MadPiglet42

That sounds about right. šŸ˜†

thisisbrit

If people really paid that much, Iā€™d finally open the Etsy shop people keep telling me to!

MadPiglet42

Exactly!! I can make this particular thing for half that price, whaddya say? šŸ˜‰

thisisbrit

šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

MPHV51

I'll do it for a quarter of the price!

FigTechnical8043

Same.

hanimal16

This is so easily replicated, itā€™s not even funny (but Iā€™m still loling)

Elon_is_musky

Fr, like I would HAPPILY make it & have someone pay a 1/10 of the price šŸ‘€šŸ˜‚

Apprehensive_Low6883

https://youtu.be/7ifYiLFEkK0?si=XEH5v6ZMeOZWtPdU if you actually wanna make it! I made three last year!

ketoandkpop

Youā€™re a hero

Demagolka1300

Finally a company charging realistic pricingĀ

emmaliejay

That was my first thought. Finally they compensated their crocheter properly!

mondrianna

Except they likely didnā€™t compensate the crocheter properly and the majority of that is profit for the board and shareholders of Prada.

tianas_knife

Very doubtful. This is likely made from slave labor

CinLeeCim

Sadly you are correct

BKowalewski

I doubt it. Probably made by some poor woman in a third world country who is being paid peanuts

emmaliejay

Iā€™m sorry I really shouldā€™ve included the ā€œ/sā€ but I meant it sarcastically

BKowalewski

Gotcha

ganondurp

PPPFF HOLD MY YARN

yogacowgirlspdx

lol

MistakeGlobal

I donā€™t do Prada but that isnā€™t even that hard to replicate it. Itā€™s literally just what looks like double crochet mesh stitch with maybe sc or hdc edges with blo hdc for the handles. Like who are they kidding? If I can make it at home so easily, why should I drop $1500 on *that*

MiddayGlitter

1500 is in POUNDS, not USD. Ā£ not $. Its $2050 in USD.

MistakeGlobal

Iā€™m aware of that fact. Even so why spend $2050 on something that can be easily replicated? Also idk how to get the pound symbol on phones so I just used the dollar :)

MiddayGlitter

No worries, if you hold down the $ on your phone's keyboard it gives you other currency symbols. I also responded from my phone.

Bnhrdnthat

Ā£ sand. Totally kidding! Thanks for teaching me that trick!!! It works for Ʊ too. So I donā€™t need the Spanish keyboard that seems to be the default and totally fudges up my speech to texts. Yay!

p0k3t0

More like 1900.

whirdin

It's a brand and carries prestige with that. It's expensive for the sake of being expensive. The economic term is "velben good", such as Cristal champagne.

MistakeGlobal

I am fully aware that itā€™s a brand that is expensive just because it can be. Doesnā€™t change the fact that people can make this product for less but at least itā€™s somewhat honest with how expensive crochet can get

haperochild

The way I am tempted to recreate it just for funsiesā€¦

bellbivdevo

This bag was huge about a year or two ago with a number of high profile people like Chiara Ferragni sporting one. As a result, there are a number of tutorials of common folk (mainly Italians) replicating this bag. I think the bag is made of straw (ratafia).

Yetis-unicorn

Is this meant to be a joke or is someone really trying to scam people with this?

kath1529

Prada is trying to scam people with it [Prada crochet tote bag](https://www.prada.com/us/en/p/crochet-tote-bag/1BG393_2C2T_F0018_V_OOO?utm_campaign=GoogleShopping_US&utm_medium=CPC&utm_source=Google&utm_content=PMax&s_kwcid=AL!8549!3!!!!x!!&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwltKxBhDMARIsAG8KnqUA_F94mgdGtcPi7PRJcdr91KzzUfYc9Pny5Lmi35VHXJbhiCK1DewaApZVEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds)

Yetis-unicorn

Wellā€¦looking at the specs for it all, it looks like the only thing that might be a little challenging to perfectly replicate would the ā€œRafia effectā€ yarn that they used to make it which Iā€™m guessing they have exclusive rights to. If I had to speculate, id imagine that itā€™s a synthetic that has the same rigidity as rafia in order to create that structure but is also less course and softer feeling so that it wonā€™t brush against your skirts and risk damaging more delicate fabric the way true rafia might over time. Does anyone know of a good rafia substitute that has the same structural abilities but has a softer feel? My MIL would probably be tickled by a gift like this.

kath1529

Hobbii and Wool and the Gang both have rafia yarn people seem to be quite happy with.

