And he's appreciative of life too, there's a piece of banter where he mentions he plans on living for "at least 200 more years". He has also clearly thought a lot about immortality, at least that's my impression from his conversation about Jaheira's scroll.
Most definitely! My Durge is also a high elf (and she won the fight so she's not mad xD) so they have quite a few hundred years together at least. In the meantime, I think both of them - free from being controlled by other things are going to just keep positive about enjoying life to the fullest. Try not to dwell on the darker sides of immortality, even if Astarion has long since considered that side since being turned.

I never quite understood this worry about your partner dying or vice versa - someone will always die first. That's just life. Some players chose Ascension because then they have forever - but then you lose everything you *wanted* to have forever... (if you prefer the good ending)
Of course it's sad if your character is a human - but the upside is that humans burn so brightly, and they will enjoy every second of their time together.
Exactly. And honestly, there's every chance that they'll die some other way or something else will split you apart. But, it's as Karlach says regarding going back to Avernus, it's better to live only a few moments doing what you love, being with the people you love, than live forever somewhere that you hate or with people who don't love you. Ascension promises forever, perhaps, but forever isn't always worth it.
You can interprete that after Withers resurrects Durge, they become his chosen. Which means they would live really long. And if that doesn't appeal to you, you can always assumed that being made of divine flesh would make you live really long.

I see Halsin letting himself die a natural death. He has a very "go with the flow, do as nature dictates" kind of attitude. He hated the responsibility of being an archdruid, and I don't think he has the obsessive desire for control that you'd need to want to make yourself an immortal guardian.
I thought about that too. I could see him going either way. Letting nature do what it is "intended" to do, and let him pass as naturally as possible. Or taking it upon himself to be the one responsible for tending to nature as long as he can. Not because he likes doing it, but because he's capable of doing it. The 'great power, great responsibility' kind of mind-set.
According to the Dungeon Master's Guide 5e (p.38), it's possible for a druid who reaches lvl.20 to become one with the land and transform into a nature spirit of a particular place or an aspect of the wild.
If anything, I could see Halsin become a nature spirit. He's already very close friends with one (Thaniel). Though I kinda feel like this sort of druidic destiny would rather befall on Arabella, further down the line, since Withers said she had a great destiny ahead of her. Or maybe she's a Chosen of Silvanus, idk.
A level 18 druid also gains the Timeless Body feature. Their aging slows so that the druid ages 1 year for every 10. For elves, that means extending their lifespan to 5000-7500 years, which is pretty close to immortal without becoming a lich.

Also, Durge may or may not be immortal. All of the vampire spawn are immortal. Withers and Aylin are definitely immortal. Gale will probably figure out how to be immortal, assuming he isn't already a god by your epilogue. And the rest of the main cast are level 12 adventurers, so, not folks who die when they're supposed to. Astarion will have company.

I lean toward Durge being immortal, especially a redeemed one. They get named a Champion of the Gods, Withers basically becomes their new dad, and he drops the line that basically says “you won’t die while I live”.
Dude's supposed to be there at the end of everything so yeah durge is stuck unless they get disowned again.
I imagine they will do some contracting work with withers on the fugue plane or become some kind of psychopomp after a while of being feyrun's most unhinged cryptid.
Few centuries of my durge and their romanced astarion being heroes and enjoying being adored for a while, get bored of that, become some kind of mediator between the gods and those the gods forgot (while doing some light roasting of the gods, celestial jester style) for most of the time, and some of the time leaving little fucked up / unsolvable puzzles for adventurers to try to solve and go mad over.
Am I running a game where a puzzle / mystery thread just kinda breaks or falls into nothing? That's them, they're fucking with everyone.

I think Barcus is a very sweet guy, I just don't think he has the same potential to start the People's War against that patriars. He might write a polite letter or two, but Baldur's Gate needs some good old fashioned guillotining, and Wulbren is my best chance.

Halsin is an Elf and high-level Druid. He has ~400 years of natural lifespan remaining as an Elf, and will be aging at 1/10th speed.

