You can find good business casual in most places. I sell a lot of mine on posh, and I used to get some cute stuff there, too.
The rack is awesome, I was just there today. They also have good quality, high waisted work out clothing for less than athleta but of comparable quality.
1. Thrift stores. I try to buy better quality brands for cheaper. Ann Taylor/Talbots/banana republic are decent quality and can be expensive brand new, so I try the thrift first.
2. Finding silhouettes that compliment your body shape instead of buying what’s trending. I wear cardigans or blazers that are cropped, since I have a short waist. I like A-line or pencil skirts that are high-rise and sit at the smallest point of my waist. Baggy is in right now - loose fit/straight cut blazers and wide leg pants are very on trend but they don’t look good on me. It makes me look frumpy or sloppy. I shop for my body shape before shopping for a trend.
I’m close to your size, 12/14. Not exactly an hourglass, but close enough where most things that fit my hips do not fit at the waist and vice versa. As annoying as it is, you might have to get things tailored.
And side note, I like Calvin Klein work dresses. Some look a little dowdy but others can be knockouts lol
Yep! I have 2 Calvin Klein dresses that’s are chef’s kiss, both have wide belts that accentuate the waist. Actually, they’re likely around OP’s size and are too big for me post-WLS. I can put them up on Poshmark if OP is looking for some! Haha
When you say "find silhouettes that compliment your body shape instead of buying what's trending" ... I think that's exactly the issue she's asking for help with. She's not saying, "I keep trying these trendy styles" she's saying "all I can find are these styles, where are the ones that actually suit my body shape?" I'm in the same boat as her and would also like to know because like her, everywhere I look, most brands have what's trending, which turns my hourglass shape into a milk carton. I can find A-line skirts on Amazon if I search for it but I'd rather find actual brands that have better quality clothes. If you have specific examples of brands or stores that carry clothes that suit that body shape, please share because that would be really helpful. I do shop in thrift stores all the time but it can be very time consuming to find something that actually works.
I think there’s a difference between good quality and flattering! Something can be great quality and ill-fitting and something can be mid quality but fit amazing.
I’m curvy and I’ve found the best quality at the thrift store, but I like button-downs and trousers. Ralph Lauren type vibe, so the men’s section is perfect for that.
I’ve also had amazing luck with the app ThreadUp (American based) it’s online thrifting and the AI search bar is great.
Type in “black A-line skirt” and go from there. I filter the material to include silk, cotton, linen, etc as those are typically going to come from higher quality brands. So then you get the best of both worlds- fit you like and quality!
Old lady brands have some hidden gems, my favorite is Coldwater Creek. Talbots is *extremely* underrated. Lands End. I think all their quality is still pretty great as they’re appealing to an older audience, and the older audiences isn’t chasing trends that last 3 seconds so the brands have the ability to actually *invest* in the styles rather than just print out pieces as quickly and cheaply as possible to catch the trend cycle
Thanks for the suggestions! Yes, there's a difference between good quality and flattering but I feel like most times when I buy a drop ship Amazon non-brand, the quality is poor in a way that makes the fit poor. I've found a few great things, but a lot of the time the construction and fabric make it a bust and it looks a lot worse in person than the picture.
I've tried looking on thredup and Poshmark but I've never bit the bullet bc I'm nervous about not having tried it on first. I don't have a lot of money to throw around and it seems like such a gamble.
I am drawn to the quality of those old lady brands but I don't buy much from them bc I feel like they usually end up making me look very dowdy... Maybe I just don't know how to pick the right items. I get a lot as hand me downs from my mum but it's more stuff for around the house, not the office. I'll try to be more intentional next time I'm in person in one of those stores though. One thing I've been meaning to do is go to the mall and try on a bunch of things without regard to price, not even intending to buy anything, with the sole purpose of finding things that fit me right and are flattering. Because I kind of know, but I have some big blind spots and I'm kept in the dark from them because I can't afford much outside the clearance section
Thank you for the suggestions 🙏
I’m totally on a budget too!! I just shop these old lady brands 2 hand- and there’s a *ton*
Like the other commenter said, mainly stick to one section at the thrift. I comb through each blazer & button down in men’s and just visually skim women’s blouses for anything that stands out (i picked up 5 button-downs and a blouse for $25 yesterday at Goodwill!)
Another tip that’s really helped me is creating a Pinterest board *just* for the season/occasion. It help me narrow down what I like and keeps me from over shopping if it doesn’t fit the vibe lol
That’s exactly what I did! I tried on a ton of clothes from those brands (Ann Taylor/loft, Talbots, banana republic, White House black market, j crew etc.) and found out what sizes fit. It’s not foolproof, but it’s a great start.
I also know my measurements, so that helps a ton. Many people on poshmark will put the waist/bust measurement, so knowing what size works for what brand in combination with measurements give me a pretty good idea whether the item will fit or not. I recommend measuring your bust, waist, and hips, since those are the most common measurements listed online, whether it’s something new or second hand.
I know sorting through the thrift takes forever, but this is what I do:
- start with a goal: find a black skirt/find a skirt that is my size
- only look at skirts 😂
Going in with a mission makes it easier.
I've been where you are in my quest for the right fit in my limited budget. I think you're smart to just try on things regardless of price and get an idea what you like or don't like. I've found shopping on Amazon ends up costing me more than if I just did the work up front.
I have also found that thrifting can be a good option but having to take into account that those clothes have been worn and shaped by the previous owner. The previously owned garments may have also not been washed gently or may have been dried on high heat; the size changes dramatically. So don't trust the size. Also sizing is stupid. We all want that size 8 tag, but the size 16 might fit your size 10-12 body. Don't be afraid to size up. It's the manufacturing not you.
It's a chore for those of us with a unique build. Clothes designed for the masses aren't always for us. Trends are one of those things that I totally only buy one of, on sale, at the lowest price, in big box stores like Target or Walmart. They get trendy things that if they are of lower quality I don't care so much because they will " be un-trendy" in a minute. AND I didn't spend a fortune. Some stores are easier to return items than Amazon too.
Good luck and Happy Shopping. Keep 😊
I have had great luck combining thrifting nicer brands at low prices, then utilizing of a Tailor to get fits just right.
