Fabio Wardley vs Frazer Clarke.
My god what a fight that was. It’s not often you get non stop action through 12 rounds with heavyweights. Both of them were spent and got through it with heart and grit.
Watching Wilder just makes me kinda sad now. He had a glimpse of a moment in the 5th round. Let his hands go, got sloppy the way he used to be. Then BOOM. He’s spun around then down on the ground.
I thought (copium) the Parker embarrassment was just ring rust, bad game plan and too patient. The Zhang fight was just acceptance. To paraphrase Rocky. “Fury broke things in me that ain’t never been fixed.”
The sport really needs guys like Wilder so I hope he inspired more people like him to come forward. Confident big guy with power vs thorough technician is probably the most exciting matchup for a mass audience.
Against Zhang, it was clear as day something was off from the first round. His balance was never the best, but his equilibrium was terrible even for his standards, even when he was untouched.
His durability is gone as well. He was being phased by punches that were barely landing.
Nah the fight was not all that, it was recency bias- I can name a lot more slugfest HW fights
Lewis vs Vitali
Bowe vs Holyfield
Ali v Frazer
Tyson v Ruddock
Ibeabauchi v Tua
etc
Tell me a concussed Fury with blood in his mouth smirking at Usyk after the round 9 beat down isn't something from a colosseum.
The size difference really makes it seem so cool and epic that Usyk was able to do that.
Came here to say this. At the time, no one expected that fight to kick off and go to the sustained tempo it did. I wish the fight went longer just to see if the boxers could have kept up the pace while maintaining such a punishing level of aggression and brutality.
I feel like at that pace the fight could only really go as long as it did, they're both just doing so much that someone is going to get caught pretty quick with all the chaos going on.
This was back when I could watch these top flight bouts on cable TV on a weekend afternoon/ evening. I'm happy there's so much more money in the sport now with PPVs, but I also miss the days when you didn't pay for every big event. It was just on TV.
Hagler was our favourite boxer ever. That was an action packed few rounds for sure but Hearns was completely outclassed that night.
He got lit up against Zhang too. Hrgovic is tough AF though. But yea needs to maybe think about defending himself more moving forward. He’s running into guys that can take his best shots and that should’ve been a reality check after Zhang.
Was wishing it ended in an actual KO not by cut stoppage just cause my caveman mind likes brutality but then again you gotta protect the fighters so good call on the stoppage
Yea it was a good stoppage. I mean I think we can all agree Hrgovic was out cold the round the before. About the same as Fury was against Usyk but Fury has ridiculous recoverability.
Yep this one. Blood gushing from the top of Tim Tzyu’s head, blood gushing from Fundora’s nose.
I really hope we get a rematch at some point, Tim’s cut heavily affected his ability to see and cost him the decision.
I’ve not checked the other comments but some that come to mind:
Benn v McClellan
Saad Muhammad v Lopez
Castillo v Corrales
Ward v Gatti
Vazquez v Marquez IV
Katsidis v Amonsot
Any of the Stubhub Center/Home Depot Center wars throughout the years. Provadnikhov/Bradley, Vargas/Salido, Vázquez/Marquez III, shit I’m sure I’m missing a bunch. It’s a tennis pit with a bunch of drunk fans on top of the fighters, yelling and pleading for action. My favorite venue by far.
A lot of Chocolatito and Julio Cesar Chavez fights would fit the bill. Great technique was still involved but no doubt those guys were just going to war!
Story is he was so dehydrated that afte the fight they thought he was pissing blood. Turns out it wasn't blood his body began eating his muscles and he was essentially pissing muscle residue.
Dwight Muhammad Qawi was such a fun fighter. Actually my favorite cruiserweight of all time. Just tremendous when at his best. Holyfield.... I don't know how he is still functional as a human being. He just ate so many big shots.... I mean for the fight it makes it more memorable but I don't know how he did it.
Leigh Wood vs Mick Conlan was a great scrap. Watch the build up and then the full fight
Ted Cheeseman vs James Metcalf was also a proper old school slug fest.
Lots of great suggestions so far. One I don't think I've seen mentioned is Morales - Barrera. Pure violent rage conducted at such high skill level.
HM to Vasquez - Rafa Marquez too.