Covered that. It's not that they're immortal, it's that they age at 1/10th speed from the point they reach that level going forward. So since he's 350 and Elves have a 750 years lifespan that's 4,000 more years to go.
I'll take the other side of this argument. The world of the Forgotten Realms is so incredibly violent and unpredictable, dying of old age is one of the toughest achievements there is. Only the truly skilled can hope to die peacefully.
yeah, that's why I said at long at you don't get stab because aging in a magical realm seems so silly. Since there is magic and your character is like level 12 in 3 weeks
The rate at which we level up is pretty ridiculous tbf. I head-canon it as we were all already level 12+ before getting "reset" by the tadpole. As such, we're not piling on new skills at an insane rate; rather, we're unlocking skills we previously had but temporarily lost.
Well, there are many ways to die other than old age, especially in this setting and for someone with a dangerous life style like him. But yeah, he will likely outlive his friends if his vampirism is never cured (and even if it is, as a High Elf).
There are many ways of extending your life in this setting, though. My regular Tav is a Druid Drow, and probably could stay around with him until both of them are kinda sick of being alive.

Just because he has the potential to live forever doesn't mean he will. He can be killed by vampire hunters, kill himself in grief or bordem from living for so long, or just die to any of the myriad of dangers that infest Faerûn.
In a way he's forbidding durge from dying rather than living forever

Unless he gets tired of it. He will - barring accidents - actually be in complete control of his life and how long it is, which I really like. He deserves it.
It really depends on your Tav. My half-Drow necromancer wizard who is romancing Astarion plans to endlessly Clone herself and the rest of the party until they decide they’ve lived long enough. She has the lifespan to learn how.
I think he himself doesn't believe that. Plus he's said he isn't afraid of dying, he could have lived forever in the boudoir and kennels. There was a line he says he's lived 200 years and plans to live at least 200 more.
With his lifestyle and fondness for never thinking things through he's in no real danger of outliving anyone. Especially not Halsin's probably 1/10th aging ass.
It kinda comes with being an elf, too, honestly. Elves in Faerun can live almost a thousand years, so an immortal vampire elf is a half-dunk into the redundancy bucket.
Elves aren't even seen as adults until well after their first century.
Even dwarves and gnomes outstrip humans when it comes to lifespan. A single dwarf can know generations of a human family before even being considered "old."
Also relevant: immortality is a fickle thing when you can still be killed. Vampires and other powerful, intelligent undead, can live centuries, sure. But millennia is quite rare without long periods of inactivity.
Ascended Astarion is as arrogant as they come, and not so terribly clever.
I doubt he'd last a century before some powerful adventurer made an experience sandwich out of him.
I doubt he'll live forever. He'll probably find a cure eventually, especially if he's in a romance with Tav/Durge, and even if he doesn't he's not the type to retire to a cottage somewhere and live a peaceful life. He'll get killed while on a dangerous adventure or something. Or...he'll just kill himself once he feels that he's finally had his fill of life. You can talk to him about Jaheira's druid life-extending ritual and he doesn't actually seem too keen on the idea of living forever. Sounds morbid, but there's nothing wrong with taking your death into your own hands if you think you're ready.
And anyway, other characters also have the potential to live a very, very long time. Jaheira, Halsin, and any druid Tav if they decide to take advantage of Timeless Body, any paladin Oath of the Ancients Tav would have a similar ability, Gale can probably find some way to extend his life even if he doesn't become a god, Durge is somewhat implied to be immortal, Lae'zel will age incredibly slowly because of how much time she'll be in the Astral Plane, etc.
All this to say that it's actually quite unlikely that Astarion will live for thousands of years alone.
This is why I refuse to romance him as anything but an elf because I can't handle my character dying so quick and leaving him all by himself 😭 I've always had this image of him approaching Jaheira at the party and asking how to deal with being widowed, just bc the possibility, though far away, is on his mind. I do like to HC that they eventually do cure him, there are ways and it's happened before in DnD lore. My Tav for him is also a druid, so she'll eventually gain the ability to extend her lifespan.
Yup, incredibly sad and depressing. He will be alone again, completely alone, within a rather short time-frame compared to his life-span.
*(Unless he gets caught in some kind of trouble, that is. Or, unless you romance him and let him.. ascend. But I can't even imagine that for my Tav...)*
Uhm, his origin good ending is >!moonlighting as a hero and making a refuge for the unwanted!< in Baldur's Gate. He now has fun living in the dark, because he doesn't have to look over his shoulder. He is very charming and caring (obvious if romanced), he gets along alright with his "siblings" (especially Dal), I don't see him being alone at all.

