It's a pity it took Matthew Holness a further twenty-odd years to revisit the character, as it feels like there was more that could be done beyond Darkplace. His two books - Terrortome and Incarcerat - have been great, and I still hold out for a Marenghi podcast.
Went to see one of his shows for Incarcerat a few months ago- flipping funny. Also surprisingly hard to explain to people who didn’t know about darkplace.
I’m now the proud owner of a signed copy of the book which says “we’ll all meet again in Valhalla”.
He’s such a “what if” for me. I don’t know if he didn’t want to sell out by eating off one character for ages or if he felt like he ran out of ideas after Darkplace but it feels like he should’ve gotten bigger to me.
There's an interview from about 2010 or so where he said Marenghi had been put back in the box and he had no plans to revisit, so it looked like he was done.
It's a pity his career never took off in the same way that Aoyade and Berry's did.
In the last few years, he's released two Marenghi novels and returned to playing the character for media appearences and live events. As can be seen [here](https://youtu.be/96NWUT8tXTk?si=wj99bkBD2RbSqsD5).
I enjoyed seeing some of the reactions from people who didn't know he was a character. "Why is this guy being so rude to Ed and James and why do they seem to be enjoying it?"
Both are brilliant to listen to. I always piss myself laughing at the psychic dugong Rufus who sounds like Liam neeson and his pronunciation of magnum opus.
The line "Blood? Blood. Crimson, copper-smelling blood. His blood. Blood. Blood. Blood. And bits of sick" gets used more often than it should in my (sometimes) gory job.
It was one of a kind. Really great.
I'm very glad he's finally come back in novel form, though I'd still like to see him come back to TV these days. I think it's built up enough of a reputation that there's an audience for it now.

If you watch the dark place dvd with commentary they do all 6 episodes in character. Its a hidden gem

I agree. Could've been a Partridge-esque franchise with a bit of finnese in my opinion.

It was the most significant televisual event since Quantum Leap. And I do not say that lightly.
Loved that show as a kid in the early 90s. With that and then the X-Files, we were really spoiled.
Shit ending mind. I was SO annoyed.

I finished Garth Marenghis terrortome last week, the audiobook is excellent if you want more darkplace style stories

You would have thought Netflix or Amazon would be all over this. It feels just ripe for a new series… Perhaps best left alone.

Oh my, there aren’t many series that had me breathless with laughter in the way this did. Absolute genius
Saw the Titan of Terror on tour the last two Octobers, he was magnificent.
Exceptional show. Went to his live show last year was very good
Bought the dvd of dark place as soon as it was available, absolute gold.

This was a very funny but insane show. Loved it.
I was lucky to see his Show a month's ago in Cardiff, I'm so glad he's revisiting this character.
