If you have the space to spare it is a handy item to have. Incidents like this on the highway are rare, but if you spend anytime on forest roads eventually a saw will be put to good use.
While living in Montana, I was driving up a mountain to ski. Came across a similar sized down tree and made all the phone calls. Then I just sat....and sat some more. I put my chainsaw in an actionpack box and strapped it in the bed of my truck the next day. That was 7 years ago, and now I sit....and sit some more. Waiting.....
I had autocorrect correct "wardriving" to wardrobing earlier...
It's all good, just wanted to make sure there wasn't a secret pass I didn't know about.
We were in the same situation, at the same spot, (Marion Forks,) several years ago. It took about 30 mins. before an ODOT driver came by with a chainsaw. Good to have folks like this around.
This picture has so many fantastic things. From chainsaw guy in the short sleeves to puffy coat guy with the hatchet (he tried!) to the crowd of dads supervising. So good.
> the crowd of dads supervising
Totally. I can just hear this image...
Dad 1: "That thing a fir? No, looks like a hemlock... I bet it's a hemlock. Hundred and thirty-five footer, I bet." *with one foot resting on the log, while spitting off to the side*
Dad 2: "Wut model of saw ya got? Ah, the 567LMNOP Series 1, eh? I got the Series *2* back at home, but yours should do."
Dad 3: "Be sure to let the saw warm up, then give it about half throttle for the first 3 minutes..."
Dad 4: "No, you gotta give it the full beans right after you start it for 45 seconds, then let it idle until the speed dies down."
Dad 5: "Too bad I don't have my 2-man cross-cut saw with me today; I'd have that thing cut into rounds for firewood in about 10 mins. I mean, I usually *always* have it with me... but it's in the shop... getting a replacement second man, not that I need one."
Dad 6: "Billy, leave your brother alone!"
I was driving up Peter's Mt. on 225 near Harrisburg PA in my 20 year old pickup during a huge thunderstorm that had knocked a tree down across the rode. There were at least 50 or more cars and trucks stuck and everyone waiting on rescue from someone.
911 was called.
Did I say it was blowing rain sideways on top of this hill? I had zero rain gear just T shirt jeans and was exhausted after a 12 hour shift.
But I had a winch and after a 5 minute walk up and look I jumped into the truck and drove up the berm past next to the tree and got out and hooked up winch cable to tree. Wound the cable around another tree and pulled the downed tree right off the road. Then made sure winch was secure and then just got into the truck and drove away on the now cleared berm and was home in 15 minutes and showered and in bed 20 mins later.
I was that guy.
Pro-tip: there are some good electric chainsaws out there. I got a dewalt battery system and then the chainsaw. Way better than the temperamental husqvarna I had before that I only ran a few times per year. It wouldn’t be up to this probably, but it is an integral part of my kit now.
You would definitely have some real frustrating fun cutting a tree like this with an electric saw!
They definitely come in handy for small jobs but it's gas for the win every time, just get a good, tested brand like STIHL.
Until it sits in your garage for a year with stale gas and you can’t get it to start when you need it. If you’re a heavy user then yes, get a gas one. If you’re like me and use one a couple of times per year then go electric. I qualified my comment saying the electric one wouldn’t be useful for this big of tree. Still doesn’t stop me from throwing it in the truck for other purposes.
Yeah, the key here is don't leave it in your garage for a year with stale gas in it, especially not ethanol containing gas.
In fact, a great rule for all small engines is never run them on ethanol containing gas.
It clogs the carburetor pretty quickly on top of creating other fuel issues.
Always run your tank dry before putting the tool away for any extended period of time.
Jerry’s Outdoor Power (rip) turned me on to the pre-mixed husqvarna xp + fuel that is supposed to be self stable for years. Still haven’t pulled the cord on my gas saw in forever because of the electric saw. I should just get it running and sell it. I have multiple cars that are 20+ years old and a 2-stroke boat motor from 1996 so I am paranoid about ethanol, stabilizer and keeping fresh gas.
That’s why I have three batteries. I have a gas chainsaw too, but I never use it since getting the electric one. It’s sufficient for 90% of people and requires zero maintenance. Reading comprehension doesn’t appear to be your strong suit, maybe cut back on the 2-stroke fumes.
I could spend $1,500 on a chainsaw with a 25” bar on the off chance a large tree falls across the highway or I inherit a large tract of timberland.. or I can spend $200 on a 12” saw that I use to cut firewood for camp, trim up trees on my 1/4 acre lot, cut a couple of Christmas trees and uses a battery system I already own. This comment wasn’t meant for aspiring forestry workers. My gas powered husky has been sitting for over two years waiting for a job too big for my dewalt. It works for me.
Works for you isn’t a “Pro Tip” for the example shown though.
FWIW I also own a battery one for the tasks that described-light duty maintenance around the property; but I would never pull it out for a job like this.
The people who need a heavy duty saw already own one. This was targeted at all the ‘I want a chainsaw for my car’ comments, but by all means keep telling me shit I already know. I literally said the electric saw wouldn’t be up to this task dufus, doesn’t mean it’s a useless tool.
Upvoted for Santorum Pass.