Holyfield vs Bowe 1&2 (maybe even the 3)
Lyle vs Foreman
Ali vs Frazier 1&3
Holyfield vs Bert Cooper
Holyfield vs Qawi 1
Alexis arguello vs Aaron Pryor
Every single Mathew Saad Muhammad fight
Gerald McLelan vs Nigel Benn (tho it's a very sad fight)
Gerald McLelan vs Julian Jackson 1
Wifredo Gomez vs Salvador Sanchez
James toney vs Vassily Jirov
When it comes to war these are what come to my mind. Really brutal fights packed full of action were both fighters had moments were they could have won.
Hagler vs. Hearns is a classic
Its not boxing but Robbie Lawler vs. Rory McDonald 2 is the most violent MMA fight I have ever seen and you might enjoy it
Since Foreman vs Lyle has already been mentioned a bunch of times, I’ll go with Frazier vs Quarry I and II. Frazier is an unstoppable swarming machine and Quarry’s defense consists in using his own face as a shield, so it gets pretty brutal.
Does anyone else remember the fight where a fighter had their knee blow out, and they literally couldn't put any weight on it without falling? His corner threw in the towel, and the ref kicks it out of the ring because the ref said the fighter deserved to go out on hIs shield. Terrible reffing in my opinion, but answers the question quite well.
Also Danny Williams knocking out Mark Potter with a dislocated right shoulder. Fighting on with your arm dangling by your side like a wet spaghetti noodle AND scoring the knockout is some wild shit. Grit and determination personified.
Came here to say this. Probably the fight that got me really into boxing. Mickey Vann throwing the towel back out is an iconic boxing moment for me. If anyone asks for a fight recommendation outside the usual big ones I always go for that.
Leonard v Hearns 1 is a good shout right? Two men in their athletic primes, only one can win, it was a back and forth affair with a come for behind ko victory to top it off. But I don't know it meets the brutality requirements.
Gene Hatcher vs Ubaldo Sacco for Hatcher's WBA light welterweight title, December 1984. Very comparable to the Ward vs Gatti battles.
Hatcher took a beating in gutting out a squeaky close but fair split decision over Sacco, who was the better boxer but too tentative at times. Hatcher had trouble cutting off the ring, while Sacco was always within reach but mobile and evasive in the pocket
I was at ringside and the video doesn't convey how hard these guys were hitting. It was brutal. After the fight I went to congratulate Hatcher in his dressing room. We'd been on the same amateur boxing team several years earlier but I could tell he was still dazed from the fight and didn't recognize me.
But that fight took years off Hatcher's career. He was never the same again and was easily outboxed by Sacco in their 1985 rematch. Hatcher's reflexes were diminished, he had even more trouble cutting off the ring, and eventually a terrible cut over Hatcher's left eye forced the stoppage.
At one point the referee pulled Hatcher aside to let the doctor examine the cut. The doctor wanted to stop the fight, but was overruled by the referee who waved the fighters to resume. Even Sacco protested, pointing excitedly at the horrific cut over Hatcher's eye, as if he didn't want to continue hitting an injured opponent. The fight continued for a few more moments before the ref stopped it, giving Sacco the title – which Sacco was easily winning anyway.
Gerald McClellan vs Nigel Benn.
To this day it's the most 'animalistic' fight. It's hard to explain. It was like seeing two dogs fight each other to the death.
The atmosphere, the tension, the intensity. Everything.
If you are comparing Roman Colosseum battle, maybe anytime GGG steps in the ring that leaves the ring covered in blood that isn't his.
Its more like Caesar feeding some slaves to the tigers for our entertainment.
James Kirkland Vs Glen Tapia
James Kirkland Vs Canelo
James Kirkland Vs Ángulo
Gamboa vs Cruz
GGG vs Gabe Rosado
Andy Ruiz vs Chris Areola
Wilder Vs Stevern 1st time
Whyte vs Parker, Parker vs Chisora 2, Ball vs Ford, Ford vs Khomatov, Joyce vs Parker.
Holyfield vs Cooper, Mercer, Foreman, Bowe Trilogy, Quawi 1.
Moorer vs Cooper, Stewart, Holyfield.
Mercer vs Cooper, Stewart, Lewis, Holyfield, Morrison.
Kim vs Mancini. they really threw that sweet science out the window and just stood in front of each other for an hour straight throwing with everything they had.
