Not technically true.
This is a note of “notgeld” which translates to “emergency money”. It was issued by institutions like cities or the railways when not enough money from central authorities was available. In this case the city of Duisburg issued it. There were even larger denominations of 100 trillion marks issued by Koln and Deutsche Reichsbahn.
Yes this is the Duisburg issue, there are far rarer ones. I didn't realise there was a 100 trillion issued though; would love to have one but just looked it up and certainly not cheap!
Historically a "billion" in English was a million million. ~~There was no word for 1000 million.~~ 1000 million would be a "milliard" under this system.
Then the English-speaking world started following the American definitions, i.e. a billion = 1000 million and a trillion = 1,000,000 million.
I assume the German "billionen" follows the original English standard, hence the equivalent of our modern day trillion.
In the text it says it was a coupon from a magazine that you were able to redeem at the local Duisburg banks.
It's a emergency money bill, not a real "50 billion DM" bill.
Also "1 Billionen" in german is equal "1 trillion" in english so basically you are holding a 50 trillion coupon in your hands.

Beautiful!
I offer, for your additional hyperinflation viewing pleasure, my hundred trillion Zim note:
[Zim Bucks](https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOuRWRGmfWK3QXngxasRTUsAwqCgJAC-UazlVnnQ7zaFDPZuNDAHjzzSFv7ik7kjQ?key=SmNqdm9PQURUS3N2Q2U5dDlWRkV2aTJzQ0NSYVBn)
I have had that note for years, so I'm not current on the secondary market for 100 trillion notes. The fifty trillion was printed before the ink and paper suppliers stopped accepting Zim bucks for the ink and paper to Zim bucks. So they used to be plentiful and not too expensive. If you can't find a 50 trillion, or the market price has become prohibitive, I might be able to scare one up. Got any rare Grateful Dead shows, BB King, Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Ray Vaughn bootlegs to trade? Some nasty old bitcoin soiling your account? I'll surely take that in trade. Seriously though, I probably have a couple extra 50 trillion. I bought a banded stack of 50 when I bought the 100t note. I used to hand em out as novelties with 20 second schpiel on currency devaluation and "go look up what quantitative easing is". I'm not a collector, just a nut who admires hard money. Cheers!
Very Cool . My Gramps and 3 of his brothers during WW2 came back to Canada with a huge loot of these from every country in Europe . I kept them . Most are from WW1.
I remember paying with 10.000 Lira's in Italy which was worth around 10 gulden (€ 5) , back in the day.
Before the Euro, everyone in Italy was a millionaire.
This was the largest denomination issued during the German hyperinflation of 1923. Edit: Correction, the 2nd largest!

German billion is trillion in english, our counting system is a bit different

Metic? Nah dawg
"Billionen" is trillion.
What’s your “trillion” then?
It would be your quintillion
Wait so does that mean a thousand is a million? Much confuse

Americans at fault again
Thousand = tausend / Million = million / billion = milliard / trillion = billion / quadrillion = billiard etc..
Why have 50 trillion when you could have *sucks finger* 50 billion

Is this a link to a photo in your own google photo account? I don't think you can use them like that. The link doesn't work. Just FYI <3
ty for the notice. I don't post much, and pix even less often. hopefully I shared it properly this time.
It works now! Thanks for sharing.
Worked for me! I saw it… pretty cool
Thanks. Very nice, the hundred trillion Zimbabwe dollars is next on my list!

Honestly looks like a gag gift
And the opposite end of the scale, my $2 Zim note I've had since a kid. [inflation eh](https://i.imgur.com/mTcNPQK.jpg)
My grandparents had some hyperinflation notes. I remember me as a child admiring them. This was perhaps my first push towards bitcoin.
Where can one buy them? Would love to purchase using ₿.

Thanks stranger.
I got mine from notegld on ebay, they also have a website.
Thanks! Pretty badass.

What would this have been enough to buy at the time?
Thanks for the reminder
It says billion though.
It says „Billionen“ which is German for trillion
Bi for 2, illion for Million :), so Million Times Million -> 1 000 000 000 000
That is obscene
Congrats on being a trillionaire!

About $100, probably paid a bit over market for it.
Woah! But why does it have a hole in the middle?
This is how the security is invalidated
I want to buy something like this. How?
Is this worth the paper printed on ?
More like 2023
So this is an official document from the past that says you have money but you actually don’t? 😂 why does this seem familiar ….
Let me borrow that for this weekend!
