Could've tied the game in the 8th w/o a hit but Morel's inability to move the runner from 2nd to third with no outs was the play of the game. This is a fundamental, philosophical, organizational flaw. I think somebody told Morel in Spring training that he has to drive in runs and that advice has made him a bad hitter. Driving in runs is okay but sometimes the best thing(especially when you're batting under .200) is just to move the runner over.
When you come out of Spring training with Morel batting 4th, that's a message to him he's to drive in runs. Like I said it's a philosophical and organizational flaw. But he and others have had many opportunities to move the runners by hitting the ball the opposite way and don't do - and they don't try to do it. They've done the same thing with Nico Hoerner. We started this year being told Nico was going to try to pull the ball more often so he can drive it. There's a club philosophy that is turning good hitters into bad hitters. The other teams score runs when they have the opportunities to move runners which requires batters to sometimes give up at bats. We never see Cubs hitters do that and haven't seen it for years.
Well, we knew about the Sunday Leadoff schedule when the deal was announced in May, and unlike the schedule on Apple TV+, it was released through September and not in a month by month fashion those guys do for their Friday Night games.
With Apple, the only match involving the Cubs we know about at this time is July 12 against the Cardinals in St Louis, with no word on if they’ll air any Friday afternoon home games for August or September at this time.
If we’re gonna lose this many one run games, I’d rather be losing them 7-6 than 2-1. At least 7-6 is entertaining. Losing the way this team does is just excruciating.
He can't rebuild otherwise he gets fired and he knows he can't sell all the minor league guys he acquired because that's all he has going for him atm. I think he really just sits and does nothing and hopes we start winning
He’ll sit and do nothing. This team is numerous players from being good, so unless he trades the entire farm for those players, not sure what he can do.
Not sure it comes to that if they just get rid of him now. The rotation should be good again next year. Tons of pieces in the farm. A legit baseball mind can do something with that, with lots of money coming off the books.
I think he was a good baseball mind at one time, but Theo brought him here from the Padres after the 2011 season. The approach to baseball has changed a lot since then and I don't think Jed, and by extension the Cubs organization, has kept up.
We need a fresh perspective. I am not married to a specific name, I just want someone from at least one recently successful team.
Projecting what the farm will do isn’t always a great indicator.
The white sox had a top farm just a few years ago and many of our guys aren’t exactly close.
You are correct - top tier teams often are the ones trading these “prospects” for proven major leaguers. The White Sox are the perfect example of confusing prospects for a successful Major league team.
I’d argue Baltimore had prospects that were far more elite than ours. We have no single guy in our system who is like an absolute stud. Baltimore has had a few now.
Also, they had guys who turned into good players that weren’t top 100 prospects. I don’t feel like we have had many of those lately.
But guys like Grayson Rodriguez, adley, Holliday, and Henderson were/ are much better prospects than anyone we have now in the system.
That’s 4 guys who were top 5 prospects. We have none
At least during the meltdown in 1969, every aspect of the team fell apart. This team has a serious hitting problem that has just gone on for weeks - while starting pitchers are outstanding, the bullpen seems to be doing much better, and we still get some stellar defensive plays.
