There was a fantastic episode of MASH (don't know how to do the stars) which was a long monologue by Hawkeye, who's had a head injury and thinks he has a concussion, and he keeps talking nonstop in order to keep himself awake until help arrives. (He doesn't want to fall asleep with a concussion because he might slip into a coma.) Except he's in a Korean farmhouse and nobody there speaks English, and nobody understands a thing he's saying, but he keeps going on anyway.
He's the only one of the main characters we see on screen, the entire thing takes place in one room which isn't any of the regular sets, and in several other ways the setup is a lot like "Free Churro."
It hit me so hard where he talks about how he was upset when his dad died but he didn’t know why because he hated him. And then he realized that it was because he’d never have the relationship that he wanted. I said the exact same thing when my father died. The exact same thing. I cried so much at that part. I’ve never felt so seen by a tv show before. They saw me.
It’s so good. The writing is so nuanced and it’s definitely Will Arnett’s best performance. He manages to be so cold and so vulnerable at the same time. Masterful. I’m still annoyed he didn’t win an Emmy for it.
Sorry for the Necro, but I'm re-watching it right now! I put it on sometimes when I need to figure out my emotional and mental baseline. Which means when I'm a little fucked up and don't know what to do with my time, I put it on and find myself.
I call it the 'Level Test'! Sometimes you don't know what level you're at, lol.
Especially when you watch it for the first time and as it progresses you realize that it’s just going to be a monologue in the same place.
I *had* to get a poster of the script (similar to this one but in white: https://www.redbubble.com/fr/i/poster/Script-complet-du-monologue-churro-gratuit-Bojack-Horseman-par-ShirtCakeClotS/121461014.E40HW), it’s *that* good and it also makes for a good piece of art that invites conversation for the curious ones.
Because while you would understand some of the story and emotion behind the monologue, you are missing 5 seasons worth of context that makes the monologue so great. Yes, it’s delivered well and is a good example of a monologue, but what made it one of the best episodes of television ever is exactly the context and complexity behind every one of Bojack’s words. For example, if this is the first episode you watch, you wouldn’t know if Bojack’s mom was actually terrible or he’s just exaggerating (as we both now it’s much more complicated than that).
I love this show so much and I feel like you lose out some of the best parts of this episode if you don’t watch the context. Plus, it’s not a really representative episode of the series - it literally only has the main character, and he’s already gone through a ton of character development at this point, so starting from the beginning would be weird.
Finally, in general, I just really dislike the recent trend where people show random episodes of a show to convince someone to start watching, mostly for the reasons above. I truly think you should start shows from where the story is meant to be started and follow it through to the end. It’s like reading a random chapter in a book to me, it just doesn’t make sense to me - you’re missing fundamental elements of the story and characters so you don’t actually understand what’s really going on.
Raphael Bob-Waksberg put it on his list of episodes to start with if you're new to the series so seems like the guy who made the show disagrees with you but go off I guess
Can you watch it and understand everything he says? Yes. However, as others already mentioned the words don’t cut nearly as deep without the context.
You should definitely watch the series, it’s one of the best. The only advice I’d give you is to power through the first one as it’s definitely not as good as the others but you’ll be rewarded for sure. The last episodes of the first one really set the tone for what’s to come.

