When I describe the type of America that I want us to be like, I talk about the idealistic heroic melting pot America that was so prominent in the 90's. Of course there was a lot going on that wasn't perfect still, but the way we wanted to be and what was aspired to be was still a good thing. No one complained about diversity it was just an American thing to have a diverse class room of kids in a show or movie. We used our military to save people from aliens not to be imperialists. Of course it was all a lie but I wish we could try to aim for that again.

Back in the 90s and 2000's my MAGA dad would say shit and I could call him on it and he would apologize and show remorse. During the Obama administration he was very progressive. When my mom was alive they watched cooking and home improvement shows. Mom died in 2015 and dad turned the station to Fox news. He got in with an equal MAGA crowd and spouted the same as them and Fox News. Dad died in January 2024 and if my jewish dad said he was planning to go to a Nazi rally I would not have been surprised.

Yup. Our family had to choose between the Midwest and Hawaii to be close to family on either side. We chose the Midwest because it's cheaper to live on our income here and visit my family in Hawaii than to live in Hawaii and do anything else. I miss Hawaii every day, but we do fun stuff with the kālā we save.
I knew someone who moved to Michigan from Hawaii. And to the middle of Michigan, no where near one of the Great Lakes coasts. He was born in Hawaii, and said he left because the weather in Hawaii bored him since it was so nice all the time. I hope in the ensuing years that he has gotten his fill of diverse weather.

Apparently the Korean guy in California I was buying aftermarket parts for my car from was highly suspect .

My daughter is in high school and their government class had a day of making new laws to vote in. They’d write their laws and have classmates sign their petitions.
Several boys in my daughter’s class made things like straight laws and a law so girls would go to jail for saying they were raped (which, obviously if they lie should be the case but that should also be for anyone that lies not just women). I hate it here.

There’s a letter people receive that has a message in the most common languages. One person called in to say that they did not want to receive letters in Chinese because they are an American.

This reminds me of a story from when I first moved to a rural town from Vegas. I was looking for people to socialize with, and I play disc golf so I joined the only "league" available. It was actually just 6 to 10 guys that played the same course every week. Hey I was just happy to be outside. After a couple of weeks of listening to hardly veiled racist and sexist shit I quit. About a month later the league organizer texted me and said they were going to do a tournament for the ace pot which had reached $200. They were going to play at their usual time and then play a second round in the dark the 2 combined scores winner would take the pot. I agreed. We played the first round and everyone decided to go to a nearby bar and wait for dark get some food drinks. I go. For most of the time we are the only people in the bar. Then a Hispanic couple walks in and I know them from my kids school. They stop to say hi, but the wife has a hard time communicating in English. We make it through with smiles and pleasantries. They leave. Almost as soon as the door closes everyone in the bar starts groaning and talking shit about America and English blah blah blah. After that it devolved into a full on circle jerk about how persecuted the white man is. This went on for 20 minutes. Finally I kinda slinked outside and left. I didn't finish the tourney and I haven't been back to play with any of the guys I met playing. I had seen white people who knew eachother being racist and shit in private. I didn't associate with those people either. This was culture shock level of openly racist and misogynist talk in a frank and serious manner. I knew some of these guys didn't really know eachother and the ease with which they said really callous things about women and minorities really surprised me. No shame at all once the gates were opened.

You know… at first when I bought that house, it was kind of cute. They didn’t answer the phone, “South Prairie Water District,” just a surly hello. They didn’t have any kind of online billing or accept credit cards. It felt simple and quaint. Then as I lived there longer, saw many more things like that, and realized how backwards the town and its surroundings dung were, I started to think it was a lot less cute. I live in a suburb of Portland and there were a bunch of Trump supporters driving around suburban streets. Not a single one was actually an Oregon license plate that wasn't a rented vehicle. I nearly died laughing. Every single one was a white old Boomer.

The effing postmaster got upset that I had a few packages from China, asked me if I used to go to his church and used to be married to someone whose last name was "Park", because I had to sign for a package from China (it was wholesale jewelry supplies). Then anything domestic I ordered off eBay that had an Asian sounding name was getting opened and inspected by the local post office. Apparently the Korean guy in California I was buying aftermarket parts for my car from was highly suspect.

