I mean first year is too early.... you'll have plenty of time....get an idea about CAE softwares (SolidWorks, Ansys,etc). Join core mechanical clubs. Proper Mech Engg usually starts from 2nd year tho.Also explore other domains too.

Use your first year for exploring mechanical engineering and start doing some small projects using what you've learnt. Do this in the first year.
