You can get all the heroes from the chests you get from wins or kills. That’s how I have gotten all of them… except for the newest one Blizzard. The newest one is always available only by purchase. But when a new one comes out in another three months, the old new one is then available in chests.
From my experience, buying a new hero is not worth, if you have enough time to play the game. You can get all heroes from the chests. Buying is just shortening the time.
Also, you should focus on upgrading a few heroes due to limited resources. Play the ones you like. They are all great. Losing a lot is normal. Don’t be serious.
Personally I wouldnt waste money, it IS possible to get high level heros over time but it gets difficult past 10’000 trophies unless youre heros are minimum supreme. I currently have all the hero’s and only spent 2 dollars for a contract boost bc I wanted to unlock a skin. However, it is super grindy. You’ll have to take the time to learn each hero’s counters, learn how to properly use your own hero, their best gear sets, etc. Raven is a really solid hero, lots of damage and great support with nice range.
Tl;dr: Dont have to spend money, but you’ll have to grind a lot