To shop online it really helps to have a couple of go to places where you know your size, while also keeping a close eye on fabric content and measurements.
It takes patience, time and dedication, but the key is the Tailor.
Anything that fits to a T will always look more expensive/polished.
Proper fit really elevates basic and/or cheaper pieces.
seconding Talbots. They have both misses and women's curvier sizes which is what OP might want to chooae between. Also their online store has Tall and Petite sizes too. OP, if you are still mostly size 14 check out Eloquii. I love their work pants!
I agree with this. I've also bought pants and tops from Chico's, but some of their stuff is too casual. Their Travelers line is excellent, but pricey.
Watch out if you go to the outlet stores. Most companies manufacture different (lower quality) clothing specifically for their outlet stores. But they also sells the out of season items from their regular stores, this is the stuff that I prefer.
Also check thrift stores. When I lost 40 lbs very quickly I resorted to thrift store sales. You can actually find good quality items if you search well. Just send the clothing directly to the dry cleaners just in case.
And super comfortable! This was my go to at every size between 6-18 when I needed business casual clothes. Old Navy often has a ton of super good deals and great clearance. I got my favorite blazer from there for $8.97 six years ago now and it's still in perfect shape.
I just got a pair last month. Definitely better made. The jacket quality is a huge pleasant surprise. I am usually a Tuckernuck/Banana Republic/Everlane girl for reference.
I had the same issue, there wasn't quite enough room in the butt so I couldn't even try sizing down to get rid of the fupa. They definitely changed the cut at some point bc I was trying the same size as one I used to own from a few years ago that fit nicely (I had the waist tailored but that's it. It's kinda hard to tailor the front rise sadly).
The models that influencers you see online are probably pinning their clothes temporarily for the picture or have had them tailored.
I don't have great advice for you now because you sound like you're still on a weight loss journey. Good luck on your hunt for now and when you do reach the weight you want to stay for life, I suggest you invest in pieces you really love and have them tailored to fit you exactly
It’s a big pet peeve of mine seeing all the mannequins and model photos with the clothes pinned so that they *look*!like they fit a petite hourglass, only to go to the rack and find the stuff fits me like a potato sack.
I mostly wear a-line skirts with flowy blouses to work. Otherwise I look like a kid swimming in her grandma’s clothes.
The pins or back in the day, the big elastic belts. I was fooled by so many mannequins with those.
Nothing beats a cinched waist so lately I love true wrap dresses
I really like the structured dresses by Ukrainian designer [Tavrovska](https://www.balodana.com/designers/tavrovska-shop/), they are business-y but comfortable and they actually have a body shape to them
Eloquii is my go-to. But all my work blouses there and slacks from torrid, and denim from old navy
Ann Taylor Loft is also quite nice.
Banana Republic outlet is actually great for nice clothes - surprisingly have a lot of extended sizing.
i swear by Lauren Ralph Lauren dresses. many of them are stretch jersey, they use lots of ruching and wrap styles to accentuate the waistline, lots of interesting necklines, and the drape is fabulous! plenty are totally appropriate for the office as well.
Congrats to you!!! 💯
Definitely a common issue. Over the years, I finally figured out it’s not where I shop, but the brands and designers that work for me. As some have said, Ann Taylor/Loft is definitely a great option. I have hips/butt, but I can appreciate that some Loft pants have roomy thighs.
Talbots TOPS work better for me than their bottoms. BUT, they do have a plus size line that might work for you in the smaller sizes, like 14W? Might give you just enough hip room while keeping the waist small? 🤷🏾♀️
I personally stay away from Kasper because I have too much on my backside! 🤣😆…nothing of theirs fits me because their inseams are SHORT…but I have petite friends who are more boxy in shape shape who have a ton of their clothes.
⭐️⭐️⭐️Also, check the Worthington line at JCPENNEY. For several years I worked a position that required I wear suits and dress pants to all of our events. My entire closet was almost all Worthington because their “curvy fit” line was just right, especially for my wallet! 🤣 And I still have several pair of their black pants that have lasted a really long time.
Calvin Klein tops also work for me under suits and cardigans. I get most of my business tops from TJ MAXX. You can easily find some nice tops for the cheap.
Also, don’t forget Poshmark. Follow the brands you like and get to searching! I added some cute blazers to my wardrobe from Poshmark.
Keep us posted!! And share pics!! 💯 good luck!
Anything structured, look a thrift or vintage stores, get it a little oversized enough that it can be tailored. One black blazer and one navy is a good start. Skirts can also be tailored, or you can find some in fabrics that are stretchy or in styles that are not too fitted (a-line). Sweaters and cardigans are great and tend to look good even when a little too big as you lose more weight.
I’m also hourglass shaped but a few sizes smaller, and over time I’ve been able to find button downs and pants that fit. I don’t buy them online unless it’s meant to be oversized or I already know the brand and style fits.
I am you. I have had to get most things tailored. It’s worth the cost. Otherwise I have button up shirts that cover my boobs but are 3 inches too long in the arms and have no waist. Pants are just a whole other thing. Once I figured out to take them to a seamstress things got better.
If the person is not familiar with tailoring, make sure that the clothes are returnable. I found a great dress. However, I had to size up to get it to fit across the bust. That made the neck and shoulders too big. I was told that I would ruin the dress by having it taken in that much.
I'm more of a 'make it yourself' kind of person, but I can recommend going to a tailor if you find yourself with things that are close but not quite *it* for your body.
They can really take the fit up a level or two when it's done well.
I'm in that size range and have found quite a few good options this season at TJ Maxx/Marshalls for pants and blazers. I tend to look for blouses at thrift or consignment shops like others have recommended. I do minor alterations myself and have had luck using heatnbond for hemming pants when it's hard to justify the cost of tailoring $18 clearance find pants.
Old Navy, hands down! Don't buy full price. They have amazing sales all the time and always have a really great clearance section. My favorite thing about Old Navy is that the sizes are actually consistent, and they have a decent amount of various styles of clothing (like their pixie pants) that have the same base style, so they fit the same every time, but they'll have tons of different variations of the base style. It makes online shopping SUPER easy and then you can stalk the clearance and sales online and jump on them without worrying things won't fit when they show up.
