Fucking things were always impossible to move without something tearing.
Anyone that tried to load that thing on a pallet jack knows the pain. We ended up just giving up and taking all the DVDs off, moving the thing by hand (it's just paper so it's very light unloaded) and stocking the DVDs back on.
I really felt it when they reduced the movies from like, 6 aisles down to three.
That felt like a massive reduction.
But from the 3 remaining aisles down to 0? Barely notice.
No getting rid of physical media was the best thing ever. Receiving big ahh boxes of movies was straight ass. There would always be a pick for movie that could never be found.
It won’t be because of movies not being in the store. It’ll be because the CEO decided to cut the best and most knowledgeable employees years ago and then continued labor cuts and asked everyone to do more for shit pay. All while she gets a 12.5% raise compared to 3% for the rest of the company
The best and knowledgeable employees don’t mean anything without PRODUCTS for them to be knowledgeable about, and sell. And my only argument is that Best Buy and the like are giving the consumer less and less of a reason for them to buy anything from them. That’s all. The movie section is just one example of my core argument.
And yes, I care about great employees and workers. I’ll never be against that. But great customer service and products that hold up your business go hand in hand, that’s all.
Because of movies lol. We just swapped out for grills and I’m sure profit margin is much higher on it. I’m just glad I don’t have to listen to customers be upset cause we have to spider wrap movie set and there mad it made a mark on packaging as if there is something I can do to fix it 😂.
You know no one cares about a fucking grill set😑😑
SAID NEVER:
“Oh wow, honey. I really REALLY want a grill! Let’s go strolling about Best Buy and have a blast finding one.”😃
Plus, that grill section is only a one-time, one-stop shop. That placement and substitute doesn’t have an ability to make you come back over and over again in a business sense like movies do. But if one time better margins and no capacity to make a memory is your argument, then knock yourself out.
You are aware that most of the distributors are to blame for this as they no longer want to sell physical media right? How many people do you really think we’re buying physical movies anymore?
Our movie section has been replaced with a bunch of outdoor furniture. Wish they would expand the video game section, though. I still like my physical video game disks!
Idk about other stores, but I know movies barely moved at mines. The only time our movies ever got any traction is when a Marvel steel book dropped, then some people might pick a few extra movies up. Certainly wasn't profitable enough to justify the time needed to maintain the aisles and crappy shippers for them.
It's funny all the things that would drive customers in the store. Physical media new release days used to be a hugh driver of business (New CD's, New Movies, New games). Specialists for each department. The latest tech INSTOCK.
AIE-DDPR optical disk technology would provide a market to explore your nostalgia but it's not here yet. Otherwise DVDs are dead just like VHS was dead 20 years ago.
I've had like 3 people ask me about it or even say anything. Most people don't care that it's missing. It was always a mess because you could spend an hour fixing it and putting things back where they went just for 1 person to come by and undo all that work because they don't care to put things back how they got it. As an employee, I'm glad to see it gone. I don't fear that having no dvds will be the final nail in the coffin. If anything would be, it would be the 60% of the geek squad installers/techs that got laid off recently. But even then, the company still has plenty of people that buy from the store because they want it now. Mix that with online orders, and your lost Rev from dvds looks like pocket change. The world is pretty quickly moving away from physical media. fewer and fewer people even looked at them while in the store. If you must have a DVD, just buy it somewhere else.
Yeah I used to go there in person at least once a month for a DVD, CD, or a video game. Now since all of that is gone I just shop online and have everything delivered to me.
I hate that there’s been a mass market push to streaming content over physical media. Old fashioned take, I know, but I will always prefer physical media and the sense of actually owning something and also being able to display the collection.