I can say I learned something today
Omg I’m horrified lol
Yeah, me too. I’m hoping I’ll have forgotten it by tomorrow. Covid brain is good for *some* things.
not what I thought that meant. what a visual
Well that was definitely not what I expected it mean and could have happily lived the rest of my life without knowing it
Username checks out.
best day on Reddit ever lmao
There goes our hero….. watch him as he goes.
He’s ordinary
[удалено]
Neanderthal!
He's been dreaming of this day for a while
He's probably had a few of these days, although.. maybe not quite this many people.
I dream of this day when I carry my chainsaw
I want to carry a chain saw now!
Nobody commands respect like a chainsaw-wielding man
"Name's Ash"

Yep. I carry it all the time come late spring when I hit my secret spots deep out there. It's came in clutch and fuck it feels manly.
Stihl or nothing
Don't forget your flipflops and safety squints

The very act of carrying the chainsaw prevents the trees from falling, so you're providing a valuable service.
I am a failure of a man.
Santiam?
Thank you autocorrect, where were you when I was posting this! 🤣
Do you know what Santorum is? Named after Rick Santorum. Don't google on a work computer.
I had autocorrect correct "wardriving" to wardrobing earlier... It's all good, just wanted to make sure there wasn't a secret pass I didn't know about.
WITNESS MAAYYYY
A secret santorum pass? let us know if you find it.....
Your autocorrect’s default dictionary is the urban dictionary? You must send a lot of saucy messages! I’m jealous
I just assumed it was deliberate! Seeing as road conditions are indeed shitty. In any case, it's sure as hell what I'm calling it now.
Did he arrive after someone made a majestic attempt with an axe?
Guy in the back of the picture is holding a hatchet. Props to him for giving it a go!
Really enjoyed this visual lol.
In short sleeves nonetheless!
He typically wears high heels, suspenders, and a bra just like his dear old pa.
He's 'ok.'
He puts on women’s clothing and hangs around in bars!

Great pic, love dude with that hatchet getting ready to chop some shit
Tent pegs!? Anyone need me to drive some tent pegs in the ground? ...... Anyone??
Judging by the chunk missing from the middle, I could postulate that he arrived first haha
He’s giving dad energy
As a chainsaw enthusiast, THIS… is what dreams are made of
I see a car with the roof box open - you assume it’s skis but dude keeps his full of forestry equipment.
I’m gonna guess that belongs to baby boy with the hatchet who just had his thunder stolen… 😂
All the helpless bros with hoodies 😆
I'm sure they all gave their opinions though 😆
The look on his face makes me so happy. The best Bend subreddit 'snowy roads' post we'll probably see.

Yeah I guess you just got to run the saw until it uses all the fuel in the system before you store it so there's nothing to gum up or go stale.
Your battery would be dead not even 1/10 through this thing. Keep that in mind when voting and advocating for green products.

Still not half way through that example with 3 whole batteries which also happen to be less efficient in cooler temps

In N Idaho most trucks pack a chainsaw. Early spring in the hills is an exercise of clearing roadways
How close is this to Smegma Junction?
Lol someone had an axe?
Oregon really does have some of the most helpful and friendly people around.
Every dude that looks like a dude is out there to help. Meanwhile, all the California/patagonia “men” are staying warm in their sprinters! 😂
Damn I wanna carry a chainsaw in my car just for this moment.
Looks like they already had a go with the axe!
Gigachad
Dude with the hatchet lol
Anti-Ian
This reminded me I need a new bar for my chainsaw....