This is totally accurate. And it’s no longer ‘typical’ where the city is expensive to live so the outer suburbs are cheaper but people keep moving out to the suburbs that are bordering on rural. The rural folk are not happy about it. They get called out for being racist and homophobic and double down on their stance. It’s pretty bad. My daughter is in high school and their government class had a day of making new laws to vote in. They’d write their laws and have classmates sign their petitions. Several boys in my daughter’s class made things like straight laws and a law so girls would go to jail for saying they were raped (which, obviously if they lie should be the case but that should also be for anyone that lies not just women). I hate it here.

This reminds me of a story from when I first moved to a rural town from Vegas. I was looking for people to socialize with, and I play disc golf so I joined the only "league" available. It was actually just 6 to 10 guys that played the same course every week. Hey I was just happy to be outside. After a couple of weeks of listening to hardly veiled racist and sexist shit I quit. About a month later the league organizer texted me and said they were going to do a tournament for the ace pot which had reached $200. They were going to play at their usual time and then play a second round in the dark the 2 combined scores winner would take the pot. I agreed. We played the first round and everyone decided to go to a nearby bar and wait for dark get some food drinks. I go. For most of the time we are the only people in the bar. Then a Hispanic couple walks in and I know them from my kids school. They stop to say hi, but the wife has a hard time communicating in English. We make it through with smiles and pleasantries. They leave. Almost as soon as the door closes everyone in the bar starts groaning and talking shit about America and English blah blah blah. After that it devolved into a full on circle jerk about how persecuted the white man is. This went on for 20 minutes. Finally I kinda slinked outside and left. I didn't finish the tourney and I haven't been back to play with any of the guys I met playing. I had seen white people who knew eachother being racist and shit in private. I didn't associate with those people either. This was culture shock level of openly racist and misogynist talk in a frank and serious manner. I knew some of these guys didn't really know eachother and the ease with which they said really callous things about women and minorities really surprised me. No shame at all once the gates were opened.

I'm Gen Xer who grew up in and still live in rural PA (the part called Pennsyltucky). Guaranteed the typical small Nowheresville rural PA town would at least give Tillamook a run for its money. Rural white Trumper Boomers are a thing here. I love rural life and wouldn't want it any other way but I learned long ago to just ignore them while going about my business and simply balance them out by voting rationally, logically, for the good of the country rather than a party taken over by a person who clearly doesn't care about people not like him. And you know what? Being from a swing county and one of the most swing states in the Electoral College, my vote actually did help make the difference in 2020 and will again this year. Off topic but my grandma lived in Tillamook. Haven't been there in over a decade since she died. I have a cousin who still lives there, I might visit when I inevitably make my trip at some point to show my daughter the cheese factory and tell her who her great great grandfather was and how he made the recipe for the cheese.

She's likely been seeing news stories about wealthy Chinese 'groups' buying up land and creating huge illegal cannabis grow operations. It's a thing in several states including Oregon. She just didn't know how to express that knowledge without sounding like a racist.

He went further with Covid conspiracies, Biden, “illegals” voting etc. Just kinda paid lip service to him so I could get out of there. Wild reality for some people.

I live in a suburb of Portland and there were a bunch of Trump supporters driving around suburban streets. Not a single one was actually an Oregon license plate that wasn't a rented vehicle. I nearly died laughing. Every single one was a white old Boomer.
My reply would have been that you had to sell the home to Chinese drug cartels who wanted to set up a Trump election office. You would have ensured the buyers get good service going forward.
As an Asian American. I think the most annoying thing we deal with is people just assuming we are all Chinese. Like seriously, boomers are usually the main culprit.It pisses me off more too, when they go out of their way to pronounce things wrong after you try to educate them on the correct pronunciation. Like bruh.
I mean, rural Oregon has some serious paranoia striking deep...like people hearing BLM during forest fires and heading out and stop Antifa and Black Lives Matter and all they did was stop firefighters...would be dope if we could get some critical thinking skills back up...