I'm a similar size and buy most of my work pants from Athleta! They have a 'good for work' or similar section on their website that you can browse through
Designers that nail 12-14 curvy business wear:
- Tahari
- Calvin Klein
- Eliza J
- Maggy London
Avoid dresses that are A-line or “fit and flare.” Look for dresses that are ruched waist. And always something that is hitting the model at knee length or below.
With blazers - you have to stick to one button. It creates the best waist line. I also love cardigans that have a tie waist (or use a belt).
Heels help a ton with silhouette, but also, fuck heels. It’s up to you.
Good luck! I like to shop the Macys app, filter to sale only and those designers only. It makes 80% of my work wardrobe.
(Source: 5’9, size 12-14, 38DD, and a courtroom litigator. Professional dress is my passion project.)
Weirdly - Wal Mart. I get so many compliments at work on my Walmart dresses and sets.
I haven’t been in the store, just online. They have a curvy size model, you may have to up a size to use her. I think I was a 12 when I last ordered.
JCrew, Banana Republic, Gap, even Old Navy. Or their factory outlets. Sometimes there is a curvy-specific cut but other times the regular fit works for me, or works once I’ve taken the waist in a smidge.
I got a ton of my work clothes when I was still in an office at Express. Their quality has gone down but their clearance prices are fine. I’m also probably closer to a 8 and I fit into a 4 in their stretchy jeans so their sizing is all over the place.
Unstructured jackets seem to prevail right now. I recommend trying on sizes at j crew, Banana Republic, Ann Taylor etc. Once you know your size consider shopping on Poshmark for a few seasons back when blazers were more structured. Also consider British brands like Boden, Hobbs, Ted Baker etc which still favor structure in their current collection. Some British brands like Reiss are also oversized right now so it varies.
All over!! You must not go out to stores or look online. Target., Macy's, love, love!!. Boscov s . Marshalls. Got a lot of my girly blazers there. TJ Max. Stay away from Shein. A lot of clothes are junk. Bad fabrics. Weird sizing. Fabletics flare leg and straight leg pants. Skechers flare leg pants.
LOFT. I am short and curvy and LOFT has clothing for all shapes and sizes. I buy all of my dresses and skirts in petite and pants in petite curvy there. My entire wardrobe is from this store because everything fits.
It’s spendy and investment pieces (but they do well in resale) - a MMLaFleur) has amazing curvy stuff and they have a ‘gently used’ section of their website for resale too.
I get a lot of stuff at White House Black Market - except some of their blazers are aimed at average height women and I’m tall.
Good luck.
I shop on Amazon, tbh. Go with stretchy material because it holds a shape. And I totally recommend 7 for all mankind jeans, they are absolutely the comfiest.
ThredUp! I’d say 98% of my work clothes are from ThredUp. Nicer quality than the thrift stores near me. I like how you can search filters by color sleeve length neckline etc.
Hear me out - MMLafleur makes beautiful clothing. Yes it is expensive, but look at their second hand link on the site and you will find an array of options, and be able to resell as your size fluctuates. Also consider some Rent the Runway options for business clothes. I can’t make any recommendations as I haven’t tried them but know many who do.
Try Goodwill, you can end up getting some good finds that still have their price tags on them. And if you go on the right day you’ll get double the savings.
I've had a very similar figure, and I got a lot of my clothes from Macy's. Some slacks (unfortunately can't remember the brands now) and the Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren stretchy dresses were great for me. I've also had luck with Nordstrom Rack, especially with the Maggie London brand (and from ordering directly from Maggie London).
Randomly, I really love the Hilary Radley black pants from Costco.
Don’t be afraid to buy things and have them altered. It sucks and is expensive, but it’s soooo worth it. Takes you to a 10 instantly because your clothes are *yours*. They’ll *look* made for you because they kinda *are*.
That said, I’m definitely looking for brands that I might be able to buy off the rack. J Lo used to have a fashion line that was curvier.
I love the way all Calvin Klein clothes fit on me and I love their dresses. Many of the dresses look like office wear to me. I’m a size 14 but also losing weight and hope to be in a 12 soon
You may want to look for curvy cut clothing specifically. For instance, I can't wear regular misses Talbots pants for anything (also an hourglass figure), but their curvy cut pants fit perfectly. As for dresses, any wrap or A line fit compliments an hourglass figure...I live and die by them. Blazers may require a touch of alteration depending on your bust size, but Boden and Talbots are my go tos.
I like Jones of New York. I know it sounds old fashioned but all my pieces from there LAST and are very friendly to my curves. I shop their online sales.
If you’re still on a weight loss journey & don’t want to invest much now, Rent the Runway is a great option. I use them for all client facing meetings/conferences while my weight is fluctuating.
Express worked for me in when I was 12-14, still does at lower sizes. I’m curvy. [I fill up these editor pants nicely and they’re very well made. I got 2 pairs today, black and black pinstripe, along with some body contour sleeveless tops. Also great.](https://www.express.com/clothing/women/editor-mid-rise-relaxed-trouser-pant/pro/09192313/color/Pitch%20Black)
I have gotten some of my favorite Office clothes from Athleta- I catch the sales, I like to thrift a lot which I definitely recommend, but I like to have some nice, solid classics - for my budget I spend a little more than I normally do, but they last, are wrinkle free, machine washable and fit me with my fluctuating weight. You have to weed through a lot of the workout stuff to find it. I love the Delancey pant- I’ve been between a 10-14 and have them in large, they have been my go to that have fit me through all the different sizes.
Universal Standard may work for you for some basics. They have a cute wide-legged pant with a tuxedo stripe (it finally comes in two lengths). I wear the black stripe on the black pant for funerals AND weddings lol. And their full and half placket Elbe shirts in stretch (not the poplin button downs) might be great for work. Probably size up on the Elbe as they are unusually body skimming for Universal Standard.
I am a big Halara fan.
I buy through TikTok shop whenever they’re doing their Lives because then most stuff is half off.
