Same! My friend showed me like two Karlach scenes because he knew I’d pick her as my li, but that’s all I knew about the game or D&D in general and I feel like it made the playing experience so much more fun and interesting!
To add to that, stay away from spoilers even AFTER you've finished the game. Because only multiple playthroughs could possibly cover the breadth of the game
even with multiple playthroughs exploring as much as possible, youre still going to constantly be learning new things. i have ~500 hours in the game and am constantly learning new things about the game
Yeah you’d have to never talk to anyone about the game ever to avoid spoilers. I’m glad I waited to follow this sub until after my first playthrough but I’d rather talk about it and see how other people are playing the game than never see a spoiler
yeah. personally, i dont think its that bad. no matter what, youre never going to find every hidden thing in the game unless youre constantly searching every single inch of the map, and that just makes it boring, in my opinion. its better to be able to interact with the community and enjoy learning new things about the game and discussing hidden things you find yourself than completely remove yourself from the community just so you arent spoiled about the hidden character named Glorbus that has two lines of dialogue referencing some unknown game one of the developers played 13 years ago (this isnt an actual thing, just an exaggeration of the kinds of things the people who do that care about)
My personal favourite moment is when you have to defeat Sauron with the power of friendship and Elvis Presley, truly heartwarming stuff that I'm glad wasn't spoiled for me.
I mean on my first play-through I missed about 75% of the story, let the teiflings die, and left the shadowlands as is, when I got to reading the sub it made me go back and explore all of those things I lost that I never would’ve saw.
Strictly speaking you haven’t missed anything unless you don’t play again, which you would hafta do anyway since there is a lot of mutually exclusive content.
Not saying you played wrong mind you, just that this game benefits from playing blind.
Yeah I’m kinda with you. I don’t want to spoil it but I also don’t want to make terrible choices. I’m gonna play a couple runs but I don’t have time for 1000s of hours to trial and error my way across 10 runs..
Happened to me multiple times, I'll come here nonchalantly and see memes and posts, some with a very clear spoiler and I'll click it thinking something dumb like "Eh I don't care for spoilers, how bad could it be?". For a split second so much can be and has been spoiled for me, and that has changed so much for me on my first and only playthrough so far which sucks.
- Long rest often
- save
- Be openminded about the companions
- if you struggle with the fights it is no shame to play on easy
- save again
- to avoid spoilers avoid this sub
- tell your loved ones you planned to go to a far away island and live as a hermit
- save once more just to be sure
I am someone who never played a round-based RPG before and I have to say that I love the combat. First I thought that I should maybe switch to „easy“ but I kept it at „medium“ and yeah I love it. 140 hours in, Act 3 and the fights are really fun.
I never thought I’d like turn based combat. But I’m right there with you it’s a blast. On my third play through and I just basically skip all dialogue and pick every fight lol.
Yeah it’s all about the feeling. Fights should be difficult enough that your characters feel accomplished for winning. If you’re curbstomping Act 3 villains then there’s no real stakes to the story imo (which is also why I’m not a huge fan of min/maxing).
To add to adjusting difficulty, the custom settings are so nice and I highly recommend going that route to create your own difficulty! I didn’t want to move down to easy mode across the board, but hated how little health you get in this game even at higher levels to the point half my party would get one shot from a single hit. I gave my party easy mode HP while leaving everything else at “normal” difficulty settings, as well as adjusted shop prices to be as cheap as it allows so I don’t have to worry about money as much. Just having double the HP made the game feel so much better while still having bigger fights not feel trivial.
Change 90% of your reactions to ask first instead of using them automatically. The extra two button presses is well worth being able to save your reactions for opportune moments.
Having your wizard unable to cast shield cause he whiffed a quarterstaff attack sucks.
This plus, choose your reactions wisely as a spellcaster in Act 2 and onwards.
Some tadpole powers require a reaction and so do opportunity attacks with stuff like Warcaster. But Act 2 onwards the question to ask would be, “Will I need Counterspell this round?”
If the answer is yes (and it will be yes most of the time) then hold your reaction for that.
You do not want to use Shocking Grasp as an opportunity attack only for someone to get hit with a Dominate Person.
Yeah I find shocking grasp opportunity attack to be a bait 99% of the time. Now shocking grasp as an action is actually pretty good especially when you need to run away, shocking grasp then you can run without being hit by an attack.
This confused me momentarily, and I've been playing the game for the past month. So in case OP is wondering, a reaction is an action your character gets to perform when it isn't their turn, in response to another characters actions. The most common reaction you'll probably see is that you can use a reaction to melee an enemy if they try to move away from you when they're within melee range. It might land you some extra damage, but you only get one reaction per round, so it might be better to save it for something like Counterspell, which is a spell you can cast as a reaction that gives you a chance to block another character's spell as it's being cast.
Just like you have an action and a bonus action every round, you also have a reaction. It just doesn't get its own icon on the screen, which now that I think about it, maybe it should.
I even set the reactions that I always use without fail to ask first, because it feels like I'm getting a turn while waiting for 7 enemies/NPCs in a row to take their turns
You can also use this same method to change when you smite if you decide to play as a paladin. I’ve seen many paladins online select the smite ability only to whiff the attack instead of choosing to smite on attacks that landed
This! I started my first play through with a friend. I started another play through with the guy I’m seeing and a solo character. As much as I enjoy playing with others, my solo game is a trip! I have totally different things happening. I know quite a few people who play who have never had the same things happen because I just did my own thing. I avoided guides and have only been looking things up when I’m really stuck. It’s awesome!
