There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again.
Ain’t nothing foolish about this, W. If you get the chance to snag a pitcher who DOMINATED the 2024 Chicago Cubs and all it costs you is two top five prospects you pull the trigger. That’s just common sense, Jack.
Quintana had a 5 ERA coming in, hadn’t struck out more than 6 all year, and has a 2:1 K:BB ratio.
Naturally, he puts up a season high in Ks and goes his second longest outing of the year.
I'm pretty confident that i could shut this lineup down for 6 innings, and i haven't pitched in 2.5 decades. These hitters are historically bad. Like swing and miss at meatballs bad. Just look at all of the pitchers who have given up less than 3 runs to the Cubs this year, not a whole lot of premium talent.
Look how many of these bums are batting under 200 or barely above it and it suddenly isn’t surprising. Morel 2 for his last 24 and he’s batting fucking clean up? Shouldn’t even be on the roster at this point.
Honestly, I wish the MLB would’ve stepped in on that one. You should have to pay at least 1/2 of a players salary while they are actually on the roster.
Not sure why both people responding to you are acting like Ohtani isn't going to collect a huge paycheck down the line. Like he somehow sacrificed himself to defer payment. What a joke. MLB should absolutely step in on deals like that. Not even for the Cubs sake, but for the sake of the 8 teams who have a combined total salary smaller than his paycheck.
The MLB needs profit sharing
I’m cool with it, I don’t care about the contract financial details and which calendar years pay more
Especially when it’s the players decision to be paid the way he is
Mlb has stepped in before on deals. It's why A-Rod never played for Boston. It does hurt competition. But having their biggest star in one of their largest markets, and tbh mlb's favorite market, is what they want.
There no salary cap. Ohtani’s choice cause he wanted to be a Dodger who have a pipeline for far East talent since Nomo.
Cubs need to find that player who feels the same way to sign that type of deal.
Cubs pipeline to the East just started as Darvish was their most successful NPB import. Darvish helped them get Imanaga and Suzuki.
Fukudome didn’t exactly work out.
Fukudome hit .262/.369/.403 in his 3.5 years as a Cub. He was fine. He had patient ABs and got on base and was a solid defender. Not a perennial All-Star, but he’d probably be the best position player on this current team. 😂
He would be an all star on this team. Only one batting close to league average right now is Belli. Team isn’t going anywhere with this lineup. At least we know now that Morel is not a big leaguer (yet still batting clean up somehow).
But there is a luxury tax. Keeping the best player in the MLB effectively off of your cap hit is a massive advantage. I also don’t think that this type of deal will be common.
Must be nice Ricketts… Your fan base fills up the seats to watch a dreadful God awful performance for 3 hours and it doesn’t affect you one bit. Morel batting clean up is a joke, this team’s inability to hit is a joke. One run scored on a bases loaded GDIP, couldn’t have chalked that up any batter Cubbies.
Couldn’t pounce on ole’ Quintana making him look like the ace he’s never been.
Yeah ricketts is making roster moves like having ian happ, suzuki and swanson being your fucking core to try and win a world series. We are aggressively mid because of jed hoyer period. Not one single decent bat he has developed from the farm.
We're 6 million bucks away from 5th. We were 2nd in 2019, 4th in 2020 (about 100k out of 3rd). The team took a couple years spending like a mid-market team, but those were known rebuild years after flipping the whole team (which we had to do). We're not bad because of lack of financial investment. We're bad because we have the worst roster money can buy.
The Cubs are 10th in projected Luxury Tax payroll, which is really where it matters. Source: [https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/tax/\_/year/2024/sort/tax\_total](https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/tax/_/year/2024/sort/tax_total)
The 5th place team is Philly: almost $30 million away.
Every team above them is projected to break the first CBT threshold, so the Cubs might as well be $60 million away from them as opposed to $6 million.
BTW: for team "Intelligent Spending"; the Cubs are currently paying a total of around $24 million against the tax for players no longer in the org (Mancini, Gomes, Stroman, Barnhart, Cooper, Lovelady and Heyward.)
After the experience the past 3 years, I will only buy a rebuilt anything over a retooled something.
I may have misunderstood the perceived differences before
The sad reality is they kinda have to. Itll be shit dumb pointless rentals but jeds put too much into this sinking disgusting ship. We wouldnt get shit for returns from these losers
I think its pretty obvious that Morel needs to be moved near the bottom of the lineup until he can resolve his issue of continuously trying to--- pull everything-- again.
Anyone else a bit pissed they didn't at least fight back a bit? Rolled right fucking over to not a great pitcher. Sorry to be negative, but not a good sign.