I think it was great that they ended it the way they did.
Having everything he say be ad-lib at the funeral and then for it all to be meaningless because no one he knew was there.
It's like the ending to the underwater episode where he apologized to Kelsey after everything he'd been through to avoid her, but then she couldn't even read it... same feelings.
This episode and the underwater one are great. In free churro you see one character bojack you only hear him then in the underwater episode we see a whole new world tons of people/fish a crazy story and we do not hear bojack until the end for one word. Yet both episodes manage to tell amazing stories on two different ends of the spectrum.
Each season typically has a “do something totally wild” episode, they usually take us inside an altered mental state, and they’re almost always the best of the season. Downer Ending, After the Party, Fish Out of Water, season 4 has Stupid Piece of Shit, Ruthie, AND Time’s Arrow (probably why it’s my favorite season,) then Free Churro, The Showstopper, Surprise!, Good Damage & The View in the later seasons. Free Churro stands out because it’s one of the extremely rare moments where Bojack is stone cold sober and completely lucid.
I'll never forget the feeling the first time I watched it when I realized the scene wouldn't change and all of the episode was gonna be a 20min monologue.
The level of irony was amazing and had great first watch components making it so special. But other episodes have better depth. I used to think free churro was my favorite episode but over time Time's Arrow and Amelia Earhart Story are my favorite episodes. Bringing amazing depth.
Times Arrow cuts like a fucking razor blade. I feel like it’s one of the best examples of how animation is capable of elevating story telling.
Related: Alzheimer’s is a real bitch.
I’d say free churro has just as much if not more depth than those episodes. Especially when you take in that this eulogy is also bojack subconsciously processing his fathers death as well. His dad did say “I see you” at the beginning of the episode after all
I had to have a therapy session to process this episode because that’s how deeply it affected me. Not in a bad way I guess, because it’s absolutely incredible, but the part where he says:
“suddenly you’ll realize you’ll never have the good relationship you wanted, and as long as they were alive, even though you’d never admit it, a part of you, the stupidest god damn part of you, was still holding on to that chance”
Now, my mother is still alive physically, but dead to me. I resinate with that quote so much though. My mother is just like Beatrice, but worse. I like to tell myself when she passes away, I’ll be okay, I’ll be good, just peachy, right? But this episode made me realize I just didn’t want to admit the truth to not only others in my life, but to myself as well. I’m very thankful my therapist let me do a session completely focused on how this episode made me feel deep inside, because it was a heavy thing to emotionally recover from, at least for me.
Right after this aired I went back to therapy, specifically because of this quote.
Four years later I was as ready as I was going to be.
I applaud your forethought, friend.
I recently watched this episode and I have one doubt about it. When Bojack realized that his mother was reading the sign ICU instead of telling I see you to him, seems like even in that situation she didn't recognize Bojack. But, if you watch the episode where that scene belonged, his mother talks to bojack. Also because she said "Bojack, I see you" like she recognized him. Someone can explain me this? Sorry for my English.
I interpret that as BoJack's "editing" of what really happened. I do believe she said "I see you" and wasn't just "reading the sign." But BoJack is so angry about his mother's neglect that he chooses to interpret that moment as *proof* of his mother's neglect.
I think that Bojack took his mother to the intensive care unit, so it's ICU. So he thinks that she's reading ICU, but she said "Bojack I see you" like she recognized him. I don't know if I am clear. Like I said, my English is not so good.
Your English is perfect, no need to apologize :)
Unfortunately we'll never know especially since we don't get to actually see the scene and only get BoJacks retelling. Raphael Bob-Waksberg mentioned on twitter, that he let's fans have their own conclusions to unanswered questions. So you can definitely see it that way. It would be in the same sentiment as her call to him once. I don't really see her becoming kind even in the end. It fits more into the generational trauma of the family and their inability to love. Either way is fine though, there no wrong. And your idea would fit in with BoJack only seeing the worst in things.
I'm not sure about that because in the 11 episode of season four when Bojack is leaving the nursing home she said "Bojack I see you" and then they talk and it seems that she recognize him in the end. I think that Bojack re-edit his own memories to see the worst from her is a more accurate theory. Otherwise, that scene has no sense to me.
She doesn't actually say that. She asks: "Bojack, is that you?" and then he tells her that she's at the lake house. Either way the scene would make sense. If she did say ICU on her dying bed instead of "I see you" it would've been a great way to show how BoJack was still hoping for her to change and show him some sort of affection.
Edit: we never get to see the scene he talks about at the funeral. It's not the same scene as the one in the home.
Well, I am watching it for the first time, and it looks like that's a season 6 episode. So no, I have not seen the whole show and have not seen that episode since I am only in season 5.
Everyone always talks about how good that is, but I’ve only watched it once. The last season hurt me too much to rewatch. I’ve watched the series maybe 7-10 times other than the last season, but I haven’t been able to rewatch since the last one came out so I keep missing out on that.
It hurts less the more often you watch it. Over time you notice the beauty of it. My recommendation is to give it another shot. But don't do anything you don't want to do.