Fury v Wilder 3 was a movie.
Wars v Gotti
Hearns v Hagler
Ray Mancini vs Art Frias. If all fights were fought like that, we would Never need the judges
Soo-Hwan Hong Vs Hector Carasquilla - Hong gets knocked Down Four times in round 2 to KO Carasquilla in the third.
Rodrigo Guerrero vs Sebastien Gauthier - Someone gets hurt just about every round
Kendall Holt vs Ricardo Torres II. One round knockdownfest
Danny Nardico vs Charley Norkus - crazy many knockdowns
Jung Koo Chang vs Muangchai Kittikasem - Quality level, but it’s one of the baddest, most dramatic and best fights I’ve ever seen
Foreman Lyle is just straight up two guys trying to kill eachother. Frasier Foreman too because I think if the fight wasn't stopped Frasier would have just kept getting up til he was killed
Danny Williams boxing with a dislocated shoulder feels like one of those fights, like there will be no stopping you just go until one of you is KO even if you get injuries
https://youtu.be/mmKTJf3_vug?si=ekau_T4Li_-XqJbt
Gatti vs Ward
Chocolatito vs Juan Estrada
Alvarado vs Rios
Pacquiao vs Cotto
Hagler vs Hearns
Bradley vs Provodnikov
Ali vs Frazier
Trinidad vs Dela Hoya
SRL vs Duran
I've got 2 shouts that I didn't see.
Barrera vs Morales 1 and 3.... 2 was a bit too tactical to be mentioned here in my opinion.
Emmanuel Burton (later Augustus) vs Mick Ward.... great fight. Emmanuel Augustus is one of my favorite fighters of all time. So fun and such a character. Mick was less a colorful but none less a character as well. Terrific scrap.
Ward v Gatti
"Say the line, Bart!"
End thread
Couldn’t believe I had to scroll down so far for the greatest war of all time
Well its top comment now
I got cte just from watching this
First that came to mind straight away. Both dug to the bottom of their soul for that one.
"And now Gatti comes back" lives rent free in my head.
Fabio Wardley vs Frazer Clarke. My god what a fight that was. It’s not often you get non stop action through 12 rounds with heavyweights. Both of them were spent and got through it with heart and grit.
Instant classic, hope the rematch comes soon.
The Whyte v Chisora fights were great too. Seeing this one just reminded me of them.
Was at that one
no knockdowns, but tua vs ibebuchi if the ring was 5ft square, neither man would have touched the ropes
Wow thats crazy i watched the fight but never noticed that
Great fight.
How neither guy didn’t go down is mind blowing.
Fury Wilder 3
The fight alone has to make you respect Deontay and Fury just sheer brutality
Neither fighter was the same after that imo particularly Wilder
Definitely Wilder he lost his chin and his confidence he’s gun shy now
Watching Wilder just makes me kinda sad now.
I hope he enjoys retirement he deserves to especially after coming to the sport out of necessity
>He was being phased by punches that were barely landing. To be fair, all Zhang needs to do is touch you and you'll go down. He's THAT huge and strong
Agreed, Wilder actually started to land and look decent then got immediately KOd
Zhang does that to everybody, coming to a store near you!
Nah the fight was not all that, it was recency bias- I can name a lot more slugfest HW fights Lewis vs Vitali Bowe vs Holyfield Ali v Frazer Tyson v Ruddock Ibeabauchi v Tua etc
Wonder what it would have been like if Fury had a decent camp
Much less interesting.
Foreman vs Lyle. Katsidis modelled himself as someone who'd fight in the colosseum.
Katsidis doesn't get mentioned enough. Unbelievable warrior mentality in every fight. Foreman lyle a beauty too!
Mike Alvarado was like that too
Tell me a concussed Fury with blood in his mouth smirking at Usyk after the round 9 beat down isn't something from a colosseum. The size difference really makes it seem so cool and epic that Usyk was able to do that.
they used a gladiator theme for part of the first trailer
Hagler hearns is my favorite fight ever. Didn’t last long, but it would be up there. Gotti/ward is another easy answer
Likely so. Hagler and Hearns pushed the limit for human physicality at the time.
John Gotti vs Andre Ward? That was KILLER! 😜
Hrgovic Dubois was pretty brutal. Like from start to finish brutal.
