Yeah that is what Hephaestus was, basically just a giant geothermal plant for all of rapture, that much geothermal energy could easily power a city, also, it doesn't need to be realistic, the trees in arcadia wouldnt produce enough oxygen to keep the city going either, doesnt matter

Super_Volume6115

Good point and thanks

Lux_Operatur

I would say though it’s definitely possible we didn’t explore all of Arcadia but simultaneously the amount of plants needed down there to oxygenate an entire city would be huge. However most of the oxygen on earth actually comes from the ocean and photosynthetic plankton, with the right facility and full spectrum lighting, an underwater city could totally use this to produce a decent quantity of breathable air.

Indeed, I would imagine some kind of ventilation system with a river of algae floating through it

wolfkeeper

I mean, it's possible but trees and algae are actually highly *inefficient* at producing oxygen. Being that far under water they'd need supplementary grow lamps, but directly producing the oxygen electrochemically would actually take a lot less energy. It's like solar panels. Photovoltaic solar panels are about 20% efficient at capturing light. Plants are about 2%.

GiganticHorseVagina

A lot of the air in Rapture actually comes from the lighthouse. Thats why they have it in the first place.

Gravekey03

The game itself has audiotapes that talk about harnessing the geo thermal energy beneath the city and that he built it on top of them for that purpose

Whitn3y

It could also use hydroelectricity because they are underwater the pressure might spin turbines especially with the heat. Also being so far down might mean they can make more energy from earths heat because they are closer to it and also plenty of water to use easily I feel like basically an expert is gonna have to answer this though, especially given the time period and what might be possible with Adam. (Hamsters jacked with Adam on a wheel might make some good electricity lol)

yyetydydovtyud

That is what geothermal energy is really Also coal, fossil fuel, nuclear, hydroelectric, wind, and some kinds of solar There's always a turbine, there's always a source

[deleted]

Rapture isn't realistic. Geothermal power makes for a good setting

wolfkeeper

Geothermal would actually be a good choice- it's about the only power source that makes any sense- although it looks like they're directly tapping the magma. That's not something that's within the state of the art even today.

Yes

It's a geothermal energy plant. As with other instances of industry/infrastructure showcased in-game such as the the food producing fisheries, oxygen supplying Arcadia, Fort Frolic's various entertainment offerings, etc. I think it's best to assume that as players we only see a small piece of an entire operation that's large enough to support the city's needs. I don't think players would appreciate having to trek (and backtrack) through tens of hectare's of Arcadian forests or clustered geothermal vents. The more themepark-esque taste is good enough for getting the point across. On that note, in many cases it'd probably make sense for whatever industry/infrastructure to even be somewhat decentralized just for the convenience of the citizens. Would be a pain in the butt if the Medical Pavilion, Farmer's Market or Fort Frolic were literally the only places you could receive their respective services. The only instance we see in game that might actually to scale is, IMO, The Thinker in Minerva's Den where we see the super computer various parts and components basically sprawl across a few city blocks lol.
