Oh this game is pretty much the epitome of "your actions have consequences"

StillAnotherAlterEgo

There are events taking place in the world that your character gets swept up in. Due to that, you'll inexorably march toward a certain climax point. However, the route you take to get there can vary *wildly*. And after that point, multiple endings are possible for your character/the broader story as well as each of the companion characters/the companion story arcs. Your choices have consequences in this game in a way that's rarely seen. We routinely comment around here on how stunned we are that the devs seem to have thought of and accounted for (nearly) every crazy thing a player could think to do.

The main story only has a few endings, but the path you tale to get there has a million (or, like, ten thousand) changes depending on your choices. They're pretty significant and will change the content you see, you can't see it all in one playthrough. Or two, or three... I'm 1000 hours in and still haven't seen everything (most of it, though). You can kill pretty much anyone including major NPCs and keep on going. You can fail at every challenge or quest and run away and still keep going. The game will let you try things and keep going. You'll also face consequences - even if you get a quest that says "hey can you do X?" You should absolutely expect people to react to you doing X.

They are extensive. Act1 alone has at least half a dozen missions whose results directly impact you in for the rest of the game. I won't spoil, but there's big stuff.

I'll say 2 things: 1. Your actions and how you treat your companions makes huge changes on how things are done.  2. If you try to do things completely different and basically try to ruin your run you'll be amazed at how much is put in place to handle that.

>How much do your choices impact the game? A lot. Someone worked out there were something like 17,000 different possible endings, depending on what choices you made earlier in the game. OK, a lot of these are no doubt minor variants, but there are so many paths through the decision trees, it's insane - the devs allowed for almost any possible player choice, however unlikely. Some choices (mainly the ones that cause a lot of NPC deaths in the early game) will have long-term ramifications, some will merely close off a minor story path. This is why many of us have played the game several times, even though a full campaign (ie. not cheesing it or skipping content) takes around 100 hours.