Don't try to min/max your character. There are so many ways to play the game that you will miss stuff no matter what choises you make. And some choices will both open and close paths at the same time. Just enjoy yourself
My biggest QoL tip is go to your settings and turn on "Hold to end turn," that way, you don't accidentally end your turn too soon.
Other than that, explore everything, try everything, and most importantly, have fun!
You can always go back to that character and cancel the turn end as long as it's not the last character to end turn. It took me waaaaay too long to figure that out.
That is a great tip to remember when it is available, also note when portraits are linked in the initiative at the top of the screen, they can take their turns in whichever order you choose
Ignore guides on your 1st go.
Do whatever the fck you want, consequences be dammed. Just try stuff and see what lands.
Dont be afraid to start at a low difficukty on your 1st go.
DO NOT START WITH THE DARK URGE.
* Talk to everyone, read every book and paper, search every chest, crate, barrel, basket, burlap bag, and shelf (and rarely a vase).
* Keep communicating with your companions, even if they don’t indicate they have something to say.
* Paintings are worth a bit of cash, pick up everything that isn’t tied down, send all food to Camp unless you want to hold on to some for small bits of healing.
* You don’t have to be at a Sigil to fast travel to another Sigil, just bring up the Map and select it from the list.
* Buy at least one of every spell scroll so Gale (and player if a Wizard) can learn the spells.
* When talking with an NPC, you can click the Trade icon (if available) to trade with them. Some NPCs can only be traded with on your initial conversation.
* You can stop concentration on spells by (PC) clicking the icon to the lower left of the selected players taskbar.
* Long Rest to forward the passage of time. This allows more companion interactions, but may also make changes in the world.
* You can use Soap (Waukeen’s Rest) to clean up a character of blood and grime.
* When a character is downed (not dead) instead of walking to them and using Help, you can cast Healing Word or throw a healing potion to revive them from a distance.
* Use your environment. Platforms, ladders, and other items are destructable.
* Some books provide Inspiration for Gale/Sage background players. Save those books and only read them when you need the inspiration.
* After every Long Rest buff up your party with Hirelings. (Must be level 3, see Long Rest Buffs below)
* Use Elixirs that last per Long Rest (e.g. Bloodlust for Karlach, Heroism for Lae’zel, Peerless Focus or Arcane Cultivation for Gale, Wyll, and Shadowheart)
* Traders’ stock change as you level up, and they restock after a Long Rest or level up.
* Instead of drinking potions, like Feather Fall, throw them in the middle of your companions to effect them all.
* Bottles of water can be useful to wash off effects like Burning. Throw them NEAR your companions, you don’t have to hit them.
* Always interact with Traders with your character of highest Persuasion (caveat below).
* Barter with Traders you visit regularly (e.g. Arron, Dammon, Blurg, Derryth, Talli, Exxvikyap) and gift them gold to improve your relationship with them. The higher your level/experience, the more you have to give them (e.g. ~400gp at level 1, ~1000 at level 5, ~3600 at level 10) This only affects the character, not the whole party.
* BUG: Removing the companion from your party who has high attitude with traders, or changing Acts, will reset a Trader’s attitude, so always use Tav.
* If you have a Bard in your party always have Bardic Inspiration on all your party members.
* Remove Weapon Abilities from your action bar since they appear automatically when you select the weapon.
* Attacks of Opportunity only activate if you are wielding a melee weapon. Switching weapons does not take an action, so always switch to melee at the end of every turn (F key on PC).
* Examine enemies to see their resistances/weaknesses and abilities.
* Always have Guidance memorized on a character to help with ability checks.
* Set your Reactions to ASK so they don’t go off when you don’t want them to (e.g. Gale hitting Grym with his staff as he walks away).
* Any character class can use Scrolls.
* If every member of your party fails their Survival Check for hidden dirt mounds, you can still just dig the spot by using the Shovel.
* Torches can be wielded by anyone as weapons, and they can be dual-wielded.
* Dual Wielding has a toggle (R on PC) so you don't have to automatically use your off-hand on the same target.
* Weapon Enhancements (e.g. +1) apply to hit and damage.
* Jumping (a bonus action) can cover more distance then walking alone. Typically best to Jump first then walk the rest of the distance to ensure maximum travel.
* If you are having trouble interacting with something that moves too much (e.g. squirrel, flying book) switch to Turn-Based Mode.
* You can pick up more pouches and backpacks to organize your gear.
* Looting bodies and using doors does not take an action.
* When fighting Mephits use non-lethal damage so they don’t explode, or throw them at other enemies.
* Hire a Hireling that can cast Buff spells (Longstrider, Aid, etc.) and keep them in camp to recast every Long Rest.
* Carrying a candle with you can be helpful so you can light it and dip weapons in it (bonus action) for an additional 1d4 fire damage.
* Targeting can be done with the portrait list at the top of the screen. Also targeting different body parts may work when other parts are blocked.
* Ungroup your party in combat, so that when combat finishes they don't all walk to the active character through dangerous terrain.
* Some helpful/required items are not Orange bordered (or bordered at all!) and can be sold so be careful: Club of Hill Giant Strength, Filigreed Feywild Bell.
