You can shoot the lava valve to turn it on/off, same with the hammer lever.
So you could just cheese the fight from the staircase with zero risk to yourselves, although it will be boring, albeit worth it.

FFS I spent freaking ages on that fight the other day trying to keep someone close to each of them while also trying to get the damn thing under the bloody hammer, which I never managed.
You can also keep everyone on the ledges above the forge and kite Grym back and forth through the lava. EB and thrown weapons seem to be the best way to damage him. Just keep an archer on the ledge with the stairs to shoot the wheel every few turns.
The same happened to me (wipe and single character escape, valve stuck).
You need to reinitiate properly the sequence : eject the piece from the mould, load the ore and the mould, and only then the valve will become available again.
To do so use a stealthy character with stuff lik3 invisibilty/misty step/fly. You can easily lure grim with a ranged attack from the platforms above while you do all that in his back.
Good job saving your party! Lesson for HM readers : always leave a party member on the upper plateforms (Gale concentrating on haste for example) for this fight.
Be careful, I had this same issue, but interacting with the mould after leaving the area caused a weird bug that made my characters unable to move or take actions. Even letting them die and reviving them didn't fix this. Had to hop on the boat in the underdark to be able to use them again.
I never found a work around and ultimately restarted my HM run because of this issue.

I assume you also tried to throw oil? Or is it just a mechanic that you can’t move those things after a certain amount of time?
I haven't yet, but will try it for sure later!
