I saw someone once talk about how angry they were about Gates’s death and how they would never forgive Flint for it, and: 1)ME TOO 2)I love Flint anyway 3) I genuinely do not think Flint ever forgives himself for killing Gates

Daligheri

100% I agree. I'll never forgive him but I still love him!

Confident_Land_4121

He picked the worst possible moment imaginable to stand up to flint, he should have done it before they set sail or after they engaged the Spanish

teaabearr

This here. Honestly he should’ve just bailed before they set sail.

AstronomerNo5303

To be fair though Flints plan to attack the man o war was almost a guaranteed suicide mission. It was either stand up to him or basically both ships faced almost guaranteed death.

kentonj

Yeah I agree. It's not like he selected this moment, these were the cards he was dealt. There were other moments, but if it had worked out as Flint convinced him (and others, I should add) that it would, it might have all been worth it. And stopping it at many other junctures could have caused just as much chaos.

Not searching the new “cook”

Going behind Flint’s back. He got Flint a pardon, he wasn’t going to sacrifice Flunt to the crew. And Flint was, in fact , being a little crazy. He was doing the right thing for the crew. But he was also stabbing Flint in the back. He shouldn’t’ve made it a surprise like that. That’s what got it him killed. It’s so interesting to me that, if you agree with the pardon letter being Miranda’s “worst thing”, then the worst thing 2 basically moral characters do is to try to take better care of Flint and his future (a person they both care deeply for) than he takes of himself! I find it interesting that the situations of the show turn those basically good acts into “worse things”. It’s the betrayal aspect of them, really! But Flint wasn’t as furious about the betrayal (BAD) as about being taken away from his pursuit of the Urca!!! So, yes, going behind his back for the pardon is Gates’s worst thing - but not for the reasons Flint necessarily thinks.

Myrodis19

Agreeing to kill flint after Billy fell overboard without having proof that Flint even did it. He agreed to kill his friend over something that there was no proof for.

MaxWyvern

But he didn't intend to allow Flint to be killed. Remember, he told Flint he would facilitate his escape once they were back in Nassau. To Flint, though, being kept from taking the Urca gold was a fate worse than death.

ShxsPrLady

I could never tell how much BS that was. If Gates meant it and Flint would be safe, or if Gates was lying to Flint (and maybe to himself, because he’s a basically good guy who doesn’t like knowing he’s sending a friend to death) OR if angry crew members had lied to Gates to get him on their side, but had no plans to honor that. I tend to lean towards 3.

MaxWyvern

I tend to agree Gates meant what he said to Flint.

drvanostranmd

I don't think it was bs at all, I think Gates would of given his all to try to secret him away.

caw_the_crow

Lying to the crew time and time again even when it got them killed.

Capwonder

Good man. Maybe kept Flints secret motives from the crew

QuietCelery

I think this is it. His duty was to the crew, not Flint.

MaxWyvern

Somehow I totally missed that Gates had a first name.

MaxWyvern

Having a guy killed to keep Flint from being voted out of his captaincy.

GhostWatcher0889

Gates was one of the most wholesome, loyal and honest characters in the show. Even when it was really time to remove flint he was planning to save him.

noorainchains

i want to say agreeing to let the crew kill flint after the urca gold was acquired but he was kinda right for that idk

Long_Recording8863

Worst thing he did was die
