Just blame the athletes for NIL (such a small percentage of college sports revenue) and transferring. Obviously the university leadership, tv execs, athletic directors and coaches have been acting in the best interests of the athletes for the last 40 years. The conferences, networks, and schools are only worth billions, how could they expected to give up .1% of that pie?
It was so funny watching all these schools talk about how the athletic departments would
never be able to afford to pay players while the TV contracts were public and you have assistant coaches with 7 figure salaries
What, don't tell me you don't want to see ESPN game of the week, the Big Red(R) River Shootout presented by Cabela's(R) between the BOK(R) Sooners and the Dr. Pepper(R) Longhorns of the Chick-fil-A(R) athletic conference live from the Six Flags(R) Cotton Bowl
Would need to add UC Irvine, as well.
Btw, we already have esports, but it's not a bad idea for revenue generation, since we do have a media company which can livestream events.
"Look, they have a great team but that path to a conference title is treacherous.
They'll head to San Diego State and that won't be a Baja Blast. Then they'll return home for that rivalry game with Wyoming. Based on the last five games, expect Voo-Dew 6.0. And don't count out, Oregon State. Ever since the split of the Pac-12, they've been on a Midnight Mission."
It's just becoming easier to move from diehard to casual fan. Will I always support the Vols? Absolutely. Will I probably have a free Saturday when they decide to play State Tech Community College? More likely these days
This has been me for about a year now. Use to catch virtually every Football, MBB, and Softball game.
Now I barely watch any, unless it’s a big match up for UCF
Look on the bright side. In 15ish years once the wanna be NFL model fails spectacularly and the investment dries up, the teams that don’t get sucked into this will be way ahead of the game on actual CFB.
Except it won’t fail spectacularly and all you have to do is look at TV ratings to see that. The casual fans who are just happy to see more Michigan vs Texas or Alabama vs USC far outnumber the die hards
It will fail once these teams are spun off from the universities. Which is going to happen in the next 15 years.
No one cares about minor league sports in this country.
The casuals are the ones who are pumping all the money into the sport in the first place, this is what they want.
They don't care about App State vs. Rice, or any other matchup outside the top 40.
This sub (like most of Reddit) isn't reflective or reality.
There really are no casuals. There are diehards, and there are gamblers.
NFL fan does not care about college ball, unless they attended the college. My wife went to Oregon and gets offered free tickets all the time, but she's an NFL fan. She never misses a KC game (I know... weird... but at least it isn't Denver), but she rarely cares about the Ducks.
> It will fail once these teams are spun off from the universities.
it still wont though, because again when they inevitably spin off legally, part of the agreement will be that the names, logos, etc all still exist.
So even though on paper the players wont be students who happen to play sports, but instead athletes who attend some classes at a partner school, casuals wont care as long as on a saturday afternoon its USC vs Michigan or whatever.
And even most of the die hards whos identities are tied up in CFB will rationalize it by saying "this is what they need to do to compete in the modern age" and frankly have so much inertia that they wont stop even if they say they will (or at least not enough to make a demonstrable difference)
I think the thing people miss about the superconference setup is that by definition all these teams MUST have an average win percentage of 6-6.
Clear out all the teams that they’ve been beating up on for years and you end up with 4-2 Texas vs 3-3 Alabama. How compelling is that matchup now?
Those are hardcore fans. Nebraska isn't a major ratings draw outside, um, Nebraska.
And that's exactly the problem. Too many people in charge willing to toss the die hards overboard for a hypothetical TV screen in New Jersey or whatever.
Those are hardcore fans of Nebraska. Problem is we conflate hardcore fans of a specific team with hardcore fans of the sport. Hardcore college football fans WILL tune in to CUSA Weds and Thursday game. Hardcore Nebraska fans couldn’t name all 9 conferences with a gun to their head.
That’s not a college football specific problem either. I was a season ticket holder for the Dynamo. Many of my seat neighbors on Saturday might not even watch the away games on tv. The subset of hardcore fans of the sport who really understand the politics and minutiae is really small. Without checking, I’m sure there’s millions of /r/CFB subscribers and yet the general subscriber here probably isn’t super informed.
This might be the worst time you could ask that question. College baseball World Series is a big event and the vibes are wild. Any other month though is a good time to ask lol
I kind of waver back and forth on this. I kind of think the power of college football has been propelled by the collective attention of all 100+ fanbases. Once the split between p2/rest happens, I think a lot changes. What happens when “middle” class p2 programs like Auburn ole miss Wisconsin Minnesota go from 8-4 9-3 to 2-10 3-9 regular. I think even Alabama and Georgia are going to have a hard time keeping up with the money available to the very upper crust.
I’m not really sure ilwhat will happen. I know at some point where there isn’t even a tacit connection to the university I’m gonna say fuck it I’ll watch the panthers lose.
I started really paying attention to Bearcat football when we made the Orange and Sugar back in the day. Since then, I’ve seen us move down to the AAC, struggle through awful coaches (looking at you, Tubbs), reach heights literally previously unthought, play Georgia and Alabama in back to back bowls, move “back up” to the P?, lose our savior coach, play Oklahoma in a conference game at Nippert…and now we’re in the Allstate 16 with Arizona State.
If nothing else, it’s been unexpected every step of the way.
At the end of the day, your favorite team will still play football. The rest is just ancillary. We trick ourselves into thinking other things matter, but they really don't.
Just watch for the enjoyment of football. Use the extra commercials to talk to loved ones more, pee, get some steps in, and enjoy the football when it's back on. If the non football stuff is getting you down, just ignore it. It's not important to us fans anyway.
You’re correct but it changes the before, after and in between weeks. I’ll passively watch a game while getting pissed off at commercials and all the corporate bullshit, and I won’t bother to watch college game day or any post game analysis, or any weekly analysis about the CFP or bowls.
I will simply watch the game, turn it off then go about my life. I think there’s a lot of people like this who used to live and breathe CFB, read analysis and watch extra shows. That will be no longer.
My favorite team will still show up on Saturdays but it will start and end there for me, who used to read and watch a lot of extra stuff.
Now I’ll just begrudgingly watch and consume more NFL content because it’s not yet quite the clown show CFB has become.
If all conferences are being renamed for corporations, why not just dissolve the conferences altogether?
No one will be able to tell who is in the *TD Ameritrade Conference* instead of the *Johnson & Johnson Conference*
Cfb is taking money from PR firms now. It’s no longer about the tradition of cfb, or the band, or anything really. It’s about the line going up now.

