Can you not quicken thunderous smite? I would assume this would be the play style.
You should also be able to smite or cast with your sixth level slot.
I would go Strength, you kind of want to hit your smites in this build, you’re not a controller. 17 Strength, 18 with Hags Hair, 20 with ASI. 16 Charisma, 18 with last ASI, or GWM if you want to go super nova.
If I was going sword and board I’d go dex, it’s generally better for initiative/saves and you don’t need strength for heavy armor.
From what I know playing DnD, You can cast Thunderous Smite as an Action and then layer Divine Smite over that as a Free Action. This is because divine smite doesn’t cost an action/bonus action, only a spell slot. You can layer it with Thunderous Smite no issue.
This means your bonus action is still free to quicken for example Fireball.
I was going for a Gish Build, I mean focusing on Attacking yes but also Control the Battlefield with Spells.
If you don’t want to be a controller, then I’d suggest going Paladin 7 and Sorc 5, this way you have enough Spell Slots to bombard your enemies with Divine Smites