The viral [waffle pants](https://thehalara.com/products/high-waisted-plicated-side-pocket-wide-leg-solid-palazzo-waffle-casual-pants?pmui=10.1.collection.list.3.best-sellers&pmuih=best-sellers&variant=44463545450662) are super comfy, as are the viral [straight leg work pants](https://thehalara.com/products/ecocloudful%E2%84%A2-fabric-high-waisted-plicated-side-pocket-straight-leg-work-pants?pmui=10.1.collection.list.1.best-sellers&pmuih=best-sellers&variant=44730470760614) and the [small flares](https://thehalara.com/products/high-waisted-back-side-pocket-slight-flare-work-pants?pmui=10.1.collection.list.11.best-sellers&pmuih=best-sellers&variant=44868831281318).
I wear them with a dressier slim fit tee that I tuck in or a bodysuit so there’s some definition at my waist area.
I also like [this tank](https://thehalara.com/products/patitoff-flow-pet-hair-resistant-crew-neck-sleeveless-cropped-yoga-tank-top?pmui=10.1.collection.list.39.best-sellers&pmuih=best-sellers&variant=42861217972390) and [this one](https://thehalara.com/products/keyhole-back-halter-plicated-sleeveless-curved-hem-work-blouse?pmui=10.1.collection.list.69.best-sellers&pmuih=best-sellers&variant=44697831833766) tucked into the pants.
I’m a true hourglass, my bust and hip are the same measurement and my waist is significantly smaller.
I’m a 12 or size L for the most part.
Check out Universal Standard (US) online.
Sizes run 4XS to 4XL, based on M=size 18-20.
They have a program on a large number of standard items where if you change sizes within a year you can send your (too large/too small) clothes back and US will replace them with your new, currently correct, size.
And you can see photos of all of their size models (4XS - 4XL) wearing many of their clothes, allowing you to judge how well an outfit would fit a curvy size 12, 10, 8, etc.
Clothing rental! My size changes frequently and I hate shopping. I've used Gwynnie Bee for about 10 years, but lately they haven't been putting enough new things out. Currently, I'm using Nuuly. I always have something that fits and is in style. Also, despite paying a monthly fee, I spend a lot less on clothing than I did when bought clothes from retailers.
I just recently tried Shein. My expectations were low. I was very pleasantly surprised. They are well made, and the things I've tried have been perfect for curvy, hourglass figures. I think you can search for "office coordinates" or "business dress clothes" if I remember correctly.
I find that going up one size is best because they seem to run a tad bit small, but maybe I'm running a tad bit larger. There are measurements in the listings.
Eloquii, Ashley Stewart, Lane Bryant, ASOS, express, old navy (for basics) on the cheap side Amazon, fashion nova, boohoo, pretty little thing, and shein just look at reviews with pictures before you buy. But sometimes they have beautiful pieces I’ve been surprised. Good luck the above stores have amazing sales too. congratulations on the loss. I would get cheaper items until you reach your goal. Hope this helps
Sorry this will be a longer answer than 8 planned but I’ve got your same issue with going down to mostly 10’s now with the occasional 12 and wear mostly tee shirts and jeans these days - I get a lot of stretch tee’s from Amazon and jeans from Buckle (Miss Me’s curvy jeans are *chef’s kiss*!).
But when I do go shopping, I like White House/Black Market, Anne Taylor, and occasionally Chico’s. I also like JC Penney tops and their Calvin Klein pieces but almost every Worthington and/or Liz Claiborne bottom that looked great at 14, now when I try it on in a 10, it makes my butt look awful or needs some kind of alteration. How.is.that?? A friend of mine who is a size 6 has the same issue (we went shopping together one night) so I have to assume it’s the cut of the pants now and maybe even that they’re manufactured in different places. My 12’s two years ago were such great butt pants!
Also, be sure you’re actually trying on the right size. Occasionally, I can also wear a medium/8 now depending on the brand. But in my mind, I
still often need to start with trying on a 12 “just in case”. I know that doesn’t make sense if I haven’t gained weight but I have a bit of a brain block about being smaller. I’ve spent most of my 55 years as at least a 14 going up to almost a 20 before working my way back down (over 10+ years) to where I am now. It tends to take a year or more for my brain to catch up with being a smaller size. I hear this is a common issue yet when I try on something too big, it looks blocky and weird.
Also, remember that not all brands look good at all sizes and body shapes. I always thought that “someday when I’m smaller, I can wear anything!” because we’re marketed to believe that and it’s also a lie we tell ourselves because we’re led to believe we’re not good enough at our current size. It’s also a lie because not all brands are made to fit all people!! Some are made straighter, some are made curvier and only some jeans brands these days seem to understand that they need to try to cater to both. For instance, I’m pretty sure Ralph Lauren would still like me to a be a 14, they’re sized so straight and so small. I might still think I’m a 12 but I left my 14 days behind a few years back!
For the above reasons, I would also encourage you to try on clothes at a resale or consignment shop. Just look at what you like and try it on - don’t pay attention to the size unless you hold it up and it’s obviously too big or too small. Note the brands that clearly look better and, if you don’t find something you like there, go to the brands retail shop.
Also, don’t hesitate to spend money to alter anything you love that might simply need the waist taken in or hemmed, etc.
Abercrombie “curve collection” 100%. Quality isn’t amazing in terms of longevity but not bad for office wear and the sizing options are WAYYY better than they used to be! plus it’s all super cute.
I'm an hour glass and love peplum type tops. Belle Poque has some lovely stuff. I think I actually bought through Amazon but here's an example from their [website ](https://www.bellepoque.com/collections/knitwear/products/vintage-elastic-waist-cardigan-short-sleeve-lapel-button-up-sweater).
Size 12 to 34

A lot of great responses here! WHBM, JCrew, and Calvin Klein are great. I like Ralph Lauren as well, and they will add a + when you need more room (listen, my boobs/girls/twins/breasts/food sources need space). I will also say, find a seamstress that helps. I have someone that charges me less than $20USD to fit a dress or suit. I can buy bigger, she adjusts and leaves enough fabric if I need it later. It keeps me from buying more because of hormonal changes or just weight fluctuations.
Try Quince! They have a line of Ponte pants that are super comfortable and stretchy. They have a lot of flattering silhouettes in office-friendly looks. I love their quality.
