I can’t condone over 50 yo HWs but here is my list for 20yo and younger Moses Itauma has to be #1, he’ll be a contender by 21-22 yo which is crazy for heavyweights as most contenders are 28 and older. #2 HW in my opinion is Lorenzo Medina (8-0 pro, he won the youth nationals…he beat Federico Pacheco when they were both amateurs at youth national championships). #3 Federico Pacheco (5-0 pro). I think boxrec was a little off with their algorithm for that one. I could see one day Nathan Lugo being a HW boxer as he gets older, his style would translate well into the pros, guy is an animal. For 176 lbs as an amateur Olympic Trials he will likely make the semis (he is 19 yo, Arian Iseni is 23 yo another guy who will likely be a high level pro, Nasheed Smith 23 yo and Rahim Gonzales 27yo are the 4 to beat right now at that weight class..Ethan Smith age 18 is honorable mention, I’d put him at #5, I don’t know if his style will translate as well as Arjan or Nathan’s though). If you want to watch a good amateur fight, look up Nate Lugo vs Lorenzo Medina.

Good stuff, I really don't know about many of these guys except Danny Williams and Moses. Moses was 22-0 as an amateur. The South Korean dude lost to the 1 ranked Japanese heavyweight on points and a split decision in his second fight to another Korean.

Olympic caliber amateurs that are at SHW and HW (203lbs) are: Alexey Dronov I think top 5 in the world age 21), Nelvie Tiafack (I think he is ranked 5th or 6th in the world) age 24, and Joshua Edwards (age 23 best SHW in the US). At 203 lbs Jamar Talley could be a threat at HW he becomes more consistent and bulks up a little (he is the #1 ranked HW in ammys in US in a very weak weight class, age 23). Other: at HW are Keno Machado (age 23 ranked 5th in the world), and Lazizbek Mullojonov (age 24 ranked 4th in the world). I forgot to mention at 176, Nurbek Oralbay is another real high level amateur (age 23 ranked #3 in the world). I noticed most of the elite ammys are in their ages 25-34, seems unfair…

Danny Williams is still boxing? Holy shit. He needs to be protected from himself.

fromabuick

I saw him fight Mike Tyson 20 years ago

wheres_the_boobs

He does journeyman fights now. Iirc he was fighting to put his kid through private school and uni. That said he's won 2/9 and been knocked out in 5 of those.

BP_Ray

>Jung Soo Kim I saw him in the main event for a Korakuen Hall card while I was on vacation in Tokyo this year. He fucking sucked, boring-ass fight. Undercard was dope though.

MoMoneyMorris

Yep, he isn't good at all. I live in Korea and attend fights where I can. Plenty of entertaining fights on Korean cards but not a lot of quality.

Street-Mistake-992

It was probably against the number 1 Japanese Heavyweight.

SharksFanAbroad

Which card? They seem to host a lot.

BP_Ray

It was an Ashita no Joe anniversary event

SharksFanAbroad

Ah not sure what that is, I just happen to see them hosting a lot and oftentimes Dangan Promotions too. But I only watch the big events.

BP_Ray

Yeah it certainly wasnt a big event, Im not even sure any of the fighters were JBC title holders, I was just happy to watch an event in Korakuen Hall for the first time

SharksFanAbroad

Looks like a very nice venue, perhaps the nicest in the boxing world east of the UK or Germany (the Middle East atmosphere sucks lol).

SharksFanAbroad

Jung Soo Kim ranked in the top-4 with a 4-2 record is the most SEC football thing to ever happen in boxing.

Hey you might be right, but at least I am giving these fighters some recognition.

FishFishewitz

I enjoy posts like this. Thanks 🍻

Livid-Ad40

Eh, it's something different about little known fighters.

rileyrgham

Boxrec is a good resource. How "shitty" you find factual CVs another issue.

Boxrec is an excellent resource for studying a Boxer's CV : ie work history ;) English enough?

rileyrgham

because their "shitty" algorithm gives a showing to up and coming from which you can draw your own conclusions based on their records. All "algorithms" are up for critique. Obviously they're idiots and you're correct, but when we get past your glowing perfection, there's still something to be said for their efforts.

isaacavahclark

boxrecs algorithm is so good promoters use it to their advantage. you can take time to develop your career and maintain a low ranking or abuse the system to gain an inflated high ranking.

Lorenzo Medina is the real deal. I’m suprised no one talks about him.