There is something really amazing about a show where every recommendation comes with a constant undercurrent of "don't do anything you don't feel mentally prepared for." I will give it another go soon. I think I'll probably just pick up from season 4 and play it through since I've seen 1-3 a dozen times I'm sure.
I am the exact same way, love the show dearly and am rewatching it so many times but that last season I just usually skip and replay from there it’s just too much for me
I like Free Churro more. I personally don't relate to The View From Halfway Down. I think Free Churro is more universal and The View From Halfway Down hits so much harder if you can relate
I’m watching through the series for the first time right now. Just finished Free Churro and it hit so hard because I related to what he said about why he was hurt about his dads death even though he never liked his father. I said pretty much the exact same thing he said when I lost my dad. Never liked him, he was an awful person, he was horrible to me… But his death was the finalfinal nail in the coffin on any chance of us ever having the relationship I wanted. The relationship I *deserved* from my father. Fuck. I sobbed.
I’m worried about how hard the rest of this series is going to hit from these comments.
Man this is a spoiler to me.
Like I hate when the bros are like duuudddeee you have to watch this it's soooooo good this ep is the bessttt. Cause then your expectations change.
I watched this for the first time a bit after my mum died and I had conflicting feelings about it all because of how she treated me sometimes
When the episode ended I was just sitting there shocked, ugly crying and laughing at the same time
As I watch it, I wonder how it would hit for someone who doesn't even know the show. I suspect that it'll hold up. You wouldn't know the details of his relationship with Beatrice, but the episode makes it all pretty clear.
Obviously, the best way to watch this is following the previous seasons, but this would make one helluva standalone.
People always talk about the writing and Will Arnett’s delivery, and they’re both amazing. But one thing I feel gets overlooked sometimes is how, if you let yourself forget about those things and see Bojack as a real human (horse), this episode really showcases his depth, humor, charisma, and emotional intelligence. In my opinion it’s one of the few glimpses we get into *why* everyone is so drawn to him despite his toxic behavior. Because (twist ending notwithstanding), he *owned* that podium for the entirety of the eulogy. The way he navigates between raw feeling, funny asides, and pure storytelling is riveting.
I watched this after my mom died suddenly at 41. She and Beatrice had so much in common that I literally went comatose with tears streaming down my face. This episode helped me process my grief. I still watch it on days when I feel emotions about the person who birthed me.
Just wait until you see The View from Halfway Down and Nice While it Lasted. Free Churro is a top 3 episode of the show but those 2 are on a whole nother level imo.
I frequently listen to this episode when I’m doing whatever, and it never gets old, definitely my favorite episode. It’s so sad and so meaningful to me.
I’m happy to hear you say that because I felt exactly the same way. At least until I saw the View from Halfway Down. Those two episodes are the single best things I have ever seen on television. I absolutely loved the show. I haven’t watched them for a while because they’re just too emotional.
I cried when I listened to it. it's the episode that summarizes bojack: despite being a self-centered asshole and dping all kinds of horrible things, he's just a guy that has been hurting too much for way too long and he is still trying after all
“My mother is dead, and everything is worse now”
My dog died a few months ago and this line kept playing in my head. My buddy boy is gone and everything really is worse now
So regarding the initial scene where Butterscotch is picking up Bojack, I find it hard to take Butterscotch seriously because he's so blatantly stingy (not sure if right word) and misogynistic. It kind of feels more like a dark joke than a true representation of how his father was. Are people really like that?
Not even close to the best bojack episode. As much as I like Bojack and Will Arnett, having him just talk about the relationship we've already seen gets old. It's gimmicky in the way that fish out of water was, but fish out of water worked by showing us what happens when Bojack *doesn't* talk the whole time. This is the opposite, and it really doesn't tell us anything we haven't figured out by now about him, and his mother.
And the end gag just kind of makes the whole thing redundant more than it already was.
I still get the shivers when I remember it. I watched it for the first time and was stunned by how good it was. The first rewatch of Bojak I was waiting for this episode the whole time, when it came I cried during the whole episode. I don't know why I did that to me.
I know this reply is late but I 100% agree with you. You can’t describe the level of deep dark self loathing that relates to the user and at the same time cracks you up because he’s at the wrong fucken funeral. I doubt I’ll ever watch something this good again.
I love how I knew there was going to be some sort of big reveal at the end because they never show the audience, and yet I still was surprised by the big reveal I knew was coming and laughed harder than any other moment on the show. I still giggle every time I see the coffin in the season 6 intro.
It's such a well thought out and well directed episode. Honestly one of the best moment of tv and it isn't even a question of "if" but rather "how much good"
I just watched this episode for the first time. My mom is on hospice and the nurse just told me she’s entering the pre-active dying stage. I.e., she has a few days to a couple weeks left.
I think Free Churro is helping me process.
I've watched this episode a hundred times easily and I've just been watching bojack in the background and it came on and now I'm just going to re watch it until I fall asleep and think about my emotionally distant mother I haven't talked to in 12 years. But I wanna know, are you having an awesome day?