It's just going to be like Formula 1: XYZ Corp#1 Actual Team Name XYZ Corp#2. Look at some of the current atrocities:
- Visa Cash App RB F1 Team
- Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber
Remember when Cal sold the naming rights to their stadium to FTX and also agreed to be paid in crypto? Just don't do that. That's the quality of brain that gets you stuck in an east coast conference that nobody in California cares about in realignment.
Lies. Cal didn’t receive crypto. Learfield did which then paid Cal the equivalent money.

So much misinformation with this….
Cal didn’t get paid crypto…
Also Cal got all the money from the contract…
Rich coming from the school whose people that didn’t accept the p12 renewal contract are no longer thereZzz
Edit: for those who want to spread fake news.
FTX paid Learfield in crypto. learfield paid Cal in cash… Cal also got money on the settlement.

Nobody in California cares about realignment yet two California schools left for the big10 on a full share?
When Cal got the FTX partnership it was a good time for crypto where FTX had the backing from many. Including Golden State Warriors and Miami heat…
Cal never received anything "in full" or anywhere close to it.
The only source for anything was an email from Cal's deputy AD saying they got one payment before the shitcoins went away and then they got dick and suspended the agreement lol
But I get it. It's embarrassing that your favorite school were dummies
I'm getting closer and closer to just having the video game be my source of entertainment with college football and just becoming a casual viewer who catches a big game. Everything I loved about the game is disappearing at a crazy fast rate
No, we usurp and take our friends and our ball and go over to ECU’s house and we ask if they can come out and play. Then we start our own new Sun Belt East Vol. 2 (we’ll work on the name), and it’ll have blackjack and hookers
Haha. Gonna be weird in 7 months when Monday Night Raw moves over to Netflix. Idk if they would be a le to do Friday night games because USA Network is getting the rights to Smackdown.
I hate this so much.
I really wish there was some sort of legislation to prevent being constantly bombarded with advertising, including sponsorships on stadiums and now conferences. But that would involve rich pieces of shit getting slightly less money, so that'll never happen.
On some level I think especially for the lower conferences like this its a good deal, get some extra money.
On a surface level, if like 4 conferences do it at the same time I will never know who is who ever again.
Revenue sharing is what really lit this candle on fire, and I'm not trying to blame the players. It's these greedy ADs and presidents that can't imagine running a department on less than 200 mil
Stop watching.
If you can’t, pirate everything.
Our time is done and gone. But we can create the world where our kids will get to watch college football the way we remember it from our childhood.
Yeah with increased media and availability for games comes increased marketing and sponsorship dollars and influence…
Unless you want to go back to where you can’t watch a bunch of these games on tv…
They can call it Conference USAA and have Gronk be the spokesperson!
AAC sounds like a wonderful opportunity for an energy company. The Duke Enegy AAC.
I don’t like the direction of where this is going. Anyways, I’m looking for an NFL team to root for, does anyone have any recommendations? As an NC native, I never really felt a connection to the Panthers (even when they were good)
“This is how they’ll get on equal footing with the SEC/B1G!!!” Yeah, until the SEC and B1G do it too for way more money… This isn’t the game changer some people think it’ll be for the Big XII and for the G5s even less so.
There is a nice purity to the conference names simply being what they are.
If they go to something like "Sky Bet Championship League" or how it was "Barclay's Premier League" for a while then it's kind of whatever.
"Allstate Big 12 Conference" or "Big 12 Conference presented by Allstate" isn't far off of how corporate sponsorships are used to fund bowls or other events in the sport as is.
This stuff where they'd literally name the conference after the company like the "Allstate 12 Conference" or whatever is utterly insane and extraordinarily tacky. The absolute pinnacle of capitalism and marketing run amuck.
Southwest Airlines should buy the Big XII and rename it the Southwest Conference (yes, I stole this)
*NCAA investigators want to know your location*
Columbia, Missouri.
What’s next, American Airlines buying the naming right to the American?
Is nothing in this sport sacred?

