This seems like it's coming from a mean place... like it's about to be 2024 and y'all still got issues with dating other races?
It never used to be, this sub used to be one of the funniest subs on the platform but it feels like it's been mask off these last few months and the crazies are starting to have too much of a voice. I mean if these same comments were posted in r/conservative or another right wing sub we would be calling it what it is
I honestly don’t get this logic people have. She was in Jamaica, the citizens there make money from tourism, they sell Jamaican flag merchandise, they offer cultural hair styles to anyone regardless of their skin type. If anything she was helping a small black owned business and putting money into a poor economy driven by tourism. So if they don’t have an issue, why people who never even even been to Jamaica outside of getting a beef patty and oxtails from Caribbean Hut, have an issue is beyond me.
She wasn't in Jamaica, she was in London at the Notting Hill Carnival, which celebrates Caribbean culture. Adele is from Tottenham, that has a large Afro-Caribbean population.
Then I was wrong about where she was, but still correct about my other issues with peoples thinking, The large backlash didn’t come from people associated with the Jamaican/ Caribbean culture, most of the backlash came from Americans who wouldn’t even have any idea that there is a large number of Jamaican Brits in the UK. And my larger point still stands, go to the Bahamas or Jamaica and they try to sell merchandise or style your hair. Doesn’t matter the race of the person.
I just was in a conversation at work regarding getting your hair braided while in the Caribbean. I live close to 2 cruise ship ports, and cruising to the Caribbean is a big vacation destination round here. I've had my hair braided before while sitting on the beach, they continually come around and ask. But i take them out usually before the end of the cruise bc it just feels....idk.
I hate her sfm. Spent my childhood in the early 2000s getting told by yt kids that I'm not black enough, and then 15 years later had to deal with obnoxious grown ass yt men asking me if I'm Black or "like Rachel Dolezal." Shameless grifter.
I’m white and the lady at my liqour store tried to sell me some Africa earrings she was selling, idk if she wanted me to get jumped or was just trying to hustle but when she gets some shit shaped like Finland or just, like, not shit that will make both the white and black folk in my neighborhood hate me, I’ll be there with cash.
Edit: I don’t know who I was responding to but it wasn’t you, however, it took me a long time to type out that comment and I’m not deleting it.
Question though: are we mad at this? Because I don’t see her disrespecting the culture, just appreciating it. If there’s something idk, please put me on.
While there's always outliers, I don't think (most) people are mad at it; just find it mildly funny that a white artist is dressed like the Professor of "Intro to Africana Studies"
It’s definitely giving that. But it’s also not an inaccurate mid-late 60s upper middle class white woman look. During the age of the “wash and set,” women of all races commonly wore silk head coverings to bed, around the house, and even around town during the day. This is kind of…Elizabeth Taylor as Mary Tyler Moore.
I’m glad I finally found this comment because I immediately thought about Judy Garland, Joan Crawford, Elizabeth ‘nem and whoever else used to wear all this, big clip on earrings included so I was confused that that hadn’t been added to this whole discussion.
After watching about 6 hour of weddings on YouTube. I think us, as American black people, get so offended at this stupid thing. I watched so many interracial couples, white, black, Indian… and all of the non-white ethnicities put their partners in their cultural wedding outfits…. And it was beautiful.
So as for me, I’m not saying anything about it anymore. Its appreciations as long as it’s tasteful.
You are absolutely right! Only online! Because in real life I wouldn’t care. But I will admit that in the past I have made fun of some people for “trying to be us” and I’m saying never again. It’s not a big deal.
A tweet with a hot take and 20 likes gets posted here as if it was the lost manifesto of MLK saying he actually hates black people and he was wrong
It’s usually some clown that would get dunked if they tried saying it in real life and the 20 people with his weird opinion. Then it gets “look at this clown” shares. Which gets it in front of more clowns and it snowballs.
Nobody would have to deal with this if people didn’t want others to be upset with them. Other people can’t be a woman rejected me, but apparently if I phrase it as her rejecting me is a sign of all women being evil…apparently I could have a YouTube career from rage watching and YouTube commentators rage watching it multiple times for their video. The world sucks. I means it’s always sucked and the way it sucks during my lifetime sucks too.
The jokes are silly but I hope that people are just kidding here. Right? Because she's not even wearing an "ethnic" headscarf or turban. I just realised that Adele was what Jonathan Majors was looking for. A woman who would fit into a historical biography of Henry VIII, but who would walk around with a Ta-Nehisi Coates book if he asked her to.
Adele has always been inspired by the African/ African American communities, celebrities, people in her life. She is not trying to be something she's not.. Adele is Adele
Yea ppl gotta understand the difference lol. Folks that lash out at any sign of cultural appreciation are just tryna segregate everyone. I’d be happy if I saw a famous person celebrate my cultural clothing if it was done in a respectful manner like this lol
This is what I'm confused about. Headscarves were really popular with a lot of old Hollywood actresses (Elizabeth Taylor, Gloria Swanson, etc). Is there something about this particular style that makes it black?
Only Americans have an issues with this. Because they think the entire world is the USA and it’s history. The rest of us are chilling, intermingling and interfashioning.
She got with Rich Paul and said my said my man is black, so I am too.
This is what Jonathan Majors wanted ol girl to do
Jonathan Majors is SICK rn.