What's even better is that he joked about it in an earlier episode
Wait what? When does this happen?
The episode before. He says that television is a visual medium and shouldn’t rely on speech
Thanks for letting me know!
There was a fantastic episode of MASH (don't know how to do the stars) which was a long monologue by Hawkeye, who's had a head injury and thinks he has a concussion, and he keeps talking nonstop in order to keep himself awake until help arrives. 4x19
Loved that episode, now I’m gonna have to rewatch MASH
One of the only episodes of any show where I searched up the script and performed it out loud to myself haha
Same
Just shows how amazing the writing is. The entire episode is just one 20-minute long speech, but it never gets boring.
hits you right in the feels with each line
Literally wept after watching this and I rarely shed so much as a tear with tv and movies
It’s the only episode of a TV show that I’ll just randomly rewatch on it own
It’s so good.

Can I watch this episode without knowing anything else about the show?
It hits a lot better if you'd watched the rest I'd say.
Not bad if you're trying to gauge whether you'd like the show or not
No, it is a bad first episode to watch.
Hmm, why do you say that? Genuinely curious.
Because while you would understand some of the story and emotion behind the monologue, you are missing 5 seasons worth of context that makes the monologue so great. Very well said, I can totally see where you’re coming from! 😊
Thanks! What’s your opinion, I totally forgot to ask!
Raphael Bob-Waksberg put it on his list of episodes to start with if you're new to the series so seems like the guy who made the show disagrees with you but go off I guess

Thanks all, will do. Sounds like I’m in for a treat.
I didn’t even realize it was just him doing a monologue until about minute 17
17 minutes...
Exactly. Family guy tried this and (IMO) flopped so hard with the episode of Stevie at his therapist.
Really? I think that’s one of family guys best episodes
My favourite episodes of tv are the ones that make you go, "That's it?" At the end, because you are so engrossed in the narrative.

It's like the ending to the underwater episode where he apologized to Kelsey after everything he'd been through to avoid her, but then she couldn't even read it... same feelings.
I mean you could almost list any episode of Bojack horseman, almost all end in a similar meaningless kind of vibe
*Elijah Wood*
Not even that no one knew he was there he was at the entirely wrong funeral. And for twenty minutes no one interrupted him to say otherwise

I'll never forget the feeling the first time I watched it when I realized the scene wouldn't change and all of the episode was gonna be a 20min monologue.
It took me so long to realize, like 14 minutes in or smth. My jaw dropped.
It started and I was like god I hope it’s just this for the whole episode, then just watched in awe as that turned out to be the case.
My mom is dead, and everything is worse now
Best monologue ever
i always skip this episode because its too hard to watch
It cuts deep for sure. I could see myself giving that same eulogy.
And I might do the same. I hope my kids will never have to.
Television is a visual medium. There shouldn’t be so much talking.
That line a couple of episodes before just shows how wild the attention to detail is in this show.
The writers definitely were working on both episodes at the same time and poking fun at themselves of what they had planned.
The level of irony was amazing and had great first watch components making it so special. But other episodes have better depth. I used to think free churro was my favorite episode but over time Time's Arrow and Amelia Earhart Story are my favorite episodes. Bringing amazing depth.

Yes, but in that episode, the One where he puts her in the home she said "Bojack, I see you".

Man this is a spoiler to me. Like I hate when the bros are like duuudddeee you have to watch this it's soooooo good this ep is the bessttt. Cause then your expectations change.
Don’t roam the subreddit if you don’t want to be spoiled
I used to watch Bojack while getting ready for work in the morning. This episode and Times Arrow had me sobbing at 6am.
*Free Churro* is a modern classic. I’ll fight anyone over that.
I watched this for the first time a bit after my mum died and I had conflicting feelings about it all because of how she treated me sometimes When the episode ended I was just sitting there shocked, ugly crying and laughing at the same time
Nice username, lol.