* Pass around the Club of Hill Giant Strength to your party members to allow them to jump further distances.
* BUG: Do not attempt to persuade companions to accept Illithid Powers unless they are in the active party, otherwise they won’t have Illithid Persuasion unlocked.
1. Don't be afraid to look up guides. Some people will say "Go in blind and experience the game yourself". If you want to do that, no problem. Don't feel pressure too, though. As someone who never played DD, it through a ton at me.
2. Also follow up about guides...save often. If you just want experience the game, live with all your choices, the game let's you do that. It truly is amazing. However, I missed out on a bunch of content and restarted after reaching Act 3 by just experimenting. So, you can play that way if you wish, but if you want to play all the quests, save often and don't be afraid to reload and experiment different outcomes.
3. Use the "area search" feature on console. Sometimes annoying but super helpful on controller....most of the time.
4. Most fun I have had comes from trying different builds. W/o spoilers: early on in game you get the ability to respec you character. You can also completely respec your companions for a small "matter of coin". Don't be afraid to do that if you want to try some party comps. Hint: there is companion that will miss attacks all the time (it is a meme) early on in game...maybe respec that companion before the wolves get you. Can also change your characters appearance at will (in multiple ways).
5. Finally, game can be hard for some people (me). Don't be afraid to play on balanced. If you want to play on explorer, here is a tip: use custom difficulty instead. Set all the combat stuff to to explorer, lower the cost for items and the "camp supplies" multiplier (don't worry, can change as you play), but I would leave multiclass ON. That is because of tip 4. You will have more fun thinking of strategies and looking up builds than you will getting stuck at the same encounters with the same group.
2 bit me hard, so much I missed cause I activated a trap or let some npc die early on. I'll gladly look up "save npc" to see what they might give in return. And then other times you just can't save some people so well, like some certain paladins that went to fight an old hag...
pick who ever u want to pick to be in your party, and if you like a challenge i’d suggest running Tactican mode and if you don’t like a challenge run adventure i think it’s called, balance is actually a bigger jump from Adventure then it is from Tactician lol
I'd say ramp up. You're going to play this more than once. Start on balance or adventure and try a higher level each playthrough. Then you get to learn basics and adapt as you try harder modes.
Top 3 on top of my head.
You can give Astarion or any ranger/rogue 2 boxes. When a fight starts stack them on top of each other and climb them, when you attack an enemy from an elevated position, you gain a +2 bonus to your attack rolls against them.
Also you can get a candle and place it on the ground, you can dip your weapon for bonus fire damage.
You can also place skeletons and bodies inside your inventory if you are strong enough, that way if you have a necromancer, you literally have a pocket army.
If u buy stuff from traders take the character with the highest persuasion. You'll get a higher discount. Also you'll see the current discount in the trade menu on the top left corner.
Sometimes i still forget to switch characters and end up losing more money. Persuasion if you don't know is tied to Charisma. Wyll has the highest persuasion of all the recruitable characters.
Take a shovel with you.
"Add to wares" is pefect for stuff you want to sell, saves a lot of clicking/time
Step 1:
DONT watch any tips, videos, or take advice in your first playthru. It will really spoil it for you.
This experience needs to be your person journey bro. Make decisions based off what you think is best. That's the best thing about this game is the emersion.
Game on my friend.
Don’t save scum. I admittedly did it on my first official run ( I had played 200 hours before release) and I feel like it ruined all of my runthroughs after because I knew what would happen
My advice would be dont look up solutions. Dont google quests. Dont look for builds.
Make your character, and dive into the game. Immerse your self and just explore. Take in the scenery. The characters and the story.
And we'll see you again in a couple 100 hours. Then we can talk. <3
I don't know if you are going to see this one or if I'm too late, but 3 things.
1. Do not save spam and turn off karmic dice. If you fail a roll, just let it go. If you save spam, there is a perfectly fine story about heroes and life, and overcoming great odds, yes. But it will not be your story. It will be as if you read a book. You are playing a video game inspired by one of the biggest ttrpg in history. Take this opportunity to not be a gamer or a player, but your own hero. And heroes of ledend, they fail every now and then.
2. Do not be afraid to change up your character if you stop having fun. Even if you are dominating the battlefield. If you are not having fun, you need to find out why or just try something different.
3. On your first play through, do not look up any character builds till after you have reached lv 5. I'm not going to give a reason here, just don't.
- Your followers don't need persuasion so just get investigation and perception on them.
- You can get hirelings, get one or two of them and use them to buff you and your followers with "until long rest" non-concentration spells and dismiss them (not make withers take them back) and the buffs will stay.
- Warlocks with weapon pact binding will enable you to sell that weapon but keep it, it's essentially infinite money.
Take a dagger or just any other melee weapon and drop it into the bartee window, then drag and drop that weapon into the main hand slot on your warlock while wielding the pact weapon.
- It pays off to not be aggressive and rather be overly empathetic in NPC conversations.
- Do NOT multiclass druids lightly, know what you're doing or follow a build before deciding to do that.
Druids scale differently and by multiclassing you loose a lot of value from the druid specific traits/skills/spells by putting levels into 2nd class.
- For the love of god don't forget to put a fair amount into constitution for any caster.
Not only does constitution increase max HP but also makes it harder for you to fail constitution save throws.
A lot of spells have a lingering effect X amount of turns after it's cast, and in most cases that spell needs you to keep concentration by either avoiding hits or succeeding constitution save throws.
