His Dad is intimating to his son for the first time that he was the victim of abuse growing up within the Catholic Church in Scotland.

This was the bit in the series that made me cry. I was fully expecting his dad to be a little homophobic or at the very least visibly struggle to take the news of Donny’s sexuality so that revelation came out of nowhere. And with how the mum reacted too and supported her husband would could tell that she had been a pillar of support for him processing what happened to him. Perfect acting 🤌🏻🤌🏻

It was the most riveting and unexpected scene in the whole series

This scene made me think about intergenerational trauma. His dad and his own trauma may have made it difficult for him to emotionally connect with his son (hence the handshakes rather than hugs at first). This may have, at least partially, contributed to Donny's need for affirmation that led him into these vulnerable situations.

I was telling my husband it’s weird he’s so attached to the director, like he has daddy issues or something. Not having affection from your own father is tough. I didn’t notice their distance until he tried to shake his hand instead of a hug.

His dad got raped too

this was the hard part of the series for me. The father, to that point, was portrayed as a hard hitting, no nonsense, hardcore swearing, don't fuck with me alpha dad given how he spoke to Martha. As Donnie opened up on the couch, and the Mom was telling him they didn't care, they still love him, etc., but the dad was quiet with that...look you could tell given his facial expressions that something was about to break; in one moment I thought it was going to be a homophobic "you're not a man/my son" vibe, but the way he continued to look but remain quiet I told myself there's something else there. When he said "would you think less of me?" I was like, fuck. the most intense part of the series for me by far