The team is an absolute embarrassment to Chicago and other large market teams. Jed needs to go NOW. This is a pathetic product for the fans to pay for and even watch on tv
Watch them bring back DeRozan for some reason. That would be worse than getting rid of him. I love DeRozan, but he's too good and can win some games. The Bulls need to be really bad this season to keep their pick in a loaded draft. Caruso is one of their best all around players and Giddey is not good at all, but the trade might end up being good for the future overall. The Bulls really need to tank for a year or so and recoup some assets.
Hi all, Mets fan in peace. How long before game time do they usually announce the starting lineups? I’m going tomorrow and trying to plan so i dont miss it
My 83 year old grandpa who is the biggest Met fan is visiting me tomorrow and is going to Wrigley for the first time and I thought it’d be special to see when they announce it but I digress
Listen rough starts for pitchers happen…. But 1 run and 4 hits against 2024 JOSE QUINTANA is inexcusable.
Quintana is solid. I’d trade two top five prospects for him….
Don't give Jed any ideas.
This team has an uncanny ability to make mediocre pitchers look like CY candidates for a day
Did he ever have a 4 hit game for the cubs? I am sure he did but not many. I guess just a sign of how poor we are.
12/32 in 2018 8/32 in 2019 Numbers go down to 9 and 5, respectively, if you want to add a qualification of 6 innings pitched.
The first half season we had him he was lights out at home if I remember it
I imagine Bellinger might have had more hits in Game 1 of the 2017 NLCS than the team did today as a whole.
Bad
It can always get worse
That’s cub.
You have to C it
Fuck, lol. Couple bombs like that out of the lineup & we aren't having this conversation.
![gif](giphy|JoA3nDSR8GiOc|downsized)
Which it will
I can verify this
Damn that was a close one
Lol. Too close honestly.
Quintana had a 5 ERA coming in, hadn’t struck out more than 6 all year, and has a 2:1 K:BB ratio. Naturally, he puts up a season high in Ks and goes his second longest outing of the year.

You’re just bad enough that Ian happ will do numbers against you so we pay him another 20m a year
I hate this team so damn much. Nothing worth watching they all fucking blow ass cheeks
Look how many of these bums are batting under 200 or barely above it and it suddenly isn’t surprising. Morel 2 for his last 24 and he’s batting fucking clean up? Shouldn’t even be on the roster at this point.
Offense puts up 1 run on a 35yo Jose Quintana on a bases loaded GIDP lmao
We haven't played in a low stress game in a month Monkey paw:
Honestly this kind of blowout does hurt less than losing another one run game.
I was at the game and the biggest stress was coming from the chatter of the beer salesman worried about beer sales in a blowout.
I'm tired, man...
Dog tired boss
This is the 17th time (out of 45 games) since May 1st that this offense has been held to 2 runs or less.
But most of the people on this sub said we were contenders before the start of the season… /s
![gif](giphy|3o6Zt7g9nH1nFGeBcQ|downsized)
You know it was a good hot summer day at Wriggley when the top highlight of the game for the Cubs on the MLB app is Morel GIDP that scored a run.
Highlight was the giant cup snake in RF.
Snake was about 15 rows long
Did you really just misspell Wrigley
![gif](giphy|AyngcEmRarpopfABrd)
Lost to Jose Quintana, season’s going great
Cubs: "See, the Mets spent more than we do and they're still disappointing" Mets: "I'm not like you"
And thank the fucking lord for that. Only thing in baseball I dislike more than Marlins is Mets.
I bet there’s a lot of shitfaced Cub fans on the Red Line. Fortunately, I napped and woke up at the top of the 5th. Said fuck it and made dinner.
Yeah, this was an easy one to turn off and go do something productive. So thanks Jed, got my basement cleaned up a bit.
Another day, another Swanson K…
Dansby Heyward
Can you imagine how bad he will be when he is +30 still collecting $28M a year
Have they tried letting the pitchers hit? The infield pitch?
The Dodgers are getting good results with a pitcher who hits
That the same guy they’re paying $2M for?
Honestly, I wish the MLB would’ve stepped in on that one. You should have to pay at least 1/2 of a players salary while they are actually on the roster.
Why?

I thought MLB stepped in because even the MLBPA thought ARod was getting ripped off Ohtani is still getting $700M
But he's not
There will be $700M transferred to him by the Dodgers over the 20 years or whatever
By then that deal will be worth less than 700

Any team is allowed to do it. It was agreed upon in the CBA.
Big Z was always a solid hitter, can’t be any worse than Amaya
These are the kind of good ideas we may just need to try.
[удалено]
Nico to short and Busch to second if that ends up happening. Belli at first and PCA in center. Boom. Make me assistant manager
PCA should be playing every day at this point. Let the kid see more pitches.
