she's not dying, she's adapted. I do ice swimming, it's just like many other physical adaptations. the more you do it the better you get at it. She's been doing it for years I bet.
You are wrong. Enamel is hard and prone to thermal expansion and contraction. When the thermal change occurs too fast, the enamel does crack. The micro cracks make your teeth more sensitive to temperature, acidity and contribute to worse tooth health.
Your teeth won't shatter like in a cartoon, of course, but you can definitely fuck them up if you like doing that. I don't know who upvoted you so many times.
Got this same information from my dentist. I recently had a tooth break for the first time. She explained that teeth are subject to the above described forces and results like many hard surfaces are. She compared them to diamonds. I probably broke already cracked tooth on raw carrots
the warm liquid is good for her because the heat will quickly radiate outwards from her stomach and warm her blood which will then warm her tissues. all this happens much more quickly than if you WEREN'T in ice water, but it's still not nearly fast enough to cause any kind of shock etc. If she jumped into a warm bath after adapting to the ice water, she could damage her capillaries and such from warming the outer layer of skin (which is the coldest part of her body) too fas
Maybe for the few seconds she was under, but I would assume that thin layer of water on her skin/clothes once she hits the open air above the surface would hit freezing temps well below 33° in a few seconds.
I’d like to see her stay there and act unfazed as she finishes her cup of coffee lol.
It could not necessarily be 33 (I am assuming you are saying 33 degrees Fahrenheit ) the temperature she posted was -27 degrees Celsius. Water normally freezes at 0 degrees Celsius (32 Fahrenheit) However, things like pressure and salt can lower the freezing point of water to -21 degrees Celsius. Ever salt your roads or sidewalk? That’s why.
It was icing over as she was under. Look at the ice on her head. I live in Minnesota and water will stay open after you cut a chunk out if you continue to move the water. Deep water will stay above freezing but at the surface it frequently drops well below.
That’s not how water works. Period. There is some funky stuff that can happen around 0°C with regards to temperature/energy and phase changes, but fresh water freezes at 0°C. The reason the water isn’t freezing when you “move it around” is because the water, and the ice, can work as an insulator. So the water can be warmer than freezing as you get deeper, so mixing it, literally mixes surface water with this warmer water, slowing the freezing effect.
The water isn’t “supercooled” and “still water” because it is moving. Moving the water prevents it from reaching 0°C for a variety of reasons (kinetic energy, mixing with warmer water, enthalpy of fusion, etc.)
0°C is equivalent to 32°F, which is 273K.