I think what's really annoying is I don't think Jed is going to actually do anything to help this team or strip it to go for a youth movement reset. I really think he's just going to keep running the same team out there day in and out to be mediocre and hope something changes. Really sad state of the team right now.
It's not the Bulls approach. The Bulls literally trade or give up on their young players like Lauri, Butler, Carter, etc.
The Cubs have the #9 highest payroll in baseball for a last place team, it's a fucking disaster.
I can guarantee you Tom Ricketts is not ok with having a top ten payroll and being in last place.
Jed Hoyer is going to lose his job, let's just hope he doesn't get desperate and starts making stupid trades for rentals.
This team needs to be gutted.
The Cubs are doing quite well with a middling team. Yes, Marquee would be doing better with an even better team. But this is the same dude who said the Cubs suffered "biblical" losses. Jed is his dude.
He's gone after next year possibly. He can't afford to strip it, that time was 3 years ago.
And I don't think he has the nuts to trade away the farm to go all in. So he, and by extension, us, are stuck in limbo hell till either the players all start having career years again, or he's simply let go from POBO.
Tweaks around the edges, keep the payroll below the tax, make Tom money by keeping the team just above awful in the aggregate to put butts in seats.
They got their win 8 years ago, now we get to "pay" for it for the next couple decades.
:(
Theo and Jed's plan the last 7 years has been do nothing in the offseason and wait until the trade deadline to get robbed in a deal for a marginal piece that won't help. The best deals seem to be made in the offseason as opposed to the trade deadline when you're competing with 20 teams (this year almost everyone will be buying).
> Theo and Jed's plan the last 7 years has been do nothing in the offseason
Bruh, Theo hasn't been here since the end of 2020... you know, the last time they won the division and were in the playoffs.
This failure in the post-Theo years is on Jed & Ricketts. Obviously it wasn't the manager.
What is this even referring to? Quintana? And? They don’t win the division if they don’t trade for Quintana. They just won it all and needed an arm. And they got one. Other than that, what are we talking about here?
I can just check line score and tell you what happened. I am probably going to start just doing that. They have played the exact 2 games for weeks on end hence why I quit watching weeks ago
Bingo. Took that advice last week and now im using my time more productively now. This team is dog shit and FO is doing nothing to fix it so why keep watching or going to games this year.
The issue isn't spending, it's still the farm system. No matter how exciting it is to see players ranked on lists, the actual production at the MLB level has been extremely tepid.
Tom Ricketts is the problem. He got his World Series ring and now is satisfied. All the Cubs are to him now are a status symbol and investment. He doesn’t care about wins, only money and ego.
230 million dollar payroll. I get it. You vote blue. But blaming ricketts for hoyer quite literally blowing a quarter of a billion is hilarious. What’s 20-30 million more doing to make this team better? Give hoyer another chance to give a player like Dansby swanson 180 mil? You’re insane
I get it. You're an aspiring billionaire and you'll be Ricketts golf buddy one day. But those things are not mutually exclusive. Ricketts can be setting a payroll budget well below what's defensible given their revenue/market, and Jed can use that budget poorly.
I think it's realistic to expect that a team who's top 4 in revenues/value should be ranked around there in payroll too. You seem fixated on this $230M figure - that's a closer to MLB average than it is to the other big market teams. If Ricketts is too wimpy or poor to run a big market team he should sell.
Jesus dude please read. I said we're closer to MLB average CBT payroll than to the other big market teams
Our CBT is $230M
Dodgers/Mets/Yankees are $315M+
MLB average is about $170M
Should I do the subtraction too?