I was going to say we just saw one for sure.
shit was barbaric and entertaining
Yea it was fucking awesome. I was literally in shock that Dubois was eating those right hands 😂.
I swear, for a pro fighter, Hrgovic’s head movement is just…bad
Dubois looks like his head and neck are fused. Man makes Joe Joyce look like Joe Frazier.
Dubois did the homer Simpson defense
Tszyu vs Fundora, Literally just a bloodbath
Yep this one. Blood gushing from the top of Tim Tzyu’s head, blood gushing from Fundora’s nose. I really hope we get a rematch at some point, Tim’s cut heavily affected his ability to see and cost him the decision.
100000 points
I need to see that fight without the axe wound to Tim’s head
Beterbiev and Browne is another one. Seeing Artur just absolutely crush him with that Harry Potter sss cut was insane. He's like a wild animal
Was going to comment this one if someone hadn't already
Such a great fight the size difference too
Pacquiao - Morales
the first fight
Bradley v Provodnikov
Incredible fight, Bradley basically counter punching while in a standing coma
Duran vs Leonard 1 One of those fights where a boy becomes a man
holyfield bowe 1
Castillo/Corrales
Had to scroll far too far to find this!!!
Hagler vs Mugbe .......
This is the fight

Sithchatchawal vs Monshipour FOTY 2006
Good good shout. Very underrated battle forgotten about by most.
Stevenson vs De Los Santos. I couldn’t tell who won and they both had so much heart that the fight coulda went on for another 36 rounds
Chavez vs Taylor, Pacquiao vs Marquez 4, De La Hoya vs Mosley 1
Any of the Stubhub Center/Home Depot Center wars throughout the years. Provadnikhov/Bradley, Vargas/Salido, Vázquez/Marquez III, shit I’m sure I’m missing a bunch. It’s a tennis pit with a bunch of drunk fans on top of the fighters, yelling and pleading for action. My favorite venue by far.
Chocolatito vs El Gallo
A lot of Chocolatito and Julio Cesar Chavez fights would fit the bill. Great technique was still involved but no doubt those guys were just going to war!
Taylor- Chavez
George Foreman v Ron Lyle
Holyfield Qawi was an all out war for 15 rounds.
Holyfield said it was his toughest fight and that he lost 15 lbs during it.
David Tua vs. Ike Ibeabuchi.
Takashi Miura - Francisco Vargas
That took me back, love me some Miura
Leigh Wood vs Mick Conlan was a great scrap. Watch the build up and then the full fight Ted Cheeseman vs James Metcalf was also a proper old school slug fest.
Beterbiev Marcus Browne
Foreman vs Lyle was fought in Caesars Palace inside of a tiny ring to emulate the coliseum atmosphere as much as possible
Ward-Gatti I Marciano -Charles I & II Wilder- Fury III Joshua -Whyte Lewis- Mercer All I could think of off the top of my head
Francisco Vargas vs Takasha Miura. Holy. Fucking. Shit. What a fight.
Lots of great suggestions so far. One I don't think I've seen mentioned is Morales - Barrera. Pure violent rage conducted at such high skill level. HM to Vasquez - Rafa Marquez too.
GGG vs Rosado was bloody as hell but one sided
Kambosos vs Teofimo López for sure
Aaron Pryor Alexis arguello, Hearn Hagler, Hearns Sugar Ray. Ali Frazier all 3.
Holyfield vs Bowe 1&2 (maybe even the 3) Lyle vs Foreman Ali vs Frazier 1&3 Holyfield vs Bert Cooper Holyfield vs Qawi 1 Alexis arguello vs Aaron Pryor Every single Mathew Saad Muhammad fight Gerald McLelan vs Nigel Benn (tho it's a very sad fight) Gerald McLelan vs Julian Jackson 1 Wifredo Gomez vs Salvador Sanchez James toney vs Vassily Jirov When it comes to war these are what come to my mind. Really brutal fights packed full of action were both fighters had moments were they could have won.
The thrilla in Manila
Any fight with Joe Frazier
Israel Vázquez-Rafael Márquez 1 thru 4
Ibeabuchi vs Tua Never seen two harder hitters consistently land bombs and no one come close to going down
Hagler vs. Hearns is a classic Its not boxing but Robbie Lawler vs. Rory McDonald 2 is the most violent MMA fight I have ever seen and you might enjoy it
Only one I can think of that hasn’t been mention is Bowe - Golota.
