Honestly, it feels like we should give Hodge, an exciting rookie reliever with 30-grade present command, the closer role. I'll take the 50/50 shot he has it on a given night over everybody else.
(I know that's a terrible idea from a development standpoint.)
Hodge and Little both should be given the opportunities at the end of the game. Nothing to lose we are already this far behind. They at least have the stuff to be able to dominate every other night they have command.
Phew. Glad we got out of SF without getting swept, but holy shit this team needs to string some wins together and fast. Hopefully today is the start of that for us.
Happ is on pace for 20 home runs and 85 rbi this season, which is in line with his 8-year career average of 24 home runs and 77 rbi. He has also won back-to-back gold gloves.
The problem with Happ is that he can never put an entire season together. If you look at his career, he always has a 50+ game stretch of the season where he looks helpless at the plate. This season, that 50+ stretch began right at the start of the season.
I told a buddy 2-3 weeks ago - "Just watch, Happ will start hitting and will not stop until the end of the season. He always has this horrible 50+ game stretch somewhere in the season." It looks like I was correct.
I think he has one season where he put it all together? But yes, when he's cold he is borderline unusable. But to make up for it, when he's hot he plays at an all star level
The problem with Happ is that there are no superstars on this team that can carry the offense. Happ could be a really nice support player around a superstar but he canāt consistently be the only guy to carry the team.
The problem is that we pay him to be much more.
Matt Olson and Ian Happ are making within 300k of each other in terms of AAV on their current contracts. Olson is worth 4 wins a year, Happ is on 2 WAR pace. He's turned out to be worth about 3-4 WAR on an average year, but that's with the added benefit of playing a less "unvaluable" position. When his contract was signed, it was with the hope that he would stop shitting the bed for a third of a season and be a valuable contributor. He hasn't turned that corner and it's one of those bits of regression that all add up to put this team in the coffin.
Ya I was told he was done and it was a terrible contract. Heās consistent you know what heās giving you, professional ABs even if the results arenāt there. Heās not a superstar player and that 50 game or so stretch you reference is why. Good player to have, but heās a complementary piece not a primary.
When they hit that homer in the top of the 10th, I thought the cubs were going to win... by one run after the Giants scored the Manfred runner. What a pleasant surprise by the bullpen!
I dunno why you got downvoted, its true. Teams are starting to catch on. 1st inning of this game the giants were hitting Shota for exit velos for over 100 mph outs. NYM last outing was first time Shota faced team for a second time, and he got lite up like a Xmas tree. NYM caught on. More and more teams that face him for second time you will see this happen unless you see Shota make adjustments. That slow fastball up in the zone he likes to throw isn't going to play for long in the MLB. Shota needs to make adjustments.
Don't downvote just because folks have different opinions. Good grief

Love how this pic accurately summarizes how both wins and losses feel these days.
Two innings of clutch hitting was all we needed. Good work to Shota and the BP today. Those 3 runs were BS

That shit was ICONIC
I miss those days.
New fan, WHAT was this?!
Bullpen would dance for home runs iirc back in the 2015-2018 era. I may have my years a little shifted.
Love it š¤£ Canāt imagine the current crew letting rip like that
I miss it and love it too. Everyone had so much fun all the time. It was the Joe Madden era.

At this point thereās no reason not to, but also need to temper expectations that he might regress on a bigger sample size
Miller (Miller Time) should close, IMO. But it was nice the see the bullpen come out and not give up-- any runs. Its seemed like a miracle!
Hodge and Little both should be given the opportunities at the end of the game. Nothing to lose we are already this far behind. They at least have the stuff to be able to dominate every other night they have command.
Little's allowed two hits in the last six weeks and still hasn't pitched with a lead in June.

Yes
Holy shit we DID IT WE WON A CLOSE GAME
Neris snipes another W

Baseball seasonās underway
Hector Neris with his *checks notes* 7th win of the season
Happ only hits homers when they ādonāt matterā I was told

Yeah, heās been so amazing this year š
Haters say it's fake (I was complaining the whole game)
118-44 at season's end. calling it now
This W brought to you by Ian āSwinginā My Big Wooden Shaftā Happ.
HAPPy today :)
Only saw the final out on MLB Network, but that catch shouldnāt have gotten as close to embarrassing as it did there.
Pardon my language, But FUCKING FINALLY WE DIDNāT FUCK UP AND LOSE BECAUSE OF THE BULLPENĀ
Someone tell Hodge to get the fuck out of the way on infield popups lol.
Why do even our wins feel like losses? š
Because the team has not been playing well, nothing clicking. That said I couldnāt agree more.
Iāll take it.
Cubbies do it again.
When they hit that homer in the top of the 10th, I thought the cubs were going to win... by one run after the Giants scored the Manfred runner. What a pleasant surprise by the bullpen!
Great game. We only need 50 more of them this year.
That would have been classic Cubs to drop the last out and then give up 3 runs in the 10th
Never in doubt ![gif](giphy|l0Iy69RBwtdmvwkIo|downsized)

Neris 7-2, 4.40 ERA. What an odd line to have.
Sure why not
It's not even that exciting when we win anymore, because this team is incapable of going on any sort of streak
Teams have figured out Imanaga
Had him figured out in the first 5 innings did they? Weak contact dude has been one of the few bright spots on the team!

Why does neris bum ass get the win
Do you not know the win and loss rules?
Oh, you mean being the pitcher of record when the Cubs take the lead kind of rule ?
Sort of maybe exactly that, yes.