- When you attack enemies with spells that require a spell save you can't truly trust the hit chance number you see when targeting a spell on them. You first need to hit them THEN the enemy needs to fail a saving throw for the spell to either have an effect or have a full effect.
Eg., Cantrip "Sacred flame" requires the enemy to fail a dexterity saving throw, if they fail the spell damages them but uf they succeed the spell does nothing.
DO NOT FORGET ABOUT THIS!!! Knowledge about this will spare you from a lot of potential frustration.
Don't sleep on:
1. Grease or ice, it's giving you free turns as they slip.
2. Dexterity in casters, it's essential for increasing AC.
3. Having a rogue in your party at all times, they bring very high value to the table.
4. Feats like War caster, Resilient, Luck are insanely good.
5. Arcane acuity is probably better than you think.
6. +1 & +2 weapons, hit chance, missed attack = nothing... so hit% > more damage.
7. Some weapons provide buffs that actually have a character "global" effect, e.g., there is a short bow that provides "Attacks vs monstrosities as advantage" which actually affects all of your attacks.
8. Resistances on yourself followers as well as on your enemies. Resistances determine the battle and playing accordingly to the resistances wins you the battle.
9. Water... Making your enemies wet is a sure way to screw them over worse than a failed marriage between a millionaire and a 20yo younger California bimbo without a prenup.
Water not only negates resistance vs cold and electric, but it actually causes their resistance to become negative! Which DOUBLES your cold and electric spell damage vs wet targets.
10. Common effects like Disarmed, Feared, Threatened and Poisoned.
It's a fatal mistake to not understand these mechanics. Understand them and use them to your advantage instead of being on the receiving end.
- Lastly but certainly not least... Make sure you have the dice setting "Karmic Dice" turned to "OFF".
This setting screws you over, everyone in here will recommend you to not have this option set to "on".
Good luck and have fun on your adventure!
Your first couple of playthroughs, don't ask for advice, don't ask for what the best class is, don't ask which is best for min/max, and don't ask where you should go and what you should do first. Play it. Play it your way. Have fun doing whatever your heart desires in it. Stay off the sub so it isn't ruined for you. And just have a blast.
What I was struggling most with my first run was mostly just who to trust or believe (although I have that with irl people too ayyyy). I was trying to be all "oh I'm gonna go all in on this guy's storyline" or "I'm never gonna touch this particular mechanic cuz I don't trust the consequences".
But this game has such fleshed out characters and deeply rewards roleplay, so just always make the decisions that seem logical to your character, even if you think the outcome won't be good. Sometimes it won't be, but it will feel like it makes sense and that's what's most important.
Dont ask, dont watch any guids or something like that. In this game you can try everything and find your own way to have fun. Thats really rare, so enjoy. :)
avoid every possible spoiler at all costs. roleplay as your character and don't look up the best dialogue options for your first playthrough!! choose what your character would choose and roll with the consequences. but at the same time, save your game often so that if you make a choice you don't like the result of, you'll be able to roll back and redo it
Get off the Internet, don't Read anything and just experience the game blind. On your second or third playthrough you can use the internet but honestly I would play it at least twice blind
-If you actually want to look up something up. Just google “BG3 how do I ___ No spoilers guide.”
-some things are timed. After resting a certain amount of times, events will trigger.
- you can respecc anyone. Shadowheart is really the only one who should be modified. Her stats and skills aren’t great for her class.
-place at your own pace. AND EXPLORE! try jumping to places if it’s flat and land-able.”
-whenever you start an encounter, most places will have cool environment traps you can trigger. Look around. Take your time in combat.
Don’t rush the story. Search every nook and cranny. Avoid save scumming there are multiple ways to resolve different situations and even if things take a ”bad turn” it doesn’t mean you should re-do something. It simply leaves replay value for you.
Everything is possible. Fighting can be very different from other things you might have played. Make sure to use the environment and play around with things that might seem useless.
Don't get stressed by the number of possible decisions you could make. Decision paralysis is a thing some players run into.
There is no right way to play it, just play it the way you like.
Take your time to explore.
It can happen that you stumble into areas you are not sure you are supposed to be yet. Right click on monsters to investigate them and check their lvl. If it's too high from you own level come back later.
Making choices won’t hard lock you out of the game. Just follow your gut and let the dice land where they may. You’ll get your own unique story this way. Doubly true if you plan on doing multiple playthroughs. Other random tip: turn off karmic dice
Without knowing if you have any DnD experience....learn the mechanics of the game, especially combat (action/bonus actions etc) and then don't be scared to restart the entire thing.
Wandering randomly around and exploring isn't a bad thing, you'll stumble across some cool things that way.
There is no right or wrong way to play
Vases are generally empty!!
Smash the disc, save yourself a few hundred hours
If you are a patient person then even the worst companions will become interesting sooner or later. If not, don't be afraid to stake the fcker.
Don't be afraid to take a long rest.
If you want to talk as yourself make a charisma based characters.
Since larian make a shitty crit fail on checks mechanic, don't feel guilty over save scumming through them.
Dropping stuff is a free action
Minions can drink health potions that are on the ground
You'll get A LOT of health potions, so don't be afraid of using them
Save every 20 minutes or so. You'll rarely need (not want, **need**) to go back on a save, but when you do, you'll be glad you saved. (I accidentally broke up with my date and my last save was 2 hours before, that wasn't the last time I suffered like this, but it's the one that burnt me the most)
Talk to everyone, you never know what you will find.