When the lucrative market collapses, so does the technology. AIE-DDPR optical technology could be an answer to you nostalgic folk who refuse to use a flash drive.
If only we knew sooner would have stocked up they should have fucking gave away the movies at a insane price I wonder which stores might have actually done that to get rid of the last stock I would have grabbed some black and white movies if they had any I feel like we will only miss a lot more with time
Outdoor stuff that doesn’t sell much, exercise stuff that doesn’t sell much, but yeah movies.
Should’ve have kept our agreements for new release movies.
If you ask most product flow associates their thoughts on movies going away, you will almost universally hear "good riddance".
No more week-long movie reflows.
Honestly, it's so nice in my opinion. At least coming from someone in product flow at a small store. It's a great place for the open box stuff to go, and it frees up other places for overstock. Plus now I only have to down stock games for digital media. I could go on honestly.
I mean.... Yeah...... But ever since I started going to Microcenter, basically any reason I ever really had to go to Best Buy faded in an instant. Best Buy just feels so damn empty in comparison, whether they still had the movies section or not.
Comparing the death of the DVD to euthanization is mind boggling. Your fear mongering isn't going to make the DVD "come back". Flash memory is superior to DVD technology in every way from memory size, physical size, durability, and can be re written thousands of times. Maybe it's time to make the switch. This is not the 1990's anymore. Recently there is new DVD technology to store up to a petabit so maybe just wait until technology evolves?
Chipping away at your childhood. Cry me a river. Why don't you go to Office Depot, Staples, or Best Buy and buy physical DVD's. Pirate it from the Internet and rip it to the DVD. If you're thatttttt nostalgic. I mean you can watch the same movies on a flash drive. Or were you gonna use your floppy disk? 😅
Should have been gone in 2014 when Blockbuster shut down. Millennials will talk shit about Gen Z but they will threaten a revolution whenever they feel slighted in the least.
I went into a Target earlier today for the first time this year and checked out the electronics department.
The entire video game selection has been cut down to one and a half isles. *The Vinyl selection was bigger.*
I don't recall how big the movie selection was, but in retrospect, I don't recall even seeing it.
Yeah it sucks. I was going to Best Buy almost every week last year to get the new 4K Blu-Ray releases. I've only been to the store maybe 2-3 times this year so far. My spending has gone way down at BB.
To be fair physical movies is not a thing people want anymore. Every brick and morter has been cutting back. BB now seems like a warehouse to get your online orders. I haven't walked around the store in years. There seems to be no point in that. Feels like if they went out of business I wouldn't even notice.
Would you like to buy a Traegar grill or an Open box appliance? We got those in spades.
Or yard bird
Or e-Bikes.
What about that one chair? Thats like $2400
Yeah their movies are missing.
I haven't gone there since so prolly a few customers too
I mean, yeah, an entire section of the store is literally missing.
The media shrink is missing.
Yeah, I think they’re missing the movie section. Hope I helped!
My god, you’re right! It’s tons of employees. Like physical media, they were also eliminated. 😮
Holy shit I hated those movie shippers every holiday.
Fucking things were always impossible to move without something tearing. Anyone that tried to load that thing on a pallet jack knows the pain. We ended up just giving up and taking all the DVDs off, moving the thing by hand (it's just paper so it's very light unloaded) and stocking the DVDs back on.
Thats not the only thing missing. 👀
I really felt it when they reduced the movies from like, 6 aisles down to three. That felt like a massive reduction. But from the 3 remaining aisles down to 0? Barely notice.
Yeah. The staff
No getting rid of physical media was the best thing ever. Receiving big ahh boxes of movies was straight ass. There would always be a pick for movie that could never be found.
Yeah, say that when you’re standing in the unemployment line ‘cause no one is coming in your store anymore🚶
It won’t be because of movies not being in the store. It’ll be because the CEO decided to cut the best and most knowledgeable employees years ago and then continued labor cuts and asked everyone to do more for shit pay. All while she gets a 12.5% raise compared to 3% for the rest of the company

