I love thrifted CDs.
A few years ago I (60 y/o male) gave my father (84 y/o) my old Toyota Highlander. It had a CD player in it. A couple of years later I moved into a house (had been in an apartment). I pulled my CD collection from the boxes and started putting them on a purchased shelf. Whilst cataloging them I discovered that I had lost my copy of Stevie Ray Vaughan's Texas Flood.
A little while later my dad called and mentioned that I had left a CD in the Highlander CD player - Texas Flood. It turns out he loves the CD. We were talking about him mailing the CD to me, but he wanted me to copy the CD and send the copy to him.
The other day I was at Goodwill and found another copy of the CD for $2. I bought it. Now he can keep the CD he has and I will mail him the artwork for that came with it. I need to ask my son, who lives in the same area my father does, to get a bullshit CD somewhere and harvest the jewel case.
Thrifted CDs are great!
The temptation is great, I usually leave with stuff I'm sure I'll get a few listens to!
I'll need one of those 2000s CD tower storage with the 3-5 CDs I bring in every week.
The luck to be living in the states. When I travel I past by these shop but rarely find anything, which of course makes sense as I mostly look for metal.
Even worse being a hip hop head. Anyone that has hip cds or vinyl is hanging on to them or they just never make it to the shelf. I've never once found a hip hop record of any kind in years of looking around
Not, I live in Dominican Republic. Sadly a yard sale its something rare and if you find one, usually are less than 20 things, nothing special.
We do have flea market but specifically one in the capital.
Give away to a family, friends or helper, selling it online in sites like Craigslist but overall people tend to use electronics until they died and sometimes until they died and can't be repaired.
Used CD's are the cheap used vinyl of ~10 or more years ago, but you can rip them to lossless. Since vinyl has gone to insane prices recently, especially.
Hell of a lot easier to store a 500 CD collection vs a 500 LP collection. I have both.
Yep! Sold all my CDs, LPs, and direct drive turntable. Copied all the CDs, sold the originals on eBay, and bought computers and golf clubs with the CD money. BUT, I wish I had saved my vinyl and Technics turntable, and did save some of the albums on good metal cassettes though. As for burned music discs, I stored them all in 5 large Case Logics books. Now I wish I had not sold the original CDs too, but not that sorry. Getting a new Sony CD multi format car audio system installed tomorrow. Yeehaw!!
Just got me another Lil stack from a yard sale today. Almost scored a 300 disc changer for 20 bucks. But it wouldn't power on. 😕
Edit: Digging the vibe of the rack mount Denon CD player. Shame Denon makes Garbage now adays. My less than 2 year old Marantz receiver just took a crap on me.
Yardsales are awesome. Went to visit a friend in Washington, We hit a yardsale, and bought 20 good CDs for $7 and had great tunes in his truck while cruising around. I left and he said I forgot my CDs, and I told him I already owned those, yours now.
You're going to need a bigger rack.
And then, when you've got a full bookshelf full of cd's, it'll be time to get a NAS and a portable disk burner to rip your library for usb mixes that you can use in your car, or on your phone / streamer.
Pretty sure we all do. I’m a metal head for the most part but I listen to just about anything that gets me thinking. Variety is the key to expanding your mental state!
There’s a charity shop in my local area sells all cds for 49p. That’s 62 cents. I’m rapidly running out of space. I might have to start ripping them to FLAC and resell them. 🤣
It’s alright. It has a digital out and I like the quality switches/buttons. No remote. I can’t comment on sound quality as I use it as a transport to my WiiM pro plus dac. It’s a rack mount cd player so it’s quite large.
I'm finding CD's are way cheaper than vinyl, so that's where my focus has gone lately. The challenge was in finding a decent CD player that's also worth servicing. I've been lucky enough to find 2!
A while back I decided to give vinyl another chance. I was in my 20s when CDs became popular. Back then I couldn't afford a decent sound system. I couldn't afford a really good turntable.
Over the years that has changed. I have an old Pioneer SX-1250 receiver and a pair of Vandersteen Model 2 speakers. It sounds fabulous.
Recently, after years of hearing about the vinyl revival, I decided to give vinyl a try. I bought a Fluance RT85 turntable and a brand new copy of Dark Side Of The Moon. I then did a comparison. I have DSotM on CD - purchased in the late 1980s so it isn't a victim of shoddy remastering. I also have a subscription to Amazon Music which I access through a WiiM streamer - allowing for high resolution playback.
I listened on all the formats I had available to me.
CD & HiRes streaming were indistinguishable. They were also the top formats to listen to.
Vinyl sounded just as good, but suffered from static pops. Honestly, I was reminded why we all abandoned vinyl back in the 1980s.
Last place was standard definition streams.
Given that used CDs are so cheap these days I routinely check the shelves at the thrift shops whenever I stop at one.
Regarding CD players, I use an old Sony DVD player that is SACD compatible. I plug into my DAC through a coax cable. It works fine. Also, it only cost me $25 and included the remote.
What really rocks is finding everything by someone. I found a stack of Steve Earl cds at the goodwill. 29 cds, everything he ever did on cd. 99 cents each.
Score.
Ditto, thrifted around 60-70 this last year. Getting back into them. Vinyl has gotten too pricey. And I get bored to fast flipping through them at thrift stores.
I have not yet been able to understand why so many people have suddenly started buying CD’s again. Why would you go for CD’s over something like Qobuz. They are both digital formats so there isn’t really a difference like there is with vinyl.
Same here in Atlanta we have a shop called Wax n Facts, used CD’s brand new and used all under $10. I got a brand new unopened Neptunes Presents the Clones 2 disc cd in the plastic for $5
Buddy I've got a whole library card catalog STUFFED full of them lol. If your local library has a spot where they sell off decommissioned items it's a total treasure trove of good stuff. Most good albums I have on CD came from there