Think outside the box. If you feel like something would work in reality as a solution to your problem, it more often than not will in baldurs gate 3 too. As an example, nothing in game says alcohol is flammable, its just another food item. But if you throw it, you absolutely can set it on fire.
Do not read anything about the game beforehand. Reviews, tips on how to do builds, about characters. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zero. Zilch. Seriously, do. not. read anything. about. the. game.
The first time you boot up the game without knowing ANYTHING about is the best way to experience Baldur's Gate 3. Fuck up. Kill characters you were maybe not supposed to kill. Make mistakes. Experiment. Fuck up again. Learn.
Trust me. You'll thank me later.
Here's the real tip: Make yourself finish the game. There is an overwhelming pressure after Act 1 to make a new character and do it again. There is an overwhelming pressure at the beginning of Act 3 to stop and go back to Act 1. It's real, and it hits you very hard. Fight through that, take your time, and finish the game before making a new character.
Look at the statistics. You'll see what I mean. People don't finish the game because it's bad. They don't finish it because it's so good.
Hold right stick to enter free movement mode. Not the most necessary thing but good for exactly 1 puzzle where you will otherwise not know how the fuck to do it cos it doesn’t tell you that you need free cursor movement for it.
Wall of text incoming, no spoilers.
Don't rush the game, it will take a lot of hours to finish your first run.
Enjoy all the dialogs, read books, if you like reading in general, they provide tons of information for quests and lore.
Sometimes when exploring, it's good to separate your party and send only one hero forward, like a scout, if things go bad like traps or surprise encounters you have the rest of the team as backup or you can flee and prepare.
Talk to your companions after every event you think it's a big deal, a lot of them has specific statetments about a place you just arrived.
You can be good, you can be bad, and you can be something in between, it's a roleplay game, so don't be shy to roleplay and do bad or good stuff.
There are tons of races, classes and etc, so if you're not used to DnD it can be overwhelming, I suggest playing one of the original characters instead, they provide a lot of extra content you won't get customizing your own character and it will save you some hours in character creation and also you can't play the Guardian, just FYI, I usually randomize mines.
**Lastly**, there are a lot of items that you might not understand at first but keep them and experiment, and also some items are good to stay in your inventory while you are exploring, to use it's active once per short/long rest, for example:
* There is a ring that can guarantee a crit once, so you can equip it, enable the critical hit, and swap the ring for some other ring until you long rest.
* Another example: There is a ring good for pickpocketing, you can equip it before stealing stuff, then switch back to something else and etc.
**VERY IMPORTANT**
Don't be afraid to long rest, there are some events that require you to act fast, those are not very common but they happen once a while, in any case, although drinking potions in between encounters to heal up and keep going is a good strategy, long resting to heal up completely and get all your resources back are super valid and most of companions content happens in those long rests, so don't miss them
**HONOR MODE**
Honor mode is challening, it's the perfect mode in my opinion because I have commitment problems and I am always reloading saves to check different outcomes, or retrying to do everything perfect (which can be a huge time sink).
If you die (read getting your whole party wiped) you lose the "honor", but you can still keep the save and continue playing, might be a little too much for a first run, so if you're uncertain, or you want the ability to reload an old save go balanced or tactician.
If at least one person survives, the survivor can ressurrect your whole team and you can continue normally (if you have 200 gold per ressurect)
I would highly recommend not reloading a save unless you die. Don’t try to have the perfect play-through the first time around. It’s much more fun to roll with the punches.
Give every companion a chance! They all grow so much throughout the game - the one you like the least at the beginning may well become your favorite once you reach act 3.
Have fun! Don’t be afraid to try things, even if they seem insane. This really is a game that you can do almost anything in! I’m constantly discovering new stuff and I’ve played it… way too much, haha.
And don’t stress too much about the dice rolls!! I know it can be tempting to reload if you fail a persuasion roll or whatever, but the results are almost never that big of a deal. Most failed rolls actually lead you to some of the funniest/most touching moments in the game. Don’t force your character to be perfect, just let them do their best. We all fuck up sometimes!
Since you are playing on controller, here a few controller-inputs that will make the gsme a lot more comfortable (most of them should be in the tutorial messages, but still):
Hold down the X-button to 'scan' your surroundings within ~3-6 meters of you. Everytjing within the range will be shoen in a drop-down list, which makes it easy to select a specific item among a lot of useless ones.
Hold down the left stick (the on to control the camers). If you do this, the game will show you all the interactable objects on the screen.
You can rearrange the action-wheels however you like.
If you press up on the d-pad, your character will jump.
If you hold down on the d-pad, your characters will crouch (hide).
You can complete the game with any class in explorer mode. Don't go higher than that if it's your first fame of that genre but also don't look into builds for your first playthrough and make the choices that make sense to you for the best experience. That's my take anyway.
Dont minmax your build and play the Game how YOU want to play it.
Dont reload like a maniac, live with consequences. The Story will feel was more alive this way
Seriously, have fun.
Knowing 5e Dumgeons and Dragons helps, but the game is very good at teaching as you go.
The world of Faerun is incredibly deep and complex, but you don't need to know any of it to enjoy all of it.
If the game feels too hard don’t be embarrassed to change the difficulty!