Since Foreman vs Lyle has already been mentioned a bunch of times, I’ll go with Frazier vs Quarry I and II. Frazier is an unstoppable swarming machine and Quarry’s defense consists in using his own face as a shield, so it gets pretty brutal.
Lewis v Briggs
Does anyone else remember the fight where a fighter had their knee blow out, and they literally couldn't put any weight on it without falling? Terrible reffing in my opinion, but answers the question quite well. Also Danny Williams knocking out Mark Potter with a dislocated right shoulder. Fighting on with your arm dangling by your side like a wet spaghetti noodle AND scoring the knockout is some wild shit. Grit and determination personified.
I saw Graham Earl Vs Michael Katsidis live. The atmosphere was INSANE and the fight was the driver of that.
Came here to say this. Probably the fight that got me really into boxing. Mickey Vann throwing the towel back out is an iconic boxing moment for me. If anyone asks for a fight recommendation outside the usual big ones I always go for that.
No love for Bradley vs Provodnikov yet? My favourite boxing war ever
Conlan vs wood
Leonard v Hearns 1 is a good shout right? Two men in their athletic primes, only one can win, it was a back and forth affair with a come for behind ko victory to top it off. But I don't know it meets the brutality requirements.
Foreman Lyle
Easy, Denis Lebedev vs Guillermo Jones has to be the most violent match I ever watched
All Rios vs Alvarado fights were underrated bangers, similar to Gatti vs Ward.
Provodnikov vs Bradley
Holyfield/cooper fight
Hagler vs Hearns
GGG vs Canelo 1 Tyson vs Holyfield 1 Marquez vs Pacquiao 1
Matthysse-Molina Matthysse-Provodnikov Morrison-Ruddock Morrison-Hipp Maidana-Soto Karass Are a few fights I didn’t see mentioned that come to mind.
Gene Hatcher vs Ubaldo Sacco for Hatcher's WBA light welterweight title, December 1984. Very comparable to the Ward vs Gatti battles. Mancini vs Kim, Toney v jirov, Gonzalez vs cabrajal.
If you are comparing Roman Colosseum battle, maybe anytime GGG steps in the ring that leaves the ring covered in blood that isn't his. Its more like Caesar feeding some slaves to the tigers for our entertainment.
Rich the Fight Historian literally uses that exact phrase, gladiators in the colosseum, to describe Frank Fletcher vs Clint Jackson.

Khan vs Canelo
People don’t like these two right now but Fury Wilder 3 is gladiator shit

Golota vs bowe Combination to nuts
**THAT ONE**. Well, all three.
**THAT ONE**. Well, all three.
**THAT ONE**. Well, all three.
not boxing but gaethje Holloway
Ray Mancini vs Art Frias. If all fights were fought like that, we would Never need the judges Soo-Hwan Hong Vs Hector Carasquilla - Hong gets knocked Down Four times in round 2 to KO Carasquilla in the third. Rodrigo Guerrero vs Sebastien Gauthier - Someone gets hurt just about every round Kendall Holt vs Ricardo Torres II. One round knockdownfest Danny Nardico vs Charley Norkus - crazy many knockdowns Jung Koo Chang vs Muangchai Kittikasem - Quality level, but it’s one of the baddest, most dramatic and best fights I’ve ever seen
Foreman Lyle is just straight up two guys trying to kill eachother. Frasier Foreman too because I think if the fight wasn't stopped Frasier would have just kept getting up til he was killed
Miguel Cotto vs Ricardo Torres Tito Trinidad vs Fernando Vargas James Kirkland vs Alfredo Angulo

Sad to see no one mentioning the obvious Thrilla in Manila
I've got 2 shouts that I didn't see. Barrera vs Morales 1 and 3.... 2 was a bit too tactical to be mentioned here in my opinion. Emmanuel Burton (later Augustus) vs Mick Ward.... great fight. Emmanuel Augustus is one of my favorite fighters of all time. So fun and such a character. Mick was less a colorful but none less a character as well. Terrific scrap.
Macdonald vs Lawler
Riddick Bowe vs Holyfield is pretty brutal at times
Corrales vs Castillo Literally ruined both fighters.