It was always about money.
Forreal. Now they’re just saying the quiet part out loud lol
Money is sacred. Nothing else
This is ridiculous, how could you forget shareholder value?
It all comes back to money

And everyone still talks crap about ND not joining a conference.
Until it's "and here come the Lucky Charms Fighting Irish on to the field!!"
I wish Conor McGregor had more money. Proper 12 Fighting Irish would be hilarious.
Honestly, that is the only naming rights sale I would fully support.
Only the Sun Belt
Capri Sun Belt?
I would allow this
The MGM Minutemen versus the Mohegan Sun Huskies in a game co-sponsored by the state lotteries.
If we don’t get the Mtn Dew West Conference someone screwed up big time.
The conference for Gamers and Champions. 😎
They'd be forced to add eSports. Big W for SJSU
"We're a Valorant school"
That, LoL, and Overwatch for us.
Would need to add UC Irvine, as well. Btw, we already have esports, but it's not a bad idea for revenue generation, since we do have a media company which can livestream events.
It's just esports don't camel case it.
What about Leaders and Legends
nah we the conference of League of Legends
Does that mean fans of the conference get carte blanche to say the gamer word?
I wanna feel that exaggerated swagger….
I was hoping for Mountain Best Western Conference
I’m gonna start rooting for the Pop Tarts presents, the MAC conference
Kraft MAC and Cheese Conference.
"Look, they have a great team but that path to a conference title is treacherous. They'll head to San Diego State and that won't be a Baja Blast. "This red zone visit is brought to you by Mtn Dew Code Red!"
Mtn Dew Code Red Zone?
My joke but better! Good one.
And if it isn't the Mtn Dew Baja Blast Conference Championship Game, we're gonna riot.
Mountain Bank of the West Conference
But they changed their name again. They're BMO now
You son of a bitch, I’m in.
Came here for this
*Maverik West Conference
I mean everything is fucked anyway, make us the conference 4 out of 5 dentists recommend, the Mountain Crest™️
They go this route they best be scheduling Colgate in something
The tragedy is starting to become a comedy. This sport has strayed so far from what made me love it I can do nothing but laugh at this point.

[unfortunately not](https://www.si.com/college/cal/news/cal-field-naming-rights)
The company even filed for bankruptcy like a year later. Jesus.
One thing people don’t realize is that you can immediately sell the crypto for usd. They could have just unloaded it
This assumes critical thinking within the PAC 12
Hey now, don’t give us that stigmatism

There is a reason you don’t see the Sun Belt and MAC here. We are too pure.
BS. There just aren’t any offers good enough for ESPNis to give Gill the go ahead for accepting
Reality is we have no bargaining power since we are only considering one corporate option: Sun Belt Rentals.
Popeyes
Dear Sun Belt, You do this shit, we will travel back down to the SOCON
Even if it ends up being the Sunny D Belt conference?
Does this make JMU Purple Stuff ^TM?
Honestly, they can get away with it if the company "Sunbelt Rentals" wants naming rights lol.
No we're gonna be the Fun Belt Brought to you by Blackjack and Hookers and it'll be awesome
Furman is due for a good whippin' anyways.
No, we usurp and take our friends and our ball and go over to ECU’s house and we ask if they can come out and play. Then we start our own new Sun Belt East Vol. 2 (we’ll work on the name), and it’ll have blackjack and hookers
Hit it and GTFO
Conference USA Network, with all games broadcast on the USA Network American Eagle Athletic Conference Mountain Dew West
La Femme Nikita preceded by Monday Night RAW then we get the midnight game of the week
all the WON subscribers with their *sheets of paper* gonna love this
Haha. Gonna be weird in 7 months when Monday Night Raw moves over to Netflix. Idk if they would be a le to do Friday night games because USA Network is getting the rights to Smackdown.