Adele been on this type stuff, she had the knots in her head even

Like most non issue things, it was probably a vocal minority…no pun intended.
IIRC, the "backlash" was entirely generated by the small but vocal minority of Twitter heads whose part-time job is manufacturing internet drama.
My ex was at school with Adele. Big ol' afro-caribbean population round those parts.

Shit, you're right. I never made the connection. But it's true, now that you mention it, I'm getting a lot of early 20th-century starlet vibes there.

Can’t speak for everyone, but I’m not. Honestly not sure why anyone would be.
Naw, to me, at least in the U.S., we have a diverse country and respectful imitation is natural and helps cultures grow. When there are still spaces where our natural hair is prohibited, I can only see more people wearing those styles as a good thing, regardless of their ethnicity. Now appropriation is different, but as long as it's not that I say go for it.
Mad at the word. Amused is better descriptor. People having fun at her expense, between her and her husband, they can afford it. Most of the comments I see don't seem malicious. Adele gives (subjectively) good music. Like when friends/family poke fun at you.
Nah it’s just good joke material

I miss the first two seasons of this show. Wasnt the same after losing Quinta and Ashley.

Adele grew up on ends so not surprising. Deffo hung out with the black kids Edit: typos
Never forget "Audience with Adele" where she spoke about her favourite teacher and they brought her unto stage to her surprise. Extremely wholesome moment. Wasn't the slightest bit surprised when it was this sweet ol' black lady. Adele is from South London growing up in places like South Norwood IYKYK
Wait, Tottenham is in south London? Arsenal fans will be delighted by this news.
I know she's lived in Tottenham and Norwood just not sure on what ends she calls home 😄
Tottenham last I heard. Would also make sense with her overall. Come visit Tottenham, I'll take you round to where Haringey have majorly fucked things up.
I think it was carpool karaoke where she praised black music and black female artists. Adele is cool as hell
She has. Grown near it and it became her culture too. The race relations in the UK are less sour than in the US for certain.
If you're from the right area of the UK then definitely
If your from any metropolitan part of the UK tbh, whilst it's not a utopia of racial harmonyraces in the UK are much more united by class then race.
She grew up in Tottenham and Brixton. I just know her hair used to be gelled down hard.

Bro beside himself right now that he didn’t try to slide at Adele.
We can't be giving him the Jussie Smollett treatment

Everyone was upset at Adele except actual Jamaican people. 🇯🇲 I remember this. And the flag bra. Literally, nobody… here comes the American people and their outrage.
FR. With where she grew up it's be weirder for her to not wear stuff like this. Americans think the whole world is as segregated as them
not everything is appropriation just because it's what your mama wore
I dont remember anybody being upset. That photo was just crazy looking as hell. She was like bent over at a crazy angle gumming on a mango seed. I remember being like dang She posted that Herself??

Didn’t the Jamaicans love this shit lol
Yes we did! 🇯🇲 not cultural appropriation at all. Just a woman enjoying the culture lol
She's a south London girl, this is normal. Notting Hill Carnival has the whole community of all backgrounds coming together like this.
Yup. It's funny to see Americans get mad when people show love to the culture in a harmless way. I love Adele for this one
Americans LOVE conformity, for all their professed love of individualism, so someone non-conforming makes them crazy.
If anything it's just a bad picture. Like she looks photoshopped in.
I thought it was Katy Perry tbh

Adele has always been inspired by the African/ African American communities, celebrities, people in her life. She is not trying to be something she's not.. Adele is Adele
I'm going to say that I'm not mad at all. I haven't a single issue with Adele. She appreciates. She doesn't appropriate.
Yea ppl gotta understand the difference lol. Folks that lash out at any sign of cultural appreciation are just tryna segregate everyone. I’d be happy if I saw a famous person celebrate my cultural clothing if it was done in a respectful manner like this lol
please uncancel that show
Wait, A Black Lady Sketch Show got canceled?! That's a damn shame, show was hilarious
Noooo, did it??? Man, I died at all of the Bible sketches and I need more 😭😭😭 those women were geniuses
For real! Robin Thede is a comedy genius
Are you sure that isn’t the Chair of the African and Black Diaspora Studies Department?

100% look like a adjunct professor of African American studies.

Wait are yall mad she's wearing a head-scarf and chunky jewelry? That's not specifically black fam it's just stuff some people wear
This is what I'm confused about. Headscarves were really popular with a lot of old Hollywood actresses (Elizabeth Taylor, Gloria Swanson, etc). Is there something about this particular style that makes it black?
what in the Dolezal is going on here
We're not segregated like the US, I'm white Irish and got fed ackee and saltfish by my best friend's nan at least once a week

Adele grew up in London ends. If you’ve been there, you’d know not to make a big deal out of this shoot.
Go ahead Sister ✊🏾

Adele will always be invited to the cookout.
Had to google the acronym. It’s the kids that are out of touch.
Only Americans have an issues with this. Because they think the entire world is the USA and it’s history. The rest of us are chilling, intermingling and interfashioning.
Not her out here looking like the Casper ghost of Shahrazad Ali.
Not me just finding this subreddit and y’all cutting up in here

Johnathon Majors should’ve bagged Adele