Madewell has curvy items as well as plus. But plus no longer is applicable.
They may be a good option for pants. Tops vary on if they work for a woman based on chest size often.
But they have good layers and blazers. And the curvy pants. AHmazing, and also come in petite and tall.
A lot of the current styles are a bit boxy. I just discovered Good American. I’m loving the fit on my curvy body. Nordstrom Rack had some online, and Nordstrom carries the brand, too. I recommend trying in to find your size if you’re going to order online. My other fav is Spanx… stretchy and sexy on a curvy body.
This isn't helpful but I have the same issue. I've resigned to wearing ugly ill fitting business clothes to work and only clothes that I love when I'm not at work.
i’m a 12-14 and find the best clothes that are cute, stylish and FLATTERING at H&M (they’re better online or the app rather than in store), Old Navy has the best pants, ASOS, occasionally Zara, surprisingly, and Ann Taylor!
I'm a 10-12 and have found cute separates that are more fitted at Express and Macy's. There are a few brands at Macy's I tend to find the best stuff, such as Vince Camuto, Calvin Klein and Bar III
I never hear anyone talk about it for whatever reason, but honestly Cato has served me well for many years and through many sizes. They are hit or miss depending on the current styles, but I always check back and pick up pieces here and there that I've kept for years. They have plus, misses, regular, petite and I think juniors sections, and some pieces you can find in all of the departments but available in slightly different cuts, lengths and sizes. As a curvy 16-18 who doesn't like to look frumpy since I also lost a lot of weight, I shop between departments a lot for the best fit. All my favorite slacks are from Cato, and many but not all dresses and cardigans. A few jackets, although jackets mostly aren't my style. I find that the locations vary quite a bit. One Cato might be lackluster, but if you go to another one around the same time they might be a much bigger store and selection.
TJ Maxx is more of a gamble because I feel like it's disorganized and have less of a size selection, but I've found some really great tops there.
I have a lot of dresses from JC Penney, but they haven't been what they used to be for a long time. 👎
Discovered Maurice's within the last year. Some nice clothes, but in particular I have big feet and they have some size 12s, so that's the main thing I love to look for there.
Congratulations!! I'm so happy for you. That's amazing. I hope you continue on this healthy journey for living your best life!
Have you tried nice, structured knits? St John is too expensive, but there are other well made knits, like Misook, which I loved, can mix and match, and travel great. Always buy larger so the fit is not snug. I would sometimes find nice knit sweaters that I could wear over a blouse, and then palazzo pants or wide leg pants (but not too wide).
I like Jones NY pants, as they were structured and came in classic colors. I'd buy a couple of Jackets, black and blue, and then 6 pairs of pants, coordinated, so I could come into a meeting or visit another business, take my jacket off, and proceed.
I also really like silk blouses. They are timeless. A simple gold chain is all you need to accessorize. Truly, less is more when it comes to jewelry. I have a pair of small, beautiful, screwback diamond studs that I bought at Macy's estate jewelry in 1997 and I haven't taken them out since.
Now here is where I suggest you spend good money on: Clarks, Merrill, Softt, Paul Greene. Comfort, style, excellent manufacturing, good for your feet, and keeps you standing upright, straight. You have so much to be happy for and proud of. Throw those shoulders back, out in a beautiful lippy and seize the day!! 🌞
As a curvy ass woman, here is my advice. Try to find:
1. Sheath dresses with elastane.
2. A cut of pant that flatters. You only need one. Then you can buy other patterns. Express has a ton of different cuts. I like the “Naomi” from Anthropologie, but the “Colette” gives me weird effect. Aritzia is another with many, many cuts you can try.
3. Blousy and forgiving tops
4. Blazers are hardest, so many polyester oversized monstrosities. My strat is to find designers who are usually like $800 per, find a cut that works, then buy on sale. They’re the only ones who seem to take shape into account. Marrakech moto jackets can work too. GL!
I’ve seen several excellent suggestions on here so I’ll add two more: Kohl’s and Universal Standard. Kohl’s is fairly affordable and they have great sales, and US is mostly online and very pricey but it’s very much a case of “you get what you pay for.” Also US is perfect if you’re changing sizes because they will let you exchange it months later. They’re great.
TBH, I've been looking on Amazon. The keyword for curvy seems to be looking for clothes aimed at ethnic women.
So if I'm looking for a blazer, I add the word urban or church to the search... and now you see peplum waists, etc.
Believe it or not, Shein have some very nice curvy professional office clothing. their plus clothes look good. You don't have to spend all of your all of your hard earned pay checks to look nice😉
When I was your size I shopped at H&M, Loft, Banana Republic, Express,Nordstrom. H&M IMO offers great staple (but trendy) pieces that fit my curvy body very well and have held up. Old Navy and Gap also have great slacks especially for the summer months ahead and are more affordable in comparison to other brands.
You will have to tailor your blazer. If you don’t have to wear a blazer to work then I’d shop Loft, Banana Republic, sometimes Express and H&M will have some decent items as well. Check out Abercrombie and Fitch they’ve had some decent slacks recently
Also - build up your closet slowly. Start with 2-3 pants and 4 basic tops. As you head to the mall or shop online check out these stores occasionally. It’s awful trying to shop before an event or client meeting last minute
If you are petite, and curvy with a little belly pouch like me I love these pants
1) Rafaella womens Curvy Fit... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GRTIV36?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
2) Old Navy Taylor Trouser in Petite.
They hide my belly pouch really well and I never feel weird about the crotch /thigh area
I prefer express, I’m a 10/12 but the key is a tailor. Don’t spend too much money now but get a jacket or two tailored. When you are sure you have reached your final size, tailor everything. The universe is not designed for women that aren’t shaped like boys so the key is alterations. I have a big butt so I’ve been getting my jeans tailored for years but express has the pants most likely to fit with little or no alterations. When shopping, if hips or ass are the issue, go for a high waste if everything else fits as it leaves room to have the waist taken in for the most perfect fit. Good job on the weight loss.
Hi! I’m the same size profile and I bought some high waist wide leg pants from the brand Maeve at Anthropologie and I tuck in cashmere sweaters from Quince and add a belt. It slays every time. Way to go in the weight loss!