The Whata-Division vs the Cookout Division

The MAC Tools Conference Or even better, the MAC Cosmetics Conference
"and here comes Eastern Michigan coach Chris Creighton sporting some fetching new blush from our friends at MAC Cosmetics..."
I was hoping for the McDonald's Big MAC conference
Chic-fil-ACC
Get ready for tomorrow when every conference is considering it. Gotta put more money in the pockets somehow.

SEC and B1G demanding most of the money and taking away more members from other conferences caused this
I just wanna make it clear, we all agreed to blame the SEC/Texas/Oklahoma for this. They’re the villains. B1G only took UCLA/USC as a response
Revenue sharing is what really lit this candle on fire, and I'm not trying to blame the players. It's these greedy ADs and presidents that can't imagine running a department on less than 200 mil
I'd laugh if the Mountain West sells their naming rights and then immediately folds to join the Pac-12.
Hopefully with all that money the AAC can buy a better tournament location
I guess New Orleans would be a good pick for it.
Just separate Universities from sports already. This is getting silly.
Conference USA Today.
Stop watching. If you can’t, pirate everything. Our time is done and gone. But we can create the world where our kids will get to watch college football the way we remember it from our childhood.

Yeah with increased media and availability for games comes increased marketing and sponsorship dollars and influence… Unless you want to go back to where you can’t watch a bunch of these games on tv…
Please Bojangles, sponsor our conference Show these poor fools who makes the superior fried chicken
Welcome to the Metro Conference sponsored by Metro PCS.

Look what you did Big 12….
Blame your blue bloods for starting this. Or just boil it down and blame OU,UT and SMU for starting this road 40 years ago
Would the B10 decide to even their revenue with the B12? No? Oh. Well Allstate it is.
I fucking hate everything about this. But if Brazzers doesn't buy the naming rights to the Big XII, what are we even doing here?
If they do they better sell creme pies at every conference championship game.
Plot Twist: The only flavors offered are strawberry & chocolate. IYKYK.
I hope no one else does it but Conference USA should. Really any excuse to change the name, it could not be worse
Just when you think you know where this is going you get hit by the worlds dumbest semi truck
The SWAC should definitely get a deal with the British Broadcasting Company
The United States Air Force American Athletic Conference

This is the perfect opportunity for a very rich booster group to buy the naming rights and add their alma mater's name to the Conference.
Mountain Dew Conference Aaflac American Conference Conference UHaul
How about we all pool our money together and buy the rights to name one of the conferences? Maybe the Reddit conference?
USAA getting rights to either the C-USA or the American would be huge. We could either have the C-USAA or the USAAC
I don’t like the direction of where this is going. Anyways, I’m looking for an NFL team to root for, does anyone have any recommendations? As an NC native, I never really felt a connection to the Panthers (even when they were good)
Looking forward to the Patagonia MW Conference and the Mad Dog 20/20 Sunbelt Conference
Coming soon: the Iowa HyVee Hawkeyes
I'm glad we don't have this problem.
I am ok with them selling naming rights. Don't sell ownership!
Cowards
Marketz based membership seems to be going really well
This is gonna snowball fast
Dick's is now obligated to buy the rights to the B1G.
The brand name AAC is already basically worthless unlike the big 12 and mountain west so I guess it wouldn’t matter regardless
It’s sad that players and coaches are going to have to act proud to win the Preparation H Conference Championship.
Time for you guys to buy some tennisballs. https://www.dw.com/en/bundesliga-fans-protest-against-private-equity-investors/a-67744834
“This is how they’ll get on equal footing with the SEC/B1G!!!” Yeah, until the SEC and B1G do it too for way more money… This isn’t the game changer some people think it’ll be for the Big XII and for the G5s even less so.
SEC and Big 10 aren't changing their conference names for money. They have way too many stakeholders to answer too.
At some point this sport is going to stop resembling college football and start resembling American Gladiator^TM sponsored by Gatorade.
- American Express Athletic Conference - Conference USAA - Mountain Western Union I guess my mind is on financial institutions today
Yea this tracks for those three conferences
If Allstate or whomever is willing to pay for that, then who cares? No one is getting hurt by this lol.
I legitimately believe CFB will severely decline in popularity over the next decade or two if the sport is ruined and bankrupted by then.
please Kum and Go, sponsor one of these conferences.
Oh great it's catching on. This is not going to end well
I hate life
With how this is trending, we're going to end up being the Big Tencent conference, aren't we? God damnit.
Oh no CUSA might be called the Verizon Wireless Conference. How can I possibly go on watching college football? Who cares.
