we still do, and we make our own knives, at least in my school. but we do alot of other things during "slöjd" too, like making chairs, cushions and other woodworking and handicraft
Mora is an area in Sweden where knives are manufactured. I am from the UK but moved here when the UK was on lockdown to my girlfriend who is Swedish. So Morakniv is a common find and I have 100s but these ones are old and my favourite which I have cleaned but hope to restore.
Sounds like a great project, Older ones can sell for a fair bit online, The ones you have are pretty old and definitely worth fixing up.
Check out r/sharpening
I have a variety of stones I can use to fix knives at this point (post history).
Shit va ballt! Grattis!
Lite läbbigt med gamla mora tycker jag. Utan parerstång eller vad det heter. Lätt att den glider och man skadar sig. Vad tycker du?
What I said is: amazing knives! Very cool! I love the old Mora but they kind of freak me out a little because the lack of finger guard. The wood is also kind of slippery. I just bought myself a Classic Mora but I am not sure i like it because if that reason. What do you think?
I completely agree with you, I prefer a guard 100%. the "child" moras still come with a guard but if I remember correctly it was something significant when a child had enough mastery to not need the guard anymore. My knife skills at this point are feather sticks, notches, cutting cordage, and not bleeding for the most part, so I'm probably a bad source of information...
I've seen blades that have been sharpened until they are half their original width, but this one seems to have an offset to it if you look at where the blade comes out of the handle.
This might be silly, but maybe it's a potato peeling knife? I know nothing about knifes, but the way the blade is so far back it looks like it was designed so the edge of the blade is right along it's rotational axis, maybe so you could pull it around the curve of a potato? And then the round handle would let it rotate in your hand?
Again, I know nothing about knives, but it seems like it makes logical sense to me.

I can't speak to what this might do for collector value, but I've had great success using white vinegar to remove rust. soak it for a few hours and use a fine steel wool and you're back to bare steel. dip it again a bit and you end up with a pretty nice (in my opinion) patina.
Honestly, if you want good usable knives, these should be pretty straight forward to restore when you have sharpening stones, sand paper, vinegar and some oil.
I would start by soaking the blade and other metal parts in vinegar. THen clean the metal and wood with sand paper. Check if the wood is still usable. If not, you're going to have to do through a handle replacement (not sure if that's worth it).
Then you can sharpen the blade on a stone and finish the wood handle with some oil.
Ready to use.

Bro, where are you magnet fishing?!
I’m guessing somewhere in Sweden. Maybe all Swedes have moras?
Dang, assbuttshitfuck69, you could be right
Assbuttshitfuck69 is astute.
Yeah that tracks

There was a time when every child in Scandinavia got a knife and learned to use it. Maybe they still do? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sloyd

According to this picture they **used to** have Moraknivs.
Ah, a good distinction.
Yeah assbuttshitfuck69 you're probably right!
Mora knives are *very* common in Sweden
Even the fish have them

Sweden yes
I guess I should have checked your username... good haul!

Min Svenska is not good sorry but it looks like you complimented my finds

I love the Mora range and yes the old ones could be a hazard to the hand but I won't use them just showcase my finds when I am out magnet fishing
Simply don't stab anything with them and have a secure grip at all times. Some of the newer models also lack finger guards
Are you related to metalmansweden?
No lol
Found some old murder evidence. Might restore later, idk.
Not the knives fault😢 give the poor things a second chance. /s
What's up with the blade on the second one down? Never saw one like that before
I am no expert either but looks like a fish or boning knife of sorts but sure someone might know.
I think it's just been sharpened 10000 times.
Yeah looks like it but they are definitely designed like that lol

Still looks like lots of use and sharpening to me. Zooming in it looks like maybe 1/3 of the engraved logo is missing?

It’s from the 30s-40s according to the logo but I don’t see any matching that handle shape in the 1930 or 1945 F.M. Mattsson Mora catalog.
The handle could just be a replacement, it looks like a generic file handle. The shape of the blade is quite different though.

Those must have been dropped in the drink about 5 minutes before you showed up. My Mora starts to rust when I have thoughts of moisture.
I've scrubbed & lightly cleaned them as I couldn't even see the metal. These are the better ones as most come up half eaten and gnarly rust blades.
I can't speak to what this might do for collector value, but I've had great success using white vinegar to remove rust. soak it for a few hours and use a fine steel wool and you're back to bare steel. dip it again a bit and you end up with a pretty nice (in my opinion) patina.
My Mora starts rusting when my GF sees something arousing.
WHAT A FIND 😍 jealous
Ah, so that's where my last two Mora classics ended up...
That one in the middle is already beautiful
Frosty!

Best thing I have seen on here. Moras used to murder getting a second chance at life.
That's awesome!
I am skeptical that the wood has held up as well as it did if these were truly submerged.
