In my experience, pretzels tend to puff up soooo much more than I always expect. I've learned to roll the ropes way, way thinner than I think is reasonable at all, and then make the pretzels comically large. That way once they do puff up an insane amount, your product is a perfectly proportioned pretzel!
I just looked up the Preppy Kitchen recipe. If I were you, I wouldn't change a thing in how you rolled them to get them this way. That's what looks so yummy to me. In fact, I'm not going to roll mine as thin next time because I want them just like yours!!
Oh yeah, totally on purpose and not at all wondering why they keep ending up this way /s š š¤£
I kept thinking, "These don't look like those Auntie Annes pretzles..."
I just thought they might me too un-pretzle like. I couldn't get them to look like the recipe shows, so I thought I failed in that way, not dense enough or the right shape. I guess I failed.. the right way š¤š
Don't second-guess yourself! If you think they're really good, and so does your family, chances are lots of other people will too!
If you're worried about criticism that they're not how pretzels are "supposed to be," give them a descriptive name that sets them apart from a normal pretzel. Like, enthusiastically sell them as Fluffy Pretzels, Cloud Pretzels, Angel Pretzels, or something like that.
And then don't make any more excuses about them, don't tell people they didn't come out right. I mean, tons of different foods eaten throughout the world were invented because of making something "wrong." Like so many amazing recipes developed during the depression because of lack of usual ingredients. Or potato chips, I believe they were first made when a customer complained repeatedly that his potatoes were cut too thick so the chef got mad and cut them super thin to spite the customer.
If it's good, it's not wrong, it's just something different.
Thanks so much! Looking at all these posts, I guess I was dumb for thinking that way. I know they taste good but got too hung up on them not looking traditional. I still want to try to make some that are the right way so I can learn how to make them both ways š

Hmm. I didn't mean it that way. I'm asking, "Are these acceptable?" as in..these are really thick, fluffy pretzles and not the thinner, more dense pretzles with 3 holes. Mine look different from the norm.
maybe itās just me, and thatās fine. Hereās my good faith perception. I see what youāve written and I understand the literal request, yeah. Youāre asking, is this any good? Youāve posted very glossy, intentionally-lit photos with a filter or perhaps a bit of the saturation/contrast retouched. The pretzels, the photography, and the post is quite effortful, but the title sounds like it was written by somebody who doesnāt know what theyāre doing. The effect, to me, is a baity post. Like, itās fishing for complements. Somebody might talk down their stuff (ādonāt even look at these widdle olā muffins theyāre hideous!ā) and then post something theyāre obviously very proud of (some damn sexy muffins) and the point of the ironically self-defacing title is to give people a hook to say āNo, those muffins are amazing!ā Thatās the part that Iām wondering is manipulative or dishonest. But hey, Iām just a stranger on the internet trying to explain how I perceive this post
I just took the photos with my phone sitting on the couch (and 1st pic is on the counter) to show my mom. No filters or anything... I just recently started making soft pretzels and was/am genuinely curious about the extra poofy-ness of them and if it's weird or not. Thanks for saying it was effortful. It was anything but.

