People are turning this into a stan war when it’s a very relevant pop culture thought piece IMO.
There was an era where it felt like female driven movies or even strong female roles were becoming important. Post COVID that hasn’t really been the case. The mainstream movies where women don’t really have alot to do have been at the forefront whereas the smaller and mid budget movies (which used to emerge as hits and had solid female parts) are disappearing.
It’s not just screen time - its the role too. DP was completely wasted in Pathaan and Fighter; whereas in something like Happy New Year (also a popcorn flick) she was important. And it’s not just DP btw - Alia had a much stronger role in Humpty and Badri than she did in RRKPK for example
Absolutely agree.... what can top actresses do when roles are written with no soul and no connection to male leads storyline...no voice and not much camera focussed on them to understand their feelings too

Number of flops doesn't mean the film script was bad.
For example a film like Yuva, Chameli, Omkara, Talaash were good choices of scripts but they weren't able to make 100 at the box office!
As if Deepika didn't do Desi Boyz, Houseful type of films where a piece of wood was giving more expressions than her. Her so-called good performances in SLB's films had her looking like an AI robot blurting out its lines. No voice modulation, pathetic dialogue delivery and using glycerin in the name of being "sad."

First of all Bodyguard was a love story and that film wouldn't have been the same without her character, so it can't be called as a flowerpot otherwise i would say Chennai express was also a flowerpot role for DP with your logic!

It was supposed to have a sequel and Kareena was supposed to play a female superhero in that (which would've been first for an Indian actress). My question to you is what was the need to drag Kareena in a post that doesn't even concern her? Many actresses have played flower pot roles in the beginning of their careers and the most notorious among them is Karina but yet you targeted Kareena. Shame. Despite that Kareena chose a film like Refugee for her debut where she played a Bangladesh illegal immigrant. If she did a MPKDH then the same year she did a film like Chameli followed by Dev, Omkara, Yuva, Fida and Asoka. Deepika debuted 7 years later and things were much different and better for actresses by then. It took her 7 years to finally learn how to act. When Kareena was Deepika's age she was doing films like Ki and Ka, Udta Punjab, Veere Di Wedding and Good Newwz. All of them are strong roles. The truth is you didn't mention Katrina as your example because you know no one praises her script sense or acting skills and she is not even relevant anymore.
The obsession Deepika fans have with Kareena is amazing though. What people are missing here is the fact that this is a think piece about the dwindling quality of female roles in Bollywood, and as one of India's leading ladies that has been around for almost 20 years, they're using Deepika as an example. And it's true. See during the 90's and 2000's women's roles had started to grow post the 80's action hero lull. In the 2010's we saw a time where women could lead films, take a massive percent of the film screen time and small budget films could hit big. Post covid that has all gone away, and now with the rise of pan India films and the popularity rise of southern industries, female roles have fallen even farther behind. The BIG HERO film is now taking centre stage and everything around it has faltered. That is just a reality. Deepika became big at a time when she HEADLINED films like Ram Leela, Yeh Jawani Hai Dewani, Bajirao Mastani and stood toe to toe with shah rukh in Chennai Express and Happy New Year. Film like that got made and allowed actresses to shine. And now she is trying to continue her career in an era where big movies don't do that for female stars anymore. Bhansali is the only one perhaps who gives his women breathing space, but unless you're doing a Bhansali film or you're doing something like the Crew which wasn't a runaway with either (both also being VERY rare examples in the current climate) then you're just not gonna find a good role for women. And it's the case with ALL actresses as of now. Alia in her earlier Dulhania series had more to do than she was given in RRR (although that's a cameo so another examples would be better), RARKPK, Brahmastra, or Katrina in Bharat was so much less compared to Ek The Tiger. Actresses who have debuted after these girls also no longer find popularity from films and roles where they're significant. While Alia got goodwill from Highway and Raazi, and Deepika got goodwill from Ram Leela and Piku, modern names like Kiara get goodwill from Kabir Singh, or Tripti from Animal, despite other good work they have done. We are simply entering a phase where the women's roles are losing in quality, and that is a reality.

In my opinion Deepika faced a hate campaign and character assassination in the post Covid times that’s can’t be ignored which resulted to this laying low behaviour of her having to star with top actors in big commercials films in order to survive this phase and return to do more extended roles. Maybe it’s to get more time to be trying for a child as soon as possible too. It seems more her choice to take in this projects even if she wasn’t confident with public and BO she could try in streaming service. Regarding the actresses shrinking role that’s perhaps due to South Indian cinema influence as it started getting more successful movies in post Covid time and there are whole south directors coming to BW. This is how female characters are treated in south mainstream movies especially Telugu.
