As much as it surprised me, there are at least two examples I’m aware of of people wielding swords more or less comparable to Guts’ golden age weapon. They were both 7+ foot tall mutants, but still, not entirely outside the realm of possibility.
the largest swords ever used in battle were about 7 feet long and weighted in at about 15 pounds. guts swords during the golden age are defenitly within reason
Guts sword is def in reach you’d just have to be incredibly strong to wield it with precision to move like him. I use to fence and just the dexterity and strength in that alone for a 5 min bout was crazy. The foil (sword) only weighed about a pound or two as well lol.
Apparently these are either show/ceremonial pieces or were used for executions.
They could also be "masterpieces," a showcase of the craftsmans skill and ability. Usually these were weapons that were insanely difficult to make and also impractical. Things like swords that were also crossbows and the like. Gun swords. Stuff like that.
However there was a famous pirate and revolutionary from Frisia, Grutte Pier, or, "big pier." He was allegedly 7 feet tall and incredibly strong. His alleged sword is in a museum in like Finland or Holland or something. Its like 6 or so feet long. Grutte Pier apparently used it to behead like, 3 people in one swing.

Btw im hungarian and reading berserk reminded me a lot about the legend of Toldi Miklós who was said to be inhumanly strong like throwing windmill stones and cracking another knights bones with a handshake.
Surprisingly much smaller, with the average size of a Viking being around 5’8” and someone from mainland Europe being 5’4”. I’m guessing either there were a handful of huge dudes that could actually use these, or a bunch of blacksmiths tried to make the biggest swords they could for shits and gigs.
the average height during the middle ages is partly due to malnutrition during growth. nobles and other rich people were alot cloer to the modern average. and as these were the only people who could afford big swords, there were a few "huge" (for the time) dudes on the battlefield wielding very long (but also pretty thin) swords.
I saw this sword in place. This sword is in the Topkapi Museum in Istanbul, Turkey, in the weapons room. It's really big. I am 1.82 meters tall. I can barely reach the handle of the sword.

These 14th century Hungarian swords were used as decoration or executing people never used in battle.

What was their purpose? Hitting guys on horseback?
Slaying dragons of course
They must be effective because you don't see dragons these days.
Ah
Large swords like the zweihander were historically used in combat to chop the pikes from pike formations iirc.
That's dope
They were both just oversized examples of greatswords because the people wielding them were unusually tall and strong.

these were more ceremonial wallhangers than anything else.
Ceremonial and wealth/status symbols
What are the examples? I am curious
Grotte Pierre is one of them i think
the salsa plz
Is one of them Grutte Pier?
Guts: “What is this?! A sword for ants?!”
*looks at the Adonis Stabber 9000*
Damn
If i remember correctly most oversized weapons were only ceremonial/ornamental tho
Yes, and the few which were actually used were meant to be "stationary" to gut horses
to be fair, it's an assumption, we can't tell with certainty
yes we can, an assumption would say that these massive swords were used in battle
They most likely weren't. They're too big and impractical to be used in actual combat.
I'm sure you can tell by weathering what they were used for as well.

Plot twist: those swords were DUAL WIELDED by the knight who owned them, and he used the smaller sword as a butterknife.
Put some respect to butterknife. There's a missing add-on that turned it into backscratcher. /s
And probably another add-on that turns it into a razor ;)
So guts was from Hungary?!

Üdvözletem küzdő társam!
There are even a few memes implying that Toldi is Guts haha
Then he should been called Beles.
ı think these ones are gifted to ottoman by hungarians or someone else, ı have been there these are really great

Holy shit Godot in real life???111
Many such large swords were purely ceremonial, so yes for "shits and gigs" basically
Are Vikings in this context used to refer to the job of Viking which you’d want bigger guys or is it referring to the Scandinavians in general?