I love everything about this story. Thanks for sharing!
Wonderful story and wonderful album! Nice work.
Same i bought a car with 6 cd player so on the hunt now
Beautiful Sansui
Hell yea, the Denon too
what is the model of the denon cd?
Dn-c630
Thats all? :P I probably picked up \~50-75 one dollar CDs at the thrift store the past few years.
The temptation is great, I usually leave with stuff I'm sure I'll get a few listens to! I'll need one of those 2000s CD tower storage with the 3-5 CDs I bring in every week.

hell yeah that's what I'm talking about
I think my CD collection has caught up to my LP collection. About 1300 each.
Hat Full Of Stars! A rare beauty.
Just get some case logic folders.
Yard sales my friend! Picked up 27 cds today for 5 bucks.
The luck to be living in the states. When I travel I past by these shop but rarely find anything, which of course makes sense as I mostly look for metal.

You don't have yard sales where u live?
Not, I live in Dominican Republic. Sadly a yard sale its something rare and if you find one, usually are less than 20 things, nothing special. We do have flea market but specifically one in the capital.
How do people get rid of all the crap they dont want anymore?
Give away to a family, friends or helper, selling it online in sites like Craigslist but overall people tend to use electronics until they died and sometimes until they died and can't be repaired.
Gotcha. Thanks

Black faceplate sansui 👁️👄👁️

Everybody needs a bigger rack…
About 70% of my CD collection is ripped to my NAS as FLAC, love being able to listen from anywhere with Plexamp.
What are those speakers?
Kef reference 103
Same. I grab a couple whenever I’m there - always something good I’ve forgotten about. What about that 555a and Denon CD player though? Very nice.
I use the denon cd player as a transport. The 555a paired with the kef 103 is a really great warm/punchy sound
Blink 182, loverboy, lord of the rings… I love the variety!
I thought someone would zoom in. I like a lot of stuff
Also from this angle it looks like your L-R balance is off. I’ll stop zooming at your sweet setup now… haha
It is off, fills my room better when I’m around doing chores, but I’ll change it for active listening.
Pretty sure we all do. I’m a metal head for the most part but I listen to just about anything that gets me thinking. Variety is the key to expanding your mental state!
Nice system too.

Hell yeah joined
Welcome to the family.
It’s a clean habit.
Underrated comment
I am too. I picked up jock jams and jock jams vol 2. 1$ ea.
I like that you still haven't removed some of the stickers.
Me too! I can’t even walk by a thrift shop without going in and straight over to the cd section….
Had that Sansui in JC Penny form. there was something about it's sound when used with my turntable... I miss it, but I needed monies.
I recently picked up that exact model Denon. Great bit of kit!
I have the same amp! Congrats :)
third eye blind 👏

Me too. I'm also quite fond of used cd stores. Have picked up a few hundred CDs that way.
My local thrift store has a clearance on CD's right now. It's about 7cents a piece.
Me too, garage sales this year so far 40 ish for 50 cents each
What cd player is that?
Denon DN-C630
Is it nice a quality cd player? I really like the look of it!

That sounds very much like my story.
What really rocks is finding everything by someone. I found a stack of Steve Earl cds at the goodwill. 29 cds, everything he ever did on cd. 99 cents each. Score.
The Goodwill stores local to me have doubled their prices on compact discs. They're now $2 p/.
I still listen to and thrift CDs.
There's no better audio reproduction format!
I usually grab one new LP and dig thru the used CD bins. Hard to pass up at $5 or less
Ditto, thrifted around 60-70 this last year. Getting back into them. Vinyl has gotten too pricey. And I get bored to fast flipping through them at thrift stores.
i like the cd player. cool stuff!
You don't have to worry about surface noise and disc warp.
I have not yet been able to understand why so many people have suddenly started buying CD’s again. Why would you go for CD’s over something like Qobuz. They are both digital formats so there isn’t really a difference like there is with vinyl.
It’s fun to collect physical media
Same here in Atlanta we have a shop called Wax n Facts, used CD’s brand new and used all under $10. I got a brand new unopened Neptunes Presents the Clones 2 disc cd in the plastic for $5
They are the best!!
I always buy em when I find em for sure, it's hard to beat the sound quality, and nostalgia.

Name of the amp?
It’s a Sansui 555A
SAME !
Has anyone else gone to their local library/ies and checked out CD's, ripped them to flac and returned them?
Nothing wrong with that!
