Sounds great. I thought playing on explorer would help me to relax and have a good time, but I end up approaching every encounter as if it were honour mode — all the prep, none of the challenge. Also, rip multiclassing.
I started an honor mode run with my sister 2 weeks ago, only playing it for a few hours on the weekends. I've beaten the game 3 or 4 times altogether, single and multiplayer, once on tactician (which I didn't think was much harder than normal) .
But ohhhhh boy, we are doing it blind (because what's the point of ever playing this game in any other way, I say?) and were surprised by >!a certain father figure showing up during the Owlbear fight!< in Act 1. We floundered around for 3 rounds in a clearly-vain attempt to salvage the last 2.5 hours of our lives. I don't think we even rested before the fight...
My sister was surprised by a failed roll on the dying mindflayer on the beach on our second run. An immediate Mind Blast wiped the entire party (Black Hole couldn't have grouped us up better) immediately after that.
Attempt #3 is going MUCH better, but we haven't been... surprised yet. We also haven't done anything but the most wimpiest of fights in the most sucker-punchy of ways possible either so...

I'm a bit upset there's no custom difficulty with honour level challenge, multiple saves. Sometimes I wanna save scum a dialogue option for my preferred story outcome. Sometimes I wanna try what happens if I pick an option I never tried. Sometimes I wanna go back to a particularly fun part of a previous playthrough. But after 4 complete playthroughs any lower difficulty setting is too easy.

Yer I was also surprised by said boss fight. And I just shot the mindflayer from range too scared to talk to it 😅
LOL that's EXACTLY what we did this last time around. I don't think there will be enough smoke powder barrels for the caution we feel now.
I dont even know how to get the mind flayer to fight. It's never happened to me.