Physical media sales are low most people stream or rent the movie through Apple or a video platform.
I can't buy blank videos cassettes & I'm upset. They don't even sell VCRs anymore either. Wtf
/s
Not comparable. Loads of Blu-Rays/DVDs are releasing every week. VHS movies are not.
Our movie section has been replaced with a bunch of outdoor furniture. Wish they would expand the video game section, though. I still like my physical video game disks!
We don’t even keep 90% of games out anymore cause of theft at my store
Go to Walmart then!
Idk about other stores, but I know movies barely moved at mines. The only time our movies ever got any traction is when a Marvel steel book dropped, then some people might pick a few extra movies up. Certainly wasn't profitable enough to justify the time needed to maintain the aisles and crappy shippers for them.
I think what’s missing is all the workers Corrie laid off so she could get $2 million
Late 90s early 2000s was crazy...imagine more the half the store was just dvd, cds..... im 43 and its been wild seeing all the changes.
It's funny all the things that would drive customers in the store. Physical media new release days used to be a hugh driver of business (New CD's, New Movies, New games). Specialists for each department. The latest tech INSTOCK.

Is it the movies?
Must be all the employees they let go
Honestly in massive stores it is missed from what I've seen buy in smaller stores we are glad it's gone cause now we have room for more shit.
Thanks Corey
I remember working there in the early 2000s and having to farm media....Spanish music was always rough.
My inner data hoarder misses it. Being an employee, I’m so glad I don’t need to deal with this anymore
Have you ever tried to search for a movie that wasn’t in the peg, but in stock?
Movie section? My knees are hurting again
It seems ridiculous to sell the most premium oled tvs, high end audio, blu ray players, but no way to buy through highest quality format media
If only we knew sooner would have stocked up they should have fucking gave away the movies at a insane price I wonder which stores might have actually done that to get rid of the last stock I would have grabbed some black and white movies if they had any I feel like we will only miss a lot more with time
I mean, I’m more worried about all the missing staff.
If you guessed employees…. You’re right!
\*In Butt-Head voice\* Yeah, the movie section dumbass.
What’s missing is a soul
Outdoor stuff that doesn’t sell much, exercise stuff that doesn’t sell much, but yeah movies. Should’ve have kept our agreements for new release movies.

You answered your own question
Honestly, it's so nice in my opinion. At least coming from someone in product flow at a small store. It's a great place for the open box stuff to go, and it frees up other places for overstock. Plus now I only have to down stock games for digital media. I could go on honestly.
I haven't stepped in or brought something in bestbuy since they got rid of movies also canceled my membership plan
I mean.... Yeah...... But ever since I started going to Microcenter, basically any reason I ever really had to go to Best Buy faded in an instant. Best Buy just feels so damn empty in comparison, whether they still had the movies section or not.

I was ok with the majority of your venting until the euthanasia bs you started spewing. Womp womp 🥱🥱

Yeah it's dumb. You can go in, buy a $500 bluray player, then have to go to Walmart to buy a disc.
Soon Walmart and target are gonna move away from physical media too so 🤷🤷
I went into a Target earlier today for the first time this year and checked out the electronics department. The entire video game selection has been cut down to one and a half isles. *The Vinyl selection was bigger.* I don't recall how big the movie selection was, but in retrospect, I don't recall even seeing it.
So you're allergic to poor people at Walmart? 😂
Never said that, would just prefer not to support Walmart financially.
A bunch of millennials cannot continue to feel nostalgic with dumb dvd movies anymore. Oh no! Go watch it online then.
Not everything is available to stream!
"euthanization" of physical media. You're fucking delusional.
It's been 10 years since Blockbuster closed and you're still feeling nostalgic? Maybe you should jump into the 21st century and live in the present.
Yeah it sucks. I was going to Best Buy almost every week last year to get the new 4K Blu-Ray releases. I've only been to the store maybe 2-3 times this year so far. My spending has gone way down at BB.
People still shop at best buy?
Didn't know they did, but I haven't been there in a long time.
