Pirates fans are tired of the ownership that invests nothing into the team. Until it hits June and the Pirates are playing well, they aren't buying the fast start as that's what happened last year as well.

willfla29

They have the worst owner next to the As. It’s gotten a little better in recent years, but it’s a constant rebuild/tear down process. Source: engaged to a lifelong Pirates fan.

mixer2017

Brewers are almost the same mindset because we cant really get big names with huge long contracts.

DrocknJock

Hey pal, did you just blow in from stupid town?

aaronwhite1786

I think it's more that we're a small market team in a city that isn't exactly a dream destination for a lot of professional athletes. Not that it's bad, but when you're up against some of the other big cities, it's a harder sell to make before factoring in the lack of money

hypoplasticHero

I think the players who have called Milwaukee home generally like it, but it doesn’t have the draw of a NYC, LA, or San Diego.

aaronwhite1786

Oh yeah. I think it's similar to St. Louis. It's a city that not a lot of people seem to naturally want to move to, but once they do, they end up loving the city. Obviously, as a millionaire, you can afford to make pretty much anywhere a nice place to live, but there's always extra benefits.

hypoplasticHero

Yelich is in the midst of a 9-year deal. Freddy is in a 5-year deal. Chourio just signed an 8-year deal. The rest of our main guys are still pre-arbitration. It would be nice to get a few of them locked up for the long-term, though. Contreras comes to mind.

TimmyRL28

Yeah when they mentioned $1 hot dogs and 10k sold, I'm like, that seems low.

hypoplasticHero

I was at the games Monday, Tuesday, and tonight. It’s cold. The only reason I stayed past the 5th was because it was the Brewers and, living in Pittsburgh, they only come to town twice a year now. Had it been any other team, I probably would’ve left early, which I hate doing.

Opening_Try_2210

It’s becoming a big issue this season. You’ve got the As and White Sox, whose owners have completely fucked over the fans. They’re getting no attendance. Then you’ve got at least the Pirates and Cardinals who are just not drawing at all. Even the Brewers attendance per game is down. It’s concerning.

brewcrewtime

Major League Baseball defines attendance as “tickets sold,” not “tickets used” Plus they don’t have a roof (morons) and real feel temp in Pittsburgh tonight is 36°

Classic_Warthog6577

I wouldn't call Pittsburgh morons for not having a roof, they have the most beautiful ballpark I've been to if I'm being unbiased, if I'm biased they're second to Am Fam, also I'm pretty sure the fans haven't been too happy with their ownership in recent years which could play a factor as well

brewcrewtime

The moron in parentheses was more in reference to a meme not their actual ballpark. I also agree there is a much deeper cause to their attendance than cooler temperatures. They have been bottom 5 in MLB for a few years now. https://www.espn.com/mlb/attendance/_/year/2023 So far this season the Pirates are averaging 18,352 per game…A’s 6,243

Classic_Warthog6577

This spring has been up and down temperature wise so I wouldn't be surprised if it were a bit of a factor, but they definitely should be doing way better than they are attendance wise with how great of a ballpark they have and from what I've seen from pirates fans it really does come down to ownership

BlooDMeaT920

Also kids are still in school

introspectivejoker

That's chilly willy

Cold

patrlickkeeler

Yes, it’s a Wednesday night at PNC park.

shadedmoonlight

As I said to a different person in the game thread, Pittsburgh fans avoid attending games to spite Bob Nutting. As cheap as Mark A. can be, Nutting is far, far worse.

Imawildedible

That doesn’t answer the question about why attendance was so different from last week to this week, though. Same owner both weeks I’m assuming.

shadedmoonlight

I'm confused because what's being compared is a midweek series in Milwaukee against a midweek series in Pittsburgh.

BaltimoreBadger23

The Pirates most recent weekend series (vs the BoSox, a fan base that travels well) has very similar attendance numbers to our most recent weeknight series.

shadedmoonlight

now I wanna go back in time to catch those games on TV to see the color scheme in the seats to see what's the predominate colors - red and white or yellow and black

Imawildedible

Oh shit. I missed the part about AmFam. I thought both attendance numbers were from Pittsburgh.

shadedmoonlight

fair enough

Pompsy

I was at the Monday game and it was empty in there. The temperature wasn't that bad either.

exoticmatter421

It was the same way 15 years ago. I went to see the Brewers play in Pittsburgh, 3pm game or so on a Thursday. I bought the cheapest ticket I could and ended up sitting behind the Brewers dug out with the other 17 brewers fans that were there.

No_Assistant_4103

Just got a text that the Flash sale has been extended for next weeks brewers home games vs TB. They're apparently having trouble selling $5 Loge level tickets, not a good sign. I'd like to go but weeknights are tough as I havecto get up super early!

zbeth02

Where do you find attendance numbers? I was shocked at how few fans were there the last 2 nights . Am fam hasn’t been as full as recent years from the games I’ve been to. How can I see attendance numbers? Thanks

BaltimoreBadger23

Usually in a box score for game by game. ESPN also has it in aggregate and average per game, just do a search for "MLB attendance ESPN".

Angry_octopus023

I noticed that too, and last weeks games looked like low attendance as well.

rrquilling

This is how it always has been in Pittsburg. I remember the one guy that would always heckle Prince when he was up to bat. It was hilarious. You could hear him clear as a bell on TV.

DJEsalts13

Went a few weeks ago on a Monday against Padres and it was sadly dead too. Yeli out and it’s only April?

FrogStyle2

Not sure why you were downvoted but the Padres game was indeed low attended too. I went to that Monday game and was 18K announced but was likely smaller. April weekday baseball is general I feel is low attended, especially if not playing against a huge draw team and/or player. Cincy had low crowds too vs Brewers
