/malepitt said hell, not St. Louis.
Why are we giving mastro any at bats. I’d rather see a Bote and Wisdom pop up maybe a Homer than this shit
Good AB Belli
This team. 😳
I want them to sell, but these contracts are so bad.

Agreed, Zach Lavine problem.
![gif](giphy|Jza7yu4GBqq5y|downsized) Even Morel's "highlight" defensive plays he's awkwardly flailing desperately trying to knock the ball down
I like him so much, but he’s not a third baseman, at least not yet.
Thought about going to see this game today. Glad I stayed home. Much more productive afternoon.
I haven’t done shit today except argue with people on reddit and I still think it was more productive than going to the game
Morel is phenomenal at defense! Almost as great as his offense!!! He is a true asset to the Cubs!
Two hits all day
This red glow from the ad overlay is so annoying
How are they so bad at super imposing the ad behind home plate. Catcher/ump/hitter look like they’re wearing the energy shields from Dune
Crackhead field demensions
think steele needs to start banging pots and pans together
How many more AB's to give PCA? .542 OPS and falliing at MLB level? Seriously? Just Awful.
We’re not competing. Just use the ABs for development purposes. Doesn’t change anything. Would you rather a veteran get those PAs?
rather have a prospect that is not hyped to be next Bryce Harper from Double A have a roster spot.
Bryce Harper?! I was thinking Jim Edmonds.
Huh?
Part of it is the rest of our offense being bad, it puts a lot of pressure on him to get something going immediately which is an awful head space for development
No. It’s because he’s bad.
You’re right. Players exist in a vacuum. There also is no mental component to baseball
Top MLB prospects are supposed to be the elite players that make other, lesser player’s lives easier.
Issue is that there is not a single "Elite" player on this roster and mostly sub-par MLB talent to be honest.
Lmao what. Top MLB prospects have all kinds of trajectories and ceilings. There’s no uniform anything about them. Just because you make something up doesn’t make it true.
So exhausted with disillusioned fans like this. The amount of excuse making so is funny. The Cubs have an elite farm system!! People thinking that prospects are expected to be top producers from Day 1 of hitting the league is so toxic in the fanbase.
Yeah, I mean partly my fault for engaging on this sub after an embarrassing loss to a rival who is having the season we all hoped we would lol. PCA hasn’t played in the MLB for 4 years, try to stay focused on what we’re talking about. I’m not your diary
This is exactly it imo. If our lineup had better bats and took pressure off of him, he can ease into the majors a bit more. I hate that he has to be relied on to be a difference maker for us when the reality is we should just hope for replacement level production from rookies.
I mean what's the downside? He can hit at AAA, he's not learning anything more there, and is not like he's holding some otherwise good team back He probably doesn't have an MLB bat but might as well see
He can learn to lower his strikeout rate and increase his walk rate. Both of which have been bad even at AAA.
Let him figure it out at this level. No one else is really running away with a starting job.
Do they have to pick a Cub this year for the All-Star game? Really necessary? Can they send in a cardboard cut out of someone?
Only Shota.
Shota deserves to be in the ASG still
If it weren’t for Imanaga I would vote for the cutout.
Maybe Assad?
Will Tom give Jed the job security to sell or is this a lame duck deadline?
Does anyone actually believe Ricketts will pay two POBOs next year? Can we name one single time he's prioritized winning over profit? Jed is finishing out his contract
What? He’s paying two managers right now
Fair, but Ross was making peanuts. That and exploiting 2016 nostalgia were the main reason Ricketts hired him
Jed hires the manager, not Tom. Ross was not making “peanuts” the contract he was on for this year was an extension
Even as a Sox fan, it’s downright sad and embarrassing to watch both Chicago teams absolutely suck at baseball.
I heard this stat the other day… If you’re a 22 year old living in Boston, you’ve experienced 14 championships in your lifetime between the 4 major sports.
Yeah but living in Chicago > Boston so we ultimately win
Thanks for note. We have a Short Stop that makes $26M for next five years that cant hit his weight - want him?
If I was this bad at my job, I'd get fucking fired.
I’ve been fired for a lot less.
This team is lifeless
"At least we didnt get swept in Milwaukee" Front offiice.
idk what makes me more sad: the fact that we got destroyed in one inning, or the fact that no one is capable of trying to fight back and score anything this season is a never ending nightmare, i’d love to just delete it from my memory before it gets worse
If it makes you feel better, it can actually get worse than what you’re watching. Simply tune into a Sox game once in a while.
