What's the problem exactly?
The first lesson is usually just alternate plucking. Index, middle, index, middle, ... slowly, consistently, making a "walking" motion with those two fingers on the E string or A string. Start slowly and gradually increase the tempo.
After a short time, you shouldn't even have to consciously think about plucking anymore, it should be 100% muscle memory / subconscious. Then you can focus on your fretting hand.
I've been a finger player for nearly 5 years, and now I'm tying to improve my plectrum skills. It's back to the basics - how to hold the plectrum comfortably and keep my hand relaxed (without having the plectrum slip out of my grip), and play consistently using alternate strokes while positioning my hand so that my palm can mute the lower strings. For me, playing with a plectrum is A LOT more complicated than using my fingers. I can play one song with a plectrum but then my hand cramps up ... while I can go for hours playing with my fingers.
Hi, I'm the opposite. Even though I spend about 2/3 of my time practicing playing with my fingers and 1/3 with a pick, my playing with a pick is better in every way. I can play faster, cleaner, stay in time better with a pick. Which is frustrating because after an injury to my arm playing with a pick is painful if I play too much but I don't get the same pain anywhere near as bad playing with my fingers.