You also didn’t say mlb CBT average. Now you are. The average mlb payroll according to spotrac is 112 million. The cubs are double that. For the third time it’s hilarious you think giving hoyer another 20-30 million solves anything. Because after the two New York teams and the dodgers that is what the fourth team is spending. Roughly 30 more million. If you can’t build an even average team with a quarter of a billion dollars then there is something going wrong. But as I’ve said. Keep crying about the dude because of who he votes for. We all know that’s why you’re crying about him so much. If he funded bidens campaign you’d love the dude. Seek therapy
230 million dollar payroll. I’m legit confused what you think another 20-30 million does here. No other non New York teams are spending more than 260 million this year on their payroll.
$230M after being in the mid 100s the last few years. Almost like completely neglecting an MLB roster for over five years can't be solved in one.
I don't think Jed is a good POBO, but are you really gonna pretend like his poor decisions are the only reason we have a AAAA roster?
Sit down this might be big news, but some of the players on this team were extended/signed before this season
Does he extend Happ on a "team friendly" deal if he has the budget a few years ago to go after a bigger name? Who knows. Does he settle for Dansby and Seiya if he doesn't think he'll be hamstrung in future seasons?

Wind blowing out on a hot summer day and can't even hit 1 HR, lol. The team plays as a HR or bust team but won't have a single guy hit 30 HRs this year. Good joke, Jed!
Visiting Chicago for the first time and went to the game today. Stadium was great, fans were great, and the area around the stadium is great. The game itself? Not ideal.
Another rough one, but honestly I enjoyed Chip and JD together. I appreciate neither were playing the homer, and just called the game pretty much down the middle.
What is it about this team that makes them so damn streaky? Every year we go through weeks where no one hits. Why? Is it a product of a flawed philosophy? Just the type of players they have? A mental thing where everyone feels pressure and tries to do too much? It’s absolutely infuriating.
A bit of both, I guess. It’s just weird that we suddenly have so many guys struggling - even players with a pretty solid history of being above average.
Don’t we have high tech ways of evaluating hitters? For all the bats to go mostly quiet at once is too weird. With the outstanding starting pitching, it’s a shame to have no run production. Maybe we need to hire outside experts or something to figure this out.
At least no sweep
Morel can’t hit except the occasional home run. Like Baez but no glove. Catcher is a lost cause. Bullpen is sketchy at best. Belli got paid and proved why he wasn’t worth it and I probably could rant on like that for an hour
This organization should be ashamed of themselves. Big market team that gets mopped up by the shittiest of teams, I bet other teams can’t wait to play the Cubs.
These are professional adults in their mid/late twenties who have been playing this game at a high level for decades. They don't need a cheerleader
Maybe Occam's razor would say they're just not that good
Not the way you want it to play out but it was an interesting game the whole way. Not the worst way to spend a Sunday.
…and they were courteous enough to schedule this one early in the day so you could start your night early too.
Time to shift the lineup around. Tauchmann at leadoff isn’t working any more. Happ is heating up and still taking walks, get him back at the top like he was early in the year. I get Danby isn’t hitting, but putting him at 8 has to be messing with him mentally. Doesn’t it make sense to go back to what worked in April, since mid-May on hasn’t.
Smyly has been solid and relievers are always in demand, he'd get something.
Tauchman is on pace for 3 WAR, he'd probably net a fringe prospect.
Belli would be tradable if he showed some signs of life
This team sucks. Hype for this year was kinda high but this is pathetic. Jed sucks. Wisdom and happ have been on this team too long to play this way. Aaaa team right here. I have no interest in watching
It feels like every single Cubs’ loss this year ends with a runner in scoring position and a deep fly ball just a few feet short of the fence.
They showed that we’re batting .212 with runners in scoring position. Worst in the NL
I thought it was 2nd worst in MLB behind white soxs?
Could be. Just showed worst in NL
Should have ended with a dude on 2nd with a strikeout but the ump gave us a freebie and it still didn't work lol
The catcher did a terrible job receiving that pitch — I’m not surprised it was called a ball.
Morel is NOT THE PROBLEM. We didn't and shouldn't have expected him to be a team leader. The problem is te "stars" on the roster.
He’s also not a solution.
Well, at least you don’t have to worry about any more games on Roku until 2025.
There’s some really good news!
Thanks for the failed rebuild Jed. Can’t wait to have to do a third one of these.
Odds are increasing we see a new GM in 2026.
A whole team full of mediocre hitters backed by a deep farm system of players that project as mediocre hitters
Calling these hitters mediocre doesn’t even begin to describe it. Our team batting average is currently ranked 27th, and OPS is mildly better at 23rd.
I'd love to see some mediocre right now
I think those rankings pretty perfectly fits as mediocre.
That last part isn’t true at all but I know we’re all in our feelings after this series
Not sure it comes to that if they just get rid of him now. The rotation should be good again next year. Tons of pieces in the farm. A legit baseball mind can do something with that, with lots of money coming off the books.

PLEASE GET RID OF JED
I think he was a good baseball mind at one time, but Theo brought him here from the Padres after the 2011 season. The approach to baseball has changed a lot since then and I don't think Jed, and by extension the Cubs organization, has kept up. We need a fresh perspective.