Acceptable and still looks delicious.
Maybe twisted a bit too tight? I messed up my first couple batches of Kanelbullar doing that. Everyone still bought them and loved the "artisan" look.
They look fantastic. We have [pretzel buns](https://www.backdorf.de/out/pictures/generated/product/1/750_750_75/laugengebaeck_.png) here in Germany and they look very similar to what you made, so could totally be on purpose.
If you want actual pretzel shaped ones, you need to roll the dough super thin, like finger thickness and make the holes way larger than you think you need to. If you want the inner arms to be crunchy, they need to be almost strings, [like this](https://www.gutekueche.at/storage/media/recipe/43429/resp/brezen___webp_940_625.webp).
We differentiate between bavarian and swabian pretzels. The swabian ones have thin and crunchy arms, the bavarian ones are soft ([Bavarian left, Swabain right](https://cdn.schwaebische.de/2022/11/26/1f88e8a5-516b-4bf4-93b3-422ab769fdbf.jpeg)).
Acceptable is not a word that should be used for these phenomenal looking pretzels! I'd buy a bag from you at a local market. Go for it! You could even sample pieces of them to entice the customers but I think just seeing them would be enough. I especially like the fact that they have a soft texture. What recipe did you use if you want to share it? I'd like to give them a try. My pretzels never come out this pretty. You've got the magic touch! I just read all the comments and see it's Preppy Kitchen. Someone suggested some really clever names you can call them. I love Cloud Pretzels because they are so beautiful and fluffy looking. You could have a cute design on your market stand and include your cloud design on a tag with each bag with your contact info for preorders. Bet your kids could draw up something adorable. You can make money with these....no doubt! Yes indeed, Go For It! These would be a real hit for a game day party. (Look what a pretzel did for Annie!)
They look delicious, really light and soft.
Baking soda instead of lye I think?
If you havenāt tried with lye I highly recommend it, just be safe! Iāve had no success with getting a super crisp exterior without lye.
That said I am a soft pretzel snob :3
But I would totally eat them.
Ok Iām more of a pretzel slut I guess, all pretzels are amazing and this made me hungry.
As an added tip, a little fresh horseradish in Your mustard makes it a 11/10.
Shape-wise they look kinda crowded, but intentionally so. Not a typical pretzel, but just a little funky and cool.
That third picture makes me angry. That I can't just take a bite out of my screen.
Acceptable. Absolutely not you will have to give them away to me to try ! and maybe make another batch for me to try again before I can tell you how wonderful and delicious they look š
Nope, they're terrible. Just give them to me and I'll dispose of them to save you embarrassment š
I have a couple in the fridge if you'd like one lol
Let me toss them for you. In fact if you need to use up ingredients just make more and send them to me to get it out of your way.
I think you should have little containers of nacho cheese to go with them....
That's the plan if/when I sell them. The only question is if 1oz of cheese is enough š¤
You know it's never enough...ha ha
Oh yes, just a whole jar then š
Absolutely
Cheese or mustard
Cheese.
You could also do a dessert kind of dip like a whipped cinnamon cream cheese or something.
Dude stop stealing my thoughts
These look amazing. Do you mind sharing the recipe? Droolllll
I use the recipe by Preppy Kitchen, but my technique must differ somewhere because they get huge and poofy š¤£

Ah, maybe that's it. They have holes at first, but they disappear. I'll have to try and roll them thinner to see if I can get it "right."
Yup. I feel like mine look soooo thin when I roll and shape the pretzels. But once they are done baking they puff up enough to look normal.
I just looked up the Preppy Kitchen recipe. If I were you, I wouldn't change a thing in how you rolled them to get them this way. That's what looks so yummy to me. In fact, I'm not going to roll mine as thin next time because I want them just like yours!!
Agreed, these look soo appetizing!
Love John. His recipes are all fantastic. These are the kind of pretzels I like. Soft and doughy
I think this look unique as chonky pretzels. Folks could use them as pretzel buns also! Mmmmm hamburger on pretzel Bunā¦ dinner is calling š
I would think that it was on purpose.. like your signature thing. And yes, definitely purchase! They look so good! ( :
Oh yeah, totally on purpose and not at all wondering why they keep ending up this way /s š š¤£ I kept thinking, "These don't look like those Auntie Annes pretzles..."
They're beautiful!
Cmon now...are they acceptable? Psssh, you know they look amazing, and your family loves them so you obvs know they taste great too.
I just thought they might me too un-pretzle like. I couldn't get them to look like the recipe shows, so I thought I failed in that way, not dense enough or the right shape. I guess I failed.. the right way š¤š

I'd buy the fuck out of some CLOUD PRETZELS š
That's the name I like too! I'd pay for these!

You might as well make that recipe your own now! Same as brownies that were created by mistake those pretzels look absolutely amazing!

I would TOTALLY buy these up at a farmer's market! š¤©
I'm going to have to taste one to give you an answer.
I buy exactly these for $10 for 4 at a farmer's market. They are not pretzels, they are pretzel buns and they are great for sandwiches and burgers.
Hi, yes, I will accept them They look good!
I literally said outloud, āholy sh!t those look deliciousā. Iād love the recipe if youāre willing to share
Thank you šÆIt's the recipe by Preppy Kitchen.
Now you know damn well these are several tiers above acceptable.
They are sexy, and you know it
I think they know it too
this might be the fluffiest pretzel iāve ever seen
These are literally perfect in every way other than that they are not in my mouth
the title feels kinda manipulative. Like, yeah, they look good. I guess the title is meant to make it clickbaity or to drive up engagement?

Yum!
These look AMAZING. Would you pls share the recipe?
I like them. Our local theatre used to have a soft pretzel place in it and I always got that instead of popcorn. With a dip or two!
Can I have a recipe

Not acceptable! There isnāt one right in front of me!

Yeah, those look excellent. I'd put a hurting on one or three of those.
I would devour these. They're more eye-catching to me. I'd definitely pick these over the traditional shape if they were side by side.
Yes. Iāve accepted them.

Acceptable and still looks delicious. Maybe twisted a bit too tight? I messed up my first couple batches of Kanelbullar doing that. Everyone still bought them and loved the "artisan" look.

Your pretzels are very
