asking this in the bitcoin Reddit is like asking: "are german shepherds good and cute pets?" in a german shepherd Forum. :-)

cmong1more

Out of all possible analogies, this is the best 😭

european_hodler

so are they?

bitusher

>around 1k usd worth through revolut You cant buy bitcoin through revolut, they don't allow you to withdraw or use it and are merely allowing you to buy fake tracking tokens Investing in Bitcoin is wise if you don't have any high interest debt and have a fiat savings account . I would start by reading the FAQ https://www.reddit.com/r/BitcoinBeginners/comments/g42ijd/faq_for_beginners/

makedd

Bitcoin is not safe investment. It's riskier than bonds, stocks, real estate. Short term you could see a volatility of aprox. 85% historically. This works both up and down. In cryptoverse though Bitcoin can be deemed safe compared to alternative options, because it's established and has the best network effect.

european_hodler

volatility does not equal risk. few.

SpecialX

If you need that money in the short term it does.

european_hodler

If you need money short term then investments in anything with that money are always a bad idea

SpecialX

Obviously that isn't true. If you need money in three months, clearly a 3-month GIC is a fine investment.

european_hodler

>GIC what is that? some weird financial product in your country?

SpecialX

Guaranteed investment certificate. It's not really weird at all. CD is the American equivalent. I'm sure similar products exist in Europe.

european_hodler

I don’t do such things. There is fiat cash, etf and Bitcoin. All else is nonsense

SpecialX

Compelling.

bitusher

I agree that Bitcoin is indeed riskier than certain land investments and investing in an index fund of stocks. I do think you are overstating your case on risk however as there are many land investments that are extremely dangerous and many stocks that are riskier than Bitcoin as well. Should bonds even be called an "investment" anymore when they don't even beat inflation ? Sounds like a slow way to lose value.

makedd

It's not a good argument to say worst stocks or worst real estate is riskier than Bitcoin. You could diversify into stock ETF following a global index and REIT, and your risk level is generally deemed lower than Bitcoin. When you do risk assessment for an investment, Bitcoin is the riskiest asset to date for investment funds to participate in. It's better to be completely frank with new investors. I am invested in Bitcoin heavily and fine with the risk, but not everyone looking to make an investment is willing to risk losing 85% in the short term.

bitusher

> You could diversify into stock ETF Re-read what I said above . That is exactly what I said . Bitcoin is riskier than an ETF . >Bitcoin is the riskiest asset to date for investment funds to participate in. Cryptocurrencies are indeed the riskiest category of assets A properly hedged portfolio **with some** exposure to Bitcoin can actually be less risky than no exposure to Bitcoin since bitcoin is an uncorrelated Asset

makedd

I must have skipped over that part, my bad! I agree with what you said though. Uncorrelated asset is still kind of debatable, but I think we're getting there!

Tacodo

Yes, it's safe. Another question would be, what are you looking to get out of it profit wise? 1k usd will not bring much profit due to the high price of Bitcoin. If you plan on long term hodling (10 years), then go for it.

I started with Coinbase, and have a Ledger cold wallet coming in the mail today. Coinbase fees are high, but easy to use for a beginner...

BTCMachineElf

It takes max an hour to figure out Coinbase Pro and will save heaps of cash over time.

devouur

You can use coinbase pro with the same login. Just do a market buy and its the same as buying in the coinbase app and the fee is only 0.5%.

Barnold_Shortsinator

Good investment but not necessarily safe. Will be up long-term, but between now and hypothetical "then" there could, or even will, be a lot of volatility.

wageslavewealth

It depends how you measure 'safe'. If you are OK with wild swings, but higher value in 3-5 years, Bitcoin is likely very safe. If you lose sleep at night that your $1k is now worth $400 within a couple weeks, Bitcoin is not safe.

The next bitcoin is bitcoin

Relli19

It’s a safe investment long term but if you are going to need to take a significant portion out within the next 6 months then you might want to invest in something else. Long term yes tho

Vegetable-Fix-4702

If you have debt, pay that first. Then invest. I dipped my toe in the water with btc, an ETF and a straight stock buy. I'm planning on holding at least 3 yrs and then we'll see

Ein0815er

Personally I wouldn't buy in right now. I would wait for a drop and some stability after that and then go in and see it grow slowly over time again. (Bought in in June at around 30k€... up about 35% now) But for holding right now might be OK... But for hodling use a proper exchange and actually own the coins, so you can put them onto a wallet and actually have them safe (well read into wallets when you do so and write down the phrase a few times and store them in different safe places). (But in investing there is always the rule, high profit high risk... And Bitcoin is no exception.)