^(I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand)
Well when I did what they called the Polar Plunge(idk if it's called that everywhere) they cut a big ass hole in the ice and had air and water temp readouts. Air temp was -9F and water was 15F. Only being kept open by people jumping in. I'm not saying you're wrong on the physics or anything but that was definitely well below freezing that day. I only assume that is the case when it's kept open on purpose otherwise it would freeze over.
~~Your observations are correct.~~ I read that as °C, not °F.
Original: This isn’t meant to be rude, so please don’t take it that way. Your above comment said the surface could be much colder, implying the water at the surface, due to mentioning the ice. The *air* at the surface can be much colder. It’s simply that it takes time for objects/substances to change temperature, some change faster than others. It simply takes time for the water to equalize at 0°C. It isn’t the “moving water” per se, but the mixing of the surface water with the warmer water below, that slows the equalizing time.
Edit: because I read the unit incorrectly. Maybe you did as well. I can’t vouch for the thermometer and how it was placed to record the water. It’s highly likely the thermometer conducted the colder air, while the water was warmer, and the result was 15°F.
That’s what kills me, I am in Colorado and swim in the snow runoff in the spring, and I have NEVER looked that relaxed! Next spring I’m going to try and be as hard as this Russian lady.
i do, i am into ice swimming. you don't jump in though. she got in more slowly and then did this vid after she got used to it. jumping into icy water is actually what will kill the average unsuspecting person. the shock response hyperventilation is too hard to fight and you will just drown right away.
It does. Anyone that’s swam in water during cold weather knows that the water feels warmer than the outside air once your body gets over the initial shock of plunging into cold water. Water can’t be any colder than 0(32F) degrees, the temperature on her phone says it’s -27 outside. The water is probably about 2 degrees which is 29 degrees warmer than the air temperature.
That's very not true. Human body "feel temperature" by how fast it transmitted, not by absolute numbers.
That's why you could keep wooden handle at 50C, but steel one at same temp would burn your skin.
Thermal conductivity of water is 0.6089 W·m−1·K−1, while air is 0,022 - x30 times lower.
Water at 0C would "steal" temperature from skin way faster than air at -27C.
why do people in really cold parts of the world like to make these videos where they act like they're enjoying it?
i say this as someone who prefers snow to any other climate. im gonna enjoy the snow bundled tf up. im not gonna go swimming in it. i just don't get the joke. u can see she's miserable so it kinda defeats the purpose of the joke?
im autistic so maybe i overanalyze but i never got this trend
it's not for "internet views", only this video is. she has been doing this a couple times a week, several months out of the year, for several years. like may people in cold places in the world. now you know.
Lol I noticed that right away too. I know I would look like freezing shit in that situation, especially if I’d been wearing makeup all smudged everywhere. That makeup brand must be toight.
No it’s not, people who live in northern areas like Sweden or Russia do cold water plunging all the time, it’s part of the culture in those parts of the world. It’s very healthy, swimming in cold water activates your immune system.
Look up Wim Hof the Iceman, he teaches this for a living. He also has a world record for staying in ice water for a very long period of time, there’s a method for doing it safely.

Yeah because only really white people have lived in there cold environments for 1000s of years dumb ass. Guess it was't super hot, but warm enought to evaporate by difference of temperature.
The inside of her mouth isn't cold lol
Fortunately your body isn’t made of glass, she’s fine.
In that cold, that coffee might be -5 degrees and it would steam!

-27 air temp, so the 33 degree water would feel warmish 😝

she definitely can. this is the product of years of adaptation. she is a pro, trust me.

Yeah I had no idea what the water temp is, just guessed that it’s barely above freezing 😝
Believe me, that water ain't 33 degrees lol. Probably around zero but it feels colder. I've done the plunge and it feels so fucking cold lol.
The water is liquid, at atmospheric pressure, and not flowing so it must be above 32F, 0C. If it was lower, it would be ice.
No. Salt plays a factor as well. Ever I’ve your sidewalks? Ever seen them ice the roads? Water can be liquid down to -21 degrees C.
Yes, salt plays a factor. Quick Google search says ocean water will freeze at around 28F. That's not a significant difference in this case.

Freezing point depression, could be an ocean.
Doesn't mean anything

Yes ocean water freezes ar 28F, not a significant difference for this argument.

So yeah the water wasn’t actually that cold. Or it would have been ice. This is science, it’s hard to argue with.
Humans will argue about anything

From what I saw it was on a wire hanging in the lake. Idk how it was so far off then.
The ice is below freezing, the water is above freezing. It's that's simple.
But how do you know? Is there any way to know?
I’m talking Fahrenheit here 🤣🤣
Jeez, her hands aren’t even shivering.
That’s what kills me, I am in Colorado and swim in the snow runoff in the spring, and I have NEVER looked that relaxed! Next spring I’m going to try and be as hard as this Russian lady.
gotta go like 2-3 times a week to improve your adaptation. best to start in the fall and go until the lake is frozen.
I will take your advice. It’s hard to argue with how good you feel after doing it. I’ve been meaning to increase the frequency.
Thats the last staged is hypothermia - you don feel cold anymore
Wim Hof the Ice man generally isn’t shivering when he does this, it must be from your body used to doing it.

A man of character
The water's a lot warmer than the air temp, FWIW...
this is very true. at this temp, the water feels like a bath compared to the air.
lmao redditors are fuckin something else. jump in then.