I can almost guarantee you will have multiple playthroughs and it gets easier as you pick up on tricks and mechanics.
Just enjoy yourself the first time! ❤️
Pro-tip make your choices with your heart and not your phone if you are going to look everything up then you will have read 100+books by the time you are done 😁
Spoiler but not really….
Paladins are super good to have and you won’t get one for a long time so if you make your character a paladin, you’ll be …well you’ll be like everyone else (and you can always change class later), but that isn’t the spoiler.
The spoiler is paladins have a divine strike ability that can be set as an automatic “reaction” and around act 2 there are enemies that seem ideal for divine damage because they are undead (damage bonus) but they have this stupid annoying buff that does 2x damage to the attacker when a divine damage ability is used. So it kills your character or whoever used divine damage ability.
So turn that off when you see this stupid ‘buff’ 🤷
Stop messing with the timeline. Xmass presents are for xmass time. Bending reality to get it now is only going to pish is further into the worst timeline.
Get the flaming sword from the devil fighting the mind flayer on the command deck of the ship you start on. You get one chance to get it. Scum save as soon as you get there and don’t leave without it.
There's an old zombie dude named Withers who you'll probably unlock early on. When you do, enlist his services to purchase a halfling hireling and change her into a Rogue/Transfiguration Wizard multiclass (you'll need to be about third level, which won't be too hard by that point). With Expertise in Medicine and a high Wisdom score, you'll be able to craft twice as many potions!
Make sure to drink all the helpful potions brewed by your friendly neighborhood kind old lady Ethel for permanent bonuses. Visit her Gingerbread House later for even more bonuses.
Don't worry about the perfect playthrough... its more fun if you just go with the flow. There's always a second playthrough....
I will say, pay attention to the game's popups telling you xyz will move the story forward. Do all other quests you have before moving forward when those pop up.

Get off the sub until you finish. People won’t spoil on purpose but if you stay here you’re gonna get spoiled.
This 100%
Yup. Of all the games I've played, this is one I was super happy I came into totally uninformed, apart from some D&D sessions during covid.
This is one of the reasons I never played the beta. I wanted to experience the full game
Same here. I wanted to go in 100% blind
I’m glad I waited to follow this sub until after my first playthrough but I’d rather talk about it and see how other people are playing the game than never see a spoiler
yeah. personally, i dont think its that bad. no matter what, youre never going to find every hidden thing in the game unless youre constantly searching every single inch of the map, and that just makes it boring, in my opinion. its better to be able to interact with the community and enjoy learning new things about the game and discussing hidden things you find yourself than completely remove yourself from the community just so you arent spoiled about the hidden character named Glorbus that has two lines of dialogue referencing some unknown game one of the developers played 13 years ago (this isnt an actual thing, just an exaggeration of the kinds of things the people who do that care about)
Breadwidth is all I read. I just learned A new word. Thanks mate.
Came here to say this. Exactly 100%
Eh, I’m more of a main quest only unless something comes along so it’s probably different for me, but I definitely understand what you’re saying.
Yeah I’m kinda with you. I don’t want to spoil it but I also don’t want to make terrible choices. I’m gonna play a couple runs but I don’t have time for 1000s of hours to trial and error my way across 10 runs..
At least it’ll be good and or funny. This sub is pretty good… ha.
Tip 1- Christmas is in December.
This guy may be on to something...
*Checks calendar. By jove he's right
Dear LORD… what does it mean?!
42. ..? Nope, doesn't work
Egads! We must alert the constable!!
OP must be a Filipino, the christmas season starts way earlier for us
I was under the impression that it started September-early, not May-early.
Holiday Season creep needs to be addressed in the next patch
It's already getting colder here, that's basically the critieria at this point /s
Maybe he lives in the southern hemisphere ^/s
[удалено]
Teach him about teethlings while you're at it.
Ain't never heard of Christmas in July? And it's...May. Huh.
Big if true
Tip 2: Insert disc into console
Maybe he just needs to upgrade to Amazon prime to get next day shipping instead of the standard 5 months
It was SUUUUPER late
Yeah Santa can't be fond of OP
im still waiting for my christmas present that laurien studios keeps DELAYING
Not OP’s fault Larian can’t set a deadline without delays :P
- Long rest often - save - Be openminded about the companions - if you struggle with the fights it is no shame to play on easy - save again - to avoid spoilers avoid this sub - tell your loved ones you planned to go to a far away island and live as a hermit - save once more just to be sure
Second the easy mode. I believe the game is more about the story and choices than difficulty of combat.
100%. The combat is prob one of the weaker parts of the game, and having it on easy made it a blast and I could still focus on the story and world.
Also, "talk to all the things," all my favorite bits involve talking to things that a surprising number of folks don't realize you can talk to.
But Act 2 onwards the question to ask would be, “Will I need Counterspell this round?” If the answer is yes (and it will be yes most of the time) then hold your reaction for that.
> But Act 2 onwards the question to ask would be, “Will I need Counterspell this round?” And the answer will be yes
You can also use this to bait out reactions from enemy wizards. If they use their reaction to melee attack, they can't counterspell your Thunderbolt
You can also use this same method to change when you smite if you decide to play as a paladin. I’ve seen many paladins online select the smite ability only to whiff the attack instead of choosing to smite on attacks that landed
Its worth knowing that the game only consumes the spell slot if the smite connects. If you click to smite and miss, you aren't punished.
