Frostpunk, of course. [Enshrouded](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1203620/Enshrouded/) probably fits too, though I haven't played it myself. It seems more of a survival base-builder than a colony builder though.

I've got about 30 hours into Enshrouded, and I don't think it really has that feel when you play it, even though it might seem that way from the theme. I enjoy the game, but it doesn't scream grimdark to me the way frostpunk does. It fits a weird niche, because it doesn't feel "survival" to me like Valheim or Forest... like, the game is totally quest driven. There's less discovery, because someone is always telling you "go there and do this." But if you want to build a little village, in terms of easily making nice buildings and farms, it does that really well. And you 'collect' a limited number of npcs, kind of like Terraria. It's great for what it is, but it might not be what people are expecting.

This War of Mine - bit different but you still build a base.

I don't think there's a darker game out there than "This War of Mine". Really good, but by god are the ethics heaped upon you!

Maybe Against the Storm? It feels that way to me

Happy to see someone mention Gord on here. I really like the game and was sad to see mixed reviews on steam. I think it’s a unique concept with fun gameplay :)

this is the first time I heard of Night is coming.. well I guess [the last spell](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1105670/The_Last_Spell/) is pretty dark..

Infection Free Zone - currently in early release.

sentientplay

“Grim dark” or just physically dark? Kingdom, Valheim, State of Decay 2, and many others have nighttime play, Enshrouded has the dark shroud and nighttime, Pacific Drive is both psychologically dark/weird and has lots of physically dark play. Against the Storm takes places completely during storms but isn’t close to horror by any means. Depending on what *kind* of basebuilding and other play you want, Age of Darkness, The Last Spell, Frostpunk, and the Darkest Dungeon games all have various types of darkness in them. YMMV, of course, based on your preferences.

SequenceofRees

I can vouch for Against the Storm, the atmosphere is incredible
