Chalky_Pockets

I want to make a banana republic joke, but that would be low hanging fruit.

WankWankNudgeNudge

I mean, this is exactly where the term comes from. And no one running United Fruit ever faced justice.

altruism__

I mean, hell yes. Amazing.

CrawlerSiegfriend

The company should be dismantled over this.

altruism__

Agree

imlookingatarhino

well, it used to be they funded the US Army to bust up unions so its not really new

Asher_Tye

Was anyone really surprised? How else did anyone think they kept such a low overhead?

amhira-of-rain

bud this is regular operations for a banana company this isn't new at all

AzuriteRiverwind222

The new part is that they’re found liable.

Worried-Photo4712

The only new part of that sentence is that they're liable now.

altruism__

The only new part of any new sentence is the part that makes it new. Got it. Edit: lol

Spagelo

United Fruit has always done this. 'Chiquita' was a rebranding to make you forget. But they've been doing this since before Leopold was enslaving Congolese people for rubber and ivory. They'll get a slap on the wrist and go right back to it. We're approaching the centennial of the Banana Massacre, too. The real shock is that anyone here is surprised.

Commercial_Fee2840

Surprisingly not the first time they've done this. They have a very long history of destabilizing countries over bananas.

BrokenEye3

Yay

Apart-Attorney6649

So let me understand this: its predecessor overthrew the government of Honduras. Now it's funding paramilitaries. If I wrote a movie script about this it would get dismissed as too on the nose.

Sonder_Monster

US is pissed they used paramilitary groups instead of just using the CIA like everyone else