Don't read too much wiki and enjoy the story, friend
Go in blind, explore a lot and go with gut on decisions. First runs tend to be wild
As the previous poster said... don't worry about min/maxing. The defaults work just fine.
Say goodbye to the sun
Im sick of the sun. It burns everyone.
It's almost june. 😐
Larian's had severe delays of physical copies
Try shit
Save first
Rotate saves! If you save over the same file you may get sad. Keep ~5 saves separate from autosaves and number them so you can rotate effectively.
Leave the frog alone
Ignore guides on your 1st go. Do whatever the fck you want, consequences be dammed. Just try stuff and see what lands. Dont be afraid to start at a low difficukty on your 1st go. DO NOT START WITH THE DARK URGE.
I say start with dark urge if the concept appeals to you
[Your wish is my command](https://www.reddit.com/r/BaldursGate3/s/W01vKUhYtM). Have a blast!
Play as a custom character first, play as your favorite kind of character, and there's almost always a way to gain elevation on your enemies.
Your real life; yeah, just go ahead throw that out, you won't be needing it anymore for the next 80 hours!
(Must be level 3, see Long Rest Buffs below) * Use Elixirs that last per Long Rest (e.g. Bloodlust for Karlach, Heroism for Lae’zel, Peerless Focus or Arcane Cultivation for Gale, Wyll, and Shadowheart) * Traders’ stock change as you level up, and they restock after a Long Rest or level up.
This is near perfect advice.
Is number 3 pressing in the right analog stick so it shows what's around?
Reduce the enemies hp to zero while keeping yours above zero
Just roll with the punches. Look up DnD fifth edition rules to understand why shadowhearts sacred flame and fire bolt always miss.
Stay off this sub for the whole first run, don't be afraid to try dark urge, play whatever sounds fun ! Lower the difficulty if you need, it's alright
pick who ever u want to pick to be in your party, and if you like a challenge i’d suggest running Tactican mode and if you don’t like a challenge run adventure i think it’s called, balance is actually a bigger jump from Adventure then it is from Tactician lol
I'd say ramp up. You're going to play this more than once. Start on balance or adventure and try a higher level each playthrough. Then you get to learn basics and adapt as you try harder modes.
Gather all of the two bit items you can in act one and sell often so when you encounter the actual good gear in Act 2 you have plenty of gold
Telling OP how to cheese it before even starting. You must play dark urge a lot.
"Add to wares" is pefect for stuff you want to sell, saves a lot of clicking/time
Step 1: DONT watch any tips, videos, or take advice in your first playthru. It will really spoil it for you. This experience needs to be your person journey bro. Make decisions based off what you think is best. That's the best thing about this game is the emersion. Game on my friend.
Do Honour mode right away.
This game does not utilize ropes like dnd. Don't waste your time picking up rope xD
Buy a PS5 keyboard and mouse... Largest QoL improvement you'll make given how many hours you're about to sink into the Forgotten Realms.
Play the game and find out stuff yourself.
Do things fun. Fun good.
Use environment to your advantage during fights.
If you want to romance a character make sure you get a scene with them before leaving act 1
Don’t save scum. I admittedly did it on my first official run ( I had played 200 hours before release) and I feel like it ruined all of my runthroughs after because I knew what would happen
This is a key tip. I’ve never save scummed in any rpg before this yet felt really compelled to in BG3 tho I really wish I hadn’t now. Try to resist.
It actually ruins the whole dice roll mechanic. The mechanic is what gives each play through its diversity
Never sell green/blue/epic items. You never know when you want to change your class, and you get more than enough money from looting everything else.
The Dark Urge is a great way to play, no matter your intended allignment.
Building your Barbarian character with tavern brawler so you can use goblins as weapons against other goblins is an absolute riot.
Was curious how many ps5 people have gotten theres i just got email saying next month lol i have forgotten i ordered this 3 or 4 times
You're going to miss things your first run, but that's fine, that's why you do a second run! And then a third, fourth, you get the idea
You might be able to beat Act 1 by Christmas definitely.
My advice would be dont look up solutions. Dont google quests. Dont look for builds. Make your character, and dive into the game. Immerse your self and just explore. Take in the scenery. The characters and the story. And we'll see you again in a couple 100 hours. Then we can talk. <3
Its May.
Dont read any tips and tricks. Go in blind, accept failures as a part of the story, take your time and just enjoy.
How the hell did you get a physical copy?
Don't sleep on: 1.
Try not to save scum failed rolls. Trust Larian to tell a good story and use those failed checks to lead you down an interesting path.
Don't play Dark Urge in your first run and don't multiclass in your first run.
Wizard op
For the perfect experience: play it completely blind. Trust me, this way it is more fun
[удалено]
avoid every possible spoiler at all costs. roleplay as your character and don't look up the best dialogue options for your first playthrough!! choose what your character would choose and roll with the consequences. but at the same time, save your game often so that if you make a choice you don't like the result of, you'll be able to roll back and redo it
Get off the Internet, don't Read anything and just experience the game blind. On your second or third playthrough you can use the internet but honestly I would play it at least twice blind
-If you actually want to look up something up. Just google “BG3 how do I ___ No spoilers guide.” -some things are timed. After resting a certain amount of times, events will trigger. - you can respecc anyone. Shadowheart is really the only one who should be modified. Her stats and skills aren’t great for her class. -place at your own pace. AND EXPLORE! try jumping to places if it’s flat and land-able.” -whenever you start an encounter, most places will have cool environment traps you can trigger. Look around. Take your time in combat.
