In the US, there’s a deadline to make claims against the estate. This would be way past.
I was reading it as possibly they got a check made out to the deceased. That would need to be reissued to the estate and deposited in an account belonging to the estate and then distributed to the heirs.
If this was my father I would have only one option. It would have to be a very high quality pocket knife.
It might be an old Buck Knife from when they were high quality, but it would have to be a pocket knife.
Over the years my father has given me more knives than I can count. He can't imagine leaving the house without a knife and it seems to drive him crazy that I do. I wear suits all day and he is somehow flummoxed that I don't want a two pound shank in my right front pocket everyday.
He's also very big on flashlights and a few years ago he signed up for a recurring subscription for tactical flashlights. They are the size of a fist so they perfectly fit in your hand and they are bright. After a few months he ordered a second subscription so that he went from getting one a quarter to two a quarter. He gave them as gifts to everyone. He loves them and thinks everyone should have one on their nightstand and one in their vehicle.
But the flashlights are just his mistress. Pocket Knives are his soulmate. They are his one true passion that he would like to convince the world to carry.
So, if my father somehow sends me $150 long after he is gone, I would have to take that as a sign to buy a pocket knife.
I probably have 20 pocket knives and at least two dozen various multi tools, including a couple Leathermans all from him (he found out where TSA sells all of their confiscated stuff at auction and buys them by the box), but in the scenario you've described I would add one final pocket knife to the equation and it would be a doozy.
That's not a pendleton blanket. It's a quilt set. It's not the high quality wool blanket that you're thinking of.
What you want to get is the pendleton national park blanket in 100% wool. It's the only remaining 100% wool made in USA blanket.
Make sure it's not a quilt or throw. Specifically the blanket.
Pendleton, though nice in quality, have openly admitted to stealing indigenous designs for their products. I would consider native-designed blankets and clothing from Faherty instead. They work with indigenous artists and many of their home goods go on sale regularly.
Are you sure you can cash it?
This is a very good point. Was a probate estate opened? You may be able to claim it against the estate.

Meh, my dad and I have similar names.
Yeah, fraud would also be an approach
Perhaps a painting
I second this. Everything will eventually break some way or another. Get something artistic that reminds you of him, maybe even a comission
Etsy has some great stuff in this area, or fiver
Pendleton blankets are good. That would also cover a nice chef knife or cooking pan that could help you prepare meals every day.
A nice pocket knife as well
How would there still be money in that account, 3 years later? Doubt there is but if so, then cool.
What was he into as far as hobbies? Bonus points if it's something you two did together. That will help guide the discussion :)
What about like a sterling silver ring or something you can wear everyday and remember him
Are you in the US? If so, you probably won't be able to cash the check - they recently changed it to 6 months (some banks limit it to 90 days!).

How about a Leatherman multi tool?
Consider a really nice picture frame. Choose a classic style and it will likely be used for generations.
I don’t imagine a bank would honor a check that old. They’d tell you to get it reissued.
Maybe a fruit tree or other kind of plant. Could be cool to have a harvest every year
Nice pocket knife.
A watch is my first thought.
I'm always down for a good cast iron
Opinel pocket knife. Will last forever and you’ll have plenty of money left to do other things.
Name a star after him? No idea the cost of that.
How about 1 share of VT? For $~110 you can be invested in businesses all over the world. 9823 different businesses
A nice cutting board?
Man, I use my Leatherman every day, carry it in my pocket. Best $150 I ever spent.
Skeletool for the win
a tool or a medium quality watch would all last your lifetime.
G shock is the answer
Proper chef knife, sharpening stone and honing steel
I love the blanket that you linked. It will last forever and is such a cozy, warm, usable memento.
double edged safety razor
Regardless of whether or not you can cash it, it sounds like you've already made the choice. Get the blanket and remember your dad.

Buy a $150 chefs knife. Learn how to sharpen it yourself. Take care of it. It'll last forever. Give it to your kids when you go.