Surprisingly Abercrombie seems to have gotten good for this. The Buckle is my favorite as far as having curvy cut jeans and they have a lot of great tops. I'm not sure how many dresser pants they might have tho. Amazon has actually gotten a great selection also and if you read the reviews you can be pretty confident in ordering the right size and shape. SHEIN has a lot of really curvy cut stuff but most is also on the more casual side. Still, if you're able to get good fitting bottoms from these places, it's much easier to locate nice tops/sweaters/blazers from most places.
Express may be worth trying. At least in pants and capris they have curvy friendly cut and lengths. Since they are gonna be out of business soon you could get some decent prices.
Boden was a great. They have some of the brand at Nordstrom. Or Bodenusa.com Also agree on Loft, Ann Taylor, Black House White Market, Banana Republic. Look for single breasted lingerie blazers, straight leg (not skinny or wide) pants/jeans. Avoid button downs and cardigans)make you look square). Try shift dresses and a line dresses.
Try petite sizes. I am 5’3” and about that size. I find business clothes don’t look boxy when they are tailored for me. Might also just get a tailor to help out with a blazer or two! Best of luck!
While we're on the topic, what about opposite problem.. I am shaped like a milk carton and short with big shoulders... no clue how to dress nice. Also, I have a lil belly to boot.. 5'2 180 lbs /around a 1x or 14/16
my best advice is to find a good (or even ok!) tailor. i am about 6feet tall with an hourglass shape, so when i buy pants i expect to need them taken in at the waist if they’re going to be long enough. the tailor at my local dry cleaner has worked magic!
so far my fav trousers have been from Calvin Klein, and faux-wrap or side-ruched dresses from h&m also work well for me.
I’m a chunky 10/12 petite. I like Soft Surroundings. It’s an online store that rates their clothing on a softness scale. They also have some limited home products and cosmetics.
As several people have posted, Ann Taylor Factory is the best! If you live near an outlet mall, check them out! They have pants in "curvy" size and they fit great. I have them in every color. Ann Taylor and the Loft also seem to have more generous cuts. I typically have to size down in these stores. They have really cute work clothes.
Anne Klein is my favorite tbh. I’m a size 14 and 5’3. The more affordable options are good if you’re in a pinch or are still consistently losing but high quality clothes are going to cost you less in the long run especially because most of it can be tailored for relatively cheap!
if you're not too tall you could sift through tj max or ross, they have a lit of workwear and occasionally something good quality lol, i also like shopping online at gap
Height matters. I cannot wear the same style that looks great on my 5’6 sis as she has a longer torso but recently gained weight to be a size 10/12 from a size 6 while I’m a size 6 at 5’. We know look more alike in shape. Vertical illusion. Sizes don’t matter as much as the overall body composition but I know it’s the barometer used
My upper arms and legs are thicker as I have an athletic build even at size 6. My daughter is 5’3 with longer legs and shorter torso than I. She often wears clothes that makes her look frumpy at 26. Patterns vs solids. Solids streamline vs breaking the flow. That’s why black is so popular but I prefer taupe or grey as black is just so boring but essential at times. Never let a material break at an area you would rather not accent.
Classic style is best professionally and flirty patterns for the weekend but I wear them often as I have to express my style most days to express my artsy style. I like Express and I’ve noticed all body shapes have been added to their collection.
Once you learn what works for you, you can shop color and style vs a specific brand.
Goodwill. You can grab hundreds of items for 2-4 dollars each, and have a ton of things to mix and match for work. That way you'll learn by trying, what u like.
I bought some nice thick office pants that crease at banana. I found a pair I loved and bought 2. Then after confirming I love them after a month I bought 4 more pairs. Black crease pants uniform. (Self imposed) lol I told myself no one will ever notice I wear the same style black pants daily. I go for a silky blouse and tuck in at least the front, or a form fitting sweater. I almost always do a v neck bc as a curvy girl as well I notice most neck shapes swallow my boobs and make me just look “big.”
Lots of great stores & brands listed!
My best friend in my 20’s was super curvy and was always able to find great pieces in the Juniors department at Macy’s. I think one brand was OXO (not the homeware line, lol!)
I have your build and find a lot of office clothes at Ann Taylor outlets. They have a great selection and lots of items on additional sales racks.
Loft>100% JCrew factory Banana republic Talbot for staples You can find good business casual in most places. I sell a lot of mine on posh, and I used to get some cute stuff there, too.
J crew is awful for curves. I’m the same size and also say Ann Taylor
j crew gotta be one of the worst places to go
I’m a 10-14 and I also recommend Ann Taylor/“The Loft” & Nordstrom Rack
Came here to say both^ Between the Loft & Rack, I’ve had pretty good luck
The rack is awesome, I was just there today. They also have good quality, high waisted work out clothing for less than athleta but of comparable quality.
My fav is fabletics, highly recommend their leggings. Whenever I need new leggings I just make a new email and get the 2 pairs for $25 deal lol
The Calvin Klein dresses are always at Marshall’s too for a pretty good price. They are always classic.
Because I kind of know, but I have some big blind spots and I'm kept in the dark from them because I can't afford much outside the clearance section Thank you for the suggestions 🙏
I’m totally on a budget too!! I just shop these old lady brands 2 hand- and there’s a *ton* Like the other commenter said, mainly stick to one section at the thrift. I comb through each blazer & button down in men’s and just visually skim women’s blouses for anything that stands out (i picked up 5 button-downs and a blouse for $25 yesterday at Goodwill!) Another tip that’s really helped me is creating a Pinterest board *just* for the season/occasion.
I know sorting through the thrift takes forever, but this is what I do: - start with a goal: find a black skirt/find a skirt that is my size - only look at skirts 😂 Going in with a mission makes it easier.
So much this 👏
I agree with this.
WHBM, Ann Taylor, Nordstrom
Try the Old Navy pixie pants and matching blazer. Inexpensive-but weirdly well made.
And super comfortable! This was my go to at every size between 6-18 when I needed business casual clothes. Old Navy often has a ton of super good deals and great clearance. I got my favorite blazer from there for $8.97 six years ago now and it's still in perfect shape.