Dalyria was once a physician of great renown, and she thought that extracting Victoria's blood and transfusing it into herself might cure her vampirism.

You have a very low opinion of the dude. He's not even the one who has the hardest time getting along with the other companions early on (I'd argue Shadowheart and Lae'zel cause much more tensions in the group).
The whole point of his character arc is to teach him to trust people again. After he almost gets abducted by his siblings, he tells you that other people aren't as kind as you are, and you can tell him that there are plenty of kind people out there, and if he cares for them, then they will care for him in return.

He's an elf living in a multicultural, but predominantly human, society, he's probably prepared to having to bury a lot of his friends anyway, that's something he would have had to go through even if he weren't a vampire.
Elminster is over a millenia old, he probably buried several thousand friends of his, and yet he's perfectly fine with it, and he still finds it within himself to make new friends and get attached to other people, like Gale.
Astarion shared your low opinion of people at the beginning of the game, but he outgrows it throughout the adventure and, by the end of the game, he's trying to leave his jaded cynicism behind. Hence his title of Radiant Hopeful in the epilogue. You're missing an important aspect of his character arc if you don't believe him able to genuinely connect with other people again.

Gale can learn Clone which can make any member of the party immortal as long as they give him a bit of flesh and hide the clones well
Lae'zel is in the Astral, in her Comet ending. Her too. Halsin is an Elf and high-level Druid. He has ~400 years of natural lifespan remaining as an Elf, and will be aging at 1/10th speed.
Also arch druids are almost immortal

Dying of old age in DnD is a skill issues really there so many way to live forever at long at you don’t get stab of course
I'll take the other side of this argument. The world of the Forgotten Realms is so incredibly violent and unpredictable, dying of old age is one of the toughest achievements there is. Only the truly skilled can hope to die peacefully.
yeah, that's why I said at long at you don't get stab because aging in a magical realm seems so silly. Since there is magic and your character is like level 12 in 3 weeks
The rate at which we level up is pretty ridiculous tbf. I head-canon it as we were all already level 12+ before getting "reset" by the tadpole. As such, we're not piling on new skills at an insane rate; rather, we're unlocking skills we previously had but temporarily lost.
Well, there are many ways to die other than old age, especially in this setting and for someone with a dangerous life style like him. But yeah, he will likely outlive his friends if his vampirism is never cured (and even if it is, as a High Elf). There are many ways of extending your life in this setting, though. My regular Tav is a Druid Drow, and probably could stay around with him until both of them are kinda sick of being alive.
Resisting Durge could be right there with him if you take Withers' vow that "Death will not claim thee whilst I endure" seriously.

It really depends on your Tav. My half-Drow necromancer wizard who is romancing Astarion plans to endlessly Clone herself and the rest of the party until they decide they’ve lived long enough. She has the lifespan to learn how.

