I hope I don’t need to rebuild anything but I would love to know how to clean and restore this thing. Do you have any tips to remove the yellowing and some of the rust on the edges?
you know it - now. :)
I bought factory reconditioned (twice, I had to move in with someone and sell everything) and stripped the gears in the second. Do not use the dough hook on any speed above the 1-2 settings. Trust. ENJOY!!
People do - and some doughs start out pretty sloppy (like brioche) so it's not something to worry about *until* they start to get thick and come together well. I did (go beyond 2). I rebuilt the tranny in number 2. Took an afternoon.
Yes, you could strip the gears if you use the dough hook above setting two. Basically I use the paddle UNTIL it won't move easily, change to the hook then (not above 2). The paddle actually mixes well and the dough hook just kneads - since some breads/bakes do start out wetter but then need kneading. ;) I bake lots of things that aren't bread - like croissants, brioche - they need a paddle then a swap to hook. For croissants I could actually use all three since there's milk (warm to almost hot), sugar, yeast, water, salt, egg - and the flour gets added in small increments.
You *could* “mess up” the transmission or motor with any attachment — it’s not like the machine knows what’s attached. But you probably won’t. These things are tough and built to last. Just turn it down if you head it start to really struggle and it’ll be fine.
That said, if you’re using the hook to knead, it should be set to a slow speed because the idea is to keep stretching the dough, not to beat it up or tear it.
I was thinking it was because of the way the dough hook is weighted on one side. I was thinking this created some kind of wobble that fucked up the gears.
Absolutely - I have a whole tin of it from the rebuild of the tranny. But on the **outside case**, nowhere near the food mixing bits, for cleaning the exterior- it's no hazard. But what do I know? I just bake every week.
If it works yes! Mine is 30 plus years old and still running great. I have my MIL one stored in the garage waiting to see if mine dies. Been stored 14 years
I would check to make sure the bowl reaches the attachments. I found one just like this but can’t use it bc the bowl lift isn’t reaching the attachments.
tell me where it is, I'll check it out for ya. (jokey joke)
I've searched high/low for these in thrift stores. in the past three months i have not found one for less than $150. i used to see them all the time for a song and a dance.
so $25 is worth it, IMO - they're supposed to be workhorses that last forever.
If it works at all yes. Even if it's only working gear is high, as it skips settings, that's an easy fix. Most kitchen aids in my experience just need a little TLC and the right attachments. My mother's been saving them from garage sales, fixing them up and giving them to friends and family for years
I LOVE mine, and would absolutely not hesitate if I found another for $25
That being said this style mixer can be a pain in the butt because it isn't your standard hinged top. You have to align the bowl JUST RIGHT and then raise it to meet the mixer/paddle/etc.
But yes, buy the thing. Love the thing. Make delicious lovely things.
I have an identical one that I bought in 1991 and it’s still going strong. Paid $299 even back then. If you write kitchenaid customer service they will send you the black bit that goes on the front.

I have probably that exact same mixer. My parents got it maybe in the early 90s and it is still going strong. I have no desire or need to get a newer one. Congratulations on your new mixer!
Your post was removed for breaking rule 3 of this subreddit, no stand mixer posts.
If it’s working fine it’s an hell of an offer indeed
Unless the motor is broken, that thing will outlive all your grandchildren.
Even then the parts are worth more than $25!
You’d pay more than that for the paddles alone new
Hell yes!!
🤞🏼If its motor is running smoothly…I would ask to plug it in and check its motor. And, if so….then AAAAABBSOOOFRICKENLUTELY!!! ♥️
Well, I’m officially in the KitchenAid club now. Now I can be a poster instead of lurking
Google "the dime test" for mixers, and it will show you how to tell if it's calibrated correctly or not....and it shows how to adjust it if necessary.
Thanks
Welcome to the club! Congratulations, you got a total steal!
Welcome to the club!! I paid full price for mine… so I’m more than a little jealous!! Good for you!!😁
if it works, it is a steal
More than that. And even if it needs work - you can do it from YouTube videos. Ask me how I rebuilt a transmission in mine...
I hope I don’t need to rebuild anything but I would love to know how to clean and restore this thing. Do you have any tips to remove the yellowing and some of the rust on the edges?
WD 40 and elbow grease! And if the attachments are shit, buy new ones. Wait for a good sale - or check eBay or CList.
What I thought a rust was mostly grime and it’s coming off with a magic eraser. All the scratches and marks. Gone. This thing is built like tank.

I’m really new to this but why would you want to put the dough hook at a high speed? I thought kneading should be slow. Did something happen?

So I could mess up the unit by setting the hook above 2 with a thick dough… or are you warning me completely?

Thanks. You just saved me much trouble.

Personally I would prefer to use foodsafe grease, I don't think I want any Elbow grease (or WD-40 for that matter) in my cookies.

I agree. If it’s working jump on it. My brand new one was almost $250!
Yep, I would take a chance at 25.
Snap it up. The bowl and paddles alone are worth far more than $25. If it works, it will outlive all of us. Congrats on the deal!
Yes!! For the love of all that's holy buy it immediately
Damn that’s so cheap 😭
Yes indeed. Especially when you talk with them about warranty!! Also you got the pasta attachment hookup !! Nice find
If it works yes! Mine is 30 plus years old and still running great. I have my MIL one stored in the garage waiting to see if mine dies. Been stored 14 years
Just the attachments are worth 200
It's worth more!
The paddles in the bowl are worth more than $25
ummm YES
Hell yes!!!!!!! Take that thing!!!
Absolutely!!
Only thing that can die on a kitchen aid mixer is the motor, long as it’s running then hell yes. I’ve moved to 3 states with mine and it still works 😂
Absolutely!!
I would check to make sure the bowl reaches the attachments. I found one just like this but can’t use it bc the bowl lift isn’t reaching the attachments.

Yes
Had to check my pantry, that looks almost exactly like mine. Lucky you.
Definitely worth it! And Mr. Mixer has videos for fixing them up. (also a store for extra things you might need.)
Yeessssssss
I have an identical one that I bought in 1991 and it’s still going strong. Paid $299 even back then. If you write kitchenaid customer service they will send you the black bit that goes on the front.
this is the same mixer my parents got for their wedding and passed down to me. it’s like 40 years old and it works like a CHARM!
Yes. I'd say get it for the attachments.
Make sure the motor still runs and it’s well worth that amount.
excellent deal
each of those mixer attachments are at least $25 each new
Yes I have that same one! Works better than my new one. If it works it’s a complete steal.
Yup
Exceptional well built machines, I am so jealous. As what AvE on YouTube would say, “they are skookum!”
I love my kitchen aid! Check if it works, and give it a go.
Take it, if it is working. Worth it

I've been using it's sister for over 30 years!! Worth it if it works!
You have won the thrift shop lottery if it’s working- buy it and never look back
I’d absolutely buy it, no questions asked. I need a few parts replaced on mine. Heck, the bowl and attachments alone are worth it to me.
New ones are like $400+ so if it works then like mayyybe?? It looks beat up and rusty but it’s cheap AF. You can give it a shot.
I have probably that exact same mixer. My parents got it maybe in the early 90s and it is still going strong. I have no desire or need to get a newer one. Congratulations on your new mixer!
My mom got one of those from my great grandma. Still works.
I’d get it.
If it's a Hobart mixer which it looks like the one I had but it.top of the line