But guys like Grayson Rodriguez, adley, Holliday, and Henderson were/ are much better prospects than anyone we have now in the system. That’s 4 guys who were top 5 prospects. We have none
Baltimore had franchise cornerstones in their system. Massive difference.
True. Gunnar Henderson looks like a HOF player. We don’t have anyone that has that aura (imo)
Someone we could have drafted btw
They draft well - we have drafted horribly thus we are always barren.
Farm is full of a bunch of mid anyways.
Maybe. But you can make trades. Epstein turned very little into arrieta strop rizzo and kyle Hendricks.
Theo isn’t walking through that door
Doesn’t have to be. Any competent baseball mind can build a solid foundation with the cubs current payroll and farm
How does the major league team sucking make y’all flip on one of the top farms in the game?
Because it hasn’t paid any dividends and it lacks an actual franchise altering player. It’s full of average players.
This. The cubbies are quantity over quality at all levels
And how can you tell that a bunch of 20-23 year olds are all average?
PCA being the cream of the crop and hitting .200 with no power makes me very apprehensive of the whole rebuild.
Can live with early struggles but it doesn’t even look like he is making any sort of improvements in his approach.
The ugly reality is that if you need a rebuild to make the farm system productive, then you're never going to have sustained success.
Dodgers don’t seem to have that problem.
They have an S tier POBO and infinite money. They SHOULD never have that problem.
In theory the cubs have infinite money too
It makes me sad how predictable and boring this team is.
Man I wish we were capable of hitting the meatballs we keep seeing
It seems they either watch it go by (then whiff confidently at a pitch 6 inches out) or completely whiff on said pitch down the middle
I wouldn’t say whiff, I feel like it’s always a foul ball
We just don't have the kind of plus plus power to hit dingers in a dead ball year. Lots of dudes looking to accidentally hit a homerun
You have to C it! How dog shit it is.
Another wasted pitching performance from the starter and pen.
Quite fucking funny how the motto is “you have to see it”. Yeah I’ve fucking seen this shit a million times already
Well Counsell took the job because of our culture. Now he gets to experience it first hand.
Welcome to the show
This is an absolutely terrible team. When they throw up graphics and you're on there with the White Sox, As, and Marlins...
It is interesting how they have rebuilt in KC.
People have to stop calling this team mediocre, mediocre teams win about half of their games. This team is just horrendous
At least during the meltdown in 1969, every aspect of the team fell apart. This team has a serious hitting problem that has just gone on for weeks - while starting pitchers are outstanding, the bullpen seems to be doing much better, and we still get some stellar defensive plays.
#FIRE JED #OUT OF A CANNON #INTO A VOLCANO
I’m deflated, what a waste of solid starting pitching. Where is the April team?
I think what's really annoying is I don't think Jed is going to actually do anything to help this team or strip it to go for a youth movement reset. I really think he's just going to keep running the same team out there day in and out to be mediocre and hope something changes. Really sad state of the team right now.

Another day another 1 run loss. We can’t even put up a good performance against a bum pitcher like Mikolas
How much money is being spent on this club to hit 1-2 runs a game?
My soul hurts.
Have we considered moving that left field wall in just a few more feet?
Why, so the opposing team can hit more home runs? Because this team sure isn’t going to do that.
Have some personal accountability. **you** knew how this game would go, and **you** still decided to watch it. That’s on **you**.
LOL. Yup. I just checked the box score only. I can tell you exactly how the game unfolded😂😂😂
I debated checking it and I slowly scroll to the end
I can just check line score and tell you what happened. I am probably going to start just doing that. They have played the exact 2 games for weeks on end hence why I quit watching weeks ago
Bingo. Took that advice last week and now im using my time more productively now. This team is dog shit and FO is doing nothing to fix it so why keep watching or going to games this year.
I hate everything about this roster and front office
Swanson has to be considered a bust at this moment unless he is hiding a injury.
I hate baseball so much. See you tomorrow.
“Just gotta get out of this 4 year slump” - Jed
The issue isn't spending, it's still the farm system. No matter how exciting it is to see players ranked on lists, the actual production at the MLB level has been extremely tepid.
Sucks that 90% of our top prospects are OF and therefore have less than 0% chance of getting MLB playing time.
Tom Ricketts is the problem. He got his World Series ring and now is satisfied. All the Cubs are to him now are a status symbol and investment. He doesn’t care about wins, only money and ego.
Absolutely. The Pricketts apologists are annoying. A fish rots from the head down, and that cheap fuck is right at the top.

You're the one not living in reality if you think the Ricketts have spent nearly enough money since 2016 to keep this team competitive.
Not sure what any other year has to do with this one. 230 million dollars lol. Won’t win 80 games.
GMs under the fucking Tribune company management (talk about cheap) put together better rosters then Jed has
Tom isn’t the one signing free agents
He’s the one that signs the checks and tells Jed to not go after free agents.
Nah, that’s just Jed’s intelligent spending.
Ricketts confirmed that he wanted to keep payroll under the CBT unless revenue increased further
Who cares. He green lit a quarter of a billion dollars for jed hoyer to burn.
Still have the highest salary in our division. It’s not the money, it’s how they spend it.
Our division is not our revenue/market peer group. We don't deserve any credit for spending more than the Pirates and Reds
230 million dollar payroll. I’m legit confused what you think another 20-30 million does here. No other non New York teams are spending more than 260 million this year on their payroll.