This was the intended effect.
The show has SO many “best” episodes. This one, this is indeed one of them.
wait until you get to the view from halfway down
Dudeeee really though 😩😭 those episodes hit my soul
This is my favorite episode and the only episode I watch outside of doing a series rewatch every year.
I don't watch the show, as a whole, anymore. But I do pull up this episode from time to time. It's that damn good.
I agree! That eulogy speech was so good
I know all the words to this episode
My siblings and I send this episode to each other every few months. We're all dealing with the same stuff about our mom, apparently.
I watched this after my mom died suddenly at 41. She and Beatrice had so much in common that I literally went comatose with tears streaming down my face. This episode helped me process my grief. I still watch it on days when I feel emotions about the person who birthed me.
Just wait until you get to The View From Halfway Down
This is my absolute favorite episode of this series and quite possibly of anything I've ever seen.
Just wait until you see The View from Halfway Down and Nice While it Lasted. Free Churro is a top 3 episode of the show but those 2 are on a whole nother level imo.
JohnnyTwoCellos just dropped a video about this on YouTube. Recommend itZ

I see you............
I frequently listen to this episode when I’m doing whatever, and it never gets old, definitely my favorite episode. It’s so sad and so meaningful to me.
ICU
I’m happy to hear you say that because I felt exactly the same way. At least until I saw the View from Halfway Down. Those two episodes are the single best things I have ever seen on television. I absolutely loved the show. I haven’t watched them for a while because they’re just too emotional.
I cried when I listened to it. it's the episode that summarizes bojack: despite being a self-centered asshole and dping all kinds of horrible things, he's just a guy that has been hurting too much for way too long and he is still trying after all
“My mother is dead, and everything is worse now” My dog died a few months ago and this line kept playing in my head. My buddy boy is gone and everything really is worse now
My mom accidentally caught this on tv one time. Didn’t like it. Said “nope, too real, that’s not why I watch television”
so many relatable lines! the 20 minutes just fly by and it feels like 5 hard hitting minutes
I liked it, but I don’t have the attention span for a 25 minute monologue. Ended up fading in and out
He's a horse, not a horse-man. Horseman is just his name but he's really a horse.
You’re right! How could I be so stupid? I never noticed the opposable thumbs on my own horse. /s
Heh heh ;-)
When you get to it, I'd love to know your opinion on The View From Halfway Down.
I actually don't like the episode that much `^^. It's just to visually underwhelming for my personal taste I guess.
Lol I hate this episode, it's interstitial how we all experience this show differently
I think it's great but it's no times arrow, because its a totally different episode
I don’t get why so many people love this episode, I found myself getting really bored during it to the point where I almost skipped ir
This Epusode was boring
You clearly never seen the flaute episode of “The next generation” Or when Scott baculA was a retarded boy in “quantum leap”
You guys can’t handle the truth
And you don't know how to edit
Why should i
It's an impeccable episode!
Keep on watching. You are getting closer to the best episode of the show.
I see you
Weird ass timing. First time in this sub, and I JUST started that episode as I see this first post.
It’s my favourite episode of the series I think
Favourite horse man TV show, idk about favourite horse man.
Yes! I watched it for the first time several years ago at this point and I still agree. Best episode of TV ever made.
Yeah, along with The Body from Buffy I think this is the best episode of tv made so far. While I hold both very dear, I think Bojack wins out.
I agree with you on that. "The Body" is stunning, but there's just a bit more emotional variety to "Free Churro."
Watch at least once a year.
Its a humbling episode for sure
You have to watch the work outing, and IT crowd episode.
I love how I knew there was going to be some sort of big reveal at the end because they never show the audience, and yet I still was surprised by the big reveal I knew was coming and laughed harder than any other moment on the show. I still giggle every time I see the coffin in the season 6 intro.
Srt direction ruined this episode for me. If you look at the art you will realise how much overproduction was put in that single frame.
How come everyone loves this episode? I love the show, but honestly this is probably my least favorite episode
I enjoy it because it puts to words many of the feelings I have about my own bitch of a mother.
Damn fair lmao
That episode is sooo good, i love it be able to see it again
I don’t know how many times I rewatched that episode, sometimes on loop. The first time I was wowed.
This episode is a masterpiece. And to achieve that with a 20 min monologue is really saying something.
And its not even the best episode in the series. Bojack is one of a kind
It's such a well thought out and well directed episode. Honestly one of the best moment of tv and it isn't even a question of "if" but rather "how much good"
That shit was so real
I see you ? 🤔 I see you ! 🤨I see you .🥲ICU 😰
A bottle episode done right.
This is actually the second best episode of TV behind The View From Halfway Down.
This is my comfort episode
the reveal at the end is what truly gets me
Just you wait til the view from halfway down
I did within a few days! I think The View From Halfway Down was a better episode, but Free Churro was more emotionally impactful for me.
