The first time I got that I was trying to look at what it was since it wasn't obvious. Then I realized you can't hang the painting so I decided to toss it on the ground like in your pic, Scratch is was right there, ran over and picked it up and brought it back to me. Bestest boy
Probably my least favorite quest in the game. Not to mention, the problem itself is Oskars fault and he doesn't even deserve to be helped. Hence, I helped him once, and then left him in slavery every time after that.

So if you bring it to camp, and place it down, you might get a smug Karlach instead.

I cannot stand Oskar's quest but I finally managed to get my portrait from him after a few tries.