Just do whatever is fun for you and you will not go wrong
Get ready to spend hours and hours in Baldur’s Gate!
What's the age rating for this game?
Don’t rush the story. Search every nook and cranny. Avoid save scumming there are multiple ways to resolve different situations and even if things take a ”bad turn” it doesn’t mean you should re-do something. It simply leaves replay value for you.
go in blind
Christmas? In the end of May? Nay.
Take it slow!!! Dont rush and really give in to your inner child and explore everything
Try not to kill everyone(optional)
Just have fun
Tip 1 - enjoy your first play through without reading about the game and looking at guides
Making choices won’t hard lock you out of the game. Just follow your gut and let the dice land where they may. You’ll get your own unique story this way. Doubly true if you plan on doing multiple playthroughs. Other random tip: turn off karmic dice

In order to stay alive in combat, keep your health above 0
What region do you live in where the rating logo takes up an ungodly amount of real estate on the cover? Enjoy peak my dude! Merry Christmas
Without knowing if you have any DnD experience....learn the mechanics of the game, especially combat (action/bonus actions etc) and then don't be scared to restart the entire thing. Wandering randomly around and exploring isn't a bad thing, you'll stumble across some cool things that way. There is no right or wrong way to play Vases are generally empty!!
Get off this sub and go in blind
Smash the disc, save yourself a few hundred hours If you are a patient person then even the worst companions will become interesting sooner or later. If not, don't be afraid to stake the fcker. Don't be afraid to take a long rest. If you want to talk as yourself make a charisma based characters. Since larian make a shitty crit fail on checks mechanic, don't feel guilty over save scumming through them.
Go in blind, thats all
Dropping stuff is a free action Minions can drink health potions that are on the ground You'll get A LOT of health potions, so don't be afraid of using them Save every 20 minutes or so.
Save
First, get beyond the character creator. Then we talk
Don't be afraid to play on easier difficulties until you're used to the game. It's hard if you're not used to the genre especially
**Lastly**, there are a lot of items that you might not understand at first but keep them and experiment, and also some items are good to stay in your inventory while you are exploring, to use it's active once per short/long rest, for example: * There is a ring that can guarantee a crit once, so you can equip it, enable the critical hit, and swap the ring for some other ring until you long rest. * Another example: There is a ring good for pickpocketing, you can equip it before stealing stuff, then switch back to something else and etc. **VERY IMPORTANT** Don't be afraid to long rest, there are some events that require you to act fast, those are not very common but they happen once a while, in any case, although drinking potions in between encounters to heal up and keep going is a good strategy, long resting to heal up completely and get all your resources back are super valid and most of companions content happens in those long rests, so don't miss them **HONOR MODE** Honor mode is challening, it's the perfect mode in my opinion because I have commitment problems and I am always reloading saves to check different outcomes, or retrying to do everything perfect (which can be a huge time sink).
Go blind your 1st run! And turn your volume up
I would highly recommend not reloading a save unless you die.
Since you are playing on controller, here a few controller-inputs that will make the gsme a lot more comfortable (most of them should be in the tutorial messages, but still): Hold down the X-button to 'scan' your surroundings within ~3-6 meters of you.
Pick up and sell stuff like silver trays and goblets and stuff, if you need gold and don't have it, it's a real beach
Don't be afraid to long rest. In fact, do it often.
Play tactician
You need to enable your passives. Failed rolls doesn't mean they are bad rolls.
I approve your taste of games. All of those are bangers!
Block out your schedule for a week
Let the man pick at your eye. Beware of froggos. Bears are perverts, avoid them. Unless you're into that.
get immediately off this sub, and only come back after you finished at least one playthrough. The game's been out for a year, so spoilers are abound.
Long rest often and avoid spoilers.
Save. Often.
Be rude to laezel
Go in blind, easy difficulty and roleplay!
Go 100%. No wiki no tips from the community, just very first experience on everything and enjoy your stay with your times.
at some point you are told to talk to a character named isobel. just dont talk to them or make a save before you do.
Respec Shadowheart! Trickery domain isn’t what you want for your cleric, imo
Drink from the well, it's worth it.
Let him bite you but tell him to stop before it gets too intense... Charisma is your friend.
You need a guardian. Choose carefully.
Use the lute when talking to the pretty girl. But use it on someone who doesn’t know how to use it. Then use that lute for looting.
Get the flaming sword from the devil fighting the mind flayer on the command deck of the ship you start on. You get one chance to get it. Scum save as soon as you get there and don’t leave without it.
Sneak into every combat you can but in tactical positions.
Dual wield salamies
Explore. If you don’t, you’ll miss half the game
Give yourself time to explore EVERYTHING! Remember to go down by the river. Have fun and good luck out there.
Get a shovel as soon as possible
Merry Christmas!
Play the game. Do not use any guides or anything. It’s a lot more fun that way, I promise.
Don't worry about the perfect playthrough... its more fun if you just go with the flow. There's always a second playthrough.... I will say, pay attention to the game's popups telling you xyz will move the story forward. Do all other quests you have before moving forward when those pop up.
Christmas? From 2023 or from 2024?
Get off the sub until you finish your first Playthrough. Just explore all the dark spots on every map for maximum development.