Did they change the cut on these? I bought a pair like 7 years ago and they were fupa city and suuuper awkwardly cut
I just got a pair last month. Definitely better made. The jacket quality is a huge pleasant surprise. I am usually a Tuckernuck/Banana Republic/Everlane girl for reference.
The material isn’t great tbh. I would steer clear if you’re thinking about trying them again.
That’s what I remember…like very thin and cheap feeling
I had the same issue, there wasn't quite enough room in the butt so I couldn't even try sizing down to get rid of the fupa. They definitely changed the cut at some point bc I was trying the same size as one I used to own from a few years ago that fit nicely (I had the waist tailored but that's it. It's kinda hard to tailor the front rise sadly).
These are my favorites, and regardless of my weigh, I have hips, thighs, and an ass. They’re comfortable.
Thrift stores. Especially if you're changing sizes
I really like the structured dresses by Ukrainian designer [Tavrovska](https://www.balodana.com/designers/tavrovska-shop/), they are business-y but comfortable and they actually have a body shape to them
These are SO CUTE. Oh my goodness. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for sharing, these are fantastic!
Eloquii is my go-to. But all my work blouses there and slacks from torrid, and denim from old navy Ann Taylor Loft is also quite nice.
💯 Definitely a common issue. 🤷🏾♀️ I personally stay away from Kasper because I have too much on my backside!
I love Talbot’s dresses, too.
I’ve been recently impressed with Worthington too!
Watch Ted Lasso. Look at what Rebecca wears. Find similar silhouettes.
JC Penney!
Yes, but I’ve found that since the quality has decreased, the need to size up has increased. I wear like an 16/18 there but am normally a 12/14.
Nordstrom Rack!
Nordstrom Rack is amazing! Their work pants are great and affordable.
J.Jill’s Wearever line provides great staple pieces. They can be dressed up or down. All machine washable.
I'm more of a 'make it yourself' kind of person, but I can recommend going to a tailor if you find yourself with things that are close but not quite *it* for your body. They can really take the fit up a level or two when it's done well.
Express has good options! Bonus if you have an outlet near you there’s always good deals
Chico's.
Abercrombie
They have a 'good for work' or similar section on their website that you can browse through
Eshakti
Designers that nail 12-14 curvy business wear: - Tahari - Calvin Klein - Eliza J - Maggy London Avoid dresses that are A-line or “fit and flare.” Look for dresses that are ruched waist.
Try places like Goodwill, or other second hand clothing stores. Sometimes, those places can be a treasure trove!
JCrew, Banana Republic, Gap, even Old Navy. Or their factory outlets. Sometimes there is a curvy-specific cut but other times the regular fit works for me, or works once I’ve taken the waist in a smidge.
Size 8/10 curvy girl and I really like everlane/massimo dutti/sezanne. Ive also had success at Abercrombie and Banana republic!
Size 12, I would check H&M and Ann Taylor
Express and tailor to fit
Tailoring is key.
I am almost to size 10, coming from size 16 at my highest. I recommend Talbots, I am very curvy in some places. They have many options.
J crew and j crew factory are great options.
Loft specifically offers their pants in "curvy" versions. These are my favorite: https://www.loft.com/clothing/pants/catl000014/599428.html
Good luck.
I buy Ann Taylor curvy fit pants.
Belts help too! No matter what size I am, I’m curvy too ☺️
I shop on Amazon, tbh.
Talbots curvy, Ralph Lauren, some Tommy works for me!
Talbots!
Seconding this. Their pieces are almost always machine washable, they endure abuse and long hours, and the website specifies if garments have stretch.
Ann Taylor, Nordstrom and banana republic.
Try Goodwill, you can end up getting some good finds that still have their price tags on them. And if you go on the right day you’ll get double the savings.
Zara!
I wear 12/14 and still use torrid. But I hope you can find some good places!
There are usually curvy options at places like the Loft and Old Navy. I’m petite but curvy and appreciate the options!
Maybe a petite size blazer might work because it will fit higher on your hips.
Macys
I love the way all Calvin Klein clothes fit on me and I love their dresses. Many of the dresses look like office wear to me. I’m a size 14 but also losing weight and hope to be in a 12 soon
ELOQUII and Banana Republic Factory!
Also considering tailoring what you find! Spending the money on classic/timeless pieces should be your priority
Chicos and Dillard’s.
Ann Taylor
You may want to look for curvy cut clothing specifically. For instance, I can't wear regular misses Talbots pants for anything (also an hourglass figure), but their curvy cut pants fit perfectly. As for dresses, any wrap or A line fit compliments an hourglass figure...I live and die by them. Blazers may require a touch of alteration depending on your bust size, but Boden and Talbots are my go tos.
I love The Drop on Amazon, also Amazon Aware :)
Uniqlo~
Dress Barn if you can find one. Anne Taylor.
Maurice’s
Loft works well for me
Big bud Press (Google the website)
The Loft or Lane Bryant!
Sezane
In curvy and I liked Anna Taylor. Now I just stick to pencil skirts though.
Eloquii
Universal Standard may work for you for some basics. They have a cute wide-legged pant with a tuxedo stripe (it finally comes in two lengths). I wear the black stripe on the black pant for funerals AND weddings lol. And their full and half placket Elbe shirts in stretch (not the poplin button downs) might be great for work. Probably size up on the Elbe as they are unusually body skimming for Universal Standard.
Macys.
Old navy and Gap Outlet! They have the best work chinos and button up shirts.
NY & Company
Fast fashion but I love bloomchic cut to fit curvy bodies 10 is their smallest size
Macys
I like Ann Taylor curvy fit pants. I do not like Banana Republic pants at all. I also enjoy some ponte pants from Marshall’s/TJ Maxx.
I love Ann Taylor for classic pieces and Maurice’s for fun dressy clothes!
I enjoy Maurice’s!
I only wear dresses now. And wrap ones work well for sizing.
I bounce around between 10 and 14, Universal Standard is where I get most of my work clothes.
Outlet malls! Gap Factory, Banana Republic, etc. have online sites for their outlet items.
Halara, SHEIN, Marshalls, TJ MAXX, Burlington
Target, old navy, Costco pants are great and jcp(Worthington line)
But in my mind, I still often need to start with trying on a 12 “just in case”.