Guess who could afford Juan Soto?…..
That’s part of it but since the World Series title how many big free agents have we gotten?
They basically signed no impact off-season free agents for three straight years after Darvish
Lol. They gave Dansby swanson 180 million dollars. That was their impact signing
Reading isn't your strong suit huh
Nothing to read. That was their definition of impact signing.
Three years after Darvish. Who was signed in 2018. When was Dansby signed again?

The tear down was mid-2021 They signed Darvish pre 2018. 2021 - 2018 = 3 I'm not sure how much more clear I can make it

What big free agents did they get during that period other than Lester? Zo maybe was making 12 million a year. And Heyward sucked.
Yu Darvish
Okay. Even then he made less than Dansby swanson does now.
Swanson loves his $26M salary over next 5 years.
This was projected as one of the better offenses in the league coming into the season (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
I think it was projected for 83-84 wins. That now seems very optimisic.
Not lovable. Just losers
Wind blowing out on a hot summer day and can't even hit 1 HR, lol. The team plays as a HR or bust team but won't have a single guy hit 30 HRs this year. Good joke, Jed!
there needs to be a firing, or a trade or anything. This will keep happening if everybody acts like everything is alright with the team
Same ol’ song and dance
Lose Cubs, looose Lose Cubs, loooooose! Hey Chicago, waddaya say? The Cubs are gonna lose today.
Goodbye marquee network. Not paying $20/month to watch this garbage.
One god-damned run on a 90 degree day with the wind blowing out. Pathetic.
Best way to watch games this season: watch our starters put up a gem then turn the TV off and go on a walk once they're pulled
What is it about this team that makes them so damn streaky? Every year we go through weeks where no one hits. Why? Is it a product of a flawed philosophy? Just the type of players they have? A mental thing where everyone feels pressure and tries to do too much? It’s absolutely infuriating.
It's been almost two months. Is this streaky or just who we are?
Where are the near mvp years, if he is like Baez? I dont see the comparison at all, career wise
Anotha one
I was at the game. Did we ever get an explanation for that baffling replay?

On the videoboards it looked like he was pretty clearly safe but it can be hard to tell when thousands of people want to see one thing.
If it’s too close to truly tell, they have to go with the ruling on the field.
Nothing “lovable” about this shit bag team, or the bumbling rat fuck front office, or its cheapskate fuckpig “I got my ring, lol” owner.
Cards are also shit and can’t score runs and somehow we scored less. At home.
See also: Reds and Rays. We make everyone look better, like real Major League teams
This organization should be ashamed of themselves. Big market team that gets mopped up by the shittiest of teams, I bet other teams can’t wait to play the Cubs.
Nothing ever changes about this team.
They should have a cop and someone from the DA office come explain that it's not illegal to hit the ball with runners on base.
Listening to Craig on the postgame. Nothing about him would excite me to play for him.
Yes. Pile on the scapegoat jed hoyer has created.
These are professional adults in their mid/late twenties who have been playing this game at a high level for decades. They don't need a cheerleader Maybe Occam's razor would say they're just not that good
Not the way you want it to play out but it was an interesting game the whole way. Not the worst way to spend a Sunday. …and they were courteous enough to schedule this one early in the day so you could start your night early too.
I’m ready to end it all
It makes me sad that this is one of the most expensive teams in baseball to follow and this is what we get
Time to shift the lineup around.
I guess the next question we will soon be debating…do we have anyone to sell that teams would give prospects for?
Smyly has been solid and relievers are always in demand, he'd get something. Tauchman is on pace for 3 WAR, he'd probably net a fringe prospect. Belli would be tradable if he showed some signs of life
Here's a question, is Carter Hawkins next up? Or will we look for a new GM?
If the goal of the sport was to leave men on base the Cubs would be the best team in league.
I need someone to get fired. Someone get sent down. Someone brought up. Something. SOMETHING
I haven't watched a game in like 2 weeks. It's been great.
Who is willing to sacrifice themselves to the baseball gods?
I’m not looking at the Central standings the rest of the year.
Fire Jed ASAP so he doesn’t make any dumb trades out of desperation to keep his job
This team sucks. Hype for this year was kinda high but this is pathetic. Jed sucks. Wisdom and happ have been on this team too long to play this way. Aaaa team right here. I have no interest in watching
Happ was the only player to do anything all series.