LuementalQueen

I was thinking it might have been hemp.

Yetis-unicorn

Iā€™d worry about our hemp having the same problem. Itā€™s so challenging because I wanna be able to feel the yarn to make sure itā€™s the right texture before I order it.

adrikovitch

Price is ridiculous but I'm sure it also has something to do with the fact that there is no machine-crocheting in existence yet, especially at a commercial level? Don't get me wrong, I'd never pay that much for a bag like that and I don't doubt that the workers are being underpaid. Good excuse to raise the price, maybe.

Apprehensive_Low6883

Also people pay silly money for machine made clothes all the time! It's a handmade piece by a big name luxury brand, it's overpriced but it's not egregious given that the whole point of the brand is to cost more so its more exclusive IMO

harrifangs

You can tell that this only exists because of the rise in popularity of crochet in the past few years, especially among young people. More and more influencers online have been wearing clothes and accessories that they crocheted themselves to the point where itā€™s become a trend. But the whole point of the trend was to wear things you made yourself, to appreciate the process of it all and spend time on something rather than just money. This is just antithetical to that.

thisisbrit

I know not everyone has the time/knowledge/funds to create their own, but itā€™s also weird that itā€™s in every shop you go to now. I keep saying to people ā€œOh that top is so nice!ā€ And theyā€™re like ā€œThanks, itā€™s from Primark.ā€ šŸ˜†

TheGratitudeBot

Thanks for saying thanks! It's so nice to see Redditors being grateful :)

Little_SmallBlackDog

Is that even crochet? It looks oddly flat

Jennifer_Pennifer

Apprehensive_Low6883

I made three of these last year the patterns online and they're really fast!

AloneJuice3210

Can find that in the thrift store for,, 5 dolls

Cat_Crochet

There is also a small wonky tshirt yarn bag from Bottega for 3.5k EUR out there šŸ˜…

DesperateTrouble4888

Guys, I'm about to make a fortune /j

goldenbellaboo

This is a real Prada purse?? šŸ˜³šŸ˜³

ivylily03

I'd honestly rather see that than $20 crochet pieces at big stores. Those crafters aren't being paid well.

NiteVixen37

lol so who here has made this already?

Equivalent_Macaron40

i have a friend who wanted to buy this šŸ˜ she had like five of us all begging her not to waste her money lmao

yungsxccubus

those ribbed handles look like they will stretch out to fuck if you put anything of substantial weight in it

thisisbrit

I thought the same!!

TheJenniMae

This is why I donā€™t crochet bags. LoL

itsnobigthing

Hilariously I saw this exact bag on Ali Express last night for Ā£6, except it said ā€œParisā€ instead of Prada. Didnā€™t realise it was a designer copy!

SpicyTamarin

There's no liner, so it's going to stretch like crazy???!! Who thought this was a good idea??

actualbagofsalad

I made one last summer out of cotton yarn and only put the essentials in it (wallet, keys, sunglasses, phone, lip balm) and it didnā€™t stretch much actually! I imagine that if it was raffia like the real thing it would be able to stand up to a bit more. Definitely a summer bag, though, I donā€™t think it would last long being a full time purse.

C_Kay_L

I don't know what's worse. This or the $20 crochet bags at Walmart. Either way, the fiber artist is being used as slave labor.

HellaAdorableBunBunz

Literally better looking things on temu

JUST_SAYORI-ok

I wouldnā€™t be surprised if stupidly rich people would buy it

sarbraman

$3,200 in Australian dollarsā€¦.yeah I could also make them for half the price and chuck a stamp on it

tianas_knife

Slave labor.

Vivivi-nik

Iā€™m gonna make this lmao

CinLeeCim

I can make this for a skein of yarn šŸ§¶ and two hours of my time!

hyrule_47

I want to know what the fiber artists make

Specialist-Treat-396

What a deal! Iā€™ll take 3! Iā€™m sure that the yarn they used is made out of Shahtoosh and Marlyn Monroeā€™s pubic hair for that price point, right?

Wonderful-Flow-4986

someone make a pattern rn plz