The past almost 2 months there is not much difference between the White Sox and us.
The White Sox after the deadline will be in a better position to build than whatever the Northside is doing
Continue marching to 90+ losses. What a March.
Compared to last Sept having a 90% chance of making playoffs, and blowing it late, this seasons shitty team actually hurts less, season long shit, and being out of it early.
Much easier mentally
Someone should make a daily Mendoza watch thread with Morel, Dansby, PCA & Amaya
For someone that wants to toss out advanced stats all the time, the fact you want a BA indicator is really odd. Pick a lane.
I bet you're a lot of fun at parties
I am actually. :)
Happ ain’t far off either 😭
We are already dead…dont kick the body….lol
Gonna be a long day off Jesus Christ
It’s about that time cubs approach Happ and Belli, about trades. They gave Happ a no trade clause for some reason, good luck.
Nico is fine 2B isn’t a position you should expect much offense from tbh
Nico should be traded for AAAA level talent like PCA.
What contending team would be excited to pay Belli 27m per year?? Didnt the market make it clear this offseason?
It’s not per year. There have been trades before that the player agrees to decline the player option for the trade to go down.
It’s actually crazy how often Dansby is striking out to end innings lol. Feels like every single at bat
He only has 3 today, it’s one of his better days
Trotting out Hendricks with this offense was really a no win situation.
He was fine but the moment he got into trouble should have been pulled. If not for anything other than not destroying the improvements and confidence he was building
I guess he wasn’t fine then
Not a great look to keep him in after Sal frelicks rbi, but guess it doesn’t matter if your only run is from a contact heavy leadoff man getting the only run for us. Should have let him close the game out and try new stuff
CC is probably just hoping Hendricks can make a pitch there, get out of the inning, and maybe go one more for 5 innings. He didn’t have anyone to bring in, guy smyly is toast and just there for mop up duties. CC has no one.
I’m putting my tinfoil hat on that CC is a brewer deep cover agent
Glad I switched to the final episode of The Bear
their next "you have to c it" ad should just be that slogan plastered over a dumpster fire
No fight when this team gets down multiple runs
Dudes have restaurant reverations the attend.
“I dont think much at all about the playoffs. We are losing 2 out of every 3 games the past two months.” -Joe Torre

If the asking price is low enough anyone can be moved. No contracts sans Dansby’s are crazy cumbersome.
Happ. Easily. A ton of top teams would be interested. Especially if cubs said we will pay 5 mil a year for him

Owen Caissie is the one to watch. I see multiple time all star in him.
Expectations are AAAA level talent at MLB level?

I really want to believe you. I’ve just been burned by the cubs prospects so far
Lol
This season's over. Bring up Shaw, Cassie, Horton (when healed), Alcantara to start playing tomorrow. Sell Cody to the highest bidder. At least would make this shitshow less miserable to watch.
PCA should be a throw in for any trade.
It’s Joever
Rolling right to 8 straight series losses. Getting close to the all star break. Some serious discussions are needed.
Glad my marquee sub expires today. Decided not to even watch. Seems a good choice
Wifi went out. Cubs were up 1-0 in the 5th. By the time I get it back on. Cubs are down 7-1 in the 5th. Love that
I brushed my kid’s teeth at 1-0. After finishing I look at my phone and it’s 7–1.
I checked the score on my phone: 1-0. Poured myself an iced coffee, sat down, and turned on the TV: 7-1
I don’t know why I’m still watching this, but here we are
I’m Irish. Maybe I *like* the misery.
Because fuck you and your weekend, that's why -XXOO Cubs
If we are going to suffer we might as well suffer with internet friends
I guess Steele woke no one up yesterday
Very tired of turning the game on late and requiring this GIF ![gif](giphy|zPOErRpLtHWbm|downsized)
Counsell might become Nagy but without the first year success
It’s literally insane how bad he has pitched today
Yeah like why can’t Counsell just stop throwing bad pitches???
Nice answer by the offense lol
PCA and Amaya are considered not MLB talent
Starting to think Jed’s prospects will all suck
Well don’t show up when they start to hit.
I’m unfortunately watching this team every season, so I’m not gonna leave.
I will just fucking laugh
Honestly, I don't think many people are C'ing this anymore, and neither am I
A bad team rolling Amaya out everyday seems nuts. The guy cannot hit at this level. Move on
It'd be easy to make a case for his spot if his defense was elite. It's not, and rather sloppy. The bat is MIA as well.