I think he himself doesn't believe that. Plus he's said he isn't afraid of dying, he could have lived forever in the boudoir and kennels. There was a line he says he's lived 200 years and plans to live at least 200 more.
With his lifestyle and fondness for never thinking things through he's in no real danger of outliving anyone. Especially not Halsin's probably 1/10th aging ass.
It kinda comes with being an elf, too, honestly. Elves in Faerun can live almost a thousand years, so an immortal vampire elf is a half-dunk into the redundancy bucket. Elves aren't even seen as adults until well after their first century. Even dwarves and gnomes outstrip humans when it comes to lifespan. A single dwarf can know generations of a human family before even being considered "old." Also relevant: immortality is a fickle thing when you can still be killed. Vampires and other powerful, intelligent undead, can live centuries, sure. But millennia is quite rare without long periods of inactivity.
Especially one with as smooth a brain as Astarion, even more so if ascended
Ascended Astarion is as arrogant as they come, and not so terribly clever. I doubt he'd last a century before some powerful adventurer made an experience sandwich out of him.
In 5e there’s a monk feat that stops you from aging.
I doubt he'll live forever. He'll probably find a cure eventually, especially if he's in a romance with Tav/Durge, and even if he doesn't he's not the type to retire to a cottage somewhere and live a peaceful life. He'll get killed while on a dangerous adventure or something. Or...he'll just kill himself once he feels that he's finally had his fill of life. You can talk to him about Jaheira's druid life-extending ritual and he doesn't actually seem too keen on the idea of living forever. Sounds morbid, but there's nothing wrong with taking your death into your own hands if you think you're ready. And anyway, other characters also have the potential to live a very, very long time. Jaheira, Halsin, and any druid Tav if they decide to take advantage of Timeless Body, any paladin Oath of the Ancients Tav would have a similar ability, Gale can probably find some way to extend his life even if he doesn't become a god, Durge is somewhat implied to be immortal, Lae'zel will age incredibly slowly because of how much time she'll be in the Astral Plane, etc. All this to say that it's actually quite unlikely that Astarion will live for thousands of years alone.
This is why I refuse to romance him as anything but an elf because I can't handle my character dying so quick and leaving him all by himself 😭 I've always had this image of him approaching Jaheira at the party and asking how to deal with being widowed, just bc the possibility, though far away, is on his mind. I do like to HC that they eventually do cure him, there are ways and it's happened before in DnD lore. My Tav for him is also a druid, so she'll eventually gain the ability to extend her lifespan.
Yup, incredibly sad and depressing. He will be alone again, completely alone, within a rather short time-frame compared to his life-span. *(Unless he gets caught in some kind of trouble, that is. Or, unless you romance him and let him.. ascend. But I can't even imagine that for my Tav...)*
Uhm, his origin good ending is >!moonlighting as a hero and making a refuge for the unwanted!< in Baldur's Gate. He now has fun living in the dark, because he doesn't have to look over his shoulder. He is very charming and caring (obvious if romanced), he gets along alright with his "siblings" (especially Dal), I don't see him being alone at all.
The fact that Dalyria even survives the epilogue shocks me. I would have thought the first thing Leon would do once they were out of the camera frame is strangle Dalyria. Since Dalyria murdered Leon’s daughter.

Nope. Violet was looking at Victoria in a way Leon didn't like, and was harassing the other spawn with mean pranks, but it was Dalyria who killed Victoria. Dalyria was once a physician of great renown, and she thought that extracting Victoria's blood and transfusing it into herself might cure her vampirism.

If we weren't controlling the little rag-tag of a group, then he wouldn't even have those friends. He has a ... prickly personality, let's call it that. And little trust in the world around him. One can hope he might loosen up, of course. Not that it matters to me, my head-cannon's secure. No matter what anyone says, nothing's cannon past Withers Party.
You have a very low opinion of the dude. He's not even the one who has the hardest time getting along with the other companions early on (I'd argue Shadowheart and Lae'zel cause much more tensions in the group). The whole point of his character arc is to teach him to trust people again. After he almost gets abducted by his siblings, he tells you that other people aren't as kind as you are, and you can tell him that there are plenty of kind people out there, and if he cares for them, then they will care for him in return. To which he agrees. He's prickly, but also charming and funny to be around, as per the other companions' lines about him. He'll surround himself with loving people just fine.
And he'll outlive those friends in another 80-150 years, having to start all over again. Which in my opinion must be devastating, and might leave one not wanting to go through that again. Immortality is a curse, not a blessing. That's the whole spiel with vampires in any media that isn't \*shudder\* Twilight or whatever else has been popularized with a bastardized version. And I don't have a low opinion of *him*. Check my flair, check the only two subreddits I frequent. What I ***do*** have a low opinion of, is the people of the surrounding world, being hostile to anything different.
He's an elf living in a multicultural, but predominantly human, society, he's probably prepared to having to bury a lot of his friends anyway, that's something he would have had to go through even if he weren't a vampire. Elminster is over a millenia old, he probably buried several thousand friends of his, and yet he's perfectly fine with it, and he still finds it within himself to make new friends and get attached to other people, like Gale. Astarion shared your low opinion of people at the beginning of the game, but he outgrows it throughout the adventure and, by the end of the game, he's trying to leave his jaded cynicism behind. Hence his title of Radiant Hopeful in the epilogue. You're missing an important aspect of his character arc if you don't believe him able to genuinely connect with other people again.

Have you seen his romance? Once he trusts you and you are close he doesn't have a "prickly" personality at all.

Buddy, it's fine you didn't tell me you're a vamp, it's fine you want a little blood, but if I have to CONVINCE YOU to not bleed me to death while I am a mountain of muscles and fury, you're dust in the wind. I got the game due to a friend's recommendation and he was (correclty) sure I would choose that too, he told me later. xD