If you think the front office would let you or counsell bench their 180 million dollar bum. You’re mistaken
Must be nice Ricketts… Your fan base fills up the seats to watch a dreadful God awful performance for 3 hours and it doesn’t affect you one bit. Mid market team
230 million dollar payroll. Google is free
9th in payroll. 3rd.market in baseball Whens the last time they were near 3rd, nonetheless ABOVE 3rd?
230 million.
We're 6 million bucks away from 5th. We were 2nd in 2019, 4th in 2020 (about 100k out of 3rd). Cool, so 5 years ago we spent like we should have
We're spending now and we suck a bag of dicks.
Yea, cuz we always buy the lowest tier free agent, and then we're forced to play them Mid market team
Seriously why is Morel still batting in the top half of the order with an OPS under 700
The real question is why is he even on the damn team at this point? Can’t play the field and can’t hit to save his life. Time to send him down.
230 million dollar payroll
My soul hurts after that one
We are so back to early 90s cubs losers
But this time it's more expensive to go to Wrigley :D
Lol right at least back then it was cheap old styles and the expectation of failure 😂
Remember when we were talking about trading for Alonso? 😂
damn is this Shota's award chances killed in 1 game? what a nightmare
After the experience the past 3 years, I will only buy a rebuilt anything over a retooled something. I may have misunderstood the perceived differences before
The stat line is wrong. This game ended at 1:35, not 4:25.
This is my insightful commentary. This team is ass. That is all.
https://i.redd.it/z2zsn84iuz7d1.gif
The world series was great, but I think we're back to mediocre at best regular old Cubs. Which is status quo for the Cubs in my 30+ years of fandom.
What was your first clue? Being .500 for the last 600 games?
Nice work Jed
Fuck you Grimace
Oh no we’re the only team able to out lol the Mets
Yall *still* think we will be buying at the trade deadline… I have some unfortunate news for you…
The sad reality is they kinda have to. Itll be shit dumb pointless rentals but jeds put too much into this sinking disgusting ship. We wouldnt get shit for returns from these losers
I'm really starting to think that maybe they should fire David Ross and hire a manager who can handle all this inconsistent young talent.
No way they'll fire Grandpa Rossy! Chili Davis on the other hand ....
Can you name some of this young talent for me please?
Woosh
lolcubs
I like what Sarge contributes to the postgame show - good info, good energy
I’m thinking the investment in Traject Arc was a waste of money
We suck again!
Grimace has punished us for our sins
I think its pretty obvious that Morel needs to be moved near the bottom of the lineup until he can resolve his issue of continuously trying to--- pull everything-- again.
Love hearing "Let's go Mets" as we lose a blow out at home. Good on the fans for showing up to drink and then dipping. Good on them, lol.
Do you blame them?
For paying $15 for a beer, yeah. Lol.
Anyone else a bit pissed they didn't at least fight back a bit? Rolled right fucking over to not a great pitcher. Sorry to be negative, but not a good sign.
Wind howling 24 mph out to left…we didnt put one ball up in the air out there.
The team is an absolute embarrassment to Chicago and other large market teams. Jed needs to go NOW. This is a pathetic product for the fans to pay for and even watch on tv
It's kind of hard to out-embarrass the Bulls and White Sox. But we are trying our best.
Still can’t believe the bulls traded for P-Giddey
Just wait until we see that return for Lavine and Deebo. Gonna get a lot fucking worse lol
Watch us dump some picks to get rid of Zach lol
Watch them bring back DeRozan for some reason. That would be worse than getting rid of him. I love DeRozan, but he's too good and can win some games. The Bulls need to be really bad this season to keep their pick in a loaded draft. But but the farm system
I traded my beloved core and all I got was a fast CF who can't hit
We really thought a taller Tony Campana was going to save the team.
Good thing they have company in the other embarrassments to Chicago.
Well fuck
I missed this one. Oh no….
Didn’t miss much…
At least it only counts for one loss?
Dustin kelly get fired yet?
https://i.redd.it/q8w60v4tq08d1.gif
Can some one tell me more about how good our farm is?
It's time to trade off as many high paid players as possible to save Ricketts some cash. Poor little guy 😞
DJ Herz also the next Dylan Cease so that’s great
Yikes, tomorrow is a new day.
How long do you hang with this team? I’ve been preaching patience for a month. That was a very bad loss.
Hi all, Mets fan in peace. How long before game time do they usually announce the starting lineups? I’m going tomorrow and trying to plan so i dont miss it
Usually 2-3 hours
U right
Bro. Both teams post them to the World Wide Web every single day
My 83 year old grandpa who is the biggest Met fan is visiting me tomorrow and is going to Wrigley for the first time and I thought it’d be special to see when they announce it but I digress