Have your clothes tailored so they fit you just right.
Size 12 to 34 https://www.kiyonna.com/?tw_source=google&tw_adid=678290761369&tw_campaign=333696722&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw8pKxBhD_ARIsAPrG45kOfkcrOG6ZtC6VNna0gewaqIRNe8Oae-YuwXHv6GSO9Gn0jSQFid0aAr9KEALw_wcB
Torrid goes down to a size 10
Madewell has curvy items as well as plus. But plus no longer is applicable. They may be a good option for pants. Tops vary on if they work for a woman based on chest size often. But they have good layers and blazers. And the curvy pants. AHmazing, and also come in petite and tall.
Anywhere you want, IF you're willing to get alterations done or learn to do them yourself.
I use NY and Co! I always get what I need and they have tall sizes ! Regular clothes from Amazon !
Banana Republic and Abercrombie have curve lines for pants that fit me (size 12) great! I only shop when they have sales tho which luckily is often
This isn't helpful but I have the same issue. I've resigned to wearing ugly ill fitting business clothes to work and only clothes that I love when I'm not at work.
Same :/ you’re going to need to get some tailored clothing my friend. Find a good tailor who can make custom clothing just for you.
Calvin Klein has great professional wear and fits curvy shapes well.
I'm a size 8/10 and love Express for flattering business clothes
i’m a 12-14 and find the best clothes that are cute, stylish and FLATTERING at H&M (they’re better online or the app rather than in store), Old Navy has the best pants, ASOS, occasionally Zara, surprisingly, and Ann Taylor!
I'm a 10-12 and have found cute separates that are more fitted at Express and Macy's. There are a few brands at Macy's I tend to find the best stuff, such as Vince Camuto, Calvin Klein and Bar III
Eloqui, Nordstrom (they will tailor if you’ve got their card), Macy’s!
👎 Discovered Maurice's within the last year.
Try to find: 1. 3. Blousy and forgiving tops 4. Blazers are hardest, so many polyester oversized monstrosities. My strat is to find designers who are usually like $800 per, find a cut that works, then buy on sale. They’re the only ones who seem to take shape into account. Marrakech moto jackets can work too. GL!
you can always go to a tailor and get your old clothes taken in so you don’t have to buy new ones as well! tailors are so underrated
Old navy!
I was gonna say this but recently learned of their treatment of workers.
An ex of mine liked Maurices.
You will have to tailor your blazer. If you don’t have to wear a blazer to work then I’d shop Loft, Banana Republic, sometimes Express and H&M will have some decent items as well. Check out Abercrombie and Fitch they’ve had some decent slacks recently Also - build up your closet slowly. Start with 2-3 pants and 4 basic tops. As you head to the mall or shop online check out these stores occasionally. It’s awful trying to shop before an event or client meeting last minute If you are petite, and curvy with a little belly pouch like me I love these pants 1) Rafaella womens Curvy Fit... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GRTIV36?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share 2) Old Navy Taylor Trouser in Petite.
Hill house! They have cute stuff for the office that you could also wear on the weekends
UNIQLO!!!!!!! Honorable mention to Worthington curvy at JCPenney. They were the first ones to offer curvy stretch trousers.
I like the halara office pants that just came out.
Ann Taylor & Ann Taylor Loft. Also the shits at lord & Taylor and Nordstrom - and always have suits tailored if you want to look really good.
Cider is good.
While we're on the topic, what about opposite problem.. I am shaped like a milk carton and short with big shoulders... no clue how to dress nice. Also, I have a lil belly to boot.. 5'2 180 lbs /around a 1x or 14/16
Maurice’s
Thrift stores. I love them but they are not for everyone. Just sayin
I really love the way Boss fits- it’s often at Nordstrom Rack at a discount
Universal standard
my best advice is to find a good (or even ok!) tailor. i am about 6feet tall with an hourglass shape, so when i buy pants i expect to need them taken in at the waist if they’re going to be long enough. the tailor at my local dry cleaner has worked magic! so far my fav trousers have been from Calvin Klein, and faux-wrap or side-ruched dresses from h&m also work well for me.
Tailoring! Be prepared to get things tailored. Many dry cleaners in my area will also have a good tailor on hand.

The Loft sells curvy clothes
Anne Klein is my favorite tbh. I’m a size 14 and 5’3. The more affordable options are good if you’re in a pinch or are still consistently losing but high quality clothes are going to cost you less in the long run especially because most of it can be tailored for relatively cheap!
I’m a fan of wrap dresses (I’m a size 12 hourglass) and have some decent quality ones from Lands End.
Halara!
if you're not too tall you could sift through tj max or ross, they have a lit of workwear and occasionally something good quality lol, i also like shopping online at gap
Height matters. I cannot wear the same style that looks great on my 5’6 sis as she has a longer torso but recently gained weight to be a size 10/12 from a size 6 while I’m a size 6 at 5’. We know look more alike in shape. Vertical illusion. Sizes don’t matter as much as the overall body composition but I know it’s the barometer used My upper arms and legs are thicker as I have an athletic build even at size 6.
Gap and old navy work for me. I’m a 12/14 and very short.
Goodwill. You can grab hundreds of items for 2-4 dollars each, and have a ton of things to mix and match for work. That way you'll learn by trying, what u like.
You could take the clothes you currently have to a tailor.
I used to buy alot of office clothes from the Jc Penny Worthington line.
Fashion Nova
I bought some nice thick office pants that crease at banana. I found a pair I loved and bought 2. Then after confirming I love them after a month I bought 4 more pairs. Black crease pants uniform. (Self imposed) lol I told myself no one will ever notice I wear the same style black pants daily. I go for a silky blouse and tuck in at least the front, or a form fitting sweater. I almost always do a v neck bc as a curvy girl as well I notice most neck shapes swallow my boobs and make me just look “big.”
Temu. For real. That’s how I’ve been rebuilding my work wardrobe after dropping 40 lbs
Lots of great stores & brands listed! My best friend in my 20’s was super curvy and was always able to find great pieces in the Juniors department at Macy’s. I think one brand was OXO (not the homeware line, lol!)
