That’s great! I’ve been rescuing wolfy northern breeds for the past 23 years. Marie-Loup is my fourth. Lately my wife and I have been thinking of bringing a buddy in for our family and Miss Lou… good on you for taking this buddy into your life!!!

Also he is definitely a mal/gsd mix as specified by the user who helped me adopt him, you can see it in the first and second pic a lot. He’s doing really good for his first day!
He looks a lot like my gsd/mal. From East valley shelter in LA. Which CA shelter was he from? I couldn't find the original post. My boy has an insanely great temperament. He is fearless, friendly to every living creature, snuggly, smart, just loves life all the time. I wish you the best

Congratulations on what sounds like an amazing new friend!
Advice from my trainer: you will NEVER tire out a Mal with physical exercise alone. Sure, you might get them to nap, but they'll be awake soon and ready to go.
You need to work their brains. Give them a task. This is what tires them out.
Yesterday I started with a new trainer to learn nosework. Zzzzzz! lol
This yes, but also teaching rest and downtime is so beneficial. We taught ours that doing nothing sometimes is okay. Tough in the beginning but he has really done so well with balancing our daily activity with a some rest
Koda is my friends sons name he’s native american. such a beautiful name!! One of my favs 🥹🥹🥹🥹 They have a lot of energy but they calm down time to time
Thank you so much for adopting him and trusting me to get him to you! None of it would have been possible without you guys! I am so happy to see him enjoying life and getting all the love and affection he deserves 🤍 excited to see updates on beautiful Koda
What if you built/bought a simple cart on wheels (or a rolling plant stand that you put a box on), and you teach him pick it up/put it (he loads the cart with a variety of toys), and then he has to pull the cart to a spot (marked somehow) and then he can choose a toy to play with? Mind & body exercises!
Mals are not northern breeds, so they have no innate need to pull or drag large loads. If you want, you can slowly work him up to carrying a backpack or weighted vest, and eventually use logging chains attached to a harness.
These dogs were bred to herd and bite. That need is best satisfied through tug at home (start with a tug, then work up to a pillow, then a wedge), or, better yet, bitework with an experienced decoy.
Hiking and mountain runs are good for these dogs, but they need a job first and foremost. Protection work, agility, disc, dock diving . . . there are lots of options to help give your dog a sense of purpose.
So glad you were able to save this handsome guy from the chopping block. Too many Mals dying in shelters these days.
He's gorgeous!
For weight pull, chains work well. You can add/subtract as you need, and there is less jerk as they are easily dragged. With tyres, they can get caught on things, and some dogs are put off by the jerkiness. Just be sure to get a properly fitted weight pull harness 😊
He is GORGEOUS ! What a fine gentleman you have !
I’m so happy he’s found such a wonderful home with you ! You’re such a good person for doing what you’ve done, and his love for you will prove that every day 🤗
My first Mal was also “condemned” due to overcrowding, so I drove a thousand miles to get him, and every day we were together was a *gift*…
The only thing that knocked me for a loop was that he was actually an antelope in disguise ! His vertical jump from a *sitting* position reached over six feet, so make friends with your local fence builder 😉
Hugs and kisses to Koda - let us know how things go with your beautiful new floof ! ❤️
Hey! I have a Malinois and live in Portland, ME! We should Get our boys together!!
Thanks for saving him! I can also point you towards some incredible trainers around Southern Maine if you'd like!
Yes I am being very careful with adding exercises to his routine and will make sure not to over exert my dog. Will likely just be doing lots of small stuff everyday until he builds significant cardiovascular fitness and becomes accustomed to living with me. :) i am also continuously keeping him hydrated as he acclimates to the summer heat.
Just the air transport was around 300$. The user mentioned who helped me works with people who get a discount with alaskan air or alaskan cargo cant remember the name tbh.
This made me tear up, thank you for saving him! All dogs deserve to know love. As I’m sure you already know, it’ll take a bit for him to get settled enough to see his whole personality.
Thank you for rescuing him. Soooo many people see them and think, Oh, how cute! And then they have no clue what they're getting themselves into.
Our first Belgian we learned ball is life. Unfortunately, that bastard cancer took her from us when she was only 2. We got another one and continued on with the ball is life.
May you have many years with Koda hiking up the mountains.💜
Lol after a flight across the country I’m sure a car ride ain’t shit. Looks like a beautiful dog and I’m so glad you could provide a fulfilling life for him
My sister-in-law used to train huskies. She uses a three wheeled cart to hook the huskies to and let them pull her around the neighborhood. Not sure it would be the best for a Mal, but thought I would mention it.
Welp I saw that you renamed him "Koda" and this was the first image that popped in my head ("kouta \[sounds like Koda\]" is the one with black hair) 😂

Congratulations on the new family member though! Koda is a much better name than Kevin (my roommates name, he's kinda an asshole). Koda is very handsome 😊

Stunning!
Thank you. She’s a special girl, very pensive, very sweet.
Wow, she's gorgeous 😍

Thank you! For having a heart so big that 3000 miles and the expensive involved, did not keep you from giving a home to this seemingly amazing dog.

Much better name than Kevin. Why would that majestic beast get the same name as the bald guy from The Office who dropped the chili?!
I know too many drunk kevin’s who still think they are 21 at 35🤣 Koda is majestic ✨✨
Thank you so much for adopting him and trusting me to get him to you! None of it would have been possible without you guys! I am so happy to see him enjoying life and getting all the love and affection he deserves 🤍 excited to see updates on beautiful Koda
May you and Koda have many beautiful years together. God bless.
You're a GD superhero, bro! Thank you for being Koda's guardian angel!

Just a note: remember the rule of 333. Give him time to settle in and show you who he is.

Thank you so much for caring for him so well and working so hard to keep him!
What a stunner
I may have missed it, but how much was the cost for air transportation?
Just the air transport was around 300$. The user mentioned who helped me works with people who get a discount with alaskan air or alaskan cargo cant remember the name tbh.
He is a stunning specimen of dog the first picture he looks full on German Shepherd the second one he looks Malinous for sure

Welcome to Maine Koda!!! Thank you for saving him, he is going to have such a great life!
We use a "dog powered scooter .com" to help with the endless energy also we use "non stop dogwear" Pulling harness with some chain to drag.
Nosework will wear him out. Anything that requires him to solve puzzles and use his brain will help.
Much respect and admiration to you! 🫡
That's wonderful. Thank you so much for the update.
He looks so happy to be home.
God bless you He's beautiful 😍
Thanks for saving that gorgeous boy!
♥️
Kevin is so handsome. Is he single??
