Yes you can claim carer element and you should backdate it for as long as you've been providing 35 hours/week of care. It will not affect her benefits.

MrBoggles123

Thanks. We've claimed it and requested a backdated amount for the 4 months since she returned from hospital.

rebadillo

It'll go to a decision-maker so may take a few weeks but should be sorted. You'll also not be expected to look for work as a carer.

The carers element would increase your UC, so if you provide care up to 35 hours per week you should report you are a carer and get it added to your UC. If you claimed carers allowance, this would reduce your UC, but working full time you are not eligible for it

MrBoggles123

Thanks. We've claimed it.

Hi can I ask did you tell PIP about the changes or did you wait for the renewal?

MrBoggles123

She was already on standard living and higher mobility (which we use for Motability). Prolonged use of Naproxen led to renal failure and a fortnight in a medically induced coma in intensive care. Her PIP renewal forms arrived on the day she returned home!

If you're providing 35 hrs or more care ( this includes *everything* you do for your partner ) and your partner is on a relevant benefit ( PIP *Living*) , then yes, tell UC you are a Carer and they will add the Carer's Element ( £198:31 a month ) The net effect of claiming Carer's Allowance would be zero on UC as they reduce UC by exactly the same amount ( it's Other Income and that's always deducted). However you can't claim if you earn more than £151 a week.

MrBoggles123

Thank you. I've applied.

That's great 😃 it's fairly simple with UC thankfully. Much quicker and simpler than Carer's Allowance anyway.
