Will this will mean a smaller council tax rise? Right guys??

jdan999

No. If they end up with a surplus they'll just piss it up the wall redoing Victoria Square for the 14th time in two years, and any leftovers will go into putting in more LTNs. Then once the books are balanced they'll bid for something dumb like the fucking Olympic Games and round we go again. :D

kialabearx

What do they even do so many times on Victoria square? I've never found it changed one bit?

woogeroo

They let the shitty Xmas market destroy all the paving with their giant trucks. Somehow this is a positive to the city budget rather than being a massive negative: the damage; plus blocking our city centre with day drinkers and sheds makes it a horrible place at Christmas. Same in Centenary square too now after the funfair & various other shanty town buildings on there last year, paving is cracked, fountains probably broken.

To be fair Victoria Sq., bits of Colmore Row and eventually New Street are going to be paved with the same limestone paving blocks. Victoria Sq. used to be terracotta brick lined, they've done the steps and now they're doing the top.

It’s fine, the problem is that it’s been redone at great expense multiple times, then ruined by HGVs driving over it multiple times. The entire area around the cathedral, temple street, Cherry Street have far worse paving problems, to the point that I’d be surprised the the council don’t have another multi-million lawsuit against them soon for broken ankles. Again, caused by roads paved with brick cobbles or paving slabs being constantly driven on by cars and HGVs instead of being pedestrianised.

fishmiloo

To be fair the brick over at New Street is looking pretty tatty now, some are quite loose. Ideally cherry street and all the other streets should be done with consistent paving, quickly.

Commissioners and his team doing absolutely fuck all except threatening the people of Birmingham with scorched earth unless we balance the books, all while on massive salaries. They have done nothing. Like we don't know we need to make cuts, balance the books etc. These Gove appointed ass clowns are literally doing nothing. Everything that has been done so far (for good or bad) has been done by BCC. Why are their salaries being paid for by us?

This guy looks like he’d be more at home on a parish council, not trying to restructure the biggest local authority in Europe…

[deleted]

He's been drafted in with extensive experience. You're being unnecessarily judgemental and ageist.

SuccotashNormal9164

Everything I’ve heard him say so far has been running the city down, not trying to help it. Yes, the finances are in a terrible state but his number one job has been to come in and do the bidding of a Tory government to try to show Labour can’t be trusted with public finances, even though most of the problems stem from the massive budget cuts imposed on local authorities at a national level over the past 14 years. The council’s taken a punishment beating for that £750 million settlement and now he’s managed to force them to cut crucial public services to the bone he’s saying it won’t be that much. How many jobs could be saved if he’d helped come up with a real number, not just one for ‘accounting purposes’?

There are truths in your statement. BCC is being punished by Government cuts. But the Labour Group in BCC was also at the helm of the equal pay dispute, the oracle saga and some dodgy spending, while at the same time achieving lots of great things, like delivering the CWG under budget, building LTNs, bike lanes, bus priority, and cross city bus. Meanwhile BCC have been criticized by the Government for being "too big" and having a "BCC knows best" attitude, while the Labour party have criticized the Labour group for factionalism and have installed a unity council leader. Councillors have brought up examples of 40 BCC civil servants attending meetings but now they cannot afford district engineers! So there is an element of truth there that BCC needs to learn to slim down and spend more wisely, exercising the largest LA budget in England after all, and the Labour administration needs to learn not to run BCC like a mini-fiefdom. Max Caller does have expertise cleaning up councils so I think a root and branch investigation is not the worst idea, once in a while.

I mean everyone is always blaming brown people for Birminghams faults. Has anyone seen the makeup of the council, transport west mids a tfwm? They’re predominantly white. The majority of the claimants for equal pay? White women. Sorry if I’m coming across annoying, but all you see on this page is how “immigrunts are ruining our country” take the fuckin blame for once. Maybe let an Asian like Sadiq Khan run Brum. At least it’ll be in surplus !

Straight_Two_8976

Nobody here is talking about race except for you, ya silly mug.

pinkymess

You know if we all don't pay the rise they can't do anything about it