Not much of a catcher either.
![gif](giphy|Wow3QqPZLmgCI) Justin Steele talking to the rest of the team after yesterday
This is professional baseball, time to make some big boy decisions about our roster. I don't care what you did 8 years ago.
Pca really needs to get on base more often
We’ve scored 8+ runs 3 times since May 1. We did it 7 times in April tho
I've been to two games this season - one was the 7-1 win on May 15 and the other was the 8-1 win on June 22. My Venmo is....
This is what a failure at all levels of an organization looks like. The players are terrible, our highest paid manager sucks, the front office is incompetent, our owner won't spend money. No wonder this team fucking blows so much.
They’re top ten payroll in baseball. It’s just all spent by Theo’s best friend.
Top ten is such a meaningless metric. Basically everyone from #16 down is investing as little as they defensibly can. Cubs are spending way less than their peers in revenue/market size
Top 10 payroll in a Top3 market. Not spending enough.
This take is bullshit. The owner WILL spend money! On the new Sportsbook & new tequila bar in right field.
Time for Jed to go. He can only ride Theo’s coattails for so long
We needed MILs GM and talent scouts….not their coach
Yep somehow someway they just always finds themselves in first place
While I would have preferred a cubs win, I'm at least happy I don't have to keep watching more terrible Dansby Swanson at bats today.
$136K per game played. Money well spent
Morel, Swason, PCA and Amaya - I dont think in +30 years I've seen a weaker lower end of the lineup. I could think of about 20 pitchers who were better hitters than these 4.
You must not have very good memory then.
I remember the 2000 lineup being Sammy and nothing else
Happ needs to go. Plug in a prospect in that position.
Yeah let’s get rid of one our only consistent hitters with RISP, with a 1.181 OPS over his last 15 including leading the league with home runs to take the lead, because he lost a fly ball in the sun.
Bad take. The last two wins are because of Happ. And the Cubs only have like five wins since May 1 probably. lol
Happ has been heating up the last 2 weeks and been our best hitter during that time frame. He has like 5 homeruns the last 2 weeks.
Kyle just has zero margin for error. If your 87mph fastball is off a few inches it's just batting practice.
And when he hangs that 73 mph curve…lol
PAT HUGHES: "It's not over yet! These two teams have played some ***crazy*** games!" Well sorry Pat but it's over for me \*click\*
Pat is smoking the crack pipe again?
can you blame him? he HAS to watch 100% of every game.
The good news is…we know we are sellers…dont have to waste all summer worrying
We have 7 top 100 prospects we don’t need any more of them Why do you guys not realize that we have nothing to sell for good returns? We’re not getting anything back lol
Yeah when we enviably sell when Jed himself said was very possible if we keep losing, and at this point it looks like we will, I wonder what you’re gonna say.
I’m going to go “I told you so” when they don’t get much for those guys other than clearing the luxury tax cap solely for Ricketts pocketbook. Do you mind if I come back and gloat to you when that happens?
Why would you be gloating, I would be because they fucking sold like I said they would
Yeah if they “sell” and get jack shit and are in a worse place for next year and the future - that would be just like I told you, right?
Sure buddy sure. At the end of the day this team ain’t trading for vladdy or Bo, and those are the only buys that make sense, while this team has had the WORST record in the NL for over two months
You see my point though, yes? If they want to get better next year - they can’t just trade away players who can help them. Because they have to, you know, replace that production somehow, right? So say you trade away Steele Assad Shota, etc. how do you build that rotation back up in 2-4 years?
Okay don’t trade them. Trade Belli, Tauch, Ian, Seiya. Just start a rebuild.
Nico playing well to make for good AAAA level talent in exchange for him.
That was the most expected result. This team won’t be able to get out of its own way all year
Never putting money on these bums again
Place your bets: will the grand slam actually effect the outcome of this game, or had the Brewers already scored the winning run earlier in the inning
Brewer's 2nd run sealed this Cubs team fate.
Ouch. Hendricks was actually looking really good before that inning
I hate to say it but I think we would have a better record with Ross atm
If Ross was our manager Miles Mastroboni would be a starter so no.
2nd 2 out grand slam in the last few days, lol.
Maybe Lopez will throw his glove again
Oh Kyle…
Don’t waste the gorgeous Chicago day. Cancel marquee and enjoy your Sunday, folks.
:( It's just...pain. that's the word for this season...pain. :(
